Animal Adaptation Project

In this project, you will create an animal which we will call an “inventa-animal” with six
structural adaptations and its environment. You will have to create a drawing, as well as
a biography for your “inventa-animal.”

Assignment
1. Create an “inventa-animal” that has at least six (6) structural adaptations. Remember,
adaptations are any inherited characteristics of organisms that make it better able to survive its
environment. Structural adaptations refer to any physical part of an organism’s body. For
example: webbed feet, wings, a pointed beak, or spots.

2. Choose an environment in which your “inventa-animal” lives. Take into consideration what
structural adaptations you have given your “inventa-animal.”

3. Your final product will be a booklet containing your drawing and biography for your “inventa-
animal.” To create your booklet, fold an 11 x 18 piece of construction paper in half.

4. On this paper, as best you can, draw your “inventa-animal” in the environment you chose. Do the
drawing in light pencil first and use all of the space available. When you are satisfied with your
drawing color it in and label its six (6) structural adaptations. Computer generated drawings are
acceptable but still be need to be in color and labeled. The drawing on the white sheet of paper
should be attached with glue or by staples on the inside left of your booklet.

5. Create a biography for you “inventa-animal.” This biography should be at least three (3)
paragraphs in length, if not more. Important information that should be in your biography are:
a. How long your “inventa-animal” has been around
b. What animals are your “inventa-animal” related to
c. Size and weight
d. A description of your “inventa-animal’s” environment
e. Reproduction habits (Does it lay eggs, or have live young, or be creative and invent a method
of reproduction like cloning)
f. Your “inventa-animal’s” prey and predators
g. A description of how your “inventa-animal” benefits from each of its six (6) structural
adaptations.
*Before you start writing, remember, graphic organizers are a good place to start!

6. Your final draft of your biography can be typed with double spacing. Your final draft can also be
written on white lined paper with pen. You should skip lines while you write. Also, all writing
should be done on the front side of the paper. When your final draft is complete, staple the
paper(s) to the right inside half of your booklet.

7. On the front cover of your booklet, create a title page. Information that should appear on the title
page:
a. Title of the assignment: Animal Adaptation Project
b. The name of your “inventa-animal”
c. A small drawing
d. Your name
e. Class block
f. Due Date:
