A Case Study of
BATANGAS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE: The Morning After
FACTS
Engineer Felicidad Lazaro, a mechanical engineering graduate of Adamson University, is
operating her auto parts supply business while teaching at the Batangas Polytechnic College.
After years of teaching, she earned the chairmanship of the Mechanical Engineering Department.
Time came the dean decided to leave for a job abroad making her the new dean of the College of
Engineering.
Engineer Lazaros first concern was to fill up the slots left by five faculty members who
resigned. However, only ten applicants came up, almost all fresh graduates with no any job
experience. Another concern is the rapid increase of the students in the college. To make the
matter worse, two of the senior members of the college resigned for a job offer from other
company. Engineer Lazaro is now contemplating how she will survive the crisis.
ISSUE/PROBLEM
3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Engineer Lazaro being the dean of the College of Engineering is now facing a very
serious problem as the number of engineering faculty becomes insufficient with the growing
number of students. Also keeping the faculty members satisfied with their job is another concern.
SHORT DISCUSSION LEADING THE PROBLEM.
OBJECTIVES
1. What qualifications would be the basis of hiring the additional faculty members
considering that all applicants have no teaching experience?
2. How can the existing faculty members be motivated in doing their teaching
profession?
SUGGESTED SOLUTION ATLEAST 3 SUGGESTED SOLUTION.
1. Considering that all applicants have no teaching experience, their school performance
can be one of the bases in hiring additional faculties. Their willingness and
motivation to teach should also be taken into account.
2. Motivating the existing faculty members to stick in the teaching profession is a hard
task in the case of Engineer Lazaro. One way of doing this is by having a good
relationship between the faculty members. Also, providing trainings and seminars for
career enhancement not only in teaching but also in their field can be a good way of
motivating them.

CONCLUSION
Managing an organization is a very hard task especially the case of engineering school
faculty members. Being in demand here and abroad, engineering instructors tend to leave the
teaching profession in place of field work with higher compensation or benefits. With this, a
good manager should be able to motivate the members of the organization into being devoted to
their work. Through this higher retention of faculty members can be obtained and shortage in
their number can be minimized.
