radar.
The Chilean Army revealed to the UFO community classified material regarding
recordings and encounters between the military and UFOs over the past 30 years,
accordingtotheElMercurionewspaper.
The evidence was presented at the 10th International UFO Congress, highlighting the

display of a video that captures a UFO

pursuitbysurfacevesselsandhelicopters
of the Chilean Navy seven years ago,
accordingtoRodrigoFuenzalida,director
of the Agrupacio de Investigaciones
Ovnilogicas(AION).
AnotherpursuittookplaceonMarch27,
2000 when a Citation2 military aircraft
crossed an unidentified flying object,
measuring 40 meters in length, at an
altitude of 1000 meters and 100
kilometersawayfromtheChileancapital.
DisclosureofthisinformationwasauthorizedbyOscarIzurieta,CommanderinChiefof
the Armed Forces, and forms part of an official investigation undertaken by Rodrigo
Bravo, captain of the Army's 5th Division, who participates in the congress, which was
heldattheViadelMarresort120kilometersdistantfromSantiagodeChile.
Themilitaryphotographsandvideosincludedaphotographofasphericalmetallicobject
capturedflyingoverAntarcticaandavideoofNavyshipsbeingpursuedbyaluminous
objectin2000.
Captain Bravo talked to a rapt audience about his thesis, entitled "Observations of
unidentifiedaerialphenomenaidentifiedbytheCivilAirForce."WhileBravostalkwas
not technically representative of the institutions position on UFOs, he had been
authorizedtogiveitbyhiscommanderinchief.
"Captain Bravo gave his talk from the point of view of the importance of UFOs as a
phenomenon," said Fuenzalida. "He talked about encounters such as that of three
helicopters near La Unin, when a UFO was spotted parked on the ground, and what
happenedin2000,whenfivepeoplewerepursuedbyaluminousobjectthatdidnotshow
uponradarscreens."
Fuenzalidadeniedtheexistenceof"secretinvestigations"beingcarriedoutbytheArmed
Forcesaboutextraterrestrialactivity.
AlsopresentattheconferencewasretiredofficialArmandoValds,whoisnotedforhis
involvementinoneofChilesfirstdocumentedUFOabductions,whichbecameknownas
theValdsCase.OnApril25,1977,Valds,alongwithfivemembersofanarmypatrol,
sawtwobrightobjectsdescendingfromthesky.Valdssetoutalonetoinvestigateand,
according to the men, simply vanished. Fifteen minutes later, they said, he reappeared,
triedtospeakandpassedout.Thedateonhiswatchhadbeenadvancedfivedays,andhe
hadaboutaweek'sgrowthofbeard.
Accordingtohiscomrades,whenValdeswasbeginningtoregainconsciousnesshesaid:
"Youdonotknowwhoweare,norwherewecomefrom.ButItellyouthatwewillsoon
return."

APrincetonLabonESPPlanstoCloseItsDoors
Over almost three decades, a small
laboratory at Princeton University
managed to embarrass university
administrators, outrage Nobel laureates,
entice the support of philanthropists and
makeheadlinesaroundtheworldwithits
effortstoprovethatthoughtscanalterthe
courseofevents.
Butattheendofthemonth,thePrinceton
Engineering
Anomalies
Research
laboratory,orPEAR,willclose,notbecauseofcontroversybutbecause,itsfoundersays,
itistime.
Thelaboratoryhasconductedstudiesonextrasensoryperceptionandtelekinesisfromits
crampedquartersinthebasementoftheuniversitysengineeringbuildingsince1979.Its
equipmentisaging,itsfinancesdwindling.
For 28 years, weve done what we wanted to do, and theres no reason to stay and
generatemoreofthesamedata,saidthelaboratorysfounder,RobertG.Jahn,76,former
deanofPrincetonsengineeringschoolandanemeritusprofessor.Ifpeopledontbelieve
usafteralltheresultsweveproduced,thentheyneverwill.
Princetonmadenoofficialcomment.
The closing will end one of the strangest tales in modern science, or science fiction,
dependingononespointofview.Thelaboratoryhaslonghadastrainedrelationshipwith
theuniversity.Manyscientistshavebeenopenlydismissiveofit.
Itsbeenanembarrassmenttoscience,andIthinkanembarrassmentforPrinceton,said
RobertL.Park,aUniversityofMarylandphysicistwhoistheauthorofVoodooScience:
TheRoadFromFoolishnesstoFraud.Sciencehasasubstantialamountofcredibility,
butthisisthekindofthingthatsquandersit.
PEAR has been an anomaly from the start, a ghost in the machine room of physical
science that was never acknowledged as substantial and yet never entirely banished. Its
longevityillustratesthestrengthandlimitationsofscientificpeerreview,theprocessby
whichresearchersappraiseoneanotherswork.
We know people have ideas beyond the mainstream, said the sociologist Harriet
Zuckerman,authorofScientificElite:NobelLaureatesintheUnitedStatesandsenior
vicepresidentoftheAndrewW.MellonFoundation,butiftheywantfundsforresearch
theyhavetogothroughpeerreview,andthesystemisgoingtobeveryskepticalofideas
thatareinconsistentwithwhatisalreadyknown.
Dr. Jahn, one of the worlds foremost experts on jet propulsion, defied the system. He
reliednotonuniversityorgovernmentmoneybutonprivatedonationsmorethan$10
million over the years, he estimated. The first and most generous donor was his friend
JamesS.McDonnell,afounderoftheMcDonnellDouglasCorporation.
Thosegiftspaidforasmallstaffandagalleryofrandommotionmachines,includinga
pendulumwithalightedcrystalattheendagiant,wallmountedpachinkolikemachine

with a cascade of bouncing balls and a variety of electronic boxes with digital number
displays.
In one of PEARs standard experiments, the study participant would sit in front of an
electronicboxthesizeofatoasteroven,whichflashedarandomseriesofnumbersjust
aboveandjustbelow100.Staffmembersinstructedthepersontosimplythinkhighor
thinklowandwatchthedisplay.Afterthousandsofrepetitionstheequivalentofcoin
flipstheresearcherslookedfordifferencesbetweenthemachinesoutputandrandom
chance.
Analyzing data from such trials, the PEAR team concluded that people could alter the
behaviorofthesemachinesveryslightly,changingabout2or3flipsoutof10,000.Ifthe
human mind could alter the behavior of such a machine, Dr. Jahn argued, then thought
could bring about changes in many other areas of life helping to heal disease, for
instance,inoneselfandothers.
Thiskindoftalkfascinatedthepublicandattractedthecuriosityofdozensofstudents,at
Princetonandelsewhere.Butitleftmostscientistscold.AphysicsPh.D.andanelectrical
engineerjoinedDr.Jahnsproject,butnoneoftheuniversitys700orsoprofessorsdid.
ProminentresearchjournalsdeclinedtoacceptpapersfromPEAR.Oneeditorfamously
toldDr.Jahnthathewouldconsiderapaperifyoucantelepathicallycommunicateitto
me.
BrendaDunne,adevelopmentalpsychologist,hasmanagedthelaboratorysinceitopened
andhasbeenacoauthorofmanyofitsstudypapers.Wesubmittedourdataforreview
toverygoodjournals,Ms.Dunnesaid,butnoonewouldreviewit.Wehavebeenvery
openwithourdata.Buthowdoyougetpeerreviewwhenyoudonthavepeers?
SeveralexpertpanelsexaminedPEARsmethodsovertheyears,lookingforirregularities,
butdidnotfindsufficientreasonstointerruptthework.Inthe1980sand1990s,PEAR
publishedmorethan60researchreports,mostappearinginthejournaloftheSocietyfor
Scientific Exploration, a group devoted to the study of topics outside the scientific
mainstream.Dr.JahnandMs.Dunneareofficersinthesociety.
News of the Princeton groups experiments spread quickly worldwide, among people
interested in paranormal phenomena, including telekinesis and what people call
extrasensoryperception.NotablefiguresfromEuropeandAsiastoppedby..KeithJarrett,
the jazz pianist, paid a visit. For a time, the philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller visited
regularlyanddonatedmoneyforresearch.
Andmanypeople,inandoutofscience,joinedwhatMs.DunnecalledthePEARTree,a
kindofsecretsocietyofpeopleinterestedintheparanormal,shesaid.ManyPEARTree
members who are science faculty members will not reveal themselves publicly, Ms.
Dunnesaid.
The culture of science, at its purest, is one of freedom in which any idea can be tested
regardlessofhowfarfetcheditmightseem.
I dont believe in anything Bob is doing, but I support his right to do it, said Will
Happer,aprofessorofphysicsatPrinceton.
Othertopflightscientistshavetakenchances.Attheendofhiscareer,LinusPauling,the
Nobel laureate, came to believe that vitamin C supplements could prevent and treat
cancer,heartdiseaseandotherailments.Dr.Paulinghadsomeoutsidefinancing,too,and

conducted research and had plenty of media coverage. But in the end he did not sway
manyofhiscolleagues,Dr.Zuckermansaid.
AtthePEARofficesthisweek,thestaffworkedamidboxes,pilesofpaperandarollof
bubblewrapasbigasanoildrum.Therandomeventmachinesareheadedforstorage.
Thestudyoftelekinesisandrelatedphenomena,Dr.Jahnsaid,willcarryon.
Itstimeforanewera,hesaid,forsomeonetofigureoutwhattheimplicationsofour
resultsareforhumanculture,forfuturestudy,andifthefindingsarecorrectwhat
theysayaboutourbasicscientificattitude.

A team of worldleading neuroscientists has

developed a powerful technique that allows
them to look deep inside a person's brain and
readtheirintentionsbeforetheyact.
The research breaks controversial new ground
inscientists'abilitytoprobepeople'smindsand
eavesdropontheirthoughts,andraisesserious
ethical issues over how brainreading
technologymaybeusedinthefuture.
The team used highresolution brain scans to identify patterns of activity before
translatingthemintomeaningfulthoughts,revealingwhatapersonplannedtodointhe
nearfuture.Itisthefirsttimescientistshavesucceededinreadingintentionsinthisway.
"Using the scanner, we could look around the brain for this information and read out
somethingthatfromtheoutsidethere'snowayyoucouldpossiblytellisinthere.It'slike
shiningatorcharound,lookingforwritingonawall,"saidJohnDylanHaynesattheMax
PlanckInstituteforHumanCognitiveandBrainSciencesinGermany,wholedthestudy
withcolleaguesatUniversityCollegeLondonandOxfordUniversity.
Theresearchbuildsonaseriesofrecentstudiesinwhichbrainimaginghasbeenusedto
identifytelltaleactivitylinkedtolying,violentbehaviourandracialprejudice.
Thelatestworkrevealsthedramaticpaceatwhichneuroscienceisprogressing,prompting
theresearcherstocallforanurgentdebateintotheethicalissuessurroundingfutureuses
for the technology. If brainreading can be refined, it could quickly be adopted to assist

interrogations of criminals and terrorists, and even usher in a "Minority Report" era (as
portrayedintheStevenSpielbergsciencefictionfilmofthatname),wherejudgmentsare
handeddownbeforethelawisbrokenonthestrengthofanincriminatingbrainscan.
"Thesetechniquesareemergingandweneedanethicaldebateabouttheimplications,so
thatonedaywe'renotsurprisedandoverwhelmedandcaughtonthewrongfootbywhat
they can do. These things are going to come to us in the next few years and we should
reallybeprepared,"ProfessorHaynestoldtheGuardian.
The use of brain scanners to judge whether people are likely to commit crimes is a
contentiousissuethatsocietyshouldtacklenow,accordingtoProfHaynes."Weseethe
danger that this might become compulsory one day, but we have to be aware that if we
prohibit it, we are also denying people who aren't going to commit any crime the
possibilityofprovingtheirinnocence."
During the study, the researchers asked volunteers to decide whether to add or subtract
twonumberstheywerelatershownonascreen.
Before the numbers flashed up, they were given a brain scan using a technique called
functional magnetic imaging resonance. The researchers then used a software that had
beendesignedtospotsubtledifferencesinbrainactivitytopredicttheperson'sintentions
with70%accuracy.
The study revealed signatures of activity in a marblesized part of the brain called the
medial prefrontal cortex that changed when a person intended to add the numbers or
subtractthem.
Because brains differ so much, the scientists need a good idea of what a person's brain
activity looks like when they are thinking something to be able to spot it in a scan, but
researchers are already devising ways of deducing what patterns are associated with
differentthoughts.
Barbara Sahakian, a professor of neuropsychology at Cambridge University, said the
rapid advances in neuroscience had forced scientists in the field to set up their own
neuroethicssocietylatelastyeartoconsidertheramificationsoftheirresearch.
"Do we want to become a 'Minority Report' society where we're preventing crimes that
mightnothappen?,"sheasked."Forsomeofthesetechniques,it'sjustamatteroftime.It
is just another new technology that society has to come to terms with and use for the
good,butweshoulddiscussanddebateitnowbecausewhatwedon'twantisforittoleak
intouseincourtwillynillywithoutpeoplehavingthoughtabouttheconsequences.
"Alotofneuroscientistsinthefieldareverycautiousandsaywecan'ttalkaboutreading
individuals'minds,andrightnowthatisverytrue,butwe'removingaheadsorapidly,it's
notgoingtobethatlongbeforewewillbeabletotellwhethersomeone'smakingupa
story,orwhethersomeoneintendedtodoacrimewithacertaindegreeofcertainty."
Professor Colin Blakemore, a neuroscientist and director of the Medical Research
Council, said: "We shouldn't go overboard about the power of these techniques at the
moment,butwhatyoucanbeabsolutelysureofisthatthesewillcontinuetorolloutand
we will have more and more ability to probe people's intentions, minds, background
thoughts,hopesandemotions.
"Someofthatisextremelydesirable,becauseitwillhelpwithdiagnosis,educationandso

on, but we need to be thinking the ethical issues through. It adds a whole new gloss to
personalmedicaldataandhowitmightbeused."
Thetechnologycouldalsodriveadvancesinbraincontrolledcomputersandmachineryto
boostthequalityoflifefordisabledpeople.Beingabletoreadthoughtsastheyariseina
person'smindcouldleadtocomputersthatallowpeopletooperateemailandtheinternet
using thought alone, and write with word processors that can predict which word or
sentenceyouwanttotype.Thetechnologyisalsoexpectedtoleadtoimprovementsin
thoughtcontrolledwheelchairsandartificiallimbsthatrespondwhenapersonimagines
moving.
"Youcanimaginehowtediousitisifyouwanttowritealetterbyusingacursortopick
outlettersonascreen,"saidProfHaynes."Itwouldbemuchbetterifyouthought,'Iwant
to reply to this email', or, 'I'm thinking this word', and the computer can read that and
understandwhatyouwanttodo."

AstronautsExperienceswithUFOs
Unexplainedaerialphenomenahavebeen
reported over the years by many
intelligentandcrediblepeople,including
police officers, scientists, astronomers,
military personnel, pilots, and even
astronauts.
For instance, during the first American
orbitalflightinFebruary,1962,astronaut
John Glenn, piloting the Mercury
capsule, saw three objects follow and
then overtake him at varying speeds.
Glenn then observed what he called
glowing "snowflakes" or "fireflies" that
swirled around his capsule. NASA
officials surmised that the fireflies were
bitsoficethathadbecomedetachedfrom
thesidesofthecapsule.
LaterMercuryastronautsalsoreportedthesamephenomena,radioingbacktoNASAthat
more"fireflies"couldbeproducedwhentheytappedonthesideofthecapsule.
Threeyearslater,inJune,1965,astronautJamesMcDivittonGemini4photographedand
filmed a cylindricalshaped object with an antennalike extension. McDivitt said the
objectwassilveryinappearanceandwasapproximatelytenmilesaway."Itlookedlikea
beercanwithapencilstickingoutofitatanangle,"McDivittdescribed.
After splashdown, the film was sent from the carrier to be processed.When the NASA
photo interpreter released three or four pictures of the UFO, a few days later, McDivitt
statedthatthequalityofthephotowassobadthatitfailedtoreproducewhathehadseen.

NORADsuggestedthattheobjectmighthavebeenasatellitecalledPegasuswhichwas
1,200milesawayatthetime,eventhoughtheobjectMcDivitthadsightedappearedtobe
muchcloser.
Then during December's Gemini 7 flight, astronauts Jim Lovell and Frank Borman
radioed Mission Control that they had a "bogey" in sight as well as many illuminated
particles. NASA suggested that the bogey and particles were fragments from the
launching of Gemini 7, but this is impossible if they were traveling in a different orbit
fromGemini7,astheastronautsdescribed.

In1966,duringtheflightofGemini10,tworedglowingobjectscapturedtheattentionof
astronautsJohnYoungandMichaelCollinsastheycircledtheEarth.Theyhadventured
further into space than any other human at the time, and suddenly both astronauts were
amazedtoseethattwoglowingobjectsnowoccupiedthesameorbitalpathasthemselves.
The official verdict attributed the objects to space junk discarded from an unmanned
Saturnrocketthathadbeenlaunchedearlierthatmonth.Buttheastronautswereadamant
thesewerenotstarsanditisdifficulttoimaginehowamanmadedevicecouldmaneuver
intheerraticwaytheobjectsdidwhentheysuddenlyleftorbitandquicklydisappeared
fromsight.
CodeWordSantaClaus
BecauseoftheunwantedmediaattentiongeneratedbytheGeminiUFOreports,NASA
instructed its astronauts to never use words such as "bogey" or "UFO" if they sighted
something unidentified. Instead, they were to use the codeword "Santa Claus" when
informing Mission Control of unusual activity around their capsules. Additionally,
Mission Control stopped allowing the networks to hear live broadcasts from the
astronauts. Instead, they initiated a fivesecond tape delay, possibly to quickly prevent
astronautsfromaccidentallybroadcastinganyunexpectedUFOencounters.
ThisedictcamejustintimefortheApollomissionstothemoon,wherebothastronauts
Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin supposedly saw UFOs shortly after their historic
landingonthemooninJuly,1969.
According to former NASA employee Otto Binder, unnamed radio hams who bypassed
NASA'sbroadcastingoutletspickedupthismessagefromApollo11:"Thesebabiesare
huge sir...enormous...oh, God, you wouldn't believe it! I'm telling you there are other
spacecraft out there...lined up on the far side of the crater edge...they're on the moon
watchingus."

ThesestorieswererepeatedinvariousUFOmagazines,butitwasnotverifieduntil1979,
whenMauriceChatelain,seniorengineerforNASAcontractorNorthAmericanAviation,
confirmedthatArmstronghadindeedreportedseeingtwoUFOsontherimofacrater.
"TheencounterwascommonknowledgeinNASA.Infact,allApolloandGeminiflights
werefollowedbyspacevehiclesofunknownorigin.Everytimeitoccurred,theastronauts
informedMissionControl,whothenorderedabsolutesilence."
The late astronaut Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper Jr. said in 2000 that the government

One reason why Cooper was so insistent that UFOs are real was his own personal
sightingsinthe1950swhileassignedtoajetfightergroupinGermany.Whilestationed

therein1952,formationsofmetalliclookingcircularobjectspassedovertheAirBaseon
analmostdailybasis.
UFOscontinuedtohauntCooperwhenhewastransferredseveralyearslatertoEdwards
AirForceBaseFlightTestCenterintheCaliforniadesert.In1957,hewasoneofanelite
bandoftestpilotsinchargeofseveraladvancedprojects,includingtheinstallationofa
precision landing system. He had a camera crew filming the installation when they
spottedaflyingsaucer.Theyfilmeditasitflewoverhead,thenhovered,extendedthree
legsaslandinggear,andslowlycamedowntolandonadrylakebed.
Thecameracrewmanagedtogetwithin20or30yardsofthelandeddisc,filmingallthe
time.Itwasaclassicsaucer,shinysilverandsmooth,andabout30feetacross.Asthey
approached,ittookoffanddisappearedintotheclearsky.
AfterthefootagewasforwardedtoWashington,themovie"vanished,"nevertosurface
again. When the Air Force later started Operation Blue Book in 1952 to collate UFO
evidence and reports, Cooper says he mentioned the film evidence, but the film was
supposedlyneverfound.

RumorspersistthatAmericanastronautsandRussiancosmonautscontinuetoseeUFOs
whileinspace.AsmanyofNASA'sprogramsarefundedbytheDepartmentofDefense,
mostastronautsaresubjecttomilitarysecurityregulationsandareforbiddentopublicly
speakabouttheirsightings.
Hopefully,astimegoesbyandmoreastronautsretire,theywillchoosetopubliclydiscuss
theirUFOencounters.Onlythenwillthepublicgetabetterideaofthekindsofstrange
mysteriesthatawaitusinthedeep,darkreachesofouterspace.

AncientChimps"UsedStoneTools"
Chimpanzees in West Africa used stone
tools to crack nuts 4,300 years ago. The
discovery represents the oldest evidence
of tool use by our closest evolutionary
relative.
The first prehistoric evidence for a
"chimpanzee stone age" has been
uncovered by archaeologists working in
an African rainforest. Primitive stone
hammers and anvils dating from 4,300
years ago were excavated from pits at
three sites in the Ta national park in
IvoryCoast.
The tools, used to crush and crack food, are too large for humans to have wielded with
ease, and showed traces of starch from varieties of nuts that were staples of the chimp
diet,butavoidedbyhumans.
Theskillcouldhavebeeninheritedfromacommonancestorofchimpsandhumans,the

authorssay,orlearntfromhumansbyimitation.
Alternatively, humans and chimps may have developed tool use independently, the
ProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciencesjournalreports.
Chimpanzeeswerefirstobservedusingstonetoolsinthe19thcentury.
Julio Mercader from the University of Calgary and colleagues found stone tools at the
Noulo site in Ivory Coast, the only known prehistoric chimpanzee settlement. The
excavatedstonesshowedthehallmarksofuseastoolsforsmashingnutswhencompared
withancienthumanormodernchimpanzeestonetools.
"Chimpanzeematerialculturehasalongprehistorywhosedeeprootsareonlybeginning
tobeuncovered,"writetheresearchersinProceedings.
Thediscoverysuggeststhatfromancienttimeschimpanzeesusedrudimentarytechnology
andhandedtheskillsdowntolatergenerations.Thefloodplainwherethestonefragments
wereuncoveredwasnotwidelyoccupiedbyhumansatthetime,leadingtheresearchers
tosuspectthatearlytoolusewasnotlearnedfromhumans,butmayhavebeenpassedon
tochimpsandhumansalikefromamoreprimitiveancestor.
"It'snotclearwhetherweinventedthiskindofstonetechnology,orwhetherbothhumans
andgreatapesinheriteditfromacommonforebear,"saidMercader."Thereweren'tany
farmerslivinginthisregion4,300yearsago,soit'sunlikelythechimpanzeespickeditup
byimitatingvillagers."
He added: "We used to think that culture and, above anything else, technology was the
exclusivedomainofhumans,butthisisnotthecase."
Theageofthetoolswasdeterminedbysubjectingcharcoalfromthesamegroundlayers
tothetechniqueofradiocarbondating.
HuwBarton,acoauthoronthestudyatLeicesterUniversity,saidthefindingraisedthe
tantalisingsuggestionthattooluseamongchimpanzeesmayhaveprogressed,atleastfor
awhile,inparallelwithhumanusage.
"At the moment, we know for chimpanzees tool use goes back at least 4,300 years, but
whatifitgoesbackmuchfurther?Whoknowswhatwe'dfind."

BlackDogsandUFOs
Threeweeksagoafascinatingstorywasrelatedtomebyacolleaguefrommyoldhome
county of Staffordshire, England. Youre not going to believe this one, he told me
excitedly down the phone. Well, Ive heard some bizarre things in my time as an
investigator of allthings weird, and so I sat back and listened to his story that was
providedtohimbythepersondirectlyinvolved.
Essentially,thestorycentersupona1991encounterwiththeunknownataplacecalled
CastleRing,whichat801feetabovesealevelisthehighestpointonalargeareaofforest

in central England called the Cannock Chase. A

plateau bordered by the Trent Valley to the north
and the West Midlands to the south, the Chase is
situated only several miles from where I grew up
and it is a beautiful, expansive area full of dense
woods,avarietyofwildanimals,andmagicaltales
ofmysteryandwonder.
Indeed, the area has a rich and long history of
reportedencounterswithBigfoot,UFOs,ghosts,big
cats and even the occasional wallaby. It has also
been the site of a number of disturbing animal
mutilations that have been linked with occult
activities.
Builtbetween500BCandAD40,CastleRingisan
IronAgestructurecommonlyknownasaHillFort.
Its main ditch and bank enclosure is 14 feet high
and, at its widest point, is 853 feet across. Little is known about the people who built
CastleRingoritspurpose,excepttosaythatitscreatorswerealreadyinresidenceatthe
timeoftheRomaninvasionandremainedthereuntilaroundAD50.
Butbacktothestory,whichinvolvesahistorianandfolkloristwholivesintheEnglish
cityofLichfield.Itisthehistoriansbeliefthatalloftheweirdactivitythathasoccurred
ontheCannockChasewhetheritbeencountersoftheallegedBigfootkindorETkind
isadirectresultofpeopledabblinginarchaicritualsandritesdesignedtoconjureupthe
denizensofsomenetherworldthatcoexistswithours.
Such claims are not new, and having experienced more than a bit of highstrangeness
myself on the Cannock Chase, I am highly inclined to believe that such a scenario is
indeed the correct one. And it seems that the historian has good reasons for coming to
suchconclusions.
ItwasDecember1991,around10.00AMonacoldwintermorning,andthehistorianwas
walkingaroundtheCastleRing,takingphotographs,whenhisattentionwasdrawntoa
small,denseandhoveringareaoffogsituatedatadistanceofabout250to300feet.
Curious as to what would cause such a phenomenon, he headed towards it, with some
trepidation,headmitted.Ashegotwithinabout20feetofthefog,hefelthishairbecome
staticandelectrified,andanintensesmellofburningmetalfilledtheair:brimstone,no
less.
But the bizarre activity had barely begun: suddenly, out of the fog loomed a large, and
certainlymonstrous,blackdog.Accordingtothehistorian,thedoglookedinappearance
likeacrossbetweenanAlsatian(or,forAmericanreaders,aGermanShepherd)andaPit
Bull,butwasaroundthesizeofayounghorse.Themandetectedanairofmenacefrom
the creature, which, he said, seemed to be vibrating at a very high speed, like shaking
impossiblyquickly.Itpositivelyoozedmenace,andstampeditslegonthegroundlikea
bullwouldwhenitsgettingreadytocharge.
The man slowly backed away, and the black dog did likewise, retreating into the
impenetrabledepthsofthefog.Asthemanreachedapointperhaps150feetfromthefog,
hewasbothstartledandshockedtoseeasmallballoflightzoominoverthefogand
dulycastdownavividbluecolumnoflightinitsdirection.Inaninstant,thefogandthe
ball of light were gone, the black dog was nowhere to be seen, and normality was

restored.
So,wemightwellask:whatonearthwasallthatabout?Well,Britainhasalonghistory
and tradition of encounters with such black dogs. In centuries past they plagued the
countryside,andtoseeonewasconsideredanillomen,indeed.Death,disasteranduntold
tragedywereallsaidtofollowanencounterwiththesespectralbeasts.Withnameslike
OldShuck,BlackShuck,andtheShugMonkey,theystruckterrorintotheheartsofthe
peopleofBritainduringtheMiddleAges.Occasionallyandcuriously,however,theblack
dogs would act as guides for lost souls, directing them back to the safety of ancient
pathwaysandroads,ordirectthemawayfromdanger.Butwhatevertheywere,theblack
dogswerecertainlynothingnormal.
Today,encounterswithsuchcreaturesarereportedveryinfrequently,buttheydooccur
suchasthisoneattheCastleRingin1991.Then,ofcourse,wehavethestrange,aerial
balloflightpresentattheRing,thataddssignificantUFOovertonestothestory.Canthe
wholeweirdsagaberesolved?Thehistorianbelievesitcan.
Indeed,heisofthefirmopinionthatancientmanwhocertainlyconstructedtheCastle
Ringhadmentalabilitiesthatextendedfarbeyondourown,andwasabletoessentially
tapintootherrealmsofexistence,andconstructfromthemindimagesofbizarreand
monstrousbeaststhatinhabitedthosesamerealms.
Thepurpose?Toactasguardianstopreventanyharmbeingdonetotheareasthatancient
man deemed to be of spiritual significance. It is the historians belief that some of the
residualenergythatledtothecreationofthesewildimagesisstillinplaceatCastleRing
andelsewhereandthatwhenthetimeisright,theywillonceagainmanifestandtakeup
theirroleasbothguardianandprotectoroftheoldworld.
I had come to similar conclusions myself a number of years ago. Of course, this raises
deepandimportantquestionsaboutbothUfologyandCryptozoology,suchas:howmany
ofthestillelusivethingsthatwepursuearefleshandbloodentities,andhowmanymay
inrealityoriginateinrealmsfarstrangerthanwecanpossiblyimagine?Certainly,the
Cannock Chase has been the site of a number of Bigfootstyle encounters that have
distinctlyparanormalaspectstothem,andthathaveoccurredintheexactsamelocations
wheresignificantUFOactivityhasalsobeenreported.
Needless to say, such observations have been made for decades by authorities such as
John Keel. But, as this case serves to emphasize, whoever was responsible for those
centuriesoldreportsofghostlyblackdogs,theywerestilluptotheirbizarretricksdeepin
theheartofCastleRingonly16yearsago.
Nexttimeyouvisitaprehistoricsite,keeponeeyeontheskyandoneontheground.If
yourelucky,youmayseesomethingfarstrangerthanmereancient,standingstones
