ON JUVENILE CAUSATION

The idea that juvenile delinquency is caused by environmental factors has a long
history to match its development. As societies developed more crimes or delinquent
acts are committed to the extent that it devastates the very cause of mans existence
(Ladrino, 2008)
When the various structures and components of social system do not work
harmoniously, social disorganization occurs. In this situation, means of social control are
weakened and institutions become ineffective to meet the needs of the members. Lack
of parental guidance and control over children may lead to engagement in some kinds
of activities that are contrary to the norms of society. Since the child is not yet socialized
fully well, he may find difficulties in adjusting to the norms of the larger groups. Children
are driven away from the homes and push them to look for the group where they will
find acceptance and security. Usually these places or groups are conducive to the
development of deviant behaviour or delinquency (Zulueta, 2005)

In an online newspaper Cebu Daily News reported by Bernadette Parco,
supported the above article that lack of affection, attention and fun are pushing a minor
to join gangs. According to a psychologist, however, the lack of parental affection and
attention is what forces these teenagers to get into trouble.
Psychologist Imelda Villar said that most of the crime and violent acts committed
by young people stem from deprivation of affection and lack of recognition of their
capabilities or talents. She also added that there are five genetic needs of human
beings that have to be fulfilled. These are survival, love and belongingness, power,
freedom and fun. They should be given tools to survive and feel that they belong to a
community. According to her, if these are thwarted, adolescents will form mistaken
goals. The mistaken goals that are based on real or imagined experiences of pain result
in teenagers who seek attention, their power-striving, revenge or vengeful actions and
feelings of inadequacy that moves them to give up on the idea that they could have a
positive outlook in life. She added that it results in irresponsible, unrealistic and wrong
behavior. (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews, Filed Under: Crime, Police,
