2 Set up the ScanStation C10

The instrument should always be set up on its tripod. Using the tripod specified for the scanning
system guarantees a maximum of stability during scanning operations.

General Information
Always set up the instrument on its tripod. Do not set up the instrument directly on the ground
for scanning operations.
It is always recommended to shield the instrument from direct sunlight and avoid uneven
temperatures around the instrument.

2.1 Packing / Unpacking the System

When in its transport container, the ScanStation C10 can sit in face-up or face-down position.

Figure 5

To take the instrument out of its container, grasp the handle and the base of the instrument,
and lift (See Figure 5).
Use caution due to the weight of the instrument (13 kg).
Pack the instrument the same way it is delivered.

2.2 Scanner Setup on Tripod

Figure 6

1. Extend the tripod legs to allow for a comfortable working posture. Tighten the screws at the
bottom of the legs.
2. Place the tribrach on the tripod and secure it with the central fixing screw.
3. Set up the tripod so that the tripod plate is as horizontal as possible.
4. Push the tripod legs firmly into the ground.
5. Place the instrument on the tribrach and secure it with the tribrachs locking knob.
6. Level up the instrument using the instruments circular level. Turn two of the foot screws
together in opposite directions. The index finger of your right hand indicates the direction in
which the bubble should move. Now use the third foot screw to centre the bubble.

The instrument must be levelled before it is switched ON. If not levelled using the
tribrachs or the instruments circular level, it may not power up properly.

2.3 Setup over a Benchmark using the Internal Laser Plummet

This topic describes an instrument setup over a marked ground point using the laser plummet.
Geo-referencing of the ScanStation C10 is established by setting up over a known or assumed
control point, with optional target extraction to set the azimuth direction, and establishing a
local or global coordinate system. The ScanStation C10 allows you to traverse, resection or freestation. Known azimuth or known backsight measurements can be observed.
It is always possible to set up the instrument without the need for a marked ground point.
The laser plummet described in this topic is built into the vertical axis of the instrument. It
projects a red spot onto the ground, making it appreciably easier to centre the instrument.

The laser plummet cannot be used in conjunction with a tribrach equipped with
an optical plummet.

2.4 Determine the Instruments Height

To get an accurate height measurement use the GHM008 instrument height meter in conjunction
with the GHT196 distance holder which are both included with the scanner.

1. Place tripod centrally over the ground

point, level instrument as instructed
in previous section.
2. Click GHT196 distance holder to
tribrach.
3. It must "snap" onto the cover over an
adjusting screw.
4. Unfold measuring tongue, pull out
tape measure a little.
5. Insert GHM008 instrument height
meter in the distance holder and
attach.
6. Pull measure in the direction of the
ground point until the tip of the
measuring tongue touches the
marked point on the ground, keep
under tension and do not allow to
sag, clamp if necessary.
7. Read height of the instrument
(ground - tilt axis) in the reading
window at the red marking (in the
example 1.627 m).
Figure 8

The tilt axis height of the ScanStation C10 is 250 mm. Take care to use the
GHM008 which has a special scale to measure the height of instruments with a
tilt axis height of 250 mm. Do not use a tape with any other scale.
Alternatively the instrument height can be measured with a common, 1:1 scaled measuring tape
from the point on the ground to the little notch under the red Leica logo at both side covers of
the scanner.

When the window is closed down by picking the Enter button the values for Horizontal and
vertical angle are set in the appropriate text boxes.

Figure 23

Defining the Resolution

In the resolutions sub-menu are four pre-defined resolution settings available. When choosing
one of them the resolution is shown in the text boxes below. E.g. a Medium Res setting will scan
a grid with a point spacing 10cm x 10cm in a distance of 100 meters. The number of points in Hz
and V are calculated depending on the set filed of view.
There is also the opportunity to customize the resolution. When choosing the Custom Res the
Distance, Horizontal and Vertical textboxes are activated. Here you can enter the point spacing
at a user specified distance.

The higher the resolution is set the longer the scan duration will be.
If the user does not know the distance to the object e.g. a faade, but the resolution has to be
e.g. 1x1 cm, a distance measurement can be done.
Picking the Dist button, a new window appears in the display (Figure 24). It shows the real-time
image from the internal camera. The seek mode can be used to centre the image about the pick
on the screen. This also sets the cross to where the measurement will be taken. You can also
change the view by turning the scanner and moving the on screen slide bar.

needed to connect the scanner in Cyclone the IP Address box will stay inactive.

Once a ScanStation C10 is added to Cyclone any ScanStation C10 can be used
with this single added scanner in ScanControl.
On pressing the OK button the Scanner Name is shown in the Cyclone Navigators SCANNERS

5.6 ScanControl Viewer

The Scan Control viewer represents the field of view of ScanStation C10. By default a spherical
grid is displayed at 10 degree increments spanning 360 degrees by 270 degrees. Zero horizontal
and zero vertical are each represented by blue lines which intersect at the scanners default zero
orientation. The user specifies an area within this field of view which determines where images
and scans are taken.

Field-of-View (for images and scans)

Figure 54

1) Define a field of view by fence:

Use Panoramic Rectangle Fence Mode to define the field of view for taking images and scans
by ScanStation.

In Panoramic Rectangle Fence Mode

draw a rectangle in front of the scanner by clicking a

point on the screen and dragging the cursor down and to the right. Clicking and dragging to
the left will create the inverse fence.

In Panoramic Rectangle Fence Mode

pass the mouse over the center of the fence in the

Scan Control viewer. Notice the cursor changes. Left-click and drag to move the existing fence
around in the viewer.

Resize the rectangular fence through left-click and dragging the sides/corners of the defined
fence.

Clicking and dragging with an existing fence in the Scan Control viewer will over
right the old fence as the new one is drawn.

In the Field-of-View section of the Scanner Control Panel, notice how the extents will update
with each fence adjustment in the Hz Window and V Window fields.
2) Define a field of view numerically
Working in the Field-of-View section of the Scanner Control Panel, manually enter the numbers
to define the extents of the rectangular fence.

Notice how the rectangular fence updates as each field is modified.

Use the Presets in the Field-of-View section to quickly define the rectangular fence.
Using Target All in the Presets is a quick way to target ScanStations full 360
degrees by 270 degrees.

Probe

Figure 56

Probing for distance is an optional operation. Probing is done specifically to determine the
distance to an object and to set the scan density at that range from the scanner.

Probe for a distance

Switch to Panoramic Rectangle Fence Mode.

Create a rectangular fence. Note the crosshairs at the center of the defined fence. This is the
point to which the distance will be measured to.

Click the Probe button. The Probe dialog is updated to show the azimuth, elevation, and
range to the crosshairs.

To move the probe reference point, hold down the Control button and left-click
anywhere in the Scan Control Viewer. Pressing probe again will update the
respective measurements.
Probing can also be done in the Resolution dialog in the Scanner Control Panel.

Resolution

Figure 57

With a rectangular fence drawn to define the area to be scanned in the Scan Control, it is
possible to set the scan density.
The Sample Spacing determines the spacing of the scanned points at the distance shown in the
Range field. Objects closer in range will be scanned at a higher density while objects further
away are scanned at a lesser density.
Sample Spacing can be either manually entered or quickly set using Presets.
The Number of Points displays the number of points to be scanned in the horizontal and vertical
directions.

Figure 58

Any adjustments to Range, Sample Spacing, or Number of Points may adjust the other fields in
this dialog. For example if the range in the image above was increased to 20m, and the Sample
Spacing stays the same, the Number of Points automatically increases to maintain the Sample
Spacing at the farther Range.

5.8 Scanning and taking Images

Acquire Images
The ScanStation C10 scanner is designed to acquire photographic images that are assembled in a
mosaic to create a full 360 degree panoramic photographic representation of the area that may
be scanned.
Each single 17 x 17 mosaic photo is a 4 Mega-pixels image with 1920 x 1920 pixels resolution.
A full panoramic image with 360 x 270 consists of 230 photos. It takes about 10 minutes to
acquire a fulldome image depending on the surrounding brightness conditions.
You can capture an image of the scene from the point of view of the scanner and display it in
the Scan Control window. This image is useful for determining the field of view of the scanner,
as well as for targeting areas of the scene to be scanned. While it can be very helpful for a
number of reasons, having a valid image in the Scan Control window is not required for targeting
the scanner or for actual scanning.

Note that the colours in the acquired image are mapped to the point cloud upon
creation.

Adjust Exposure
ScanStation C10 takes photos in 17 x 17 degree mosaics within the FOV specified. The light
exposure may vary over different sections of the area to be scanned. Different exposures may
need to be set for different areas of the FOV.
The Exposure can be set manually for each single image by using the Image | Adjust Exposure
dialogue.

Figure 59

To get images with a homogenous look the automatic exposure time function can be chosen
from the pull-down list.
The easiest way to understand the best exposure setting when using the manual mode is to do
a small test image:
In Panoramic Rectangular Fence Mode, create a small rectangular fence spanning roughly a 5
degree by 5 degree area in the Scan Control Viewer.
Click Image | Get Image, or click the Get Image icon.
Ensure that the Scan Control is set to show the images by clicking Image | Show Images.
It may take the scanner several seconds to acquire and transfer the mosaic of tiled images
before they are displayed. If the orientation of the scanner is changed or the exposure needs
adjustment, select Get Image again to update the image.
36 - 43

Module 1 - Scanning with ScanStation C10

Scanner & Scanning Features

Earlier images are overwritten by the last picture taken.

Acquire a Scan
After taken the images, defining the target region and adjusting the scan settings, the next step
is to begin the scan.

In the Scan Control window, click the Scan button.

Preview the incoming scan in a ModelSpace by clicking the Open Viewer button in the Project
Setup section of the Scanner Control Panel.

The progress bar at the bottom of the Scan Control informs the user of the time left until the
end of the scan.

When the scan has finalized, the points are linked to the database and the colour of the
points will change from green to multi-hued.

When the scan has finished, the user then has the opportunity to define a new FOV with new
scan parameters. For example, a higher density scan of a detail can be made and overlaid in
the same ScanWorld.

Pause a scan: Clicking Pause at the bottom of the Scanner Control Panel while a scan is in
progress will temporarily suspend the scanners operation. Use this, for example, when the
FOV is temporarily blocked by traffic.

Stop a scan: Clicking Stop at the bottom of the Scanner Control Panel will stop and finalize a
scan that is in progress.
Acquired point clouds can be overlaid in the scan control by clicking Image | Show ModelSpace.

Acquire Targets
Targets are used in the registration process. When targets are placed in the scene and scanned
properly, a vertex can be extracted and used as a tie point to assist in the registration between
ScanWorlds. For example, a target that has been scanned and extracted in two separate
ScanWorlds will be given the same registration label and used as a tie point to assist in
registering those ScanWorlds together.
The supported types of targets can be found in Module 02 - Scanner and Scanning Features.
Following steps describe how to acquire and add targets to ControlSpace in an efficient way.
1) Make the point cloud visible in the ScanControl window by using Image | Show ModelSpace.
2) Navigate to a target and set a pick point close to the centre of the Targets point cloud.

Scanner & Scanning Features

Module 1 - Scanning with ScanStation C10

37 - 43

Figure 60

3) Then navigate to next target and pick the target in Multipick mode.
4) Repeat steps 2 to 3. When done go to menu Scanner Control | Acquire Targets

If picking multiple targets, ensure that all multi-selected targets are of like type.
For example, do not multi-select both Black/White targets and HDS targets.
5) From the Acquire Targets window choose Acquire | Acquire HDS Targets from Pick Points or
Acquire B&W targets from Pick Points - depending on which type of targets were picked.
6) Deselect picked points before and multipick the other type. Repeat step 2 to 5 for the new
picked targets.

Figure 61

Depending on how many picks were made, a list of potential candidates will fill the Acquire
Targets window. These candidate targets have to be verified visually in the ModelSpace. A
ModelSpace View can be easily opened using the Open Viewer button from Project Setup in
Scanner Control Panel.

38 - 43

Module 1 - Scanning with ScanStation C10

Scanner & Scanning Features

All candidates are ticked by default in order to be acquired and labeled with temporary
consecutive numbers for ease of identification. Untick any candidates which are not correct.
Enter your own IDs, as the pink numbers displayed in the ModelSpace are arbitrary and will be
lost after acquisition.
Click in each candidate targets Target Ht field and enter the Target Ht. For example, if the target
is set up over a control point, enter the height measured from the ground point to the center of
the target.
Highlighting the target in the # column in the Acquire Targets window centers the associated
ModelSpaces view on the pick associated with that candidate. Use this to quickly double check
everything is correct.

Figure 62

In the example illustrated above, Target BW400 and SP500 have no known height added.

Note: Recheck is an option for listed targets that have been acquired and the
user would like to recheck the accuracy of their positions, for example, if the
scanner or target has moved.
Click on Acquire to start the target acquisition process. In this example the box for target
HDS200 will be unchecked.
To view the target being scanned, click on the target in the # column. The ModelSpace View
will then be centred on the target being scanned.
The scanner first performs a rough scan of the general area of the target to locate the centre of
the target.
Cyclone software then automatically initiates a fine scan of the center of the target and then
uses an algorithm to locate the center. A vertex or Tie Point is then created at the calculated
center of the target (Figure 64).
During acquisition the Status column changes from Acquiring rough scan to Acquiring fine
scan to Target acquired and ready for recheck

As mentioned above the target HDS200 was not acquired because it was not checked in the
Acquire column.
Always visually check results of target extraction before changing scanner positions (e.g. if
target is scanned at an angle and cannot be acquired accurately, or if there is data missing from
target, etc.

Figure 64

Target fine scans will by default be visually switched off after the tie point has been extracted. In
order to make them visible again, use the ScanWorld Explorer in the ModelSpace (Tools | Scanner

6 Data Management on C10

When a project is scanned onboard the data has to be transferred from the Scanner to a
computer for further processing. In the MMI - Management menu the projects available on the
internal HDD can be edited. Then the data can be transferred.
There are two different ways transferring the data from the scanner.

6.1 Data transfer via USB device

Make sure that the used USB-device is NTFS formatted and has enough free space to store the
data.
Remove the C10s USB dust protection cap and plug in USB drive.

Some USB devices (e.g. HDDs) have high power consumption. Make sure the
scanner has enough power for the transfer left or use an external power supply
for the USB drive.
When the Statusbar (Figure 12) is showing both the external memory device e) and the status d)
the transfer can be started.
with a green arrow
From the Main Menu go to

Tools

Transfer

Projects

The current Project is shown in the projects textbox. On picking the Textbox the Projects Menu
comes up and the required project can be chosen. Picking the Cont soft key, the selected Project
name is entered into the projects Textbox. To start the transfer, just pick the Cont soft key.
Depending on the projects size it may take a while to proceed. During the transfer progress the
do not remove icon
is shown in the status bar. When the transfer is finished the green arrow
is shown again and the USB device can be removed.
The data on the USB device is stored in following structure:

Figure 65

Now the collected data can be imported into Cyclone. Connect the USB device to your computer.
Open Cyclone and create a new database for the project to be imported to. Also an already
existing project and / or can be chosen. Highlight the Database by a single click in the Navigator
and go to File | Import ScanStation C10 data

41 - 43

Navigate to the folder called Scanner-Projects and press the OK button. A new window will come
up showing the available projects which can be imported.

Figure 66

Choose the project of interest and click OK. The import process is starting.
If the Scanner tilted during the operation an import warning will pop up. Choose if the out of
tilt range-data should be imported or not. In the example below there were two scans taken.
During one of the scans the scanner tilted significantly.

Figure 67

When importing the data from ScanStation C10 - make sure you set the
preferences for survey mode.
In Preferences, if Scan | Survey Mode is set to "Yes", Cyclone creates Stations as part of the
Navigator project structure. If it is set to "No", then Stations are not created, but the Station
name is prefixed to the ScanWorld name.

The scan data can also be imported directly without project information.
Choose Files | Import and navigate to the scans folder (Figure 65). Select a
*.bin file to import. The scan is imported as a single ScanWorld.

6.2 Transferring data when connected with Cyclone

When an onboard scan has been done the scanned data can be imported directly from the
scanner into Cyclone. Boot up the ScanStation C10 and establish the network connection.
Run Cyclone Navigator and open the ScanControl. Select an already existing Database or create a
new one from Cyclone Navigator. When done connect to the Scanner as described in the
chapters before.
From the Scanner menu select the Import Data from ScanStation C10 and the Import dialogue
(Figure 66) is comes up. Select the Project and press ok.

Figure 68

The import may take a while and when finished the ScanStation C10 can be shut down. The
downloaded data is directly imported to the selected database.

7 Troubleshoot
C10s Log Files
Plug in a USB device with enough free disc space. The logfiles are stored as text format and are
not compressed. To get them into a handy file size use e.g. zip or rar packing programm.
Navigate to the Transfer Menu (Tools | Transfer) and choose the Logs button in the SoftKey bar.
The Transfer will be started immediately.

Format the internal HDD

When the scanner is used a lot with onboard control the internal HDD can be fragmented or
sectors can be corrupted. The format command will fix the corrupted sectors and free the HDD
from all data.

When running a format all data stored on the internal HDD will be lost!
