Cells- are the basic structure units that make up all living things or organisms

Organisms- made up of one or more cells and carries out all of its own
activities for life.
Work of Cell
breaking down food, making proteins and getting rid of waste
also perform life function such as growth
distribute nutrients in the body
Two Main Kind of Cells
DNA- carries all of the instructions that a cell needs to live
1. Prokaryotic cell- has a single circular DNA molecule
prokaryote
2. Eukaryotic cell- has apart called a nucleus which contain the activity of the cell
Eukaryote- organism made of one or more eukaryotic cells
Eukaryote- archea, bacteria, amoeba
Prokaryote-fungi, plants, animals

Scientists and Their Work


Louis Pasteur- a Frenchman who lived from 1822 to 1895. He discovered many important things
about the biology of microorganisms that became useful in food preparation
Pasteurization- the preservation of beverages and foodstuff by heat treatment
Fermentation- the process whereby sugar is changed into acid
Dr. Edward Jenners- vaccine (from vacca, Latin word of cow) and their application vaccination
Germiniano de Ocampo, M.D.-a multi awarded eye specialist, he pioneered in eye research and was
the first to introduce and perform the first corneal transplant in the Philippines
Eduardo Q. Quisumbing, Ph.D.-he made tremendous contributions to researches on medical plants
in the Philippines. His book, Medicinal Plants in the Philippines, is a pioneering research work on
medicinal plants in the country. He worked for the restoration of the herbarium while he was
Director of the National Museum. The herbarium was destroyed in World WAR II
Gregorio T. Velasquez, Ph.D. - he pioneered the study of Philippine algae, having done the first
intensive study on blue-green algae. His researches on algae, which he undertook for at least 30
years, earned him local and international recognition
Francisco M. Foronda, Ph.D. - because of his immense contributions to poultry science, he was
cited as the Father of Poultry Science in the Philippines and the Father of Thai Poultry
Industry . He has more than 500 scientific articles on poultry and livestock production. His works
are recognized in the Philippines and in other Asian countries
Frncisco O. Santos,Ph.D.-hi numerous studies focused on the nutritive values and chemical
composition of Filipino foods. He determined that nutrient and vitamin content of traditional
Filipino foods and the nutritional requirements and problems of the Filipinos.
Carmen C. Velasquez, Ph.D. - as a parasitologist, her contributions include the discovery of
several species and genera of parasitic worms in Philippine fish and birds, and in humans. Most of
her work appeared in international scientific journals
Jose Vera Santos, Ph.D. - a professor of Botany and a reforestation advocate, Dr. Santos did a
number of researches in taxonomy which were published here and abroad. One of his notable
researches was on the anatomical characteristics of bamboo and grass.
William G. Padolina, Ph.D.- a distinguished scientist and teacher, his work in botany and
chemistry earned him several awards, among which are the 1982 National Academy of Science and

Technology for Outstanding Young Scientist in Phytochemistry and the 1985 Ten Outstanding Young
Men (TOYM) Award for Science and Technology
