Setting up a ship bunkering project

The key actions to be performed before setting up a ship bunkering
project include:

Ensure that the receiving ship and the bunkering facility are compatible

Develop the LNG bunkering procedure for the concerned ship and bunkering facility

Perform the Safety assessment and HAZOP

Develop a Management Plan for emergency situations in connexion with the Safety
assessment

Set up the organization in charge of the bunkering operations and provide adequate
information, instructions and supervision to the persons involved in the LNG
bunkering
operations
Establish a
training program

38

Design requirements
General design principles:

Avoid the release of gas to the atmosphere

Maximum boil-off generation during the bunkering operation to be taken into account
(depends on the LNG temperature)

Arrangements are to be made for purging / inerting / draining

Arrangemen ts are to be made to detect accidental leakage from LNG / vapour transfer
systems.

39

Design requirements
Emergency Release Couplings (ERC):

Required on the receiving ship bunkering manifold or on the LNG transfer system

it separates at a predetermined section when required, each separated section

containing a self-closing shut-off valve, which seals automatically, allowing to
minimize the release of LNG.

It activates automatically in case of excessive forces.

BV Rules on Gas Fuelled Ships / Engines & IMO Regulations

In response to the demand of the industry, BV has

introduced classification rules for gas fuel engines
and gas fuelled ships:
-NR481 in 2002: Design and installation of dual
fuel engines using low pressure gas,
-NR529 in 2007: Safety rules for gas-fuelled
engine installation on ships.

The IMO has addressed the use of natural gas as

fuel in their Interim guidelines on safety for
natural gas fuelled engine installations in ships
(IMO Res. MSC.285(86) adopted in June 2009)
The IMO has started the elaboration of the
International Code for Gas Fuelled Ships (IGF
code) in 2009 with a targeted adoption in 2014/15.
