Invisible Adversaries
Bard College Of Art 2016 ISBN 9781936192502 Acqn 26294
Hb 22x29cm 300pp 160ills 120col 27
Invisible Adversaries is inspired by the eponymous 1976 feature film by the radical Austrian artist
Valie Export. The film presents a womans struggle to retain her sense of self against hostile alien
forces that appear increasingly ubiquitous, colonizing the minds of all those around her. Motifs
from the film--among them, architectures influence on identity; feminist critique; and the power of
political fantasy--operate as filters through which to consider significant pieces from the
Marieluise Hessel Collection. In addition to works by Valie Export, Invisible Adversaries draws
primarily from acquisitions of the Marieluise Hessel Collection over the past decade, with works
by over 50 artists including Chantal Akerman, Ida Applebroog, Lynda Benglis, Barbara Bloom,
Patty Chang, Anne Collier, Reneke Dijkstra, K8 Hardy, Roni Horn, Glenn Ligon, Leigh Ledare,
Helen Marten, William Pope.L, Hito Steyerl, Magali Reus, Rachel Rose, Thomas Ruff, Lorna
Simpson, Diane Simpson, Jo Spence and Gillian Wearing.

Mark Flood - Gratest Hits

Contemporary Art Museum Houston 2016 ISBN 9781933619590 Acqn 26304
Pb 22x28cm 208pp 120col ills 36
Mark Flood: Gratest Hits is the first survey of the work of Houston-based artist Mark Flood (born
1957) dating from the 1970s to 2016. Described by The New York Times as a painter and punk
propagandist, Flood has, despite remaining barely visible at the museum level, maintained an
active and influential career for decades in painting and, increasingly, exhibition practice,
producing work characterized by deep wisdom and trenchant humor. With Gratest Hits, Flood--an
artist so absolute in his judgments that one 2012 painting featured the words Whore Museums,
Gutless Collectors, Blind Dealers, So-Called Artists emblazoned on it--finally gets the
monographic museum treatment in his hometown, and a career-spanning catalogue to boot. This
fully illustrated, full-colour volume features texts by Carlo McCormick, Alison Gingeras, El Topito,
Scott Indrisek and Bill Arning, the exhibitions curator and director of the Contemporary Arts
Museum, Houston.

Wallace Berman - American Aleph

Michael Kohn Gallery 2016 ISBN 9781880086216 Acqn 26353
Hb 28x24cm 120pp 100ills 60col 53.50
Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the artists accidental death at age 50, this volume offers
the first substantial survey of the entire oeuvre of Wallace Berman (192676) from the late 1940s
until 1976.
Berman has been long heralded as one of the most significant and influential artists to emerge in
Southern California. Spiritually inclined yet steeped in popular culture and the political events of
the day, he conducted reconnaissance far beyond the borders of California, mining the American
psyche and broadcasting his ideas through mail art, publications, photographs and multilayered
art works.
Berman intersected with several intriguing cultural moments, starting with his first Los Angeles
solo show in 1957 at Ed Kienholz and Walter Hopps Ferus Gallery. He also participated in an
important 1966 group exhibition in London at the legendary Robert Fraser Gallery, whose other
artists included Richard Hamilton, Bruce Conner and Peter Blake--who put Bermans face among
the notable crowd in his cover for the Beatles Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
As interest in West Coast art has increased over the past 40 years, scholars have viewed
Berman as a quintessentially Californian artist whose entourage of likeminded friends was
essential to the formation of his creative vision. This volume takes a broader view, reassessing
Bermans significant contributions to the history of 20th-century American art.

Edgar Leciejewski - A Scene In A Library

The Green Box 2016 ISBN 9783941644892 Acqn 26672
Hb 20x29cm 76pp 84ills 60col 27
Edgar Leciejewski's new book A Scene in a Library is a journey through the artist's book
collection and his notebook. It is an eyesight test on how we look and use books. A journey and
vision on how time has built and changed our comprehension. It is also a cipher that links to a
self-portrait or a photographic manifesto. In former times cipher would also stand for zero. Zero,
nothing, zero of a function, a reference to the book itself as a functional object. A Scene in a
Library is a repository of time that allows slowing down of the bare act of seeing and reading.

Suzanne Treister - The HFT Gardener

Annely Juda Fine Art 2016 ISBN 9781904621737 Acqn 26696
Pb 22x25cm 42pp 183col ills 15
Primarily a painter through the 1980s, Treister has - since the 1990s - been a pioneer in the field
of new media art, developing fictional worlds and international collaborative organisations.
Utilising various media, including video, the Internet, interactive technologies, photography,
drawing and watercolour, Treister has evolved a large body of work which engages with eccentric
narratives and unconventional bodies of research. Often spanning several years, her projects
comprise fantastic reinterpretations of given taxonomies and histories that examine the existence
of covert, unseen forces at work in the world, whether corporate, military or paranormal.

Lucia Nogueira
Annely Juda Fine Art 2016 ISBN 9781904621744 Acqn 26697
Pb 22x25cm 64pp 42col ills 22.50
Nogueiras body of work comprises installation, sculpture, video and drawing. The material and
psychological relationships in the interplay of objects, space and language is at the core of her
artistic practice. Many of her works incorporate detritus found discarded on the streets of
London, or acquired in army surplus, medical and second-hand shops. Nogueira had an
extraordinary eye for the potential of the apparently least promising discovery and her ability to
place objects in significant conversation with spaces was uncanny. A fascination with the
structure of language infiltrated her titles but also expressed the particular force of her bilingual
ambivalence.

Magritte - La Trahison Des Images

Centre Georges Pompidou 2016 ISBN 9782844267313 Acqn 26248
Hb 24x28cm 224pp col ills 37.50
Text in French
Ren Magritte is a unique figure within the Surrealist movement, who never ceased to question
the supposed superiority of the word on the image. His work was filled with allusions to the myths
founders of Western culture (Plato, Pliny the Elder, the Old Testament, Cicero...), in which
Magritte anchored his thinking. The artist sought to raise painting to the level of poetry, music and
philosophy.
A catalogue with an original and pedagogical approach : the book revolves around 5 founder
myths, each one associated to a classical painting. Essays by contemporary philosophers and art
historians analyse the influence of these myths on Magrittes creative process and on his
reflections on the status of art. A corpus of letters complete the book, illustrating the
correspondence between Magritte and the great philosophers of his time.

Linda Rampell - The Shopmodern Condition

Art And Theory Publishing 2016 ISBN 9789163900075 Acqn 26272
Hb 15x23cm 256pp 39.95
In her previous work, Swedish design theorist and critic Linda Rampell has concluded that the
only -ism after postmodernism is consumerism. The postmodern condition has become a
shopmodern condition in which aesthetics and economics have merged into aesthetonomics,
which defines an economy of evaluating how much a being is worth. This book explores how
design consumption is no longer a simple question of making purchases and consuming goods.
Instead, it means to become consumed by images, wherein even identities are consumed.
Designdarwinism in this kind of image-culture is a life-and-death struggle for self-improvement.

The Kingdoms Of Elgaland- Vargaland

Art And Theory Publishing 2016 ISBN 9789188031280 Acqn 26654
Pb 22x25cm 294pp 250ills 200col 45
Proclaimed in 1992 by Swedish artists Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Leif Elggren, the
Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland (KREV) consist of all border territories: geographical, mental,
and digital. Although there is nothing new in questioning the supposed neutrality and scientific
rigour of geographical lines, which legitimise frontiers as containers of those ideologies linked to
the territoriality of the nation-state, various recent developments have pointed to the urgency of
finding new ways to locate or map an increasing number of intermediate spaces arising from the
hybridisation, superimposition, and crossing of peoples flowing between more stable territories.
With contributions by Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Magali Arriola, Adrian Notz, and Hkan Nilsson.

Hb 21x28cm 258pp 100ills 50col 63
There isnt any single reality, or a unique way of looking at things. Seeing things from different
angles is a very fruitful way to come to terms with our living in this world. The youngsters from
Atelier dellErrore, a laboratory of visual arts created at the initiative of visual artist Luca Santiago
Mora as a complementary service to the Child Neuropsychiatric clinics of Reggio Emilia and
Bergamo, know this very well. Their creative imagination is focused on the representation of
animals depicted as ancestral figures, living organisms foreign to any traditional order of scientific
classification. The Atelier animals certainly embody the fears and defeats of those drawing them,
but more so their need for protection and their powerful drive towards self-assertion.
