Bamboo as a Material
According to Darrel DeBoer in his book Bamboo Building Essentials,

bamboo is a stronger compression than concrete and tensile strength equal

to steel and more sustainable due to its fast production. Its enormous
potential due to availability, simple to use, durability and low impact building
construction material. Furthermore, a sustainable, effective in reducing
carbon and greenhouse emission.
The great advantage of bamboo to timber is its lightweight,
versatility and allow passive cooling effect rather than concrete with a
greater mass. Different tests have been evaluate and conducted the
enforcement of bamboo in compressive and tensile strength compared to
other traditional wood materials. Its size and shape that create a versatile
design of floor, walls and roof structure that provide natural ventilation and
its inherently resistant to wind and earthquakes.

Vernacular and Contemporary use of bamboo

Bobby Manosa
Properties of bamboo
Two types of Connections
Lashing Connection- or Friction tight rope (strapping) it is held by straps
commonly with the use of rind strips of bamboo, rattan or lianas. When
drying, the connection of bamboo poles stretch or tighten. Nowadays, plastic
cord and steel wire used to tied joints but unfornately lashed connection are
not properly done and could cause a change of joint position of bamboo.
Clove Hitch- used for joining together with the by tying
two or more poles.
Square lashing- no tendency for the poles to separate
that begin and end in a clove hitch

Diagonal Lashing- used

for poles to string apart shall
begin and end in a clove hitch
Shear Lashing- two or more poles shall be wrapped to tighten and it should
begin and end with a clove
Bolting Connection- it is used where poles at connection joint filled with
mortar.

Compressive Properties

Tensile Strength- https://www.ukessays.com/essays/environmentalsciences/vernacular-and-contemporary-use-of-bambooenvironmental-sciences-essay.php

Bamboo has a tensile strength equal to that of steel owing to the strong
fibres within its shoot. This strength is greater parallel to the shoots as
compared to the strength perpendicular to the grain direction. This is an
important consideration while designing connections for load transfer.
Compressive properties:
The compressive strength of bamboo is due to the hollow cylindrical shape of
the culm, where the strongest fibres are along the outer edge and stiff nodes
at equal intervals along the length which act as diaphragms. The bamboo
shoot would possess a relatively high compressive strength axially if it were
to grow in a perfectly straight manner.
Bending strength:
The fibres that run along the length of the bamboo make it most vulnerable
to excessive bending, which causes the bamboo shoot to lose its circular
form and hence its strength. There are numerous parameters like age,
position of the culm, moisture content, skin surface and distribution node
which greatly affect the bending strength of the bamboo shoot.
Shear strength:
One of the most important drawbacks of bamboo in terms of its material
properties is its low shear strength. The walls of the shoot are relatively thin,
and contribute significantly to the cracking and splitting of the culm.
Buckling failures:
Owing to its slender nature, the bucking strength of bamboo is an important
factor that needs to be taken into consideration while designing.

Bamboo Treatment

Easily prone to insect and fungi but has a very few natural
toxic. The bamboo treatment will remove the starch and carbo
(soluble sugars), the one that attract fungi and insects by replacing
a new kind of chemical that will put inside the cell of bamboo that
will increased the life span of bamboo. Most commonly life
expectancy without ruined any structural properties of about 50
years.
Other treatment by using limewash and smoking of bamboo
can help to have longer effect and the use of boron salts as an
effective treatment against insects and fungi.
