Brief Notes on The Surya Namaskara

SALUTATIONS TO THE SUN

Surya Namaskar (S.N.) is a complete, sadhana spiritual practice in
itself for it includes asana, pranayama, mantra and meditation
techniques.
This dynamic group of asanas is not a traditional part of hath yoga
practices as it was added to the original asana group at a later time.
However it is an effective way of loosening up, stretching, massaging
and toning all the joints, muscles and internal organs of the body. Its
versatility and application make it one of the most useful methods of
inducing a healthy vigorous and active life, while at the same time
preparing for spiritual awakening and the resulting expansion of
awareness.
Energy flows and disease.
In yoga ill health is understood to be a result of an imbalance in the
energy systems of the body. Therefore to have health energies must be
balanced.
Our world is one of dualities; day/night, light/dark,
introversion/extroversion, knowledge/action and so on. These
polarities are also represented in the body as Ida and Pingala i.e the
two main energy flows of the body. The solar as represented by Pingala
Nadi and the moon represented by the Ida Nadi. Pingala Nadi conducts
prana shakti (vital energy or the vital life giving force) and Ida Nadi
conducts manas shakti (mental energy of the energy of
consciousness).
Here are some characteristics associated with both:

The number of possible attributes for Ida and Pingala are endless for
we see these dual properties in all of nature. In the human body both
the macrocosm and the microcosm are based on these two polarities
for example, arteries/veins,
These also find congruence with our parasympathetic and sympathetic
nerves, sodium/potassium in the conduction of nerve impulses and so
on.
Regular practice of Surya Namaskar regulates this Pingala Nadi
whether it is under or over active. Regulation of Pingala Nadi leads to a
balanced energy systems at both mental and physical levels- leading
to health!
Practice of Surya Namaskar as a whole gives a great number of
benefits.
It strengthens the back and helps balance the metabolism.
It stimulates and balances all the systems of the body including the
reproductive, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems.
It works as a pranic generator, ensuring ongoing release of pranic
energy and the balancing of Pingala Nadi.
It works directly on Manipura Chakra (location - solar plexus). This
chakra is governed by the sympathetic nervous system or Pingala Nadi
and is responsible for the digestion and assimilation of nutrients. This
area becomes therefore very important for our physical health. S.N.
flexes and extends the body , stretching and compressing this centre of
gravity and giving it maximum stimulation. Apart from being good for
digestion, the whole body is charged with vitality when Manipura
chakra is healthy.
-----------------------------------It is important to get down to a daily routine and thereby discover the
effectiveness of this ancient technique through individual effort. You
may have read that the practice of Surya Namaskar revitalizes the
mind and helps to eradicate disease but you must practice the
technique in order to find out the truth for yourself.
