COACH SIMON ENGINEERS UPSET WIN
------------------------------------------------Perth,WA | The Perth Cougars ar fast getting a
reputation as the best home team in the National Super
League. Their record stands at 5-1 now and their latest
victim was the Townsville Marlins.
Perth are lead by Coach John Simon who spent
many years at Townsville under Mark Hohn. Tonight that
experience paid off as he devised a defensive game plan
that not just shut down Patrick Gill but had him an dthe
team clueless. "We knew a little but about thier
tendencies" said Simon. "If we did that they generally
did this so that helped".
It was a wild start to the game with both sides
fumbling away possession and then turning it over with a
pick. The Marlins were intercepted on the goal line and
Perth rushed a blitz form the weak side but rolled
coverage over the middle where Gill went too.
The first score of the game came after another
Cougar interception. Anthony Creighton got the home side
really going with a 68 yard run through traffic and the
Fullback Sam Jowett was on the end of a swing pass to
crach over in the corner for the 7-0 lead.
Perth were stopped on downs next time with the
ball and that gave Ngatau Graham the chance right on
halftime to kick a field goal. Any thoughts Townsville
might take charge in the third were quickly dispelled as
Curtis Tennell caught an 18 yard throw for a 14-4 lead.
The Marlins offense was going nowhere so they needed
help from the defence and Josh Ciraldo gave them what
they wanted when he picked a pass and took it back 20
yards for the score. And when Graham added another 3
pointer it was a one point game with under 5 minutes to
play.
Perth took their chance however and it was team
captain Jarrod Crawford who got across the stripe to
kick Perth 8 points clear. Townsville still had two
chances to at least send the game into overtime but
their final drives ended with a put and a fumble.
