Welcome to the 2nd Edition of the South West’s Swim 21
Club Newsletter!
Congratulations – Re-accreditations, Accreditations and Revalidations!
Well done to Penzance, Plymouth Leander and West Dorset Warriors Swimming Clubs who
have all achieved Swim 21 for the 2nd time! There efforts were commended at the national
panel and their re-accreditation highlights how all clubs are striving to develop their swimmers
and clubs to the highest levels.
The panel also featured some firsts for the region. West Wiltshire Diving became the first
diving club in the South West to become accredited at teaching level. Additionally, 7xtreme
became the first foundation level club to be accredited in the South West and in the country –
well done!
Several clubs were also revalidated and have shown dedication to the swim 21 process, Truro,
Thornbury, Portishead and Clayesmore swimming clubs all were successfully revalidated.
Gina is from Poole S.C. and Dorset County ASA and began her aquatic
experience as a Club swimmer with Poole S.C. and then became a
swimming teacher with the club. She went onto achieve ASA Club
Coach before establishing the Poole SC Junior Squad. Gina is an ASA
Tutor and has sat on the ASA Education Committee until it was
disbanded in 2006 and additionally has had a short time with W.C. ASA
District Judicial Tribunal.
Gina has been on the panel a year and made the decision to join the
panel after retiring as a Deputy Head teacher and becoming the Dorset
County Swimming Development Officer ( 2001 - 2006 ) Much of this
work was initiating the early Swim 21 process. As DCASA Education
Sec. and Volunteer Co-ordinator, she has continued this work as I
would like to see Dorset as the first County with ALL its clubs
accredited …..!!!
Strengths on the panel? Child protection knowledge, open water swimming, school /
community links.
Describe Swim 21 in 3 words Swim 21 Clubs should be „Safe, friendly and efficient‟

Issue 2
May 2008
How do you feel S21 is developing in the South West? Swimming in the South West is
extremely strong and we should be proud of that success. Those clubs who have completed
the Swim 21 process feel it has been of benefit to the club, irrespective of any other material
gain …. However some of us make „heavy weather‟ of the process – more than we need to –
and that puts us off!
What would you say to a club thinking about going through swim 21? „Have a go!‟ -
Appoint a co-ordinator and a lead person for each section – don‟t leave it to one person. Put
Swim 21 update on your committee agenda EVERY time and use the KISS principle – „keep it
simple‟!! - Good luck!
What would you say to a club who are already Swim21? Keep at it – in bite sized chunks –
don‟t put it on the shelf until you are next up for re-accreditation, but view it as a working
document to help with your short and long term planning, hence the importance of keeping it
on the Committee agenda.
Each issue we will be putting the spotlight on an accredited club to see how swim 21 has
impacted the club. If you are an accredited club and would like to take part and have not been
contacted please contact kate.smith@swimming.org for further details.
ASA South West ‘Disability Jigsaw’ Day - Monday 23rd June 2008, 10am –
3pm
The Disability jigsaw day will provide an overview of the LTAD pathway for disability swimming
and raise awareness of what is happening in the South West with regards to disability
swimming. The day will help parties identify partners and show how each partner fits into the
overall structure with an aim to improving what is already on offer and supporting the current
pathway within the South West. If you are involved in disability swimming within your club and
would like to attend the day please contact Leanne Douglas at leanne.Douglas@swimming.org
for more information and to book your place.
Lincoln offers that preparation and planning is essential and should contribute to three quarters
of the work process:
“If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend six sharpening my axe”
