Position Title: Environment Intern


Wage Rate: $16.00 per hour
Department/Division: Environment & Sustainable Initiatives
Group: Corporate and Strategic Initiatives
Reports to: Manager, Environment Projects
Location: British Whig Building (310 King Street)

Job Summary
The Environment Intern will assist E&SI staff with environmental projects including field-work, office
tasks, reporting, incident response and data management. The Intern reports to the Manager of
Environmental Projects.
Learning Objectives and Common Activities
Creation and implementation of a summer student work plan;

Completion of the summer storm water surveillance program including identification and implementing
priority solutions;
Working with environmental summer students, complete maintenance of phyto-remediating tree
plantation at Belle Park;
Work with the Citys IS&T and GIS department, develop and input environmental records into data
tables suitable for corporate database and GIS layers;
Attend spill calls and routine sampling programs with departmental staff.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
Students must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Geological Engineering, Civil
Engineering or Environmental Sciences.
A current unofficial transcript will be required;
Knowledge and experience in GIS systems is required;
Previous environmental experience is preferred;
Must possess and maintain a valid class G drivers license;
Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable
Sector) at your own expense.
Skills, Abilities & Work Demands
Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with other City departments
and the public;
Capability of working independently with little supervision;
Ability to frequently work outdoors in a variety of weather along waterfront areas of the City and
terrain conditions;
Proficient user of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access and GIS systems;
Proficiency with AutoCAD considered an asset;
Ability to perform the duties of the job while meeting the physical demands of this position including
but not limited to: carrying equipment, walking through wooded and swampy areas as required.
