Introduction
A soil sample is the representative of the entire lot from which it is
taken. It completely represents all the characteristics of the lot from which
it is recovered. Some of the types of samples which are generally retrieved
in soil sampling are disturbed and undisturbed soil.
When the natural conditions of a sample such as its structure, texture,
density, natural water contents or the stress conditions are disturbed then
the sample is called as disturbed soil sample. By using shovel
from auger cutting these samples can be recovered. On the contrary,
without disturbing the natural conditions of a soil sample such as
its structure, texture, density, natural water contents or the stress condition
the sample obtained is called undisturbed soil sample. This type of
soil sample cannot be recovered and it retains the original properties of the
soil mass as much as possible.
The objective of this laboratory is to obtain a sample of of that two
types of soil and also to know its importance as preliminary basis for soil
testing.

Equipment
1. Container
2. Hand Auger
3. Shovel
4. Throwel
5. Meter Stick
6. Pale
7. Candle
8. Match

Procedure
For Disturbed Soil
1. Clear the area where the sample is desired to be excavated.
2. Using the hand auger, extract the soil sample of at least 18 inches
depth. Use meter stick to measure the depth.
3. Place at least 500 grams of soil sample in a pale or container.
4. Place the removed earth into the hole and clean up the area.
5. Label the container with your group number and section
For Undisturbed Soil
1. Clear the area where the sample is desired to be excavated.
2. Use a shovel and throwel in digging the soil.
3. Leave a small rectangular portion of soil at the center of excavated
area.
4. Remove that portion of the soil on the excavated area.
5. Cover all the faces of the undisturbed soil sample by the use of the
melted candle.
6. Place the removed earth into the hole and clean up the area.
7. Place the covered sample in a container so that no air will pass trough
the sample.
8. Label the container with your group number and section;.

DISCUSSION:
The hand auger is rotated into the ground until they are filled, and
then lifted out of the hole to placed the extracted disturb soil on the pale.
It is done three times to reach the depth of 18 inches and 500 grams of
the soil sample.
For the undisturbed soil, the soil is digged by using the shovel and
throwel leaving a rectangular portion at the center of the excavated
area.It is then removed and covered by the melted candle to maintain its
shape and prevent entering of moisture from the outside . And the
undisturbed soil sample is placed on a container where no air will pass
through.
