No, this is not a fiendishly-substituted headline

from an adult magazine. Its actually about
two new Juniper Research Limited studies
(UK marketing research specialist) that have
landed on my desk causing a big streamof-consciousness thud. And for this tech
nerd, the studies outline two rather exciting
motoring predictions.
Sock-to-the-face number one: by 2020 at
least 17 million hybrid and electric vehicles
will be on the roads. One of the main reasons
consumers will be increasingly adopting this
type of vehicle is based on Range Anxiety
diminishing as battery technology evolves
and recharging infrastructure becomes more
developed. The Ill run out of juice in the middle
of nowhere... anxiety should, by then, be a
thing of the past. Continuing education on the
environmental impact of fossil fuels, attractive
and desirable vehicle options (Tesla, BMW and
Nissan are leaders here) and reduced cost/
change incentives, will be crucial.
And indeed the report, titled Hybrid and
Electric Vehicles: Consumer and Commercial
Markets, found that electric car makers are
prioritising range as the key issue. The aim
is to provide cars that can go for over 300
kilometres between charges. This writer in
particular cant wait to forget the smell of petrol
in the morning
And the second news wallop: a prediction
that by 2021 there will be a major surge in
autonomous vehicle adoption. And the prediction
goes on to state that by 2025 there will be 20
million fully autonomous self-driving cars on
our roads. Of course, live trials have already

commenced in the USA and Europe and

also recently in Adelaide while government
legislations and the infrastructure systems
required for this technology to become
prevalent are being further developed as I write.
Interestingly, it was also raised that widely used
safety systems such as automated emergency
braking, satellite cruise control, lane departure
assist, etc are already preparing drivers for
the considerable psychological leap of faith
that may be required for the acceptance of
a fully-automated driverless vehicle. In this
space, the top players and leaders are most
notably Google, Volvo, Daimler, Tesla (again) and
Apple. And that two of the largest computer
corporations on the planet are so heavily
involved is a confident affirmation for eventual
realisation and implementation even if a
satisfactory solution for the Trolley Problem
(where an autonomous vehicles logic system
is faced with making a choice between two
disastrous outcomes) has not yet been resolved.
So as our ultra-quiet electric cars drive us to
our destinations, either through winding country
roads or in the traffic-heavy urban grid, well sit
back, relax and calmly crank the tunes

SHOPPING CAR AUDIO

A recent survey
possibly inspired by the
Consumer Electronics Show 2016
by the International Council of
Shopping Centres (ICSC) showed
that in the USA (a sometimes
reliable marker for how the rest
of the western world may also
behave) during the Holiday season
last year, electronics spending by
consumers surpassed every other
product category.
According to the poll, in the
last quarter of 2015, 51 percent
of consumers were spending

06

on consumer electronics while

previous toppers apparel and toys
saw percentages of 49 and 42
respectively. Surprisingly, food and
beverages spend was 34 percent
music be the food
Honing down further into
our space and tied in with the
consumer electronics spending,
a report by CEOutlook on
2014 car electronics spending
showed that spending totalled
US$231 million and that in the
important car loudspeaker
category the top five companies

#01_2016
Australian Incar Entertainment #03_2016

owned close to 60 percent of

the market share. Seeing that
theres hundreds of brands out
there the top five hold what
may seem an insurmountable
advantage and terrific market
presence/recognition. The top five
performers in the USA are, in order
of market share: Kicker, JL Audio,
Pioneer, Alpine and Kenwood.
It would be an interesting
comparison to see what figures
and company rankings our local
market would exhibit. But perhaps

Siri access for hand-free commands that can be
applied to sending and receiving texts, listening

to voicemail and accessing Apple Maps and all

manner of App functionality.
Android smartphones are also catered for
via JVCs Smartphone Control App which mirrors
your Android devices screen and allows full
control via the head unit.
The KW-V820BT extends its feature set
to include the latest Bluetooth HFP1.6- and
AVRCP1.5-enabled chip with improved voice

fidelity, hands-free telephony, of course, and

Also featured are multiple inputs and outputs
including dual USB, auxiliary, two camera inputs

CONTROL

The car is the latest battleground

for IoT (the Internet Of Things), with
the Ford-owned software company Livio using
CES to show proof-of-concept for integrating
Control4s smart-home technology as an app
in a connected car. Using an Android phone
and a Toyota head-display unit, the Control4
demo was accomplished by leveraging
SmartDeviceLink (SDL) technology, Livios
open-source software designed specifically to
integrate Internet functionality into vehicles.
The Control4 app syncs with the head unit
to access and control smart-home devices such
as thermostats, lights, locks and garage doors,
right from the drivers seat. The app can initiate
automation scenes from the dashboard, so that
the driver could touch Arrive before turning

12

into the driveway to automatically turn on

relevant lights, get the heat going, even transfer
a current music playlist from car to the home
audio system.
Ford itself also announced plans to integrate
Amazons Alexa into future vehicles to allow
improved voice control of a full connected
experience, while Volkswagen put its smart
electronics to less controversial use than of late
in showing the rapid-charging BUDD-e concept
electric van (below), the first vehicle based on
the all new Modular Electronics Platform (MEB),
and loaded with connectivity able to call home
to control air con, turn lights on or off, check
to see if your kids are home or, in the other
direction, to receive alerts if your kids are driving
BUDD-e over the speed limit...

4G OR NOT 4G
Axis offers a number of
stainless steel brackets to
accommodate the CLR8 on
any popular vehicle. Shown
here is the BB4FR bracket
for the Ford Ranger.

Its the age of communication and in this wide and vast

island of ours the mobile phone has been an ubiquitous
tool to remain in touch, even in outback Australia and other
remote areas of the country. Of course, amplification of the
mobile phone antenna reception becomes all the more
important in such situations.
So in the 4WD space a good and reliable antenna may
make, at best, the difference between being immobile for
some time and getting back on the road asap or, at worst, the
difference between life and death.
AudioXtra distributes the Axis range of high quality
antennas of which the CLR8 is the all bells-and-whistles
model (yes, there is such a thing in the antenna world).
The CLR8 is suitable for use in a wide range of functions
for UHF CB Radios, AM/FM Radio, internet broadband, Next
G, GSM, 3G and 4G, Commercial VHF, HF, 27MHz and even for
Marine purposes. The difference between the CLR8 and most
garden variety antennas is that it caters to a variety of the
Telcos frequency bands of transmission. As you may know,
the frequency spectrums range from GSM to 3G and on the
very fast 4G including the latest developments by the major
carriers offering the no-longer-used analogue Television
spectrum of 700MHz.
The CLR8 caters for all of the above while improving
reception strength assuring clear and strong reception
wherever it may be needed. The heavy stainless steel spring
design allows flexibility and makes for a strong and durable
connect with the antenna proper which is made of high
quality fibreglass. The antenna is effective and attractive
whether mounted on a bulbar, mirror, roof or bonnet position.
A 5.3m coaxial cable assembly is included with the CLR8
allowing for a variety of mounting locations even in large
vehicles. The arrangement is terminated to FME for easy
installation and allows fuss-free feeding of the cable through
the firewall or vehicle panels without cutting or re-soldering.
To further ease installation options, Axis offers several
high quality stainless steel mounting bracket options.

High strength stainless

steel spring allows flexing
while preventing damage.

Spanish automotive technology research and developer

Ficosa is about to launch into production with a novel system
for viewing the environment around the vehicle which may
prove to be extremely useful on the 4WD track and trail.
To be labelled CMS (Camera Monitor System), the system
aspires to provide an alternative to the rear and side view
mirrors (with the dreaded blind spots relegated to history)
by using a series of cameras strategically placed around the
vehicle. In-vehicle screens display views from around the
cars immediate vicinity. Aside from providing the obvious
extra safety element, the system has enormous potential
(Ficosa has been granted a number of patents, were told)
for the inclusion in the multitude of systems required in the
developing autonomous car. Vctor Iglesias, Ficosas Systems
Architect states, the electronic mirror offers a new safer and
more comfortable driving experience through the inclusion
in the vision systems of ADAS (Advanced Systems Driver
Assistance), as the traffic detection function, which provides
information to the driver about the vehicles around it.
Ficosa has been developing ever more sophisticated
versions of the system since its inception in 2007 and

is about to launch into full production with its fourthgen version.

Alan Montesi, Ficosas ADAS business unit director:
Unlike other components manufacturers, Ficosa offers
the added value of developing the whole system of the
electronic mirror thanks to our expertise in electronic
engineering and our extensive know-how in vision systems.
We implement the full integration of this solution to provide
it completely finished to the cars manufacturers, being able
to include additional options such as the cleaning system,
heated camera and the blinkers function.
The CMS system aims to be compliant with the latest
regulations in this developing technological area. The camera
system boasts low latency 60Hz imaging, HDR (High Dynamic
Range) sensor processing for clearer and sharper images and
wide angle lenses.

Pro Series offers one of the widest ranges in towing

and 4WD accessories on the market and have recently
introduced the Silent Hitch Pin.
The company offers a comprehensive product portfolio
for the off-roader and trailer market including high quality
weight distribution systems, goosenecks, receiver hitches,
jacks, winches, trailer brake controls, trailer breakaway
systems, cargo management and much more.
The recently-announced Silent Hitch Pin has been
designed to dramatically reduce the rattle normally
associated with standard trailer ball mounts. The Silent Hitch
Pins unique keyway pushes the trailer ball mount against
the far edge of the hitch receiver; this in-turn creates friction
which results in a substantial reduction in audible noise.
As an additional benefit, the Silent Hitch Pin also extends
life, reduces wear on the trailer ball mount and eliminates
hitch-box cracking or bolt breaking while being a snap to use
and adjust which can be done with a simple and common
spanner.
The Pro Series Silent Hitch Pin retails at $33.00 and is
available at caravan and camping stores around the country.

all-round quality.
So it was with barely-held exuberant
excitement that we arrived at the BMW press car

Display screen that sits centrally upon the
dash. Its not a touch screen, so navigation of
the various menus and functions is conducted
via the centre console-mounted spin wheel and
push select system. For the drive from BMWs
depot back to our office the irst thing we did
was pair the phone for Bluetooth hands-free
telephony. his was dead-easy and iPhone 6s
pairing to the 330is system was done and dusted
within 30 seconds.
Equal ease was encountered when accessing
the navigation system in order to wind our way
through Mascot near Sydneys airport back
across to the other side of the bridge to our
office. Again, this is done via the wheel through
a process of selecting letters from the alphabet to
enter the suburb/street name, etc.

TECH & AV SYSTEMS

he Touring version we collected ($86,864 as
tested with optional M Sport package) featured a
wealth of technologies dedicated to the various
systems including the extensive audio visual setup all under BMWs ConnectDrive concept. For
the former, you have a crystal-clear colour Head
Up Display (HUD) which depicts travelling speed
and navigation cues (more on the GPS system
later), voice control for most functions/menu
items, engine stop start for fuel efficiency, Lane
Departure Warning system, front-end collision
warning with automatic braking, Dynamic
Damper Control with various driving modes,

Were becoming somewhat more accustomed

to this system of command entry as opposed to
the touchscreen method ubiquitously used in
aftermarket head units. Once the destination
has been selected and the GPS system was up
and running we were pleased with its accuracy,
its well-selected 3D landmarks and general
graphics quality.
he reverse camera engages automatically
when Reverse gear is selected, of course,
but has a few added tricks up its sleeve. he
parking guidance lines change colour for
further parking ease depending on steering
wheel movement and turn position. he reverse
camera also pairs up with a number of sensors
and ancillary cameras to provide added views
(even mocked up from above the car quite
confounding) around the vehicle for complete
visibility in any space.
he audio system features a CD/DVD
mechanism and DAB+ radio along with an AM/
FM receiver. Inside the centre arm rest youll ind
both a USB input for smartphone connectivity
and a mini-jack (3.5mm) auxiliary-in for
connecting an external playback device such as
an MP3 player for example. A handy feature: the
system has an on-board 20GB memory drive
available for music storage from any source.
Once again we connected the iPhone 6s and
pressing the media button popped it up with our
content and art work visible on the screen. An
easy search function allows access to the entire
contents of the library and it is searchable via
artist, album, playlist, etc.
We also tested with a variety of our reference
music via CD and we put both the DAB+ and FM

GRAPPLING WITH GRAPHS

he response graph we use to support each
review is a two-dimensional snapshot of what
a real time analyser (RTA) measures electrically
or hears acoustically. With its calibrated
microphone near the drivers left ear in each
test vehicles cabin and a test CD playing a
special pink noise tone (all frequencies at the
same level) via the cars sound system, this gives
us a more objective and consistent view of its
linearity and tonal balance.
here are a number of other crucial factors
of course, but System Accuracy, and its tonal
repercussions, is very important.
So what does good car sound actually look
like? Well, if we asked that on global enthusiast
forums chances are wed get opinions ranging

from a lat line from the purists to a smiley

face from the clubbers and a lot of curves or
lines in between. In simple terms, the solid
blue line shown above is an idealised frequency
response curve that seems to satisfy the majority
of listeners.
he solid red line represents the extra boost
suggested to overcome road noise in most
vehicles. Not exactly lat lines are they?
hese lines are not set in stone you may
prefer something quite diferent and thats what
tone controls and equalisers are for. But they
are based on years of hearing tests and the
idealised graph shown is, coincidentally of
course, similar to the equal loudness contours
that also seem to score well at sound-of events

around the world. he reason for the extra bass

boost on the move is to overcome low-frequency
road noise, like we measured in a number of test
cars in past features.
Just as well we humans become less sensitive
to bass the lower it goes or wed all be deaf from
thunder, and road noise. On the other hand we
are very sensitive to the mid and upper-range
frequencies used for vocal communication,
although this falls of again towards the onset
of screech thank goodness. For more detailed
information on hearing sensitivity, start by
searching for Fletcher-Munson Curves.
Incidentally, the purists are correct where
electronics are concerned. Most good audio
gear is capable of plucking tiny signals from the
software and making them large enough via
preamps, processing and power stages to drive
loudspeakers at the end of the chain.
With all tone controls and equalisation totally
lat and their line or speaker outputs connected
directly to an RTA we typically see a reasonably
lat line from 20Hz deepest bass all the way to
20kHz extreme treble.
his may all be well and good as far as
electronics, except that our analogue ears dont
actually hear that way and for most of us lat
sounds extremely dull and boring.

SPEEDO RATING
As shown on the frequency response graph (overleaf ), from the upper bass on down
theres a fairly steep down curve which made for a rather thin sound. Activating the bass
controls efficiently dealt with this issue however, we would recommend a fast-sounding
subwoofer of the 10- to 12-inch variety to lesh out the low frequencies with some depth
and punch. We commend the factory systems tonal accuracy even if a speaker system
upgrade would render further gains in terms of dynamic contrast and overall resolution.

radio through their paces (we do not listen to

AM radio so we spared ourselves the shock jock
banalities and sports commentaries). A pleasant
surprise was the DAB+ wide range wherever we
drove to other than in tunnels and carparks we
had zero dropouts.
he factory system has very basic treble
and bass controls and navigating through the
system menus did not reveal any advanced
audio-tailoring features such as multi-band
equalisation or, even less still, digital time
alignment. In fact, as far as we could tell, the bass
and treble controls applied universally across all
format sources.
As far as the cars driveability wed have to say
the 330i Touring M Sport was rather adept. he
19-inch wheels and low proile tyres provided
very good road grip and surprisingly supple
suspension. he shock of bumpy and uneven
road surfaces was comfortably absorbed by the
excellent Adaptive M Suspension system while
road handling around tight corners at speed was
very good, although not quite up to sports car
standards.
BMW knows how to design an interior and the
Tourings is quite simple yet elegant. he leather
seats are comfortable and electrically adjustable
(both driver and passenger) in a multitude of
ways that will adapt to just about any body shape
or size. heres ample use of high grade plastics
generously highlighted by metal accents and
leather trim. We also liked the large sunroof, the
large cargo area and the abundance of storage
compartments throughout the cabin.

SOUND QUALITY
he 330i M-Sports sonics on CD, in particular,
were exemplary in terms of decorum and
tonality. his was an extremely smooth and
tonally correct sound without a trace of hardness
or high frequency hash. Dynamic contrast was,
ultimately a tad reserved, however satisfaction
was still to be had on well recorded material.
he system balances very good levels of
detail and micro-dynamic retrieval without
sounding etched (bright) or artiicial. A similarly
pleasing sound signature was evident via iPod/
iPhone music (both uncompressed iles and
MP3) and DAB+.

AFTERMARKET NECESSITIES

SYSTEM ACCURACY

As has been the case since we irst started

these features in InCar with the wisdom and
guidance of car audio legend Paul Graham
the ultimate aim here is to ofer sensible
advice. No matter how good factory systems
are becoming, they can always be improved
upon whether by expert tuning, intelligent
supplementation or with an overall upgrade
by an experienced car audio specialist.
Granted, component ingredients in
upmarket vehicles can be quite reasonable
in terms of quality. But for audio enthusiasts
seeking accuracy and the highest quality
sound, these factory systems need building
upon. In point form, here are our suggestions
as a general blanket guide:

As mentioned above, the system exhibited a very

high level of tonal accuracy. Tweaking of the
treble and bass controls leshed out the overall
sense of presence and depth, and there was
enough leeway especially in the bass control
to provide a satisfyingly strong low-end (if not a
subwoofer-type slam/depth).
And the listening impressions have correlated
rather well with the measured performance.
heres a somewhat gentle roll-of between
1kHz and 7.5kHz (-6dB) that accounts for the
smoothness and tonal warmth while a steeper
decline of 9dB from 7.5kHz to 10kHz fortiies
same. Good bass response is evident too through
the midbass, however, a dip of over 10dB from
200Hz to 50Hz would indicate the need for a solid
high quality subwoofer/s.

1. Judicious application of sound deadening

products in the doors and other problematic
panels.

75% FOR SYSTEM ACCURACY.

STAGING & IMAGING

2. Almost always required as an improvement
in factory systems is a quality active
subwoofer or one with a separate dedicated
ampliier. Proper placement and enclosure
size are essential here.
3. Re-thinking and rearranging the speaker
locations with a view to increasing stage size
and improving image placement and focus.
4. Further improvements can be had by
replacing the factory speakers, be they splits
or coaxials. More power, in terms of an
additional ampliier to augment the factory
unit, will wring further performance from
the speakers. Youll hear more resolution,
increased dynamic power and a sense of
efortlessness to the sound.

With a tweeter up on the A-pillar and a mid-bass

driver fairly high up on the door trim there was a
promise of good imaging. his came through to
a reasonable extent considering the system does
not provide digital time alignment functionality.
While the soundstage was rather large, imaging
pulled towards the drivers side and tweaking the
balance control addressed this somewhat at the
expense of stage width. Stage depth was limited
to the windscreen plane but were conident that
the addition of a well set-up subwoofer would
extend this to somewhere near the ideal midbonnet plane.
65% FOR SOUNDSTAGE

CONCLUSION
5. Finally, we cant recommend highly
enough the appointing of an installation
specialist. Not only are they trained to
make the system electrically safe, but
they can provide advice and suggest
strategies to maximise your components
audio performance.

Interview
RYAN
FRIEDLINGHAUS
CEO West Coast Customs

Charlie Lewis: What originally got you into

customising cars?
Ryan Friedlinghaus: It was just something I
loved doing ever since I was a kid; customising
bikes and skateboards then what was next, well
obviously you start driving so it was your car. So
really I think it was just in my blood.

CL: Did you ever think you would on your

own business?
RF: When I started doing this it was always
my dream to have a shop to be able to build
everything under one roof. When I built my irst
mini truck, I had to take it from shop to shop to
get it done and its always frustrating doing that.
So I thought, you know what, I want to build a
shop where you can do everything under one
roof. So I think its always been my dream but
when I irst started customising it probably was
not but when I irst got my car and started doing
it and going through the issues that you have at
shops it deinitely became my dream.
CL: Can you tell me what its like owning an
empire in the car business?
RF: Its a challenge, its a challenge owning this
type of empire just because you have everything
under one roof which is great but then you have
artists in every department that you have to get
to work together. heres a balance of attitudes
and the way things are done and now its got its
challenging parts of it but its also really fun at the

same time. To wake up and do what I really love

doing every day so its got its good and its bad
points but its a challenge.
CL: Did you ever think you would make it this big
in the car industry?
RF: Deinitely not, when I started it was me and
one of my friends in the shop and the shop was
about 1200 square feet. So it was really small
like the size of my office probably. It was always
something I liked doing and I built some cool
cars for some people. But as we grew into what it
is today, I had no idea it would grow this big and
that I wouldnt be able to work on cars. I think
thats the biggest letdown.

CL: Do you remember what the irst car you

customised was?
RF: Yep, it was a 1987 Mazda B2000 pickup truck
it was my irst car and the irst I customised.

CL: What is your average timeframe for

completing a vehicle?
RF: Anywhere from say four weeks to two to four
months just depending on the size of the build.

CL: What is your all-time favourite car that

youve customised?
RF: My favourite car probably my 1950 Merc
you saw down there. Its probably my favourite
all-time and my dream vehicle. Its one of those
things Ive always wanted since I was a kid. I
igured I got to build myself a Merc, so I built it

CL: Are you currently ilming for TV?

RF: Yeah, were currently on Episode 4 of
Season 3 of our show West Coast Customs on
Fox Sports. It will air here in the US and then
well send it overseas. But overseas is usually like
six to eight months behind schedule depending
on the country.

62

Australian Incar Entertainment #03_2016

2006 PORSCHE 991 TURBO S CONVERTIBLE FEATURE CAR

CL: Whats it like being on television?

RF: In the beginning ilming made me and a
lot of my guys nervous. It was like how to act.
After the irst couple years you start to get used
to it and now its just like the cameras arent
even there, so its pretty natural now and part
of everyday life.
CL: Can you tell me what its like when you had
Pimp My Ride on MTV.
RF: (Laughter) Pimp my ride was a doubleedged sword. It was deinitely great for the brand
and everybody knows who West Coast Customs
is, but on the other side it was really bad for the
core car people that really love cars because it
made it almost like a mockery of what we really
do here at the shop. You know we dont put
microwaves in cars and things like that. It had
its good and bad points you know. It was good
because I learned a lot from it and now Ive

developed my own TV show that is a lot better

but, looking at what it used to be, it deinitely hurt
us at the same time.
CL: What are your favourite car audio brands?
RF: Hmmm, I kind of like all the brands. I
deinitely love JL, Fosgate, Alpine. I think
everything out there has got its own purpose
like JL stuf we will put up in certain cars and
put Alpine stuf in other cars. But a little bit of
everything anything thats new really. Whatever
is new that is hot. Every year it seems like things
just get better and smaller. Amps use to be huge
now they are like this big [he gestures] and like
thats a ive channel amp.
CL: Do you like car audio gear in your car?
RF: Who doesnt like car audio gear in their car?
I love it and in my irst car I got a ticket for having
the music up too loud. I remember that to this

day. Nowadays kids dont have the crazy stereo

systems we used to but its deinitely part of my
life. I think not having the right audio gear some
stock stuf really does sound good but, you know,
it just needs a little push. Its what we do every
day here; youve got to hear your music right.

ALPINE
CDE-196DAB
SINGLE-DIN HEAD UNIT

AUDITION
REVIEWER MARTY PRICE

UNCOMPLICATED INGENUITY.
Confucius once proclaimed that
life is really simple, but we insist on
making it complicated. Ive found the same
can be applied to car audio, especially where
receivers are concerned. Many manufactures
are nowadays attempting to cram so much
functionality into receivers that most tend to
become mired in the aforesaid abilities; bogged
down to the point of functioning with all the
speed of the local council.
Seldom do any emerge exactly covered
in glory, and this phenomenon only grows
more relevant pertaining to single-DIN chassis;
whereby real estate for chip sets is an
extremely sparse commodity. Pretty soon the
wisdom of age becomes a mitigating factor,
thus highlighted beautifully here in the new
CDE-196DAB receiver from Alpine.

EXPERT FUNCTIONS
Experience has taught this Japanese behemoth
not only what to include but also what to
omit; in order that it may produce a singleDIN receiver which successfully marries
appropriate functionality with logical simplicity.
The unmentioned benefit of keeping things
simple of course is cost and to that end the
CDE-196DAB tips the till at a measly $399.
Now Im aware that $399 is far from pocket
change, however before you write in chastising
me allow me to paint some context around
my comment. The CDE-196DAB is a single-DIN

64

receiver thats equipped with many ancillary

features including significant ones such as
Bluetooth and DAB tuning. Couple this with a
serious convertor chip and an advanced digital
sound processor and youre onto a sure-fire
winner. However, where these comment gain
credence is that 20 years ago youd have paid
two kilo-bucks for such a receiver. Even as
recently as this decade youd still be leaning
dangerously close to four figure territory. So
when one considers what functionality Alpine
has jammed into this new receiver versus
its price tag, then youll find my comments
somewhat justified.
Ive touched on the actual abilities so lets
expand upon them. Starting with the disc
mechanism; Alpine has integrated its latest
transport and laser pickup, which are seated
upon a robust suspension that eradicates
skipping. Software wise, it handles all those
commonly requested primary flavours
including MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC. Digital
input is not limited to disc though; on the front
is a full-speed version 2.0 USB input which is
able to interface with most common storage
devices provided theyre formatted within the
standard FAT 12/16/32 protocols.
This also doubles to interface with a literal
page-full of smart devices, although older
30-pin iDevices may require the KCU-445i
adaptor cable. Whether its Android or iDevice
though, this connection goes beyond simple

Australian Incar Entertainment #03_2016

audio and charging by allowing you a more

seamless operation which includes such
functionality as searching by various criteria
directly from the head unit. Also included on
board is Alpines TuneIt functionality which
allows you to receive Facebook notifications
via text-to-speech and in doing so provides a
safer driving environment.
The radio tuner is quite adept, not only
spanning the FM, AM and LW bands with 18, six
and six presets respectively; but also reaching
into the digital realm and offering six presets
on each of the three DAB bands. If youre still
a fan of the old school analogue input dont
despair Alpine has opted to retain the 3.5mm
input jack as well. Last but not least, theres a
version 2.1+EDR Bluetooth chipset on-board,
which not only handles all your telephonic
duties, including your contacts, but also
relays information and diligently streams all
forms of entertainment to the receiver. As is
commonplace these days the unit also comes
equipped with both steering wheel remote
input and external microphone input.
With inputs covered lets now turn our
attention to the outputs. First and foremost
this can be undertaken via the units 2-volts
front, rear and subwoofer RCA pre-outs.
However if you opt to run your system without
an external amplifier Alpine has included its
revised internal MOSFET amplifier providing 22
watts continuously or just over 50 maximum,

and when I say maximum its not euphemism

for about to haemorrhage. No, the internal
amplifier is quite comfortable outputting its full
claimed power figure and, in conjunction with
an impressive total harmonic distortion and
signal-to-noise ratio, it makes for a very clear
and most powerful sound.

highlights, all buttons are backlit in Alpines
traditional frosted blue although the colour
can be programmed throughout the full RGB
spectrum, or around 152,561 colours. Ergo
you can fine tune its appearance to perfectly
match your dash lighting. Portside are the
primary control buttons and rotary commander
knob, while on the starboard resides the USB
and analogue jack. The top portion is home to
the disc slot, the bottom sees the numerous
preset knobs and immediately adjacent
between the two is the screen, which is a
segmented single line LCD display and able to
handle multiple languages.
The unit comes with supplementary
extras aplenty including a colour coded and
labelled loom with ISO plugs, a manual in
both hardcopy and softcopy formats, an
IR remote control, and of course the KAE242DA-R digital antenna. These will ensure
that the installation process is hassle free.
Nevertheless one small snippet of sage advice
I will impart is this: please make full use of that
processor. Contrary to popular belief the laws
of physics dont care how much you spend on
your components. Getting good sound is far

CONCLUSION
It may be fair to state that those from
generation Y and younger may struggle to
appreciate the sheer level of achievement
Alpine has demonstrated in the CDE-196DAB.
Those older however are all too aware of just
what a magnificent piece of audio ingenuity
like this would have cost back in the good old
days. Terrific value and performance.

Before exportation of your information takes

place youll likely want to manipulate it. To
assist you with this Alpine has provided quite
an in-depth processing suite. Starting with a
superb 24-Bit DAC and simple controls such as
fader and balance, the options soon broaden
to become more intricate. The equaliser offers
numerous pre-set linearity curves in addition
to programing your own, and when opting for
the latter youre presented with nine bands of
parametric influence.
The frequency centres can be altered and
overlap by an octave, their logarithm widths
can be switched between 3.0/4.0/5.0 and
levels can be boosted or attenuated by 7dB.
Talking crossovers; the system can operate
in either two or three way mode and, aside
from offering adjustable crossover points
between 20Hz and 20kHz, it also allows you
to choose between first through fourth order
slopes with an attenuation ability of down to
-12dB. Within the subwoofer section resides a
0 to 15dB boost and 0 or 180 phase switch
and all channels feature digital time alignment.
These fundamental tuning elements may not
mean a great deal to the layman, nonetheless
in the hands of an experienced tuner or
an enthusiasts these spheres will make an
extraordinary difference to the ensuing sound.
It doesnt end there though; theres also the
Media Expander. This clever piece of electronic
wizardry basically restores sound quality lost
when music undergoes compression. Alpine
claims you simply touch the button and your
music will instantly sound more alive, rich
and natural. Now, truth be told, its not quite
the silver bullet proclaimed, however, Media
Expander is a neat little feature well worth
employing, and is a credit to the technical
prowess of Alpines engineering team.
Physically speaking the CDE-196DAB is
quite the winsome unit, and although my
bias may be showing through a little you
have to concur Alpine seldom produces a

more about tuning and far less about simply

spending. So do yourself a favour and get
acquainted with a real time analyser, lest thisll
quickly develop into an exercise in futility.
With the test article setup I did just
that; spending the better part of an hour
experimenting with various crossover settings
before moving to my real time analyser and
employing the parametric abilities within the
equaliser to get the car as close to a FletcherMunson curve as possible. Once completed I
got stuck into the auditioning, starting out by
playing a zero noise track and smashing that
volume to check for hiss. The CDE-196DAB is a
fairly quiet unit, with an output mostly devoid
of any external hiss and noise, so with that test
passed I moved to music.
Starting out with the radio its quite clear
on both FM and AM with only a little in the way
of additional artefacts; however making the
jump to DAB quickly reveals the inferior quality
radio weve come to accept as the norm
hitherto. Not any more; the DAB plays with
exceptional clarity and accuracy, as is equally
the case when playing any other forms of
digital media too, be it from disc or USB stick.
The output is very linear too, presenting little
in the way of artificial boosting at either end
of the spectrum. Even the phone integration is
seamless with the iPhone 5 working flawlessly,
for once, through everything from telephony to
audio streaming.

REVIEWER STEPHEN DAWSON

FIRST OF ITS KIND.

It is clear that increasingly the design
motivation for motor vehicle head
units has been to provide devices that do all
things for all people. Music, yes! Of course! But
video too, both for entertainment and practical
purposes (eg. for use with a reversing camera).
Navigation to get you where you want to go,
and hands-free telephone calls. Sony, of course,
does that with the best of them. However with
the RSX-GS9 it has gone back to the roots of
car stereo, delivering a device designed only
for pure, high fidelity audio.

HI, HIGH-RES
Actually, not just high fidelity, but high
resolution. That is, this unit supports such
formats as ALAC (Apple Lossless) and FLAC,
plus uncompressed (Mac friendly) AIFF
and (Windows friendly) WAV. It can handle
resolutions up to 24-bits and 192kHz. Plus
Sonys own Direct Stream Digital format. It can
play the standard version of this, with 2.8MHz
sampling from USB, and both that and the
double rate 5.6MHz version when in USB DAC
mode. Of course it also plays MP3, WMA and
AAC, so your not-so-high resolution audio is
fully covered. USB DAC? Yes indeed. We will
return to that.
Why high res? Will you get any real
advantage out of that in a car? Likely, but if you
want to, youll need to get some high resolution
super tweeters. And indeed a suitable amp,

66

because the RSX-GS9 really is a source device

and sound processor only, not an amplifier.
Sony provided the high powered XM-GS4 four
channel bridgeable power amplifier ($499)
and a pair of XS-GS1 super tweeters ($399)
capable of delivering over 40,000 Hertz to
assist with the review. But even if one doubts
the sonic advantages, its damned convenient
because it means that you can play the exact
same files that you have in your high-fidelity
system at home in your car, without having to
convert to MP3. But lets get into the details.
The RSX-GS9 is a standard DIN-sized head
unit (sans amps, as mentioned). But it looks
nothing like any head unit youve (or weve)
seen. Instead, once installed it looks like a very
classy piece of high fidelity equipment. To the
left theres a simple, single-line alphanumeric
display with four small keys underneath. To the
right is a 3.5mm auxiliary input, a USB socket
and a Micro-B USB socket. In the middle is a
large rotary volume control knob with a nicelylit ring around its base. There are further inputs
around the back: another USB (supplied with
extension lead) and on the main loom two
speaker level inputs for feeding in the output
of an existing car stereo. Theres also Bluetooth
support, for audio playback, for control and
for hands-free phone operation. For the latter
purpose a microphone is supplied.
For Bluetooth music playback the standard
SBC codec is supported, along with AAC (good

Australian Incar Entertainment #03_2016

news for those who use Apple devices)

and LDAC, Sonys own high bitrate codec.
That last should make for improved Bluetooth
sound for those with compatible Sony Android
phones. Those Android phones supporting
AptX such as my own Samsung Galaxy
S6 will have to make do with the lesser SBC
codec. Or connect using the Micro-B USB
socket. It is this which provides access to the
USB DAC function. You can, in fact, use this
with a Mac or Windows computer, but its main
use is with Android phones.
The two regular USB sockets support a
direct digital feed from iPods and iOS devices
in addition to flash memory. The Micro-B USB
socket supports a direct digital feed from
Android phones. But only Android phones that
support On-The-Go (OTG) connections. If youre
unlikely to change phones soon and youre
uncertain, Id suggest checking compatibility at
your local Sony car audio retailer.
Finally, the unit has an FM tuner, but not
AM nor DAB+, so your broadcast listening
options are limited unless you leave your old
car stereo installed, running through this units
auxiliary input.

DETAILS, YET MORE

DETAILS
The Sony RSX-GS9 is not just a source device,
though. Its a proper car audio front end,
needing only plain power amps to complete it.

install Sonys SongPal app on my phone. That

done, once connected via Bluetooth (a simple
NFC tap on the units volume control did the
trick) the app started up and allowed me to
select inputs and, more importantly, adjust all
the units settings via a graphical interface. This
proved to be far more convenient. The app is
available for both Android and iOS.

PERFORMANCE
I listened to a lot of music using the Sony RSXGS9. Some radio, but mostly a mixture of MP3
and AAC content via Bluetooth from my phone
and an iPad, and even more uncompressed
and high resolution audio from USB flash
memory and phone. And I must say, if theres
a difference between a high-end, high-fidelity,
high resolution, home audio player and the
Sony RSX-GS9, it was far from obvious. I
know because I did a lot of listening using the
system as a source for my high fidelity system.
Smooth sound, superb imaging, utter digital
silence where appropriate: the RSX-GS9 simply
delivered the sound as held in the files with
total transparency. I loved it.
Just as importantly, it must be mentioned
how smoothly it all went. The unit played all
the audio without a single hiccups, even the
5.6MHz DSD in DoP format from the phone
(the unit correctly reported the sampling
frequency). Thats a lot of data being fed in, and
it just plain worked.
But there was one more thing I figured
ought to be done. Look, you cant toss
out words like High Resolution without
expecting those of us possessed of a sceptical
temperament to check things out. Many
people seem to believe that they can pick by
ear whether a signal is high resolution or not.
I dont have that much confidence in myself.
So I measured it. Theres good reason to. Lets
assume that the unit is perfectly designed and
can deliver true high resolution audio from USB
media. Well, how about from a phone? Even
using an OTG connection, the phone hardware
itself could act as a digital bottleneck, limiting
the output to mere standard resolution. So I
checked the performance of the unit using a
24-bit, 192kHz test signal, fed both from USB
and from the Samsung Galaxy S6 via an OTG
connection. The news was nothing but good.
Extremely good in fact.
The performance was identical to two
decimal points either way. The frequency

response extended all the way out

beyond 56kHz at -3dB and 70kHz at
-6dB. Thats the kind of performance
you expect from a high-end, high
performance home DAC. The noise
performance was very nearly as
good: -107.6dB A-weighted. This
unit adds absolutely no audible
noise to the signal. The total
harmonic distortion measured
at an insignificant 0.0013%. The
intermodulation distortion at
0.0032%. If youre not an avid
high-fidelity magazine reader and these figures
mean nothing to you, just be assured that if
they were to somehow be improved upon,
no-one on the face of the earth could tell
the difference.
As for DSD, the performance was pretty
much the same. The noise floor was just one
decibel higher. The -3dB frequency response
point was at 50kHz in accordance with the
recommended anti-aliasing specifications for
DSD, and -6dB was at 62kHz. High resolution
PCM or DSD, youre going to get the same
effective performance, barring only the
differences in signal processing, and then only
if youre keeping your DSD pure.
Do note: the phone measurements will
only reach this high standard if your Android
phone delivers the sound in full. It is almost
impossible to be certain without testing the
phone, or finding a reputable publication
that has tested it.

CONCLUSION
Clearly the Sony RSX-GS9 is not the head unit
for everyone. But for those who want the
highest quality music available in a vehicle, it
must be sitting at the top of the want list!.

So it has six RCA outputs: two front,

two rear and two subwoofer. There
is a full set of setup features, such as
a 10-band graphic equaliser (with a
bunch of presets in addition to your
own custom settings); such as a lowpass filter for the subwoofer outputs
(which can be set to mono) with eight
frequencies from 50 to 250Hz and an
adjustable filter slope
(12 to 48dB per octave); such as a
high-pass filter for the main speakers
with similar settings; and such as a
time alignment facility. Theres enough
there to thoroughly tune the sound for your
position in your car. Except, perhaps, for when
youre listening to DSD music. This lacks the
full setup for the subwoofer, providing only the
option of adding a 150Hz low-pass filter for the
subwoofer output.
Now this makes sense. Direct Stream Digital
is not an easy format to process digitally.
Indeed, studios which use it convert to an
extremely high resolution PCM format DXD
if they do need to do any digital processing,
and then convert back afterwards. So the
range of digital filters offered for the PCMbased formats (FLAC, ALAC, MP3, etc) cant
be applied to DSD if it is kept pure (ie. not
converted to PCM). That means that a simple
analogue crossover filter is the only option. But
what was puzzling was that when I was playing
DSD music from USB, it was clear that all the
digital processing was working just fine. I could
adjust the EQ, or change the time alignment,
and the sound would change accordingly. A
close examination of the manual revealed what
was going on. If you feed in DSD by means
of USB storage into one of the standard USB
inputs, then it is actually converted to PCM
(probably with 176.4kHz sampling), so all the
usual processing can be applied. However, if
you feed in the DSD via the Micro-B USB socket
(ie. the USB DAC input), then it is kept in pure
DSD format up until it is converted to analogue.
So for pure DSD you will need a Mac or
Windows computer or an Android phone which
is capable of providing audio over an OTG
connection. With all three you will also require
player software capable of delivering DSD
over PCM (DoP) in which the DSD is disguised
to look like PCM, but which is recognised
appropriately by the DAC. I used USB Audio
Player Pro software on both the phone and
a tablet. This sidesteps Androids normal
functions to deliver digital audio in the original
format, or DoP for DSD.
Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy S6 phone
could also deliver full 24-bit, 192kHz PCM even
using its standard music player. Incidentally,
you can use the display key on the small
remote control to cycle through display modes,
one of which shows the input audio format so
that you know exactly what youre getting.
Making all the settings could be a slow
and tedious process when working via a one
line text display. The easier thing to do was to

TRANSCENDENCE PERSONIFIED.
Each month bears witness to
products aplenty shuffling through our
offices door, many of which are receivers. This
precipitates auditions, which ultimately begets
reviews. As one would imagine, the question is
often posed as to what makes a good receiver.
A fairly logical question, though the answer is
not always met with immediate agreeance
because having every feature in the world is
not always conducive to a receiver being good.
The sad reality for all technical devices
worldwide is that the more functionality you
have on-board the more memory it consumes,
and you mayve gleaned that the physical
chassis dimensions of your standard doubleDIN receiver arent growing anytime soon.
This means that the chipsets for all that
stuff must fit within these physical
confines, and this is where the technological
powerhouses that lack street smarts start
to extricate themselves. Making a deck with
a feature list MacGyver would be proud of
is one thing. However, getting it to perform
with speed faster than that of a wet weekend
is another thing altogether.

68

A QUESTION OF BALANCE
My point is it takes a savvy designer to
produce an award winning deck capable of
offering all the functionality you need, omitting
that which you dont and all with a reaction
speed acceptable in this day and age. Believe
me when I say many manufacturers struggle
considerably with this delicate balancing act;
either packing too much in and adversely
affecting operational speed, or leaving too
much out and making the deck inherently
impotent. This is where Swiss manufacturer
Zenec is exemplary. Despite it boasting a
tender young age just shy of a decade, its
nowadays widely considered as one of the
best contemporary receiver designers. The
new Z-N626 is the latest exhibit of this
technical prowess.
With development commencing three years
prior, the team behind the Z-N626 has done
a wonderful job, packing in an abundance of
features while at the same time possessing
the wisdom to exclude redundant functionality
in order that it may operate with haste. Its

As a platform it epitomises significant
technological developments pertaining to
both hardware and software. Information
importation can be undertaken via various

DVD, with both PAL and NTSC supported.
Software-wise all the standard file types are
supported including MP3, WMA, AVI, Xvid and
FLAC, most of which will likely be imported
via two version 2.0 USB ports, one located
on the rear and one on the front. If you find
you require more you can also plumb in
a USB hub. File structure supported is the
standard FAT32 protocol, and the unit includes
a database-driven search function meaning
digital media can be stored and recalled via a

a powerful new tuner chipset which not only
includes AM and FM but also DAB. In what
can only be described as intelligent design,
stations from any of these bands can be saved
within the 18 pre-set positions. The days of
segregated bands are finally behind us. You
can opt for the tuner to update dynamically
whereby itll actively prioritise the station list
by signal strength as you drive between capital
cities. Intrinsically, it features a selection of
audio visual inputs ranging from composite
through to analogue 3.5mm jack and to top
it off theres both steering wheel control
input and a rear camera input that includes
adjustable grid lines and audio support.
On-board Bluetooth comes equipped with
the latest FC6000TS Parrot board. The software
allows for synchronisation with up to three
phones collectively, and it can actually interface
with two at once. Whether youre streaming
information or requesting it handle your rotund
telephonic requirements, the Z-N626 has you
covered. It allows for each phone to present up
to one thousand contacts with five numbers
per contact, and the software includes digital
processing for noise masking, whether you
choose to converse via its internal microphone
or plumb in an external one.
With your information input, youll now
want to process it. Not surprisingly Zenec
doesnt just settle for simple treble, bass and

second order slope. The subwoofer channel
has the ability to be low-passed at the same
frequencies however is switchable between
second or fourth order slopes and with a
phase of either 0- or 180-degrees. Furthermore,
theres also time alignment thus allowing for
front, rear and subwoofer to be independently
delayed out up to 8.9ms or 305cm, depending
on which unit you prefer. Lastly theres a
parametric 11-band equaliser, vastly advanced
over previous offerings in that you can not only
change the frequency centres but now also
alter the logarithm widths too, with a boost of
+2dB down to an attenuation of -14dB. If youre
not up with all this technical jargon, Zenec also
provides numerous pre-set curves, you just
select the shape of your car and the Z-N626
adjusts the sound to suit.

TRAVEL WIDELY
Exporting your information can be
accomplished via a myriad of methods, starting
with 3-volts front, rear, subwoofer and centre
pre-outs, the latter being employed when
the system is set to output 5.1 surround
sound. Staying with the low voltage outputs,
therere also numerous composite audio visual
outputs and the deck has a special multi-zone
function to cater specifically for rear passenger
entertainment. If you opt to use the internal
4-channel MOSFET amplifier its quite potent,
outputting 23 watts continuous or just over
50 per channel maximum with an exceptional
total harmonic distortion figure.
Argue though you may as to its other
abilities, its hard to refute the supremacy
of the navigation suite Zenec incorporates.
It features the latest iGO Primo NextGen
Australian & New Zealand mapping software
and this includes an extensive point of interest
database featuring over 750000 items. Also
included in this software is a subsidiary POI
database from Camps Australia Wide that
provides a list of over 3900 low-cost or free
camp sites. Other primary navigation abilities
include two- and three-dimensional highresolution maps, tunnel mode, text-to-speech
ability and a feature called enhanced junction
view that displays a lifelike image of the
upcoming intersection literally showing you
where to go. What sets the Z-N626 apart from
many of its peers however, is that for a small
fee you can include Hema 4x4 topographic
off-road mapping. Now if your idea of going
off-road is mounting a gutter then this probably
wont appeal to you. However, if youre one
who likes to really get away from it all then

Australian Incar Entertainment #03_2016

Hema mapping is a godsend, offering superbly

detailed touring maps for literally hundreds
of thousands of kilometres of both iconic and
lesser-known outback roads and tracks. Just to
sweeten the deal the unit comes with a years
worth of complimentary map updates.
Visually-speaking Zenec has never been
exceedingly audacious, nonetheless, the
Z-N626 does look most professional. Sporting
a matt black face that encapsulates a 6.2-inch
thin film transistor display with a resolution
of 800 x 480 which, combined with the super
bright LED backlighting and the software
antialiasing, provides a superbly sharp and
detailed image. The control buttons and
commander knob adorn the left hand side
and feature white key illumination, while the
disc slot and analogue jack are at the top.
Altogether these provide for an appearance
thats actually difficult to distinguish from
a factory one. Zenec includes plenty of
paraphernalia ranging from looms, IR remotes,
interconnects, multiple instruction booklets,
external microphone, USB extension cable
and face surround. Installation proved to be a
cinch, and I strongly recommend you spend
considerable time setting the processor up. As
aforesaid, the Z-N626 features quite a powerful
DSP; youd be remiss not to make full use of its
considerable potential.
Progressing further into my auditioning
odyssey revealed the Z-N626 to be quite a user
friendly unit. It offers various little shortcuts
for quicker navigation and you can customise
which icons appear on the front page, actually
binning the ones you dont use. Sound-wise
I began with the internal amplifier, giving it a
fairly serious workout which still resulted in a
fairly quiet unit, without hiss until the higher
volumes are reached, thanks to the 106dB
signal-to-noise ratio. Naturally the lower voltage
pre-outs are far quieter, with the units output
remaining devoid of external noise; period.
As a matter of fact, the output as a whole
is breathtakingly clean, and as I drove around
I began to appreciate just how meticulous
the aural output of the Z-N626 actually is. Its
sound quality is such that it reveals those
little idiosyncratic details you seldom hear
nowadays, with the tiniest little nuances being
reproduced with stunning clarity. Visually
the deck is splendid, providing a crystal
clear image and this segues nicely into the
navigation suite. Despite its enormousness its
not difficult to master, and youll soon have it
happily telling you where to go.

CONCLUSION
Truth be told, I was a little taken aback by the
Z-N626. Not because Zenec has developed a
super impressive new receiver, but because its
never produced a bad one. And looking at the
$1499 price tag I was somewhat unprepared
for how competently the unit performed as an
overall package. From its in-depth navigation
suite, through to its absolutely superb sound
quality, its just an extraordinary combination.

4 ON THE FLOOR PLUS NEUTRAL.

As this reviewer has noted in
the past, db Drive products have
developed an enviable reputation worldwide.
Their marketing claims of Fidelity, Accuracy
and Purity and The Return to Sound
are more than just the usual hype. This
organisation seems to have a genuine interest
in making sure their products actually meet
the markets expectations, and in some cases
exceed them by a fair margin.
Not just in terms of sound quality and
output, but also in the less noticeable (but
equally important) areas of build quality
including the internal, less visible build
quality. Ease of installation, logic of wiring
layout and access to controls have all been
considered, making their products some
of the most popular among the installers
weve spoken with.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The NEO range of amplifiers are great
examples of this philosophy. Theyre not
massive, heat-emitting blocks of solid audio
muscle. But neither are they flea-powered,

72

speaker dependant shrinking violets. The

NEO1.5 is a 750 watts into 1-ohm monobloc,
while the subject of this review, the NEO4,
is a 4 channel, 250 watts into 2-ohms stereo
power amplifier.
Its a relatively compact unit, the NEO4,
about the size of a large paperback book
at 175 x 135 x 48mm and weighing in at
approximately 1.2Kg. So installation choices
are going to be varied. It has an on-board
temperature controlled cooling fan thats
almost totally silent in operation.
One end of the aluminium enclosure has
the power and trigger input terminals, plus
the speaker wiring block. The opposite end
sports the line inputs and the controls, of
which there are plenty.
Starting at the right, next to the four line
level inputs, one for each channel, we see a
Level Control of each pair of channels. So
one control for channels 1 and 3, the other
control for channels 2 and 4. The remaining
adjustments are configured in the same way
each one controls two channels of output. Next
to the Level Controls, we have the High-Pass/

Australian Incar Entertainment #0

#03_2016

Low-Pass adjustment. This runs from 55Hz to

750 Hz, so plenty of range there.
Then, there is the three position crossover
switch, which has Low-Pass, High-Pass and
Full positions and works in conjunction with
the High-Pass/Low-Pass adjustment. Lastly,
theres the Bass EQ 0-12dB adjustment. These
controls are all clearly marked, smooth in
operation and are as accurate and linear in
their function as their size allows. Remember,
were talking about a fascia thats only 48mm
high, so things are tight. All in all, its all well
laid out, logical and legible.
At the other end with the speaker wiring
block, is a nice touch. The plug is removable
and secured with two small screws, almost
like an old R232 Serial Plug (for those of us that
remember that far back). What this means is
that the plug can be removed, wiring added
and tightened down, then the plug can be
fitted and secured via the screws. A neat
and clean connection for an area that often
becomes congested with heavy gauge speaker
wiring, plus stray strands that have a tendency
to cause all sorts of problems.

FIRST GEAR & WERE OFF

AUDITION

Connected into the Nissan Stageas system,

the NEO4 left little doubt of its abilities.
Initially, it was wired in for front speaker
duties only, just to provide a simple stereo
sound and a chance to evaluate its capabilities.
The range of adjustments for crossover and
EQ along with the input level for each channel
were very helpful. This should make the NEO4
a cinch to integrate into any factory system
with a suitable line-out connection.
Placement of the NEO4 didnt present many
problems, given its small size and weight. Once
the settings are locked in, it could be fitted
under almost any dash or seat, or even behind
some kick panels. Speaking of installation,
the specifications mention that this model is
water resistant, meaning its suitable for a
variety of marine installations, if thats your
thing? Apparently, this is achieved by the
special coating of components and boards,
along with the very tight and well-designed
wiring connections mentioned previously.

SHIFTING INTO 2ND GEAR

The NEO4 exhibited a good, honest full range
sound with the crossover switch set on Full.
While not being the last word in absolute
power output, within its capabilities, it has
a clean and transparent character. Channel
separation is good, as are dynamic range and
tonality.
The Nissan Stagea test vehicle now has
a reasonably good set of splits in the front.
Theyre a nominal 8-ohms load and rarely fall
below 6-ohms, making them a relatively easy
load for the NEO4. Distortion was absent until
pushed to the extremes, well beyond normal
listening level. This is not an absolute SPL
product and should not be used as such, but it
has more than sufficient power for normal use.
If theres one attribute that stood out with
the NEO4, it would be the high frequency
performance. This reviewers high frequency
experience with Class-D amplifiers has not

been universally positive. With most, some

high frequency grain, distortion wrongness
is almost always noticeable. Once noticed,
it becomes impossible to ignore and the ear
tends to focus on this first.
In the case of the NEO4, it was refreshingly
absent in all but the highest of frequencies, and
only then when the levels were extremely high.
Well done NEO4 indeed. Manufacturers have
come a long way with the filtering and speed of
the switching systems in Class-D and db Drive
has obviously been paying attention.

3RD & LISTENING CLOSELY

Infinity and Sheffield Labs, The Definitive
Musical and Fidelity Sampler Vol. 1 has long
been a go-to disc for evaluation. Track 1 Till
They Take My Heart Away by Claire Marlo has
the type of vocals that can either soar and
create an emotional wave of enjoyment, or
sound flat and lifeless in the wrong system.
Happily, the NEO4 falls into the first camp
by a mile. Marlos voice comes through as
transparently and clearly as ever. On the same
disc (which is full of great tracks, by the way)
Track 2 Slippin Away II from James Newton
Howard, is full of percussion and abrupt stops
and starts. While in this context the NEO4 was
unable to plumb the depths of bass this track
contains, what it did present was accuracy and
punch in the notes portrayed.
Lastly, Track 4 Roads Less Travelled by
Pat Coil has some simply amazing acoustic
guitar work, along with a very quiet and
black background. Class-D often has some
of the lowest noise floor of the many amplifier
technologies out there and the NEO4 is no
exception. Pauses between arrangements on
this track were completely silent and lead into
the next note with no loss of resolution at all.

4TH & FLAT TO THE FLOOR

Keb Mo is a firm favourite for rhythm and plain
toe-tapping fun. Again, this is an artist thats
easy for a system to get wrong. If you can sit

still through more than one track from the

1994 self-titled album, youre either playing
it way too quietly, or the system wont portray
the dynamic swing this albums capable of!
Track 9 Come On In My Kitchen is a
perfect example. The NEO4 had no issues
with this one at all and had all listeners
twitching away happily in their seats. Track
12 Kind Hearted Woman Blues is another
track thats great to give your system a good
workout. Kevin Roosevelt Moore (you can see
why he went with Keb Mo) has a husky and
deep voice and he lets it fly on this track. If a
system cant portray this convincingly, youll
know immediately. The NEO4 did a great
job, but some tweaking of the level inputs
was necessary as the density of the bass on
this track was just a little too much for the
settings. Tuning it down remedied the problem
immediately. Lastly, the 1987 MFSL IASCA Test
Disc has been in this reviewers collection
since its release nearly 30 years ago. While
used mainly for competition assessment and
judging of in-car systems, its also a lot of fun
to throw at systems that would not normally
be subjected to it. Of course, it contains all
the usual frequency sweep tracks, phasing,
separation and linearity tests one could ever
need. But it also has some great musical
tracks, (including some of the Star Wars
favourites), along with the 12 minute long
Track 25 Night On Bald Mountain by Modest
Mussorgsky. Famously remastered by RimskyKorsakov and used in the Disney Film Fantasia,
playing this on the little NEO4 felt cruel, but
the diminutive amp handled it with aplomb,
although for the first time the tiny cooling fan
on the underside silently kicked into life.

CONCLUSION
Small, neat and capable are the three words
that spring to mind when describing the NEO4.
Build quality is far better than we have any
right to expect at this price point and sound
quality likewise. Within its abilities, this an
outstanding offering from db Drive. I can just
imagine multiples of this little monster tucked
away around a vehicle, each powering its own
pair (or two pairs) of drivers.
With its amphibious grade parts, adjustable
inputs, crossovers and EQ, the NEO4 is a
cleverly designed and executed surprise
package with many possibilities for the installer
and end user. Highly recommended.

SETTING THE NEW STANDARD.

Akin to any industry, the car audio
one also has its distinguished leaders
and followers and while not detracting from
those who dont feel the need to reinvent
the wheel, some manufacturers like to take a
different approach. They buck trends rather
than conform to them, boldly forging innovative
paths ahead.
American manufacturer Phoenix Gold is one
such manufacturer and, despite undergoing
a few reboots over the last three decades,
its garnered somewhat of a reputation for
developing new technologies in order to
produce superior products.

ALL-IN-ONE
Nothing showcases this legacy more succinctly
than the new SX series components, in
particular the SX1200.5 amplifier. Renowned
not so much for absolutely outlandish
abilities but rather as an overall package,
the SX1200.5 is the penultimate culmination
of everything you want in a quality budget
amplifier. Tremendous power and efficiency,
small footprint, impressive performance

76

specs and, most important in this day and

age, a diminutive price tag. A digital switching
Class-D design the SX1200.5 is quintuple in
distribution, offering 125 watts continuously
from its four satellite channels when measured
at 4-ohms. The subwoofer channel meanwhile
outputs 200 watts at 4-ohms. These figures
rise significantly when the channels are loaded
down to 2-ohms, however if this is the route
youre planning, please ensure you have
adequate airflow for cooling.
Just in case youre harbouring any doubts
about its abilities a birth certificate is included,
with my particular specimen measuring 142
watts on each of the satellite channels and 228
on the subwoofer. The total harmonic distortion
remained just under one percent and this is
measured at full tilt, not a fraction of the output
like many manufacturers habitually quote.
The damping factor is over 200, ensuring
controlled cone deceleration while the slew
rate is equally high; thus contributing to
smooth and accurate highs. Signal-to-noise
ratio is over 100dB guaranteeing it plays very
quietly so far as induced hiss and artefacts

go. Just a word on power ratings before we

move on. You may have noticed that the ratio
between the satellite and subwoofer channels
of many a multichannel amplifier is somewhat
diminished nowadays.
For example; gone are the days of say 4 x
25 + 1 x 1500. This is no oversight, its done
because metallurgically speaking component
speakers are far more advanced these days.
They possess a sturdier construction and from
stronger materials. This intrinsically means
bass duties arent left solely to the subwoofer
anymore. Today component speakers in doors
are handling as much as 98 percent of the
sound duties and this dictates manufacturers
must pay close attention to ancillary specs,
apart from just power. Because if your amplifier
has all the power in the world but the control
of a cumquat, youre music is going to sound
like a Bunnings paint shaker regardless.

SEXY SX
Turning to the comeliness of the unit; its an
ultra-clean design which is relieving because
lets face facts, Phoenix Gold has made some

interesting looking amplifiers over time it

must be said. The unit is enshrouded in a solid
cast aluminium case which has been anodised
black. This serves as the primary heat sink and
is mostly clean, with just a single glass black
Perspex strip along the centre breaking up the
shape. Upon this resides the Phoenix Gold logo.
As mentioned above the footprint of the
outer case is quite small, measuring a mere
314mm x 176mm with a height of 50mm,
and that includes the plated terminal blocks.
Speaking of which turning to one end youll
find all of them, from speaker through to
power, earth and remote. In what can only be
described as experience personified, theres
a colour line around each of the 4AWG power
inputs so you can identify them. I can hear
installers Australia-wide nodding as they read
this, for we all know what its like to have the
amplifier installed, only to find you cannot
see which terminal is which because the
microscopic writing is hidden beneath the
terminal block.
Weight-wise shes just shy of three
kilograms. Upon the opposite end are the three
plated RCA inputs able to handle up to 8-volts,
in addition to the controls. These include the
mandatory gain for each channel pairing, plus
a second order high-pass crossover for all four
satellite channels settable at 15Hz to 250Hz.
The subwoofer channel has a second order
15Hz to 250Hz low-pass crossover, 0dB to
18dB bass boost ability centred at 45Hz, and
also an input shunt switch allowing its signal
to be obtained from the front channels. This is
especially important if youre running an OEM
source unit without a separate subwoofer
output. Adjacent to these is a remote input
port and a remote bass knob and cable are
included in the box.
Cracking open the amplifier for an eyeball
is most rewarding. Phoenix Gold has gained
somewhat of a reputation for being a master
of amplifier design and the SX1200.5 doesnt

disappoint. Now to be fair youre not going

to find an array of 50 200v power capacitors
shes no titanic monoblock. Its more the
cleanliness and wisdom behind the topology
that impresses. Its one very smartly designed
affair and is packed full of quality components.
The layout sees the power input stage, power
storage area, step up transformers and FETs
all kept well away from any signal handling,
while at the same time being placed in
thermally efficient locations. This is especially
important because not only does the SX1200.5
not have a fan due to size restrictions, it also
has limited cooling vents. This dictates that
most heat dissipation will be through radiation
via the outer case. In such a scenario one
cannot just colloquially chuck everything in; a
fair bit of thought has gone into the placement
of the components.
This starts with the stiffening in the form
of a sextuple throng of 25V/2200uf caps. From
there the power is pushed through multiple
air-core transformers before being upped and
placed in storage courtesy of four 50V/3300uf
R.M. power capacitors, ready for expulsion via
dual lines of output transistors. Signal tracks
transferring this power are quite robust and
standing raised about the main PCB at the
opposite end is the signal related circuitry.
Installing the SX1200.5 is straightforward
due to its small design and terminal layout,
and its hard to go wrong when everything
is so clearly labelled. Phoenix Gold does
include some tools and mounting hardware,
in addition to a paper instruction manual and
aforesaid certificate.
Commencing as always at my test-bench,
the first assault was with the old zero-noise
track. The resulting outcome being that it
output a great deal of nothing; almost literally.
Its a very quiet amplifier and despite having
plenty of power on tap, a characteristic
which usually lends itself to excessive hiss,
the SX1200.5 remains
mostly silent up
until the gains
reach over
90 percent.
So theres
the first
big tick.

Australian Incar Entertainment #03_2016

How would it perform, however, given the

power it outputs, not so much on the satellite
channels as theyre quite healthy, but that
comparatively modest subwoofer channel?
Well naturally the front channels are superb in
that theyre powerful and very clean, emitting
very little audible distortion at all, even when
pushed hard.
What is a pleasant surprise is the
subwoofer channel. Although it doesnt boast
astronomical power figures its robust, and this
is where intelligent system design comes into
play, because if youre attempting to marry
the SX1200.5 up to a wall of ELITE.212D4s
then prepare for a face-palm. However, if you
organise a subwoofer with a good efficiency
and light motor structure the results are
stunning. Something along the lines of, oh,
the SX range of subwoofers perhaps? Itll
easily run a couple of those babies with
aplomb, outputting controlled, deep and
articulated bass notes with accuracy thats
nothing short of startling.
Of course, theres a point where itll struggle
but this is a stark reality for every amplifier.
So if youre a sound quality nut who likes to
occasionally smash yourself then the SX1200.5
is easily able to exert more output than your
ears will be happy dealing with.

CONCLUSION
So overall, whats the verdict? Well, there
was no doubt that Phoenix Gold is capable
of producing a good amplifier. Theres an
ELITE.5 here which Ill argue is one of the
best amplifiers in the world. The winning
element for you as a consumer is that much
of the lessons garnered from these flagship
amplifiers, be it electrical or technical through
to metallurgical, have been implemented into
follow-up sibling ranges.
That means that in the SX1200.5 you get
award winning technology and design in
conjunction with
oodles of power
and control, in
a comparatively
small size
and with an
even smaller
price tag.

BETTER BASS BREEDS A

BRILLIANT BALANCE.
Fusion products have been in the
Australian marketplace for some years
now and along the way have developed an
enviable reputation for both performance and
in particular, exceptional value.
The Fusion EN-AB1102 10-inch Active
Wedge Subwoofer continues the tradition.
Sporting a Composite cone 10-inch Encounter
driver (although the actual cone area measures
9-inches) with one of the stiffest and thickest
rubber surrounds Ive seen, its powered by a
750 watts Class-A/B amplifier. Front ported, this
sub is housed in a Trapezium Enclosure (angled
panels prevent internal standing waves),
measuring 347 x 334 x 472 mm. Its covered
in black felt and weighs in at more than 10kg.
Features include gain and level controls on
the rear, a wired remote (included) and a
substantial and heavy duty wiring kit.
The front of the driver itself is well
protected, as described by Fusion The Twin
Bar Bass Deflector not only protects the
Encounter cone but also circulates maximum

bass throughout the vehicle. All cabling

and accessories are provided within the box
making for easy installation.

BREAK-IN ALREADY!
Out of the box, the EN-AB1102 is slow, dull
and non-responsive. Even after checking the
wiring, controls and mounting in the back of
the review Nissan Stagea station wagon, the
bass was woolly and undefined. Not at all as
expected. However, after a bit of thought, it
was removed and set up on the bench again.
A break-in CD was played at reasonable
volume for approximately 24 hours, making
sure the cone showed good excursion, but
without distortion. The difference upon
re-installation in the vehicle was immediately
apparent. Things had actually tightened up
considerably and there was now a full range
of bass to be had, all the way from the
claimed 10Hz up to the 200Hz crossover
point. So, now we know break-in is particularly
important with this unit.

For those of us not into competitive soundoffs, less is often more when it comes to bass
reinforcement. How many times have you
listened to a system that, initially at least, is
very impressive? And then, only to find as
time goes on, that what at first appeared to be
impressive came at the expense of a deficiency
in other areas? This is a common trick used by
some manufacturers. The (untrained) human
ear can be quite easily tricked by emphasis
in one or more areas of the audible spectrum
in order to make the system sound more
accurate, dynamic or warm. This usually
means another part of the sound has been
suppressed to make the first area seem more
noticeable. The point of this is to demonstrate
just how important well integrated bass (and
sub-bass) can be in your system. Its almost
impossible not to think that if some bass is
good, well, then more must be better! Not
necessarily so. Integration is the key here.
There are a lot of tricks that can be applied
here to get the bass spot on. These include

disabling the main speakers to check the

subs output alone.
This was done once the Fusion ENAB1102 active subwoofer was wired up to
the main system in the test vehicle. Now, as a
station wagon was being used, the bass was
naturally dialled back a little, to account for
the reinforcement coming from the larger rear
area. However, in a boot-mounted situation
the EN-AB1102 has more than enough output
to allow for tuning from this area. In addition,
the supplied remote control lead is easily
long enough to be mounted on the dash (and
eventually in the glove box if stealth is desired),
allowing the subs volume to be adjusted to
your music choice.

EARTH TO EARTH
The EN-AB1102 active subwoofer has one
noticeable requirement during installation.
That being, that it is amazingly sensitive to
earthing. Not just a clean earth, as is normal in
most installations, but a common earth with
the vehicles main audio system. Nothing else
will do, or so it seems. Failure to observe this
resulted in loud humming from the sub, even
when the body earth used was measured
and showed no measurable voltage drop.
Connection to the same earth as the audio
system or head unit eliminated the hum
completely. This may well have been the
individual review unit tested, but its worth
noting. This reviewers highly non-technical
and totally subjective assessment of the bass
output of the AB1102 was very favourable. A
pleasurable kick in the pants was noticeable
exactly when it should have been. And not
when it shouldnt have been. This leads to
one of the problems with overblown or poorly
tuned bass. Excessive bass tends to intrude
on areas of the music where its not welcome,
adding a low level buzz or weight to the sound
that smears and confuses.

While it may be impressive from the outside

hey, no problems if thats your thing, the Fusion

into some heavy duty bass notes. These notes
were often separate from the vocals and
allowed an accurate assessment of just how
well the lower notes were being handled. Very
nicely, as it turned out. Deep bass notes like
these can often get lost and without knowing
theyre meant to be there are easily missed.

CONCLUSION
For the price, (at a surprising $240!), I suspect
the Fusion EN-AB1102 active subwoofer
would be almost impossible to beat. Its well
constructed and with enough tune-ability to
satisfy most installations while integrating well.
Its not overly large, but neither is it so small
as to limit output. Add to this the very handy
remote control and it becomes an excellent
solution for bass reinforcement, in factory
systems as well as custom installations.
Are there better subs to be had? Of course,
but it would be a struggle to find them in this
price bracket. Quite frankly, its amazing that
Fusion can build it, and sell it, for the price
