FOOD OR FRIEND

YULIN 2015 : Gorging onto mans best friend; Global fury fails
to hinder the notoriety of the feast
As many as 10000 dogs are being skinned alive , butchered and
voraciously eaten as a part of the summer solstice celebration at Yulin , a
southeastern province in Peoples Republic Of China. The global outrage has
been pouring onto the barbaric and morally defunct practice which involves
cramming the dogs into wire cages, denying them food and water for days until
they are finally battered or worst skinned alive. Most of the dogs are stolen pets
( recognised via their collars) which has waged a war between the dog meat
industry and the burgeoning army of pet lovers in China. No, we do not object
eating dog meat but even the Local civilians have shunned the inhumane way
little pups are being slaughtered and most shockingly next to elementary
schools, leaving deep impressions on vulnerable members of the society. Is this
the way China wishes to showcase itself on the global front : A ruthless nation
celebrating inhumane practices oblivious of the image its casting on the rest of
the world or the food safety concerns this callous practice is triggering?

Yes, This isn't solely an animal welfare issue; it's also a food safety disaster .
Stastically, China has the world's second highest incidence of rabies in humans.
Yulin tops the chart in China with the increased incidence of Rabies coming in
from the handling and slaughter of vast numbers of unvaccinated dogs. Most of
the dogs transported are treated brutally and often poisoned in order to capture
them has raised eyebrows on the legal system of China for allowing such a
practice to continue. Historically ,The consumption of dog meat does have a
cultural precedence in China. At its height during the Han Dynasty (202 - 220
AD), dog meat was considered a delicacy but the practice was shunned by
subsequent dynasties as indecent and dogs were regarded as companions and
hunter buddies. The festival dates back to 2009 in the southwest region of
China to mark the Summer solstice.
Chinese activists , protestors and angry pet owners have retaliated fiercely but
their placards reading Punish Illegal Dog Transport were swiftly taken
off. Yang Xiaoyun, an animal loverwho paid 7,000 yuan (1,130), to save 100
dogs has received international appreciation. But why is only China facing the
global outcry and fury ? Every year 1.9m animals are slaughtered in a meat
factory in Great Britain in ahumane way which involves
beating, electrocuting and even gassing to near-unconsciousness. And why to
forget the whale and dolphins slaughter festival in Denmark where teens
showcase their manhood by barbarically bleeding these intelligent creatures.

But how much worse can we get when mans best friend is writhing in such
agony? As per biologists all over the world , A dog will love you and come back
to protect you even if you lash him and not treat him well. And despite a dogs
faithfulness and compassion , the Yulin festival is basking in all its glory!
Still cannot fathom the unnecessary boasting over our smartness when our
insides are morally defunct and devoid of humanity !
