Abortion in the Bible

SHAME AND FEAR

"I had sex outside of marriage when I was a teenager," a woman once shared with me from church, "I dated a guy from my church youth group. We started kissing for a while and having makeout sessions in his car. It advanced to sexual petting, until finally I gave my virginity to him. It was with horror and shame that I discovered I became pregnant after that." Scared, full of shame and guilt, she snuck off to the abortion clinic, at her boyfriend's prompting, and aborted the baby. "I've never forgotten my baby," she said, tearfully, "I regret it every day of my life." The fear of her family, friends and church finding out that she had premarital sex had forced her to run and cover her tracks before her shame was exposed. What she thought was a quick, "easy-fix" will now haunt her for the rest of her life.

Scared, full of shame and guilt, she snuck off to the abortion clinic, at her boyfriend's prompting, and aborted the baby.
YOUR CHOICE

"Every human has a right to choose what is right for them," a sign reads at a pro-abortion campaign. "Keep abortion safe and legal," reads another and a woman proudly holds up a hand-written, "Jesus gave us choice" sign. The last sign stood out to me. It's a prime example of how a simple teaching from the Bible can be distorted, how we can take the basis of what we've heard or been taught and apply it to some random

principle that God doesn't even condone. Well, how do we know what God thinks? Simple. We read the letter He wrote to us: The Bible.
BEFORE WE WERE BORN

Abortion is killing. There is no way to sugar-coat this. Life begins with conception, so as soon as a man's sperm hits the woman's egg and that baby begins to form, life has begun. God knew us while we were still in our mothers' bellies. An expression in Psalm 139:13 says, ". . . thou has covered me in my mother's womb", but not only that, God knew us before we were even formed. Jeremiah, a prophet that lived during the Babylon invasion to Jerusalem around 587 B.C., writes, "Then the word of the Lord came unto me saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." Jeremiah 1:4-5. God knew Jeremiah before he was even formed in his mother's belly and God planned for him to be a prophet. Abortion may be legal as far as the government is concerned, but just because the government says "go" doesn't mean you're given the green light.

God knew us while were still in our mothers' bellies . . . but not only that, God knew us before were even formed.
". . . Children are an heritage from the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward." Psalm 127:3. This is an issue with absolutely no middle ground. The Bible clearly teaches that an unborn child is a human being. Millions say, "It's a matter of choice", but who's choice is it? It's impossible to ask the child if they wanted to be aborted or not. Can you imagine if you were the one that was aborted and never had a chance at life? Hard to imagine, I know, because you are full of life now and get to enjoy the beauty of what God has created, but it only takes a moment to just to put that aside and consider the other side of the coin. Any human life that is snubbed, whether it is fully formed or not, is murder. A baby is a person, a human life, whether they are born or unborn. The formation has already begun in your womb and life has begun, as the verses above confirm. God says, in Genesis 9:6, that human life is important and we have a responsibility before God to protect human life. If we murder, their blood is on our hands: "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man."
CHRISTIANS AND ABORTION

I read on an abortion website a startling statistic: Over 50% of abortions are from women that have identified themselves as Christians.

What?! I had to reread that statement and then I did some further research to confirm this. Just like the story I had shared at the beginning of this article, many women had placed themselves in bad situations, just like my friend had. They had opened doors that should've remained closed: They had been alone with a man in a situation that should've been chaperoned . . . They had gone to a late night party when they should've stayed home . . . They had needed more parental guidance in the midst of a new boyfriend/girlfriend relationship . . . They had started kissing and lightly making out thinking it would go no further . . . . . . Many had crossed a line they shouldn't have gone near to begin with. The Bible talks about modesty, purity and even a woman marrying with her virginity intact. In Biblical times, a man was allowed to divorce a woman if he married her and found out she was not a virgin. (Read Matthew 19:9) It is important to keep ourselves out of bad situations so that bad things don't happen. Making just one wrong choice can cause a permanent echo throughout our entire life.
CONSIDERING ABORTION?

You may read this, finding yourself already pregnant. Maybe one of the situations above hits home for you. Maybe you've put yourself in a situation you shouldn't have. Not only do you regret it, but you're faced with the consequences of that decision: pregnancy. With every wrong choice we make, there is a consequence. Be strong and face up to the mistake you've made and whether you choose to keep your baby or give it away is the choice you need to make, not whether you kill the baby or not. Someone who doesn't love or believe in God or the Bible will have no problem living in opposition against it, but if you are a Bible-believing Christian, that is not you. Facing God when you die is more scary than facing your family now. If you love God and His word, and want to do what is right, abortion isn't an option for you. It was never an option.
