Bach himself, in scoring his church cantatas, would frequently’ give the accompaniment of the chorale sectiong to one cornett and three trombones. \ This same combination was also the usual one for playing chorales from the fowers of those German cities that supported. town musicians (Stadtpfelfér). This anciét practice of regular daily performance of religious music remains a most worthy, custom easily adaptable to modern Gpeete By Bach's time, the repertoire of German chorale melodies was practically complete. His contribution to the German chorale lies in his many masterful harmionizations of these . old tunes many of which date back to Martin Luther. Luter in turn obtained them from various sources. Some, as in the case of Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, were adapted from Latin hymns.
