EDS-AOP

QUICK GUIDE
The easiest way to set up a Logix Designer EtherNet/IP
connection with DATALOGIC Devices (without CBX-500)

AOPs (Add On Profiles) through EDS (Electronic Data Sheets) is the Rockwell Automation state of the art device integration of an EtherNet/IP
device. The EDS file can be shipped with the device in some media format like a CD or made available on the device manufacturers website.

INTRODUCTION
RSLogix is the family of IEC-1131-compliant ladder logic programming packages commonly referred as the engineering
tool for Rockwell Automation PLC and Devices (from v21 on, RSLogix 5000 develops into STUDIO 5000).
Prior to RSLogix 5000 v20 (2012), the I/O tree configuration could only be populated with the pre-defined Modules as well as
modules that had an Add-On Profile (AOP) created, tested, and added to the RSLogix 5000 installation. Creating an AOP was
complicated and required a module vendor to work closely with the RSLogix 5000 developers. Installing them was tricky.
Devices that didn't have a Module Profile or an Add-On Profile had to be created as Generic Modules, or couldn't be run as I/O
by the controller.
For v20, Rockwell Software rolled out another method for I/O device configuration in RSLogix 5000: the EDS-based AOP. An
Electronic Data Sheet (EDS) is an ASCII text file that describes the features of EtherNet/IP device and is used by software tools
for device and network configuration. A well designed EDS will make device integration easy: a specially formatted section in
the EDS file allowed devices to show up in the RSLogix 5000 hardware selector without going through the AOP mechanism.
In short, we can say that prior to 2012 there was no advantage to constructing EDS files. Few, if any, tools were able to use these
kinds of EDS files in the way they were intended. With V20 of RsLogix5000 this has all changed: for more information please
refer to EDS AOP Logic Designer Guidelines that Rockwell publishes (Rockwell Automation Publication 1756-CO003A-ENE - April 2012).

WHATS NEW FOR DATALOGIC?

No longer need the Generic Ethernet Module for each new node to be added in the network!
No longer mistakes while editing the Connection Parameters (Assemblies Instances, sizes)!
A customized, Vendor specific, DATALOGIC Module Type will be available in the Catalog after
installing (once) the EDS file! The associated custom icon will be always displayed for the node.

STEP1: be sure you are using a V20.x (or higher) version for RSLogix 5000 engineering tool.

STEP2: get the desired EDS file on the PC and go on with the install procedure (to be done only once)

STEP3: insert a New Module in the Ethernet, looking for the desired Device in the Catalog

NOTE: after the EDS file installation, Datalogic will be

detectable in the Module Type Catalog. A filter can be
applied to view only the desired Vendor devices.

STEP4: set a unique Name (e.g. Matrix300) and a valid IP Address for the node (e.g. 172.27.101.39)

NOTE: in the Connection tab it is also possible to change

the default Requested Packet Interval time (RPI).

THATS IT: the DATALOGIC Device node is ready in the network with the related Module-Defined I/O tags!

NOTE: because the input

data
is
updated
asynchronously at the
Requested
Packet
Interval time (RPI),
Datalogic recommends
the input data to be
buffered to internal tags
at one place in the
program.
This
will
ensure that the same data
is used throughout your
entire
ladder
logic
program.

From here forward, you can still refer to the usual User-Defined Data-Types DL_Inputs and DL_Outputs struct in the supplied
ACD example project file.
All the EtherNet/IP How to documentation supplied by Datalogic is still valid!
