Albom, M. 1997. Tuesdays with Morrie: an old man, a young man, and life's greatest lesson. 224. A true
story about a man and his mentor as the old man lies dying from a terminal illness.
Alexander, W. 2010. 52 loaves: one man's relentless pursuit of truth, meaning, and a perfect crust. 339. A
book about a quest to bake the perfect loaf of bread.
Ambrose, jr. S. 1996. Undaunted journey. A detailed examinatin of the excursion of Lewis and Clark.
Excellent coverage of pre, during, and after trip.
Bobrick, B. 2001. Wide as the waters: the story of the English Bible and the revolution it inspired. Simon
& Schuster. 379. The story of the translation of the bible from Hebrew and Greek into English and
the history of England as influenced by it
Burke, J.L. 1996. Cadillac Jubilee. A novel about a small town sherrif who runs a bait shop outside New
Orleans. Gets involved in serious crime.
Cornwell, B. 2003. Heretic. Harper Collins, 435 pp. Very good. 1347 and an English archer goes to the
south of France to look for the holy grail. PB. History, adventure, religion
Delaney, F. 2005. Ireland. Harper Collins. 559. A historical novel of Ireland told through stories by a
traveling storyteller and others. Stories run from 600 ad to 1800's.
Delaney, F. 2009. Shannon: A novel. 416. In the summer of 1922, Robert Shannon, a Marine chaplain and a
young American hero of the Great War, lands in Ireland. He still suffers from shell shock, and his
mentor hopes that a journey Robert had always wanted to maketo find his family roots along the
banks of the River Shannonwill restore his equilibrium and his vocation. But there is more to the
story: On his return from the war, Robert had witnessed startling corruption in the Archdiocese of
Boston. He has been sent to Ireland to secure his silencepermanently. As Robert faces the dangers

travels of David Livingstone and the rescue mission of Henry Stanley to Africa.
Eckert, A. W. The Frontiersman. A great story about Simon Kenton who was a contemporary of Daniel
Boone. Set mostly in Kentucky and Ohio. Portrays the conflict between the whites and indians from
about 1780 to 1811.
Hickam, H. J. 1999. October Sky. Island Books. 428. A group of high school boys in 1957 (Sputnik
year) decide they want to be rocket launchers. They launch the coal mining town in Virginia into the
rocket age.
Harvell, R. 2010. The Bells: a novel. 384. The story of Moses Froben an 18th century singer from his birth
in a small Swiss village to the opera halls of Venice and those he met along the way.
King, D. 2005. Skeletons on the Zahara. Viking. 351. The true story of a ship crew wrecked off the coast
of Africa in the early 1900s and their attempt at survival.
Kurlansky, M. 2002. Salt: a world history. Walker & Co.. 484. Everything you ever wanted to know
about salt. Author of Cod * The Basque History of the World.
Langaewiesche, W. 1996. Sahara Unveiled: A journey across the desert. Pantheon. 299. A writer takes a
trip across the Sahara.
Levine, P. 2005. Solomon vs. Lord. Bantam. 537pp. Excellent: really funny. Two attorneys team up to
defend a murder case they have no chance of winning. Law, mystery.
Loewen, J. 1995. Lies my teacher told me. Touchstone. 383. Everything from Columbus' treatment of
the indigenous to Woodrow Wilson as a white supremacist. A detailed look at the omissions from the
history books being used in schools today and why.
Manchester, W. R. 1978. American Caesar. The story of Douglas McArthur and the army.
Manchester, W. R. 1983. The last lion: Winston Spencer Churchill.

Moynahan, B. 2004. God's Bestseller. St. Martins Press. 421. A great book about the translation of the
bible from Greek/Hebrew into English by William Tynndale (1494-1536).
Mukherjee, S. 2010. The emperor of all maladies: a biography of cancer. 571. The history of cancer and
those that try to conquer it.
Nemirovsky, I. 2004. Suite Francaise. 395. She was a Russian Jew who wrote other novels. This is about
the WWII in France seen from the eyes of French people. The author after writing the manuscript in
occupied France was taken into custody and died at Auschwitz (as did her husband a few weeks
later). The novel was published sixty years later by her daughter who herself and her younger sister
only barely escaped capture by the authorities in France. Well worth reading.
Paulsen, G. 1994. Winterdance: the fine madness of running the iditarod. A great book about a guy who
decides to run the Alaska Iditarod dog race.
Paush, R and J Zaslow. 2008. The last lecture. 281. The story of the last lecture given by Prof. Randy Paush
a few weeks before he died of pancreatic cancer.
Rutherford, E. 2004. The Princes of Ireland: the Dublin Saga. Doubleday. 776. A historical novel about
Ireland from 500AD to 1500 AD.
Shaara, J. 1996. Gods and generals. Ballantine. 498. A historical portrayal with dialogue about the early
and mid- Civil war in Virginia. A very easy reading portrayal of Jackson, Lee, Hancock,
Chamberlain, Stuart.
Shaara, J. 2001. Rise to rebellion. Ballantine. 492. The events leadingup to the Declaration of
Independence from Britain.
Shaara, J. 2002. The Glorious Cause. Ballantine. 638. The military story of the American Revolution
post Bunker Hill to Yorktown
Shaara, M. The killer angels. A very readable portrayal of the battle of Gettysburg. Excellent history
lesson.
Thompson, H. 2006. To the edge of the world. Also: This thing of Darkness (England publication). The
story of the Beagle, Darwin, Fitzroy and the great adventure of all.
Unger, H. G. 2011. American tempest: how the Boston tea party sparked a revolution. 288. An excellent
history of the times preceeding he revolutionary war with an excellent examination of the role of
John Hancock, Sam Adams, and John Adams therein. Also wrote The last founding father and Lion
of Liberty.
Wade, N. 2006. Before the Dawn: recovering the lost history of our ancestors. A very readable account of
the history of mankind from a genetic point of view.
Winchester, S. 1998. The Professor and the Madman. Harper-Collins. 237. The making of the Oxford
English Dictionary
