ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Internal combustion engines have been the mainstay of automobile design for a
century. They ignite petrol, diesel or similar type of liquid fuels in a number of
cylinders, and the timed explosions drive the pistons, which then rotate a central
crankshaft. There are various types of such engines, including four-stroke sparkignition found in most cars, four-stroke diesel, and two-stroke versions of both as
found in chainsaws, motorcycles, outboard motors etc.
The course material prepared in the form of presentation slides has been the
outcome of authors past few years of experience of teaching Internal
Combustion Engines in the undergraduate level at Indian Institute of Technology
Guwahati. While preparing the material, sufficient care has been taken to explain
the various topics right from the fundamentals and place them in a systematic
manner so that even a beginner finds it easier to understand. To appreciate the
engineering fundamentals of internal combustion engines, a set of problems
covering various topics are also given at the end of the lectures notes.
The author would like to place on record the financial assistance provided by the
QIP-Curriculum Development Cell, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati for
the preparation of the course material. Thanks are also due to Dr R. Tiwari, QIP
Co-ordinator for his time-to-time suggestions toward the successful completion
of the project.
