Becky Hammond San Antonio Spurs

A) Post Spacing
a. When the post player catches, best shooters on the strong side can
slide and relocate, everybody else speed cuts baseline to the
opposite side
b. Other post player on the catch is butt to the baseline inside of the
short corner in the Dunker spot to catch and finish
c. Whichever way the post player with the ball turns the other post
player either goes under the basket or to the middle to the opposite
of the big with the ball
d. Backside wing is the key slasher who can backcut anytime his
mans head turns away from him
e. Sprint to space
i. Drill- With Guard spacing they will play a 1-2 dribble game and
3 on 0 penetrate kick and space. They get into the lane set
their feet and then they space outside the 3
1. Best thing Manu does is catch the pass in stride and
punch the gap with the dribble (ie Desi Rodriguez)
B) Scouting
a. *Something that gives them a lot of trouble as a team that promotes
ball movement is when teams get out and deny passes and they
continually have to cut thru and fill
b. *They used some lineup driven analytics in their series with the
Clippers trying to see the most effective lineups
c. *They do not overload them with sets in scouting, they only go over
3-5 sets pregame in the regular season
-Its about our defense more so than about their offense
We want to take more uncontested shots than the other team
Its not about how much you know as a coach its about how much
your players can learn. Less is more
*They give them 3 points offensively and 3 defensively for opponent scouts
C) Drills
-Drill: .5 Game- You have .5 to pass, shoot, pass or drive for a perimeter
player
- They move the ball right away

D) Philosophy
-They send 3 back minimum in Transition D
- They do lots of 5 on 0 and they call it scripting
*On a big on little switch they do not want to try and pound it in to the post
they like getting the guard on a running start on the perimeter at the big
guarding him or get it moving and let the ball find its way to the mismatch
*They are no longer as adamant about no middle they now want to have
feet square with the three point line and make the dribbler banana instead
of straight line drive
*They are very concerned with getting a lot of rest, they dont run guys into
the ground
*They try to treat guys like professionals, let them get in on their own in
the gym not seeking them out all the time to workout but having the
players come to them
*Nobody is above Pops wrath he gets into the best players the same way
he does with the undrafted rookies
-Pops biggest strength is his ability to have relationships with guys outside
of basketball
Earl Watson Phoenix Suns Love, Nurture, Teach
This game is full of coaches but few teachers
If you cannot connect you cannot teach
A) Teaching Points
a. *Engage and Embrace in guarding pin downs
i. Defender initiate contact below the waist with your
forearm then shoulder and hand through and bump him off
his route coming off
b. *In pick and rolls they use a 2 dribble rule where you have to take
2 dribbles to survey then make the right read
B) Creb Cycle
-Do not let discouragement impact our enthusiasm

a. Character
b. Development As people, building good men
c. Synergy one purpose, one movement - Tearing down walls everyone
in the program on the same page
a. He will hold full staff meetings to get everyone on the same page
(trainers, front office, weight training)
i. Because everyone has a vision for how things should
happen the key is getting everyone on board with the same
vision
d. Surrender- To the now
e. Belief Have to believe in yourself 1st
f. Playoffs The mission and ultimate goal at this point
C) Notes
We want men of character because those guys will make the right play
when the time comes
Gary Payton Story- Stopped the game because Watson didnt call a TO
during a pickup game about being aware that his team was tired and needed to
regroup
You have winners and you have champions, only a champion can teach
you to be one.
*Coach Wooden would never talk about basketball with Watson he would
always be asking about what was going on in his life.

*Be socially aware of your players

*The greatest basketball teams are programs
- Programs have plans
- Their decision making was fluid
*Terry Stotts would always do something different on the board (ie Inspirational
quotes, movies different stuff to mentally challenge and engage his players before
every practice and game.
Belief is stronger than reality John Wooden
-If you get them to believe they can do something they will make it
happen
-When they know you care they will make anything work for you
(regardless of scheme or game plan they will make it work)
-Championship teams Hi 5 the most
*Transparency develops trust and love with your players
*Be romantic with how you teach
- Do not fall in love with winning because then you will cheat to win
- Fall in love with playing the right way
*They are trying to build momentum in their program and in games
*Character over talent
*Have the right people on the bus
**Put the right people in their right seats (Putting the best people for the
job in the correct role)
If Money is your motivation then you only get paid if you win
Kevin Eastman Los Angeles Clippers
-Keep the main thing the main thing
-Stick with the Why
A) Winners Compass
-(N or North) Next Able to get on to the next play, next pass etc
-(S or South) Serious Taking every possession serious and not taking any
plays off. This and every defensive possession is a serious one
- (E or East) Every Every second of everything is important
-There are two bests, the best and your best
-You have to be a seek and find person if you want to be great
*Seek and find answers and then you have to think and apply, it is the
separator

B) 3 Things for your Future

1. Your Character
-Dont be up and down, be consistent every day
2. Personal Approach
- Personal investment v. Entitlement Teams of entitlement never
win titles
3. Your True Relationships People who you can trust in any situation, not
just someone you networked with
*Nothing of greatness has ever been achieved in a vacuum
**Develop a relationship with someone for a year before you ever ask them for
anything
**Always puts at the end of his emails that if he can ever help to let him know
-Story about George Raveling taking him up on that offer to have him fly
our to work out LeBron and Carmelo
C) Musts of Coaching
-Put out Fires Rather than yelling and screaming come over and help
guide the player through it off to the side
-Put Gas in the tank try to always motivate and inspire others
-In the Boston practice facility when they got the Big 3 Doc had a space created
for a banner on the wall in the practice facility with a light shining on it. The light
shone night and day and it was a reminder of what they were working towards.
They did most of their drills on one side of the floor which faced the blank space.
One day KG was pissed off and couldnt get part of a drill right when he was tired
and coming off a back to back. He was getting ready to quit the drill and get a sub
when he looked up saw the space, slapped the floor and redoubled his efforts.
D) Docisms
1. He who angers you, owns you An emotional hijacking
2. Winning teams are clutter free
-Dont bring your stuff on the floor
3. You may have a stubborn team you have to let me in
4. Champions get punched in the mouth too, get knocked down too
-How concerned are you with the invisible stats? (ie hockey assists, screens
leading to scores etc)
-They endorse and love full body screeners They have must screen
situations with both your best screener and your best scorer together
-You are not training to be the best in the world, you are training to be the best
in the world on your worst day. Ronda Rouseys mom

-To be the best you have to beat the best on their best day
-To be the best you have to learn from the best
Each new season has to be about your current players
Confidence is contagious
Great captains can tell their best friend the truth
Never compromise your culture we all have a culture
o If there is a breach in our culture you have to take care of it right
away
o You become us, we dont become you

A message is only a message if it is received and acted upon

Truth Live it, tell it, take it
The Truth can only work if a relationship precedes it
Drills you do in practice should show up in the game
o The more your drills are game speed the more they show up on
game film
o Cant get bored with the process
o Progress is the process
3 Sets to be good
o Skill Set, Mind Set Reset
Should have a What if Coach on your staff
o What if they go zone, what if they switch the screen to be ready for
all possibilities
There are honest mistakes and ignorant mistakes
Fatigue Demands Fundamentals
Assistant Coaches should be 90% evaluation, 10% emotion
Great leaders see the invisible and hears the inaudible
o Read Body language and have a sense of your players and how they
are feeling and where they are at
Is your belief system greater than the criticism?
Be an all star in your role
o You may not like your role but its what we need to win a
championship
Good teams know their plays but great teams execute their plays
Monitor daily: Motivation, Concentration, Confidence
All of us have a platform at some time, we are responsible to do
something with that platform. Joel Osteen

Take action on the things that whisper to you - Oprah

Big Eyes, Big Ears and a small mouth
Young coaches
o Show Up
o Shut Up
o Keep Up
o Its not about money

Facts
-Best shots in basketball, Layups, Free Throws and 3s
-If your effective FG% is not greater than 50% then youre a drag
-This can lead to tough conversations with players about their own
efficiency
-Want to set up the floor in order to get the most efficient shots
*Does not want post ups unless they are at the end of the shot clock
because the shot off the post up is not as high percentage a look as he can get
-Fist 3 steps in transition are the biggest keys to successful transition break and
catching the defense at a disadvantage
*For every 1 second you hesitate you lose 10ft
*Nearest guy takes the ball out of bounds
*They put Xs on the floor in the corners to emphasize getting the the exact
spots on the floor they want their players
-He does not want a rim runner he wants 1st big running wide to the wing or the
corner even if it is a 5 who can only shoot to 15 feet
-PG gets it out going north and south opposite of the two man side
-The guy on the wing is a stepper he is a step or two back ready to step into a 3
so he is back a few feet off the 3 giving even more space to the PG
-He doesnt like the PG crossing the grain wants him getting up the floor as fast
as possible
-Trail big needs to take a low angle in the transition BS to get a piece of the guard.
Trying to get the back half of the defender with the screen
-Guard has to get the defenders weight on his back opposite foot of where the
pick is coming

-Doesnt like an interchange on the backside wants shoots ready with their
hands and feet shot ready
*If the 4 cant shoot he can go right into a DHO with the 3

-Best areas for pick and roll which are both above 1ppp
1. Just above the short corner Best
2. Running start angled screen (our Horns BS)
-Side PNRs are both still just slightly above 1ppp in the NBA

*Track what our Pick n Roll points per possession v Post Ups, Off Screens etc
*If you play with energy the ball will find you
*In the Ball Screen teach the big to leave early if your guard with the ball leaves
early. If the guard starts to go before you get there then slip out of it instead of
getting a moving screen
*In transition if the ball side wing in the corner sees the back of his defenders
head its an automatic backdoor.
*The PG can help facilitate this by putting on a burst of speed and getting
to just inside the 3 pt line on the wing and making the corner mans defender
think he is turning the corner and getting to the rim
*What this also does is when the wing backcuts if the PG does not throw
it he is now in the area where the 5 can follow into a ball screen at the most
efficient ball screen area according to their analytics
*If the PG comes for a DHO with the ball side wing man in transition, they do not
want the wing to set his man up. They feel that it just puts his defender on
guard. They just want that wing to run right into the DHO.
*Bigs have to run with vision if they can get a quick screen on the 4 and he can
cut to the rim and mash his man all the way under the rim for a quick easy layup.
(Quick Open screen with the 4 and the 5 in transition)
*This open screen can also get the 4 man a quick jumper if he can shoot it
*It is really good when even you dont know what is coming next
*Teaching them how to play basketball rather than run plays
*In reality we dont turn down good shots because there may not be a better
one
*Thoughts are like bricks if you put too many in the trunk of your mind its
eventually going to slow you down.
*Get your butt back on defense
-They like to get back defensively Through the elbows in case a ball
bounces their way for an offensive rebound
*If you cut out some of their transition out and you get some transition you
have a good shot at winning
-Transition BS Drill:
Transition spots with all of them wide, PG throws the backdoor, a coach
hits the PG then the 5 man gets a trail low BS and you shoot either a jumper or
get a flip up off that (3 man drill, no weakside)

**When they do 5 on 0 after the shot goes up sometimes they will have a coach
throw a ball in to any guy on the floor and they will have to space and play from
where they are at right then Teaches guys how to play out of any situation and
use their imaginations
-As the PG dont just accept the defense icing you, you can go into a DHO with the
trailer and use it like a BS
*Versus switching it is important that the big screening hits the bottom side of
the man he is screening
*Prefers his roll man not open up to roll but rather to sprint out of it
*Versus a hard hedge or trap they like to retreat dribble to draw both defenders
out then throw over the shorter guard defender to the big short rolling
**Show our guys different looks defensively to have them progress through
different reads
*Likes using guard post ups then a guard coming for a DHO to combat switching
with the guy who posted making the reads v the switch with his back to the
basket
Rick Carlisle: NBA Coaching Today

Teaches some unconventional shooting techniques

Middle finger on seam (length wise)

Step-in every time rhythm, inertia power

Feet staggered

Squaring up to basket = recipe for disaster

If you can get ball balanced with just one hand, youre in good shape

wandering thumb leads to problems

o
Missing FTs? Look for wandering thumb or wandering elbow

Middle finger and thumb= foundation

Be behind the ball as much as possible (not under it)

To create power use the lean

o
if I was going to hit you i would want momentum before I threw the
punch

Lean and the step + firm wrist = power levers

touch the chin = way to keep the ball up

Load the ball high--- by loading it high, youre eliminating movement

Always want to catch on a left-right; if its tight on curl, you may have to
go inside foot otherwise always want to catch on left-right

First sign you see on right when you walk into MAVS practice facility: LOVE
PRESSURE
o
Develop process that holds up under pressure

Footwork: backing up then stepping in

Mitigate the travel by suspending the dribble

NBA Finals: Saliva will taste a bit different; sleep will change
o
Means you care
o
In this state, we have the ability to accomplish beyond what we thought we
could

Always try to be the more persistent team on defense

Pick up full-court to get into the rhythm of the game/nobody else in the
NBA does it

Vancouver NHL series--- wasnt about who had more shots on goal Was
about who had the most hits
When you leave it out there and go as hard as you can possibly go, the result will
take care of itself
Larry Schaat Man Defense
-The guys you coach are as smart or smarter than you so speak from the heart
and be real. Guys can sense when you are not being real
-Income tax joke about having to be with an ugly woman your whole live then
Brendan shows up with Beyonce and she was saying something about income tax
-Horse race story that Billicheck told Florida asking what horse wins the race
The horse that runs the fastest down the stretch, you havent done shit yet
nobody talks about who led of the race. Finish in the NCAA tourney.
*They do 5-15 minutes in the off season 1 hour of just defense drills individually
and as a team
*People only ever talk about playing the game the right way in terms of offense
interesting
*Try and worry about defense
*On your weakest shooting nights you have to have a chance to win
** The least amount of skill and the most amount of try is in the first 6 seconds
of the defensive possession and the last 6 seconds of a defensive possession.
-The worst thing you can do in the last 6 seconds is ignore a block out
-Sprint back on defense inside the line of the ball
*We dont talk on defense it is too loud and hectic for that, we holler on defense

*We holler: early, loud and twice in everything we do defensively

*Why are your players communicating on defense? For the coaches or because
they love their teammates?
-What does a loser look like, act like and sound like? (He keeps this on the board
in the locker room)
*They spend two hours at the start of the season on talking about where we do
not want shots taken from
-They want to turn their defender 3 times before half court
*Three Keys to a Great Defense: Hands, Feet and Mouth say it twice and say it
loud
-Use your hands (They keep their fingers up all the time)
-Bother the ball
*On ball defenders square up to where the ball is at on the arc then moves to
take away have of their body one way or the other to take away half the court
-Stance, footwork, hands
*They use ropes with the offensive player with the ball having 4 ropes in his
hands connected to the other offensive players and the defenders find their
ropes and they get their inside fingers on the rope to take away the line of the
ball to their man
-On weakside defense the defenders sprint to straddle the mid line then
find their rope and get their inside hand fingers on the rope (This forces you to
get your ball side foot up
-Guarding screens for them is all based on where the ball is at. If the ball is close
on a pin down then it is an automatic chase, if it is across court then the defender
has the option to chase or shortcut
*Were going to win if they take affected 2s
-Not contested but rather affected (getting the offensive player to be off
balance, off rythmn etc)
*They start video, practice and walk thrus with defensive emphasis so
subliminally they know it sets the tone with defense
*They always start with Transition Defense
Drills
-Three guys on offense (top ft line, short corner, short corner) one man on
defense with his head under the rim. Coach can throw it to any offensive player
and the defender has to get outside the lane or restricted arc and take a charge.
Every player takes one and everyone on the team sprints to pick him up

-Offensive players on the wings one defender under the rim. Coach TOK
with a ball swings it to one wing, the defender has to properly close out. Reversal
to the other wing the defender gets to the other side of the lane to help as that
wing drives it. Then the offensive player that the defender was guarding on the
wing cuts to the rim and the offensive player he stopped outside the key passes it
to that man. The defender then has to get there and wall up affecting that shot.
*Use a short shot clock in drills to emphasize the first and last 6 seconds
*Try, Edge, Worry So the guys believe they can win regardless of shooting that
night
Joe Abunasser Player Development
*If we spent half as much time as coaches on player development as we spent
on scouting we would have much better players
*Getting our players to wake up and want to get better is key
*Player development is an all the time thing, not just in the summer time
*Personal attention and personal relationships are a key to being able to reach
and help them
1. Skill Development On the floor
2. Performance training Lifting weights
3. Nutrition How important is this to your culture?
a. Normal recovery after a hard workout is 72 hours later with better
nutrition you can cut it to 24 hours
b. Even being just 3% dehydrated can decrease your performance by
30-50%
4. Physical Therapy- Stretching, foam rolling, bands, massages etc
5. Mental Side of Training they should be organized and pop through during
training.
a. The environment shouldnt be one with people around messing
around or people just hanging out wanting to talk it should be to get
in and get better
-When youre coming off screens your hamstrings, core and glutes have to be
strong in order to be low and stay low.
