Dear Parents,
After reading our class news, be sure to click on the Second Grade Home link above or go to
http://shakeragsecondgrade.weebly.com/ where you will find links to current math, science, and social studies
information. (ELA coming soon) You will also find our second grade Symbaloo at the bottom of the home page. It
contains links to many great practice sites.
Notes for this week:
* BOOK FAIR: Mrs. Segraves HR will shop on Monday, Oct. 3, 12-12:24. You are welcome to join your child. We
will go straight to lunch from the Book Fair, if you would like to stay for lunch, 12:24-12:54. You can also visit and
take your child to the Book Fair any day after lunch 12:54-1:20 (recess).
*STORYBOOK NIGHT: October 5th, 6:30-8:00. The silly second grade teachers, as well as many others, will be
presenting. We would be thrilled to see you there! (Shopping hours 5:30-8:15)
*SCIENCE FUN LAB: October 5th (Segraves HR 9:05-9:50, Allmans HR 1:25-2:15) A BIG thank you to all who
have already volunteered! The students LOVE Science Fun Lab and especially love seeing their parents at school!
We are still in need of a few more volunteers. If you can spare just one hour to help, we would really appreciate it.
You just need to show up 15 minutes before to receive simple instructions.

**IMPORTANT!!!: Please be sure you have completed the volunteer requirements no later than October
2nd. It only takes a few minutes and after you do it once, you are set for the rest of the school year.

MATH:
Fast Facts: practice a few minutes daily. Assessment given on Friday. (2 minutes for 25 problems)
If your child is able to complete the assigned set of sums quickly, give them problems in the same fact family to
solve. (example: for the equation 3+6=9, ask 9-3=? and 9-6=? ) Subtraction fast facts are coming soon and usually
arent quite as easy for the children. Get a head start on practice!
Unit tests are next week for both levels. Often more than the math skills themselves, students struggle with
reading directions and word problems carefully. Encourage your child to be careful, to make sure they are
answering the question that is being asked, and to double check their work.
Your child will bring home his/her binder each night next week. Please return it each day. I encourage you to ask
your child to explain his/her work and practice as necessary each night. I gave out review practice sheets today. .
Completion of all of these sheets is NOT REQUIRED. These can be used for practice over the next week, as
well as any unsolved problems on pages in their binder. You could also make up similar problems for them to solve.
*Math 2.1 (on)-

Our Unit Test will be given in sections over Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. This test will cover all of the skills
we have covered thus far (see parent letter in binder &/or on the second grade website). We will spend the first
part of the week reviewing as well as working with bar graphs.
*Math 2.2 (Adv)Our Unit Test will be given Wednesday and Thursday. This test will cover all of the skills we have covered thus far
(see parent letter in binder &/or on the second grade website). We will spend the first part of the week reviewing.
*Science- LIVING THINGS: Questions to ask your child: What are the stages of a butterfly lifecycle? What is
the difference between a chrysalis and a cocoon?
*Reading- Continue reading each night from the bag book. Once students have read the bag book with you, they
can read from other book of their choosing. Please sign the reading log each Thursday night so students can return
them Friday. The bag book is a homework grade each week. We continue looking deeper at our characters next
week. Have your child practice telling you how their character responds to a problem they face. Discuss with your
child the difference between a feeling you have and a personality trait.
*Writing/Grammar- We are continuing to work on our small moment story. We have been practicing how to go
back and read our story like detectives to find where we made mistakes (editing.) Students learned to circle words
they do not know how to spell and come back to them later. Please work with your child on fixing their own mistakes
(capital letters, punctuation, asking does that word look like it is spelled right.) The writing assessment for
personal narratives will be given the week of October 10 th.
We will have our 3rd spelling test of the year on Thursday October 6th. Your child should have their new spelling
words in their agenda tonight

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,
Kellie Segraves & Amber Allman
