100 evacuated
as fire breaks
out at Jackson
senior complex
STEVEN FALK @SMFALK

JACKSON - A fire Sunday morning at the Bella Terra

assisted living complex at 2 Kathleen Drive resulted in
approximately 100 people being evacuated to Jackson
Liberty High School, township Police Chief Matthew
Kunz said.
Mayor Michael Reina said the fire broke out about
7:20 in the D wing of the facility and resulted in the
evacuation of 44 rooms. More than 30 people living in
that wing were taken to Jackson Liberty for temporary
shelter.
The only thing I know is that the fire was in the attic
area above the third floor. It might have been initiated
in a heating, air conditioning unit and spread out into
the attic area, Kunz said late Sunday morning at Jackson Liberty as the evacuees were being transported
into the high school. The sprinkler systems were activated, as a result of the heat and the fire causing extensive water damage on that side of the building.
Both Kunz and Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastronardy said the high school was being used as a temporary staging area for the evacuees.
Kunz said: There were no injuries, but because of
the fire and water damage, there had to be an evacuation of the building so the Building Department and inspections could get in and take an assessment as to what
was damaged or if it (Bella Terra) could be rehabitated.
Thats going to be an all-day process.
Denise Olejarz, deputy coordinator for the Jackson
Office of Emergency Management, said Sunday afternoon that some of the evacuees had either gone home
with family members or been transported back to Bella
Terra.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump speaks as Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton listens at Sundays debate.

BOB JORDAN @BOBJORDANAPP

Capping the most stunning weekend of a bizarre

political year, Republican nominee Donald Trump
tried to save his campaign Sunday night in the second
presidential debate with Democrat Hillary Clinton
by attacking her husband, former President Bill Clinton, over allegations about his sexual conduct.
Trump tipped his hand by holding a pre-debate
event with three women who have accused Bill Clinton of rape or sexual harassment. Trumps campaign
has been in turmoil following the Friday release of a
recording from 2005 in which he is heard graphically
discussing groping women.
Trump, at the debate at Washington University in
St. Louis, said he was sorry for the recorded comments, but Clinton said it was another case of why
Trump lacks the fitness to serve as president.
Donald Trump is different. I said starting back in
June that he was not fit to be president and commander-in-chief. And many Republicans and independents
have said the same thing. What we all saw and heard

ATLANTIC CITY - For years in this seaside gambling resort, Donald Trumps name and face seemed
to be everywhere in neon letters across the facades
of three casinos, on billboards, and in ads on the side
of shuttle buses.
But the man who is now the Republican presidential nominee has been mostly gone from Atlantic City
since 2009, when a well-publicized decline was starting its third year. And early Monday, the last vestige

of Donald J. Trump will vanish from Atlantic City

when the new owner of the Trump Taj Mahal casino
shuts it down.
Atlantic City was a great period for me, Trump
told The Associated Press in an interview last week.
Those were good years, before you had all the competition and all the problems. I had a 10-year stint that
was unbelievable.

Incredible journey
of memorial notes
found in a bottle

CARINOS CORNER
SOMERS POINT - The letter arrived
in the newsroom a few weeks ago. It was
dated Sept. 12.
A daily newspaper gets a lot of mail,
but I doubt weve ever received one like
this.
Many years ago, my husband found a
bottle floating in the back bay off of Island Beach State Park with a note inside, Toms River
resident Nancy Skopas wrote. With the 15-year anniversary of 9/11 just passing, I felt I needed to release
this note from my care. It has haunted me for years.
Skopas enclosed the notes the bottle contained
two of them in her mailing to the Press. They were
written in 2005 and 2006 by a woman whose boyfriend
had perished in the twin towers.
I believe you will make the right judgment call on
whether to pursue this, Skopas concluded.
On Friday, after weeks of piecing the backstory together, I arrived at the 15th annual Bill Kelly Jr. Memorial Golf Classic to do something rare return a message in a bottle to its sender.
