Introduction

Clariant is one of the worlds leading manufacturers of surfactants and auxiliaries.

Clariant is a global leader in the field of speciality chemicals. The Functional Chemicals Division
serves a wide range of industries e.g. Personal Care, Coating and Construction, Detergents and
Oil, Gas and the Mining industry. For Metal Working Clariant supplies:
< corrosion inhibitors
< emulsifiers
< lubricants
< cleaners

< defoamers
< dewatering fluids
< biocides
< ep / aw- additives

The base materials for these surfactants and raw materials are from both renewable and
petrochemical sources. What is common to all products is their high quality standard, which
is achieved through intensive research and development, modern production methods with
constant quality monitoring and customer-oriented applications technology, and this standard
is continuously improved.
Over and above the product range, we offer assistance to find specific solutions to solve
problems, either through advice or through related development work in the laboratory.
Biocides
For EEC (Europe):
Based on our information (status April 2008) all mentioned biocides are in compliance with the
BPD 98/8/EC and amendments/corrections. This information is based on the current situation and
Clariant reserves the right to modify the support if the data requirements change or the market
position alters.

REACH
According to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH), the manufacture or import of chemical
substances in volumes exceeding 1 ton per year must be registered at the European Chemicals
Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki. REACH registration is related to substances and not products, e.g.
preparations/formulations of substances. Production, import and marketing of a REACH-substance
will be restricted to those uses evaluated in its registration dossier.
The REACH process starts with preregistration (1st June 2008 until 1st December 2008), which
assures the availability of preregistered substances to the registration date. The date of registration
depends on the production volume of the substance and lies between 2010 and 2018.
We confirm that we will pre-register all substances manufactured by Clariant Division FUN in the
EU or imported in the EU, which are relevant for the products listed in this brochure. However,
no promise can be given that Clariant will offer all listed products over the 11 year phase of the
REACH implementation. If REACH registration requires unacceptable costs, Clariant will contact its
customers to find an appropriate solution.

Hostacor L, Emulsogen 5126 MW and Emulsogen

5690 are soluble in mineral oils and insoluble in
water. They have to be converted to the corresponding alkali and / or amine / alkanolamine salts
by hydrolysis when used in water based metal
working fluids.
In this form they are stabilizing emulsions and are
used as hydrotropes (coupling agents). Contrary
to Emulsogen 5126 and Emulsogen 5690, Hostacor
L has pronounced wetting properties but is not
stable against water hardness.

Hostacor L shows good corrosion protection as

alkali and / or alkanolamine salt. Hostacor L may
become turbid after prolonged storage. The product gets clear again after homogenizing at 70C.

8.2 9.2

Hostacor 3928 is used as emulsifier with corrosion

protecting properties for milky / transparent
metalworking fluids. The product is clearly soluble
in water, dispersible in mineral oils and compatible
with non / anionic products. Mineral oil based
formulations show no gelation tendency, form
spontaneously emulsions and are stable in hard
water.

Storage stability is max. 1 year.

Storage temperature should be below 30C.

Hostacor 3981

Alkenyl succinic imido carboxylic

acid / anionic as salt

dark brown,

Hostacor 3981 is insoluble in water and slightly

turbid dispersible in mineral oil. Product should be
stored in a cool place.

Hostacor 4221

Alkenyl succinic imido carboxylic

acid / anionic as salt

brownish,
clear,
viscous liquid

Hostacor 3981 and 4221 are used as emulsifiers

with corrosion protecting properties for milky /
transparent metalworking fluids.
The free acids must be neutralized to the alkali
and / or alkanolamine salts. Mineral oil based
formulations show no gelation tendency, form
spontaneously emulsions and are stable in hard
water. Both products are compatible with other
non / anionic additives. Hostacor 4221 is suitable
for formulations with low pH values (approx. 8).

Hostacor 4323

Alkenyl succinic acid half ester /

anionic as salt

light brown,
clear,
viscous liquid

Hostacor 4323 is used as emulsifier with corrosion

protecting properties for milky amine and nitrogen
free metalworking fluids. The product is insoluble
in water and soluble in mineral oil. Mineral oil
based formulations show no gelation tendency,
form spontaneously emulsions and are stable in
hard water. The product is compatible with other
non / anionic additives.

During the neutralization, for instance with 50%

aqueous KOH, temperatures above 60C and a
local excess of alkali should be avoided. Storage
temperature should be below 30C.

Emulsogen 5126 MW is solubilized in mineral oil

due to its high viscosity (high molecular weight).
Emulsogen 5690 is solubilised in a synthetic ester
due to its high viscosity (high molecular weight)

Ether carboxylic acids are based on

fatty alcohol oxethylates and exhibit
the benefits of anionic and nonionic
emulsifiers, especially when they are
converted to their salt form, eg. after
neutralisation with alkanolamines.
Therefore, the Emulsogen C-types are
versatile formulating agents, providing
high emulsion stability over the complete
pH-range, tolerating high content of
electrolytes and are stable against water
hardness. In general they are easily
biodegradable, show low toxicity and
excellent skin compatibility.

Hostacor IS and Hostacor 2732 are insoluble in

water. Water soluble salts of Hostacor IS and
Hostacor 2732 are obtained by neutralization with
alkanolamines and hydroxides. They are used
alone or in combination with other water soluble
corrosion inhibitors or lubricants for cutting or
grinding fluids and in aqueous hydraulic fluids.
Hostacor IS and Hostacor 2732 are also suitable
for the formulation of aluminium working fluids. pH
value should be adjusted to approx. 8 to avoid
staining which is often observed at high pH values.

Hostacor IS is a raw material for manufacturing

water soluble corrosion inhibitors. Product must
be liquefied before use.

General aspects

Special remarks

Water soluble lubricants

Genapol B / PN 30 / PS are low foaming lubricants
for synthetic metal working fluids. They are stable
against water hardness. In combination with corrosion inhibitors like Hostacor IT or Hostacor BIT,
clear water soluble metalworking fluids with good
lubricating and corrosion protecting properties are
obtained.

Water solubility increases from Genapol PN 30,

Genapol B to Genapol PS. Depending on the
amounts of boric acid esters, corrosion inhibitors
and solubilizing agents, the Genapol type of adequate solubility has to be selected to obtain stable
and clear concentrates resp. synthetic metal working fluids. Genapol PN 30 and Genapol B do not
contain free ethylene diamine.

Detergent Regulation EC 648/2004 and EC 907/2006

According to the Detergent Regulation Surfactants used in detergents (cleaners etc.) have to
show an ultimate biodegradation above given minimum limits according to EC648/2004. The determination methods, minimum ultimate biodegradation limits and test report quality requirements are
provided by the regulation. Producers state the compliance with the EU Detergent Regulation with
phrases in the EU safety data sheet (EU-SDS) Chapter 12 or 15.
Products with a compliance phrase in the EU-SDS show in the column remarks the abbreviation:
"DR +".
