Shoes carry us all through our lives, from when were little to when we
reach old age. They accompany us as we take our first tentative steps and
they help us keep our footing as senior citizens. Shoes protect us from
adverse external conditions. They are an expression of our character and
underscore our personality. Shoes are so much more than just apparel or
everyday consumer goods. They give our feet a home.
Since 1774, we the inventors of the footbed have been putting a lot
of thought into how we can enrich our customers lives and make them
more comfortable with high-quality footwear for everything life has to
offer. In an overwhelmingly price-driven consumer landscape, dominated by cheap products from East Asia that are produced under precarious
conditions for both people and the environment, our premium footwear
represents a sensible alternative for all those who set great store by
functionality and quality.
We make our products under top-class conditions at our own production
facilities in Germany, with much of the work done by hand. Each sandal
undergoes 17 stages in the production process. In the case of our closedtoe shoes, well over 100 skilled touches go into making the finished product. The closed-toe models are produced by Portuguese manufacturers
who observe centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship.
Whether traditional craftsmanship or industrial production, all our products meet the highest quality standards you can find in the global shoe
industry. We are uncompromising both in terms of the materials used
(cork, natural latex, copper, brass, wool felt, and the finest leather) and
the way they are processed. Our hand-picked raw materials are sourced
sustainably and as far as nature allows in Europe.
Developing a new collection is a bit like embarking on a long journey.
And although we define ourselves first and foremost by functionality and
quality, we also strive to reflect fashion trends and showcase new facets
of the brand. As we do every year, we have given a lot of thought to how

HEEL CUP
The particularly deep molding in
the heel area supports the foot and
keeps the heel bone in its natural

This flexible and skin-friendly outer sole is soft against

A PERFECT FIT
If youve ever bought shoes, youll be familiar
with the problem that most models only come
in one version. Youll find yourself looking in
vain for different widthp. But thats not the case
with BIRKENSTOCK. Because no two feet are the
same, our original footbed is not only available
in the regular width, but also in a slim width for
smaller feet (in all models).
All you then have to do is adjust the straps
and your BIRKENSTOCK shoes will fit perfectly.

THE ORIGINAL BIRKENSTOCK FOOTBED
OFTEN IMITATED,
NEVER EQUALED
Anyone who talks about footbeds is talking about BIRKENSTOCK. What is now a byword for outstanding comfort was first used
by BIRKENSTOCK in the 1930s to describe anatomically molded insoles offering exceptional support. Unlike the other orthopedic
corrective and support insoles available at the time (which were designed to support and correct medical deformities of the feet),
the footbed was designed to keep feet healthy. The sophisticated design, which is modeled on a footprint in the sand, enables feet
to stand for several hours in the wearers shoes while keeping the strain to a minimum.
It is all thanks to the flexible cork and latex core, which is the starting and reference point for all subsequent developments
developments that are continuing to this day. The original BIRKENSTOCK footbed is still made purely from natural and renewable
materials, such as light natural cork, select jute, high-quality natural latex, and hand-picked suede. The result is a pleasant foot
climate and unbeatable comfort.

PURE FUNCTIONALITY,
LAYER BY LAYER
Just like going barefoot: the BIRKENSTOCK footbed combines natural, renewable materials with outstanding functionality. The soft
lining in high-quality suede is the first layer that boosts comfort. It is wonderfully soft, absorbing moisture and wicking it away
to the thickly woven jute layer below. Beneath this, the cork and latex core is the linchpin of the footbed, cushioning impacts and
supporting the foot every step of the way. The construction is rounded off by a stabilizing layer of coarse jute, with the outer sole
in robust, synthetic EVA providing feet with additional relief.
Anyone who wants their shoes to be a smidgen softer should opt for the BIRKENSTOCK Soft Footbed. Here, a permanently elastic
latex cushion has been integrated beneath the suede lining. It always returns to its original shape and gently cushions every single
step. Youll feel like there are clouds beneath your feet.
Natural leather
Natural leather can be recognized by its untreated
surface. In order to retain its natural and unmistakable appearance, BIRKENSTOCK deliberately refrains
from treating the grain and other natural characteristicp. Each leather product is truly unique just how
nature intended. We use exceptionally sturdy leather
for our uppers, with a thickness of between 2.8 and
3.2 millimeterp.
Nubuck leather
Nubuck is a top-grain leather and features a gently
sanded surface without any imperfections, which
is what makes it so velvety and soft. Just like with
velvet, the fibers shift when you rub your hand over
it, leaving a noticeable nap. Due to its fine fibers, nubuck leather is extremely sensitive to moisture and
color and should therefore be impregnated.
Wool Felt
This is one of the oldest fabrics known to humanity
and a natural fiber of the highest quality. Made from
merino sheeps wool, it boasts many excellent properties: its skin-friendly, elasticated, breathable,
heat-insulating and cooling, and helps keep feet at
the right temperature.
Smooth leather
This term encompasses various leather varieties,
such as patent and foil-coated leather, as well as
pull-up leather. Smooth leather boasts an extremely
even, fine-grain surface. It is noted for its high durability and can withstand pretty much any external
conditionp. If cared for correctly, your smooth leather
shoes will give you years of pleasure.
Birko-Flor
This specially developed synthetic material is an
alternative to leather for upperp. The top layer comprises an easy-care, hygienic PVC material that is
joined to a soft and breathable fleece layer below.
This high-quality material is exceptionally gentle on
the skin, delivers soft comfort, and is tremendously
hard-wearing. Its color can be customized, meaning
it can be worn with all kinds of stylep.
Felt
Felt is an extremely tough material made from synthetic fiberp. The Felts used by BIRKENSTOCK are
exceptionally soft and breathable and are nice and
gentle on the skin. At the same time, the fibers are
highly robust and hard-wearing.
Suede leather
Suede is an umbrella term for all leathers whose exterior has been buffed. Suede features a raw, fibrous,
soft, and therefore flexible surface. As it has a highly
open-pored texture, it is especially effective at permeating sweat.
HAND-PICKED MATERIALS

materials that satisfy the stringent BIRKENSTOCK quality requirements, such as imbued full-grain leather that gets more

Artificial fibers from BIRKENSTOCK are also made from nothing but the finest raw materialp.

SANDALS
A timeless design classic that has become a global hit. The basic Madrid sandal has been wowing the crowds with its timeless design and
health-enhancing functions ever since 1963. The strap, footbed, and toe grips are all designed with the natural rolling motion of the foot
in mind. While the heel rises from the footbed during walking, the toes are encouraged to grip tightly thanks to the rolling motion over
the balls of the feet. When the heel is set down again, the muscles relax. As a result, the Madrid strengthens the foot and calf muscles

manufactured under the best possible conditions in Germany. This long-standing family business is now in its sixth generation and
boasts around 3,000 employees, making it the largest employer in the German shoe industry. Every fourth person in the industry works
for BIRKENSTOCK. The closed shoes are manufactured by partner companies in Portugal. The foot bed, the companys key product, is
likewise produced in Germany.
The historical roots of this proudly traditional company go back as far as 1774. BIRKENSTOCK began using the term foot bed back
in the 1930s and it is still well-known today as a byword for outstanding comfort. By the beginning of the 1970s BIRKENSTOCK had
become a global player and its products were being sold in 90 countries across five continents. In addition to its iconic sandals,
BIRKENSTOCK produces a growing range of closed shoes and childrens shoes, as well as work shoes, specialized orthopedic products
and socks.
BIRKENSTOCK has seven sites throughout Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and Saxony. The companys
headquarters are located in Neustadt (Wied). Further abroad, BIRKENSTOCK has its own distribution companies in the USA, Brazil, Hong

are subjected to stringent quality checks, with ongoing inspections performed on the materialp. Whats more,
our compliance with statutory requirements is continuously tested by independent institutep. And we dont stop
there, either: in many cases, we voluntarily go above and beyond the minimum legal requirementp.
All BIRKENSTOCK sandals and insoles are made at the companys own production facilities in Germany, with
much of the work done by hand. From the baking of the cork and latex footbed to quality assurance on the
packing table, a single sandal undergoes almost 20 stages during the production procesp. For closed-toe shoes,
this figure is many times higher. Our closed-toe shoes are produced by partners in Portugal with whom we
have been working closely for many yearp. These partners fulfill the same high quality standards as our own
production facilitiep.
