Hello everyone, still a chill in the air, but

snakes have been sighted and
mosquitoes are out.
BHA AGM - We held our AGM on the 19th of September.
Our Annual Report is on our website. This has been a
very interesting and busy year. This has been a team
effort with significant community support and interest. In
particular a big thank you to:
Our loyal members and welcome to all our
New members;
Talking Heads we have been greedy this
year and Trish has been so very supportive;
A wonderful committee, who all come when
asked and participated in a broad range of
community activities throughout the
Bellarine;
Our very generous donors.
We continue to build relationships within the community
and are very pleased at the number of traders who are
now members and regularly attend our meetings. We
have kept our members and the community involved
through regular newsletters and monthly Talking Heads
article. Our monthly meetings have been well supported
and have encouraged a broad range of discussion.
A sustainable Barwon Heads is vital to us all and we
need to inform ourselves of ways to understand and
protect our coastal community and environment. One of
these ways is for us to work more closely and to support
each other. We need to ensure that we are listened to
and our views valued. We are located in a very precious
part of Victoria, we need to protect it for our children and
not just abandon it to one size fits all planning codes
which seem more focused on providing opportunities for
developers than protecting the uniqueness of our
coastal village.
During this year we have seen the City of Greater
Geelong Councillors replaced by Administrators and
new electoral boundaries recommended by the
Victorian Electoral Commission. During 2016-2017 we
will continue to focus on Safety and Security; Planning;
Pedestrian amenity; and the Environment. The
Structure Plan Review will be very time consuming and a
challenge.
Our Committee for 2016-2017 is:
President: Sandy Gatehouse
Vice President: Jeremy Gaylard
Secretary: Sarah Jackson
Treasurer/membership: Geoffrey Waite
Committee: Paul Fox, Judith Brooks, Richard Hastings,
and Stephen Paterson
Hopefully we will encourage others to join the
Committee during the year.
Member for Bellarine - We were very pleased to
welcome the Honorable Lisa Neville MP, our State
Member for the Bellarine and Minister for Police and
Minister for Water to our meeting. We are very lucky that
Lisa as our local member and a senior Minister in the
State Government is very interested in all aspects of our
community and willing to represent us in other forums if

www.barwonheadsassociation.com

we ask. She was very open and frank and all of those
present enjoyed meeting her and listening to what she
shared.
Lisa talked about a range of State and local topics or
particular interest was security and safety and many of
us felt reassured to hear from the Minister for Police that
there have been significant changes to the way policing
is organised on the Bellarine and that they are very
aware of the changes in behaviours and the threats that
people are experiencing. Lisa repeated the message
from police, please lock your cars, houses and garages,
and don't make things easy for thieves. Also make sure
your car keys are hidden away as many thieves are after
the car.
We discussed the forthcoming Barwon Heads Structure
Plan and she encouraged us all to get behind the
process and participate. There was significant
discussion about the risks of the boundary being
changed and further development in the town.
Lisa is watching progress at the City of Greater Geelong
very closely and many present shared their concerns
about the over development of Barwon Heads and the
inappropriate planning zones in our little residential
streets. Many residents are sick of being bullied by
developers and threatened with VCAT if they continue to
object. It is every persons right to object to over
development and the removal of vegetation.
Matters of concern discussed with Lisa included:
- the timing of the Cadel Evans bike ride (settled for
forthcoming year, but what else can we do to support
the town)
- the town boundary (can we set a longer time frame,
review every 5 years not realistic)
- the culture of CoGG
- planning and over development
- protecting Ramsar wetlands and meeting
environmental standards and reporting obligations.
We have also seen progress from the government grant
to improve community safety, in particular the
pedestrian crossings and footpaths. We are also
looking forward to better netball facilities in Barwon
Heads, and an improved football oval.
9 Bridge Road development.
The BHA put in a submission to support

Amendment C354 which seeks to apply permanent

Heritage controls to 9 Bridge Rd and it is now on
public exhibition. Submissions can be made on line,
closing date Monday 26th September 2016.
This process will mean that all parties are entitled to put
in submissions for or against this heritage control
amendment. There were well over one hundred
submissions objecting to this proposed development
and, to ensure the amendment gets strong community
affirmation, it is important that submissions of support for
Amendment C354 are sent to Council.
Pedestrian Safety Project - after six steering
committee meetings and two detailed community
consultations, Vic Roads has almost completed the
construction of pedestrian crossings in the township.
There is still discussion on the finalisation of the
southern footpath. Please remember that the village of
Barwon Heads CBD is a 40k zone.
Barwon Heads Structure Plan key dates. We
encourage our members and residents of Barwon
Heads to participate.
- Register with CoGG by 14th October to attend
workshop on 26th October
- Participate in drop in sessions at the Barwon Heads
Hall 11am to 1:00pm; 5:30pm 7:30pm on 27th October
Make a comment on HELP SHAPE THE PLACE
and WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE PLACE by 11th
November (both separate processes)
And of course thank you to our members who have
rejoined, and a big welcome to all our new members.
The on-going support of our community is much
appreciated.
Next meeting: Monday 17th October 7:00pm at the
Senior Citizens Centre Clifford Pde Please come
and bring your ideas so we can put in a BHA
submission to the Structure Plan HELP SHAPE THE
PLACE AND PROTECT OUR COASTAL VILLAGE.

glass-ware and other items are displayed, and of

course, the large table on which we sort the special
pieces of china and hand-bags, childrens gear, and
other things which come into the Main Shop after the
initial sorting in Sorting-room, and Show-room.

More Changes!
Theres no doubt about the determination of a
group of our volunteers. Once they get the bit
between their teeth, they work like mad to
achieve their objective.
In this case, they had decided that the surface of the
stage area of our Main Op Shop, used as a work, and
staff recreation area, was looking decidedly tired. Now
that the walls and shelving are all bright and light with
new paint, the unpainted floor-boards looked rather
poor.
Their decision was to cover the original floor with new
grey-patterned carpet tiles. Using great strength and
energy they removed EVERYTHING that was not nailed
down/fitted. This required the removal of huge numbers
of books which awaited sorting, plus boxes waiting for
re-cycling. They shifted a very large cabinet in which

The carpet-tiles were then placed, and even the small

nook which we use as our Change-room now has
carpet tiles. The effect is well worth their efforts, as we
are told by many of our regular customers. That same
team now envisages covering the surface of the very
large old kitchen table which has served as the area on
which sorting is done. I often feel that if I dont move
quickly enough, I might find myself with a whole new
look, which I guess I probably need at age 81!!
The rest of our volunteers are all just delighted by the
whole new feel that it has given to the shop.
Each of our sorting-teams occasionally find that they are
overwhelmed with goods which arrive. I still cannot
believe that we still have so many electrical items
dropped off. Some, like an almost new printer, or a
coffee machine make me wonder how people can afford
to buy then discard such things.

eared that they just have to be sent for recycling.

Our customers are so discerning!
We send off many boxes for re-cycling each week,
though they should just go into yellow house-hold bins.
The team have also suggested that whilst we can
usually sell gardening or cookery magazines, that the
usual Womens Magazines, do not sell unless they
have come out after January 2015.
Occasionally, we receive something which is very old,
but absolutely fascinating. Recently, a young woman
whose family has been musical for several
generations, arrived with a box of old music. I could
scarcely believe that some dated back to pre-World War
1. I have already sold some of these amazing pieces to a
collector who loved the picture of Lord Kitchener on the
front of a book of Songs of the Empire. There are still
some of these gems available, so if you have an interest
in these, do come along.
I am amazed at things such as a Wedgewood plate
which arrived. I was SO tempted, but since my sons tell
me I must Get rid of all that stuff before you drop off the
perch Mum I have resisted it.

PLEASE make sure that as many people as you know

who are regular donors are aware that we are not
allowed to sell such things.

It is always such a temptation for we volunteers to collect

far more than our families will want to face having to
dispose of later.

Our book-team, who valiantly sort huge quantities of

books and magazines find that they become quite
frustrated by very old hard-cover books, (often dustcovered), or paper-backs which are dirty, or so dog-

Enjoy the lovely spring weather, and God bless you all.

_______________________________________________

We were all delighted with our September concert which presented a return visit from the very
talented young group of musicians from The Geelong College! Led by Peter Hannah, who has been
inspiring wind instrument students for well-over 30 years, proves it to be a very demanding profession as
you will see! He wrote some very comprehensive notes from which I will largely quote!

Thank you for having us again today. It is such a joy to work with young adults who share the same passion that you do! They are a talented group of
musicians who all play more than one instrument! We have all just been heavily involved in the School Musical, Guys and Dolls which finished last
night, so you will have to excuse us if we seem a little tired. I am filling in for our flautist who unfortunately cant be here today. (Peter had been
playing the clarinet & saxophone during all the performances & suddenly had to transfer to the flute! Remarkable effort!) Introducing students in the
quartet: Ebony Skene plays clarinet & also played bass clarinet in the musical; Jack Thornton plays clarinet, tenor saxophone & piano; Rory Vagg
plays all saxophones; soprano, alto, tenor & baritone, which he played in the musical.
For our first work, wed like to play a movement of the Classical Italian composer, Luigi Boccherinis most famous string quintets in E Major, arranged for woodwind quartet by Terry Kenny.
Our second choice was one of six pieces written for piano, Moment Musical by Austrian Classical composer Franz Schubert & also arranged for woodwind quartet by Terry Kenny. Ludwig
van Beethoven was a crucial figure in the transition between the Classical & Romantic eras in Western art music, & he remains one of the most famous & influential of all composers. He
wrote an overture & incidental music to a play called The Ruins of Athens, The Turkish March, once again arranged by Terry Kenny. We would like to finish with a group of works by Joseph
Bonnisch, a German composer & Flautist. It is in a rock style in 3 movements beginning with In The Morning followed by Fascination & concluding with Young People.
The next group also comprises Year 10 students who are accelerating in VCE Music doing Units 1&2. Georgia White is a violinist, double bassist & has just completed Grade 7 (with an A) on
the clarinet. An Trinh is a clarinettist, alto saxophonist & is sitting her Associate Diploma of Music on piano later this year. She is one of the few people who are blessed, or cursed, with perfect
pitch. I say cursed because the clarinet & saxophone are transposing instruments, which means that all of the 8 different clarinets & saxophones use the same fingerings. So C would be
played the same way on each instrument. The biggest problem for An with that is that she only hears in Concert Pitch & must transpose everything that she sees!
Our first work is by the German Romantic Flautist & Composer, Kaspar Krummer. It is actually written for 3 flutes; however , it was arranged by P Laube for 3 clarinets, which I think works
beautifully. It is interesting to note that Krummer was a multi-instrumentalist as well & taught himself the flute while learning violin, French horn, trumpet, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, cello &
contra bassoon. I might add that this was all before TV & technology! No mobile phones & computer games for him! His piece is simply titled Trio & we are playing the 2nd & 3rd movements,
Andante & Allegro Vivace. We would now like to play a piece written for piano by the Italian Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti. George Waln has done a beautiful job arranging it for 3
clarinets. Its quite sad that the clarinet had not yet been developed & that there is no repertoire from this wonderful period. We are playing the first movement of 2, Pastorale. We would like to
play another work by Beethoven; this time it was written for 2 oboes & English horn or cor anglis & is another transcription by George Waln. It too was titled Trio(very inventive) & we are
playing the final movement, Presto.
I am pleased to say that this next piece is not a transcription & was actually written by Helga Warner-Buhlmann for 3 clarinets. It is a cute, quirky, 21st Century little waltz called Walzer. Now
we are moving back to the Classical Period with one of the most prolific & influential composers of his time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We are playing Divertimento from The Marriage of
Figaro, arranged by Franz Sabine Meyer. We are doing the 2nd movement, Arietta, you who know, says sweet woman. Im not sure if the translation is accurate?. Our final piece for you
today before we move to An playing the piano is a Central European traditional Polka. It was arranged by Herman Hummel.
Finally we were given an outstanding performance of An Trinhs recital for her Associate Diploma of Music on piano later this year. She has chosen from the Baroque period the JS Bach
Prelude & Fugue no. 24.,followed by a small suite comprising 6 Folk Dances from Bela Bartok (b.1881 in Hungary, now Rumania-d.1945 in New York) collected during his travels round his
native Hungary gathering much folk music before it was lost. Maurice Ravel(1875-1937) was Ans next choice, the sonatine Miroirs, a similar era to Debussy. She finished her recital in the
Romantic era with Chopins Waltz first published in 1833, a wonderful piece with differing dance themes showing the brilliance of the composer & challenging the soloist! They certainly didnt
appear to be tired & their youthful enthusiasm with their lovely program with so many delightfully transposed pieces was a great success!
And finally, just a note to say the Barwon Heads Chorale concert, fundraising for the Road Home project (providing housing, clothing, toiletries and other necessities for women & children
escaping domestic violence) was well supported on 18/09 in the Hall with an enthusiastic crowd finishing up with a singalong of footy songs. Rousing renditions of both Sons of the West
and We are Geelong took the roof off the Community Hall, and then patrons quenched their thirst on a sumptuous afternoon tea provided by Chorale members. All funds raised go to this
worthy charity, for more information go to http://www.theroadhome.net.au
Our next concert will be very exciting! Jacinta Dennett will be performing a variety of repertoire on Harp with a Didgeridoo & Clarinettist! It will be held during Seniors week at the special price
of $5, at All Saints Church on Sunday 9th October at 2.30pm. Please join us for afternoon tea after the concert.

Featuring a career-best performance from the multi-talented Viggo Mortensen and
a superb original soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, FAR FROM MEN is a
gripping tale of morality and friendship set during the Algerian War, against an
imposing mountainous landscape.
Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Reda Kateb.
Camus sets the movies initial course, but Mr. Oelhoffen resolutely steers it home
with political context, historical hindsight, an unambiguous moral imperative and a
pair of well-matched performances; put another way, he makes the story his own.

The Barwon Estuary Project

Expand your writing skills in the Barwon Estuary Project
The Barwon Estuary Project reaches out to all those interested in the biodiversity and health of the Barwon Estuary.
Communities (both permanent and temporary) along the Estuary are invited to increase and share their knowledge and
appreciation of this amazing area.
The Working Party has created a variety of ways in which you can develop your observation skills and record your findings.
We plan to eventually publish a community-developed journal.
Enrolments are now open for our newest offering: a series of three consecutive writing workshops conducted by award winning
local author Dorothy Johnston and beginning on November 20 this year.
The workshops will focus on 'writing from nature' across a range of genres, from direct observation and journal writing, to poetry,
to imaginative prose.
Participants will be offered a selection of stimulus material at the start of each session, both from well-known and lesser known
'nature writers'.
A part of each workshop will be devoted producing a piece of writing. Participants will be encouraged to share these, and to
comment on each other's work.
The workshops will focus on developing writing skills, including the use of natural imagery, how to convey a strong sense of
place, building a narrative, whether fiction or non-fiction, and how to refine and edit a piece of writing from the first draft stage.

Dorothy Johnston

Dorothy Johnston's 10th novel was published in April. Through a Camel's Eye, a sea-change mystery, is set mainly in Queenscliff and introduces police constables Chris Blackie
and Anthea Merritt.
The workshops are free and open to participants of 12 years and older. Workshop dates: Sunday November 20, Sunday December 4, Sunday February 19. Please address
registration and inquiries to barwonestuary@gmail.com
For further details on the project and this activity, please see http://barwonestuaryproject.wordpress.com/ where you will also find information about the next Bird Photography
Workshop (October 23) and the next Guided Estuary Walk (November 13).

All activities are free.

talking life

Complete with their youth would be brut

strength, wheelbarrows and spades. I had
visions of serving home-made lemonade to
their bronzed, sweaty smiles. I told my
lover that my eye candy was a professional
recommendation. How our lives could be
made easier by outsourcing this physical
feat.
To which, he looked at me sideways,
smiled his inward smile, and instead of
helping me organised the young blood He organised my in-laws.
My father-in-law is 73. His wife, 10 years
younger. It was with great excitement to
my small ones that their Opa and Rosie
would be coming down for the weekend.
For two whole sleepovers. There was
promise of lolly snakes and pavlova. Of op
shop bounty and doona lands. For me,
there was just the promise of hard work.
Because instead of the strapping young
lads pushing the dirt from front to back I had a sinking feeling it was going to be
me.

So, I was told I needed two young men

with broad backs and strong arms.
It was professional advice. Provided by a
local lad with a big-earth moving machine.
For it was earth-moving that I wanted. To
pretty much move my backyard into my
front yard. But the big machine was too
wide to get beside my house and out the
back. Meaning the landscaping would
have to be done by hand. Which is where
the two broad-backed men come in.

We began as all good garden make-overs

begin, with a trip to Bunnings. After
spending the GDP on sausages, we made
our way home to chainsaw, rake and dig.
There were mutterings of inappropriate
language from me to my love. Some were
silent in breath. Some were more audible
than others.
All my words were pretty ugly.
My in-laws chipped away. Quietly.
Methodologically. Patiently. My father-inlaw wearing a knee stabilisation brace. My
mother-in-law wearing gumboots.
Chainsawing. Raking. Digging. Slowly
moving the earth from one garden bed to
another. I continued to moan and to
complain to anyone who would listen. Until

exasperated, I asked my father-in-law

what his secret was to keep going. In the
garden. In relationships. In life.
He looked at me square as he smiled his
tired eyes and said simply one sentence:
Persistence beats resistance.
When faced with strong adversity or with
having our buttons pressed, sometimes
we are really being asked to make a
choice. We can choose to react to what is
played out - grumble and moan when its
hard or uncomfortable. Or we can act out
with intention and produce magical results.
The definition of a garden is simply a
maintained environment. It takes
diligence and work to create a fertile
space. When planned mindfully and
constructed carefully, we can shift
seemingly impossible things and make
room to plant new seeds. These in turn
can create intentions for a more
sustainable growth and our deeper
learnings.
By hand, over 2 weekends, we shifted our
front yard into our backyard. We planted
naked trees that took seemingly hours to
spring to blossom. We bordered vegie
boxes and mulched fruiting beds. We
chainsawed and dug out a dying tree. And
at the end of the last Sunday, covered in
sweaty soil and satisfaction, I asked my
father-in-law what his knee brace was
really for.
He smiled again his weary smile and
patted the side of his leg.
Its for sympathy, he said. As he put his
spade away.

How do I fix my loose dentures?

A lot of people have trouble with dentures.
Dentures tend to get looser over time due to
the gums shrinking.
There are a few things we can do to improve loose
dentures.
1) Reline- If your dentures are a few years old the fit of the
denture may be off. We can then 'reline' your plate by
taking an impression inside the plate. We can usually do
a reline within a day, so
you only have to go
without your plate for a
few hours.
2) New denture- If the
fit of the denture is really
poor then it may be time
to consider a new set.
3) Upgrade- If you have a partial denture (with some of
your own teeth left) you may be able to upgrade to a
chrome denture. Chrome partial dentures are usually
more comfortable than acrylic partial dentures because
they are thinner than acrylic dentures. Chrome Dentures
also clip onto your natural teeth so are quite tight. We can
also add clips or magnets onto your remaining teeth to
hold the plates in tighter.
4) Mini implants- If you don't have many of your natural
teeth left, there may not be enough to hold your denture in
place. We find people with full lower dentures (with none
of their natural lower teeth left) often struggle with loose
dentures. Mini implants are great in this scenario. We
usually place four mini implants, and your denture can
clip onto them. This is a fairly simple procedure and can
all be done within the surgery under local anaesthetic
with you walking out with tight dentures on the same day.
5) Full implants- of course, the ideal option would be to
have implants and crowns put in to have teeth that are
permanent and do
not come in and out.
You would have a full
set of teeth that feel
like real teeth.
However, this is the
most expensive
option.
You can find more
information on our
website
www.oceanbreezede

There are 19 venues to visit and more than 40 artists to meet. The trail gives visitors the opportunity to talk
to the artists who make the local art scene tick, admire their work and even take some home.

Exhibiting artists include Clare O'Donoghue, Richard Weatherly OAM, Joel Wolter,
Patsy Bush, Libbet Loughnan, Will Wilson, John Druce, Mark Cairns, Kaz McGlynn,
Sam Spry, Ross Harrison, Barwon Heads Group, Bill Linford, and Dennis Sonogan, plus
many more talented locals.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

Spring clean to keep your
home safe this summer
With the smell of jasmine in the air and a few teaser days of 20C, we
know spring has well and truly sprung. The good news is winter is
behind us and summer is just around the corner as is the fire season.
And that means it's time to start tidying up around the home. Trimming
trees, mowing grass and cutting back bushes and shrubs will help
ensure you are reducing the amount of fuel around your home.
Cleaning gutters and clearing out sheds of unwanted clutter also
helps reduce the fuel load and your home will look all the better for it.
Based on climate data and input from Australia's fire services, the
2016 Southern Australia Seasonal Outlook predicts western Victoria
is heading towards a fire season with an above normal fire risk.
Nationally, we have had the second wettest winter on record, and
here in Victoria, September was the wettest in nearly 100 years. At
the same time, each month of 2016 has been above the average
mean temperature. We know that water, good soil moisture plus
sunshine equals strong vegetation growth, which becomes fuel for
fires.
For more information:
http://news.cfa.vic.gov.au/news/southern-australia-seasonal-bushfire-outlook-2016.html
The Outlook will be reviewed towards the end of spring to take into account the impacts of actual temperatures and
rainfall in the lead up to summer. We'll provide local insights to the upcoming fire season specific to the Bellarine
Peninsula in future editions of Talking Heads.
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is holding an Open Day on Sunday 6 November from 10am 1pm at the
Barwon Heads Fire Station, Sheepwash Road. Visitors will be able to tour the fire station, explore our
trucks, participate in demonstrations and learn more about being a CFA volunteer. There will also be
activities for kids and a sausage sizzle.
Barwon Heads Fire Brigade has a Facebook page informing you of local community safety events and insights to
what the Brigade is up to. Make sure you jump on and
give us a like to follow what we are up to!

Chelsie Higham is excited about her new

salon in Barwon Heads and is loving the
warm welcome shes received from
everyone.
When Chelsie invited me in to have a facial using her
new Dermalux Led Phototherapy treatment, I was a bit
hesitant as I have skin thats sensitive to most products.
Chelsie, with 8 years experience, assured me that this
treatment was non invasive and can help to repair
damaged skin.
Off I went where I met Chelsies mum Jacquie on
reception then Cheslie took me into the treatment
room...comfortable, warm & spotless...so far so good.
Laying down, I was gently cleansed and had protective
glasses placed over my eyes. The Dermalux implement
was then placed above my face, turned on & proceeded
to go through a spectrum of colours. The feeling was
warm, gentle & relaxing...20 minutes later, I was
moisturised, given light make up & lipstick & some
sample size cleanser, serum & moisturiser and that was
it. That night, my skin felt really soft & the next day
someone asked me if Id been refreshed! Ill definately
be back for more.
Chelsie is on the corner next to the Winestore &
Osteopath and you can call her on (03)

through to older adults. Although Faye loves to treat everyone, she has a special interest in complex conditions,
women health and babies & children. Light pressure is applied to different areas of your body to encourage the
release of any strain or tension that may be compromising your health. Treatments are extremely relaxing and
many patients report that they can actually feel their body unwinding as they are worked on. The philosophy behind
this approach recognises that our natural state of being is health and that the capacity to heal is inherent within all
of us. The same forces that power our growth and development in the womb are also responsible for the repair and
recovery of our cells later in life. The effects of these forces can be felt in all your bodys tissues as an underlying
motion that provides you with energy, health and life.

Silky ravioli filled with seafood is my idea of a perfect spring meal...serve it sitting in the hot chicken bone broth we made last month (or hot veggie or fish

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

The Iliotibial band is a thick tendon that inserts on the outside of your knee. The function of the Iliotibial band is to help slow
movement and torque at your knee during impact. Iliotibial band syndrome is a common cause of knee pain in runners. The
cause is repetitive trauma to the Iliotibial band insertion on the outside of the knee resulting in tendonitis and severe lateral
knee pain while running. Eventually this condition will result in degeneration of the tendon and progress to a condition called
tendinosis. This means there will be excessive tightness due to abnormal scar formation and may become a source of
chronic knee pain for the runner.
A thorough subjective and objective examination from an Osteopath or Physiotherapist is usually sufficient to diagnose
Iliotibial band syndrome, investigations such as an ultrasound or MRI may be used to assist with diagnosis.
Most cases of Iliotibial band syndrome settle well with appropriate Osteopathic or Physiotherapy care. This requires careful
assessment by the Osteopath or Physiotherapist to determine which factors have contributed to the development of the
condition, with subsequent correction of these factors.
The success rate of treatment is largely dictated by patient compliance.
The key components of treatment:- The patient rests sufficiently from ANY activity that
increases their pain until they are symptom free. Activities which place large amounts of
stress through the ITB should be minimised, these include: running, squatting, jumping, and
going up and down stairs.
Exercising into pain must also be avoided. This allows the body to begin the healing
process in the absence of further tissue damage. Once the patient can perform these activities
pain free, a gradual return to these activities is indicated provided there is no increase in
symptoms.
Ignoring symptoms or adopting a 'no pain, no gain' attitude is likely to lead to the
problem becoming chronic. Immediate, appropriate treatment in patients with this condition
is essential to ensure a speedy recovery. Once the condition is chronic, healing slows significantly resulting in markedly
increased recovery times.
The R.I.C.E regime. Is beneficial in the initial phase of the injury (first 72 hours) or when inflammatory signs are present (i.e.
morning pain or pain with rest). This involves resting from aggravating activities, regular icing,
The use of a compression bandage and keeping the leg elevated.
Anti-inflammatory medication. May also significantly hasten the healing process by reducing the pain and swelling
associated with inflammation.
Soft tissue manipulation and Stretching.
Correct biomechanical dysfunctions around the low back, pelvic region, knee, and Ankle
Dry needling
Exercises. Patients should perform pain-free flexibility and strengthening exercises as part of their rehabilitation to ensure
an optimal outcome. One of the key components of rehabilitation is pain-free stretching of the ITB along with pain-free

News from the Beaches and Coastal Environs

Barwon Coast is a
Committee of
Management
appointed by the
State Government
with responsibility for
the management of
13km of coastal
crown land from 7W
Collendina to 42W
Blue Rocks, Barwon
Heads covering our
beautiful beaches in
Ocean Grove,
Barwon Heads and 13thBeach.
Our Committee members are local residents appointed
with consideration of the skills and experience that they
have to offer in the management of this important piece
of coastline.
NEW COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT:
The Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate
Change Hon Liliana (Lily) D'Ambrosio has appointed
three new members and reappointed one existing
Committee of Management member, effective 1st of
September 2016 for a period of three years. The
appointments follow an extensive public Expression
of Interest period and bring the total number of
members to nine. Barwon Coast Committee of
Management Inc. members are appointed in two
parts, 18 months apart, to allow a rolling continuity
of corporate knowledge.
Retiring members Kerry Petty & Tony Overman had
their substantial contributions acknowledged at
their last meeting in June. The new members were
formally inducted and welcomed by DELWP at the
end of August and will attend their first committee
meeting in September.
The new members are Shelley Fanning, Peter Rankin
and Elisa Zavadil, with Sandy Gatehouse being
reappointed for another term. They join continuing
members Briony Darcy, Ross Middleton, Ron
Patterson, Mark Rodrigue and Chairman Phil Emery.
In the coming weeks the Barwon Coast website will
be updated with detailed information on all members
of the committee and the skills they bring to
management of our coast.
OUR ENVIRONMENT:
Acute Eyes:
With our vegetation management of the sand dune
system for habitat rehabilitation, woody weed removal

works have been a major activity for our staff these

past winter months. Significant works have been
achieved by staff with support of CVA lead
Volunteers and our Green Army Team. Both a
reward and an stimulation for staff with acute eyes
for plant identification is to spot a winter flowering
orchid in a dune swale whilst working. The
Maroonhood, Pterostylus pedunculata illustrated in
the photo is one such discovery which is a good
indicator of both a better growing season and the
health and vitality of areas of sand dune habitat.
Recognising local native plants recruiting in areas
where weed threats are reduced is a real benefit of
the work.
Barwon Coast's work endeavours to improve
habitat that in turn supports the presence of our
wildlife, a great example is regular sightings of
Echidna through areas of the sand dune system.
Community Support:
Recently the sand dune habitat has benefitted from
the activity of Ocean Grove Coast Care undertaking
plantings on the Ocean Grove Spit along the shared
trail and around Collendina car park. The Group has
gained support for this important work through a
Corangamite Catchment Management Authority
small coastal grant.
The Riverside Camping Ground has also benefitted
from a series of working bees undertaken by a group
of volunteers who enjoy this river environment as
campers through the summer period. Their great
appreciation of this great part of our coast, engages
them to support this environment to help ensure it is
a long lasting activity for others in the future to be
able to benefit.
VISITOR SERVICES:
Supporting Visitors:
Staff servicing the very popular visitor areas of our
coast have recently undertaken site refreshment
works at the main beach grass terraces, Lower
Grants Lookout car park as well as reinforcing a
number of the timber beach stairways which have
been impacted by winter events and the lowering of
the beach. The team's drive to present our coast
well for visitors, faces the challenge of spring with
the better rainfall bringing on grass growth.
MARINE AND COASTAL ACT CONSULTATION
PAPER:
The Victorian Government is delivering on its
commitment to create a new Marine and Coastal Act
to improve the management of our marine and
coastal areas. Our coast is special and important to

all Victorians and is a treasured place for us to live, visit

and work. Healthy coastal and marine environments
support biodiversity, wellbeing, business and recreation.
To be confident that we are doing everything we can to
protect marine and coastal environments now and into
the future, the Victorian Government is creating a new
Marine and Coastal Act as part of a broader system to
manage our coastal areas.
To find out more a 'Public Open House' will be held in
Torquay on 11th October from 3 to 6 pm at Wyndham
Resort, 100 The Esplanade, Torquay.
S u b m i s s i o n s a r e n o w o p e n
Comments and submissions on the Marine and Coastal
Act Consultation Paper are now open and will close on
Sunday 23 October 2016 at midnight AEST.
The Marine and Coastal Act Consultation Paper has
been prepared with the guidance of an expert panel. The
paper explores Victoria's vision and values for a healthy
coastal and marine environment and discusses the
strengths of the current system.
This is an important opportunity for you to share your
feedback and ideas on marine and coastal management
in Victoria.
Have Your Say
To get involved in the conversation and to download a
copy of the Consultation Paper visit Have Your Say at
DELWP http://haveyoursay.delwp.vic.gov.au/ and
provide DELWP with your preferred email address. By
registering to provide feedback you will automatically
receive email updates on the project and public
consultation events.
Your feedback will help inform the development of the
new Act and important changes to our marine and coastal
environments.

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?

Busy, busy
Now that the spring equinox has
passed most of us must realise that
we are having more daylight hours
than darkness.
Observant people will also notice that the
plant and animal world around us is putting
that extra daytime to good use. There is a
steady hum of activity out there.
The plant world has been reclothed in a
whole new wardrobe of greens and floral
and the animal world is noisily showing off its
newest offspring. The Friends of the Lobster
Pot have been putting those extra hours to
good use too.
The Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre (as the
Lobster Pot is also known) has been given a
makeover.
It's the apparently closed green building on
the riverfront near 'At the Heads' restaurant.
The garden is looking lush and green and
weed-free. New glass display cases have
been made and displays arranged. New
occupants for the fish tanks are on the way.
All this activity to be ready for the stream of
summer visitors that will come this summer.
They will start from Boxing Day and continue
until the Australia Day long weekend. That is
only 72 days away.
Get busy and make plans for your visit now.
Your nearest and dearest with a love of our
river estuary will love it.
Don't forget some coins or notes for your
donation.
Come on get on with it!
If you have knowledge and love for the
natural and cultural heritage of our brown
river estuary and would like to share it with
others why not join the like- minded Friends
of the Lobster Pot.
Please contact the group through Barwon
Coast.

SAVE BARWON HEADS ALLIANCE

October 2016 is a very important

month for the Barwon Heads
Community. It's time to have your
say about the Barwon Heads
Structure Plan 2010. All aspects
of the Plan are being reviewed.
Please join in the conversation
th
and consultation process (26 &
27th October).
Details are available from City of
Greater Geelong (COGG).
Save Barwon Heads Alliance (SBHA) was formed
in 2007 in response to a proposal to expand the
Barwon Heads town boundary. It is a community
based organisation with a single focus that is intent
on protecting the sensitive environment
surrounding Barwon Heads for the benefit of
present and future generations. SBHA enjoys a
positive relationship with Barwon Heads
Association (BHA) which has a range of interests
particularly focused on inside the township of
Barwon Heads. A joint statement will be developed
and circulated by both organisations to
demonstrate mutual support and areas of concern
with regard to the proposed expansion of the town
boundary north and south of Geelong Road as
well as other key issues impacting Barwon Heads.
Pamphlets are currently being circulated by
SBHA. They include a membership form, donation
details, history, contact details and a map outlining
the area suggested for expansion outside the town
boundary immediately adjacent to Lake
Murtnaghurt (lagoon and channel). The map
outlines the potential area of residential
development (west of Barwon Heads) that is of
significant concern. This has the potential of
doubling the current resident population and
increasing the number of houses by 1,000, with an
irreversible detrimental effect to Lake Murtnaghurt,
a Ramsar listed wetland. A Ramsar listed wetland
is part of an international intergovernment treaty.
For a wetland to be given Ramsar listing, it must
satisfy criteria (eg sites containing representative,

rare or unique wetland types; sites of international

importance for conserving biological diversity
criteria based on species and ecological
communities; specific criteria based on waterbirds,
fish and other taxa).
About Lake Murtnaghurt: this is part of the Port
Phillip Bay site and is one of 11 Ramsar sites in
Victoria (and 1 of 65 designated in Australia). The
Port Phillip Bay site includes designated locations in
the Western Shoreline, Bellarine Peninsula and
Western Port areas and is 22,646 hectares in total.
This site is currently and primarily managed by
Parks Victoria and Melbourne Water. In a recent
report by the Victorian Auditor General (September
2016) 'Meeting Obligations to Protect Ramsar
Wetlands' it recommends that the Department of
Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP)
oversee the development of a Port Philip Bay site
management plan including the Bellarine Peninsula
site (eg Lake Murtnaghurt). The plan for a Ramsar
site requires an ecological character description.
This description includes outlining the baseline
condition of the site that is used to monitor its
ecological character.

DELWP in the Victorian Auditor General report

advised that the Corangamite Catchment
Management Authority will lead the
management plan development (for the site that
includes Lake Murtnaghurt) and this will be
completed in December 2017. Another
important document relating to Lake
Murtnaghurt is the Victorian Waterway
Management Strategy (2013). This proposes to
integrate wetland management into a waterway
management framework. This framework
incorporates Ramsar sites and one of its key
actions (policy 12.4) required by the Victorian
Government to develop, implement, monitor
and evaluate management response strategies
for any Ramsar sites where monitoring indicates
that a change in ecological character has
occurred or is likely to occur.
SBHA recognises that planning is complex but
also vital to make a contribution to. By providing
the above details we hope that you are a bit
more informed about the surrounding
environment, the government requirements to
oversee it and continue to monitor it, particularly
noting its international significance.
Each month we will provide the Talking Heads
readers and the Barwon Heads community with
more information/facts about the natural
environment of Barwon Heads that we want to
protect through preserving the town boundary.
We hope that this further adds to and enriches
the conversation that supports preserving
Barwon Heads' current settlement boundary.

BARWON HEADS CRICKET CLUB

Theres a blackbird that sits in the
tree outside our bedroom window
every morning and sings up the sun.
Hes been getting up earlier and earlier every week since
the start of spring and providing a joyous overture to the
day. Hes there in the rain and in the shine trying to
whistle up a solar tribute to his lady love.
Thats what the spring will do to a feller.
Getting up early and doing the hard yards in the hope
that the summer will be fertile and productive is what its
all about.
The lads from the BHCC have been working hard too.
Thankfully not on our singing, though it could do with
some work, but on the finer points of the ancient and
grand game for which we have become renowned. Both
indoor and outdoor weve been throwing and catching
and practicing our batting and bowling. The form is
looking great and there are some new faces and some
returning old faces in the crew too.
On the subject of familiar old faces we had a significant
milestone reached by a very familiar face in September.
Craig Biddiscombe, whos decorations as a Barwon
Heads cricketer are too numerous to list here had a
significant birthday. Im not going to give away his age,
but this birthday was more significant that when he

turned 39 and so he had

a little get together to
celebrate it.
Craig managed to play
several games of GFL
footy over the winter so
hell bring a fit body into
the upcoming season
and if his training form is
any indication hes in for
a significant season to
celebrate further his coming of age.
Captains for the season have been appointed and the
season will commence with a one day game on the
weekend following the AFL grand final which is a week
later this season due to the last Saturday in September
being on the 1st of October this year.
Juniors and community cricket will be another week
after that.
The bar is stocked and the Nightwatchmen cards and
memberships are ready. Sponsorship numbers are
looking good and all is ready for another cracking
summer on the village green. If youre looking for some
company or just a cold drink on a warm afternoon then
you are more than welcome at our little club.
Hope to see you down there soon.
More next month with some cricket news.

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

Sunday Kids Ride

Tour Down Under

The first Sunday out of winter saw our first parents ride
with kids, which coincided with Father's Day. Children
and dads met at the CFA on a mild afternoon at half past
three. There were four adults and a big bunch of kids
who took to the tracks and roads of Barwon Heads and
Ocean Grove. We all set off along Saratoga then around
the levee bank before cruising along the river. First stop
was to see Khy and Molly's fishing catch; loads of silver
trevally. Back on the bike and along Carr Street, through
the Village Park then along to the bridge. A few kids
pulled the pin here and were collected by their dad while
the rest of us rode along the tracks to the Dunes. We
turned around and headed back into Barwon Heads
before parting ways to spend the rest of Father's Day at
home with Dad. Audrey said, It was really good for you
and it was fun. We are planning another ride for BHCC
members in the near future. Thanks to all who joined in.
I really enjoyed riding along the bike path to The
Dunes, said an excited Finn.

Plans are under way for the first BHCC trip to Adelaide
for the Tour Down Under. The BHCC love a committee,
so a sub-committee has been formed to organise this
eventful event. It's been put on the app, emails have
been sent, lots of 'reply-all-ing' and that's about it.
However, it will happen.
Damo, the expert on Adelaide has given us plenty of tips
for when we get there, and here are some of them...
Book early for the Bupa Challenge Tour ride if you are
going to do it
Visit 2KY bar (roof top bar on building corner of North
Terrace and King William street). I haven't been there
however supposed to be very good with awesome
views over Adelaide Oval up into North Adelaide
If having dinner at Willunga, book & eat at Russell's
Pizza (I think this is BYO)
Have afternoon beers at Star of Greece at Port
Willunga (awesome views that make you think you are
in Europe)
Have a Farmers Union iced coffee
Go to a butcher and ask for fritz (that's not his name,
it's processed meat)
When talking to a local find out if they are a Port or
Crows fan early on in the conversation and don't
mention the other team
Don't mention the Grand Prix (they are still angry that
Melbourne stole it)
If you are looking for a surf, don't go to Glenelg
Make sure you ask people to darnce, not dance,
speak to Grarnt, not Grant
If you are in Hindley Street after midnight, you have
somehow stumbled into and joined a buck's party, 21st
or some other event that may ultimately place strains on
your marriage.

BHCC Christmas Party

The date has been set and plans are underway for the
biggest event on our cycling calendar. The annual
Christmas Party is where BHCC members and families
ride from venue to venue and eat lots of yummy food and
drink some cold lemonades. It usually starts late
afternoon and goes into the evening with lots of flashing
lights, bright clothes and not an item of Lycra to be seen.
I wonder if there will be a theme this year?
Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to
December (not long to go now).

Welcome Back
A few weeks ago, Griffo dusted off his bike, dug out his
Lycra and joined a few of us for a cruise to Breamlea late
on a Sunday afternoon. At the end of the ride, we
celebrated with a special coffee (see picture). Also,
welcome back to Wayne from his family trip OS. It will be
great to see him back on his steed and joining in with his
other family of BHCC riders.

Helmets
Yes, here he goes again. Banging on about helmets, I
hear you say. Well, a couple of weeks ago, Graeme had
a stack and came off his bike. He wasn't going too fast
(probably because he can't) but he did manage to ruin a

good set of knicks and his cycling jacket. Graeme also

ended up with a few bumps and bruises. The next day
after his caf latte, he was talking about the crash and
was disappointed that his new helmet had a little scratch
on it. On further inspection, Graeme noticed that his
helmet was totally cracked and broken and destined for
the rubbish bin (see picture). Thank goodness he was
wearing a helmet. As Graeme said.... Your helmet or
your head!
That's all our cycling news for this month.
Spring is here, the temperature is warming up and the
roads are drying out. The morning rides have been filled
with light, but it's now gone missing as daylight savings
begins. Not long until it lights up again.
Stay safe on your bike and remember to wear a helmet
and a bright top.

BARWON HEADS FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

With the 2016 football & netball season ending a little shortly for most of us, we can now all rest up enjoy the spring sun,
break out the Mowers and tend to the duties that we all ignore throughout the winter months. As we reflect the season past a
lot of positives have emerged from what appeared to be an injury plagued year of on field setbacks. Excuses aside this year has
seen the local youth hold their own amongst the senior opposition and place us in a fantastic position to tackle the 2017 season.
From a clubs perspective the years been a huge success. All our football and netball teams can hold their heads up high and we
thank you for representing our club.
2017 will see the changing of the guard in the senior coaching ranks, with Mitch Herbison and Bobby Wallace taking the helm,
excitement amongst the group has already started to build. We send an enormous thanks to James Garvey who will be stepping
down but Im sure he will around to lend a hand on game days. Other coaching positions appointed for next season are; Andrew
Philp coaching the Reserves, Sam Schaller the Colts and Johnny Read and Andy Walsgott taking on the U16 duties.
Our finals campaign was a mixed bag, the colts got knocked out of a chance to play in the Grand Final in a close game against
Werribee, the U16s also went down in a close semi-final against Torquay. However, the U14 side took home the chocolates to win
the division 4 Grand Final beating Belmont in convincing fashion. Well done to all players and coaches for their outstanding efforts.
To all the committees, supporters, sponsors, organisers, volunteers, players and coaches a huge thank you for season 2016. No
matter what the results are on the field or court it is always a pleasure to be a part of such a great club and well be back bigger and
better next year.
2017 should see some changes happening around the club with the election commitment money being distributed across both the
football and netball sites, the oval will be giving a new surface, with the netball courts they will start to take shape with new side line shelters, a new office and court
widening and resurfacing. The BHFNC / Barwon Coast master plan has nearly been completed with the anticipation of more improvements to come.
Special mention to our Life Member recipient this year Tim Peter. Gypa has been an integral part of the Barwon Heads Football & Netball Club and has worn many
hats since he first started helping out at Auskick in 1998. A truly dedicated club person and all round ripper bloke, well done Gyp.
