While hearts are sick with sorrow,
And cheeks are wet with tears
For cares that haunt tomorrow
Or lade the passing years,
There somewhere is a kindness,
A word from tongue or pen,
Which heaven, but for our blindness,
Could use to comfort men.
Why let the world be bitter
And sorrow camp around,
Where stars of hope should glitter
And flowers strew the ground?
Tho clouds be thick above us,
And thorns our feet beset,
Still does our Father love us
And God cannot forget.
There is no heart so weary
But Christ can lift the load;
No prospect is so dreary
If He but point the road.
O, let the heart be lightened,
And hope the way illume;
The threatening skies be brightened,
And joy dispel the gloom.
There is a brighter morning,
A happier, sweeter day,
Our every hope adorning
With its unfettered ray;
And toward that morn were speeding
With glad hands lifted high,
Our trials all unheeding,
Our sorrows all passed by.

HEN God created man, it was

His plan that
man should live
forever. The tree
of life, of which
Adam and Eve
partook before their fall, had the
property of perpetuating immortality.
After sin entered in the world, no
human being was permitted to eat
of the tree of life, so there could not
exist an immortal sinner.
In his fallen condition, Adam
received the sentence that he would
return to the dust from which he was
taken. Since the time the holy pair
was cast out of Paradise, the lot of
man has been hard labor, weariness, and in the sweat of his brow
he had to earn his everyday bread.
Each day a man loses millions of
cells of which the human body is
composed. These cells die. For that
reason our heavenly Father has made
provision in every twenty-four hours
for the human body to recover what
is lost during the day. While man
sleeps, new cells are reproduced to
replace the dead ones. The oxygen
which we breathe in helps to recreate the new cells. It is noticeable that
when one sleeps he breathes deeper than when he is awake.
At the same time, the used air
from the lungs is exhaled in the
form of carbon dioxide. As the air is
exhaled by this organ of elimination,
cells are also expelled from the
body. The trees around the house
absorb the carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. This is why it is good
to have the windows open, if possible, while we sleep, to receive a
plentiful supply of fresh oxygen.
What happens if we do not
sleep for only one night? The next
day we feel miserable, our minds
are dull, the body is weak, we feel
tired, and we have no success in
our work. This is because we have
not replaced the dead cells for new
ones.

The Reformation Herald, JanuaryMarch 1998

Why do we get tired? Because

we are mortal. If there would be no
chance to reproduce the dead cells
in our body, in a short time we
would cease living. How good is our
Father in heaven that gives us
opportunities to live, by His providential arrangement of nightly rest!
However, we are told that one
day we will not get weary or tired.
The Bible says that they shall run,
and not be weary; and they shall
walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31.
When will that be? It will happen
after our vile, mortal bodies will be
changed to immortality, at the second coming of Jesus. Paul says:
Behold, I shew you a mystery;
We shall not all sleep, but we shall
all be changed, in a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last
trump: for the trumpet shall sound,

and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

For this corruptible must put on
incorruption, and this mortal must
put on immortality. So when this
corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have

put on immortality, then shall be

brought to pass the saying that is
written, Death is swallowed up in
victory. 1 Corinthians 15:5154.
For our conversation [politeuma, citizenship] is in heaven; from
whence also we look for the
Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who
shall change our vile body, that it
may be fashioned like unto his glorious body. Philippians 3:20, 21.
Those who will reach the qualification to be changed to immortality
will need no rest, sleep, nor will they
be wearied. They will not need a
night for relaxation. Their cells will
not longer die, because they are
now immortal. They will live before
God in an eternal day.
In the Bible the inheritance of
the saved is called a country.
Hebrews 11:1416. . . . The tree of
life yields its fruit every month, and
the leaves of the tree are for the
service of the nations. . . . There the
wide-spreading plains swell into hills
of beauty, and the mountains of
God rear their lofty summits. On
those peaceful plains, beside those
living streams, Gods people, so
long pilgrims and wanderers, shall
find a home. 1
In the City of God there shall be
no night. None will need or desire
repose. There will be no weariness in
doing the will of God and offering
praise to His name. We shall ever
feel the freshness of the morning
and shall ever be far from its close.
And they need no candle, neither
light of the sun; for the Lord God
giveth them light. Revelation 22:5.
The light of the sun will be superseded by a radiance which is not
painfully dazzling, yet which immeasurably surpasses the brightness of
our noontide. The glory of God and
the Lamb floods the Holy City with
unfading light. The redeemed walk in
the sunless glory of perpetual day. 2
Man cannot produce life, and
immortality. It is a free gift of God
through Jesus Christ our Saviour. It
is within our reach, and available to
every one of us at our command.
Will you obtain it?

The Family Unit

by A. C. Sas

HE word of God
tells us about the
creation of this
world and all
things that are in
it. They were created by the word
of God. We read: By the word of the
Lord were the heavens made; and
all the host of them by the breath of
his mouth. . . . For he spake, and it
was done; he commanded, and it
stood fast. Psalm 33:6, 9.
When the creation of everything
was finished, on the sixth day of the
creative week, man was made as
the crowning work of creation.
After the earth with its teeming
animal and vegetable life had been
called into existence, man, the
crowning work of the Creator, and
the one for whom the beautiful earth
had been fitted up, was brought
upon the stage of action. . . .
The genealogy of our race, as
given by inspiration, traces back its
origin, not to a line of developing
germs, mollusks, and quadrupeds,
but to the great Creator. Though
formed from the dust, Adam was
the son of God. 1
And God said, Let us make
man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion
over the fish of the sea, and over
the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over
every creeping thing that creepeth
upon the earth. So God created
man in his own image, in the image
of God created he him; male and

female created he them. Genesis

1:26, 27.
Man was not created by the
word like the other things, but
made by the hands of God. Both
man and woman were created on
the sixth day of the week.
As man came forth from the
hand of his Creator, he was of lofty
stature and perfect symmetry. His
countenance bore the ruddy tint of
health and glowed with the light of
life and joy. Adams height was
much greater than that of men who
now inhabit the earth. Eve was
somewhat less in stature; yet her
form was noble, and full of beauty. 2
The details how Adam and Eve
were created are given in the second chapter of Genesis:
And the Lord God formed man
of the dust of the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath
of life; and man became a living
soul. . . .
And the Lord God caused a
deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and
he slept: and he took one of his
ribs, and closed up the flesh instead
thereof; and the rib, which the Lord
God had taken from man, made he
a woman, and brought her unto the
man. And Adam said, This is now
bone of my bones, and flesh of my
flesh: she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.
Genesis 2:7, 2123.
God Himself gave Adam a
companion. He provided an help
meet for hima helper corresponding to himone who was fitted to

be his companion, and who could

be one with him in love and sympathy. Eve was created from a rib
taken from the side of Adam, signifying that she was not to control him
as the head, nor to be trampled
under his feet as an inferior, but to
stand by his side as an equal, to be
loved and protected by him. A part
of man, bone of his bone, and flesh
of his flesh, she was his second
self, showing the close union and
the affectionate attachment that
should exist in this relation. 3
When God performed the marriage of Adam and Eve, He proclaimed the marriage law in these
words: Therefore shall a man leave
his father and his mother, and shall
cleave unto his wife: and they shall
be one flesh. Genesis 2:24.
[Jesus] referred [the Pharisees]
to the blessed days of Eden, when
God pronounced all things very
good. Then marriage and the
Sabbath had their origin, twin institutions for the glory of God in the
benefit of humanity. Then, as the
Creator joined the hands of the holy
pair in wedlock, saying, A man shall
leave his father and his mother, and
shall cleave unto his wife: and they
shall be one. He enunciated the law
of marriage for all the children of
Adam to the close of time. That
which the Eternal Father Himself
had pronounced good was the law
of highest blessing and development for man. 4
The law of marriage proclaimed
in Eden is the law that should reguThe Reformation Herald, JanuaryMarch 1998

please them but, have your eye single to the glory of God, and serve
Him with your whole heart. This will
not wean you from your husband at
all, but will draw you closer to him,
and cause you to leave father,
mother, sisters and brothers and
friends and cleave to your husband,
and love him better than anyone on
earth, and make his wishes your
wishes. And you can live in harmony and happiness. 6
The second point to be considered in the law of marriage given
by God is to Cleave. The word
cleave means to adhere, to cling.

Two lives now blend in one. They

are now one. It is not sufficient just
to place themselves parallel. They
must be one in everything. This
does not do away with his or her
individuality. The wife and the husband are still two physical persons,
but they do everything together,

they keep their accounts together,

they hold their properties together,
they make plans together, and neither of them will say: this is mine;
that is yours, but rather they will
happily say: all things that are mine
belong to us.
The third point which brings the
marriage unit to completion is: and
they shall be one flesh. The total
happiness of the couple depends
on this point; whether they become
one, or continue twain. A man
should consider his wife as a part of
his own body, and his wife should
thus consider him as well. As one
does not wish
to hurt himself, they
should not
hurt each
other either.
The word of
God
describes
the duty of
the husband
thus:
So
ought men
to love their
wives as
their own
bodies. He
that loveth
his wife
loveth himself. For no
man ever yet
hated his
own flesh;
but nourisheth and
cherisheth it,
even as the
Lord the
church; for
we are members of his
body, of his
flesh, and of
his bones. For this cause shall a
man leave his father and mother,
and shall be joined unto his wife,
and they two shall be one flesh.
Ephesians 5:2831.
Husbands, love your wives,
and be not bitter against them.
Colossians 3:19.

THE FAMILY UNIT

late the marriage institution. All

other interpretations, clauses, explanations, and excuses have no place
to accommodate the desires and
tendencies of mans evil heart.
Jesus endorsed the marriage institution and referred to the blessed
days of Eden when all things were
very good. We read the words of the
Master:
But from the beginning of the
creation God made them male and
female. For this cause shall a man
leave his father and mother, and
cleave to his wife; and they twain
shall be one flesh: so then they are
no more twain, but one flesh.
What therefore God hath joined
together, let not man put asunder. Mark 10:69.
Therefore two lives blend in
one. They are no more twain, but
one. The number one is not
divisible without fragmentation.
So is also marriage.
In the law of marriage given
by God in the beginning there
are some important points to be
considered. The first one is:
Leave. When a young couple
gets married they should obey
this command. He should leave
his father and mother. This
does not mean that a young
couple should despise their
parents. They have now formed
a little kingdom where the husband is the king and the wife is
the queen. In this sacred circle
no one should meddle.
Around every family there
is a sacred circle that should be
kept unbroken. Within this circle
no other person has a right to
come. Let not the husband or
the wife permit another to share
the confidences that belong
solely to themselves. 5
Many unhappy families
have ended in shameful separation simply because this first command was not obeyed. While God
has said Leave, some parents or
in-laws have insisted: Stay with us.
You have sought to please your
friends altogether too much, and if
you would have eternal life you
must cut loose from relatives and
acquaintances and not seek to

THE FAMILY UNIT

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell

with them according to knowledge,
giving honour unto the wife, as unto
the weaker vessel, and as being
heirs together of the grace of life;
that your prayers be not hindered. 1
Peter 3:7.
The responsibility of the wife is
also described by the apostle Paul.
The wife should consider herself
also as a part of her husband, and
love him, being submissive in everything which is not contrary to the
will of God.
Wives, submit yourselves unto
your own husbands, as unto the
Lord. For the husband is the head
of the wife, even as Christ is the
head of the church: and he is the
saviour of the body. Therefore as
the church is subject unto Christ, so
let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. . . .
Nevertheless let every one
of you in particular so
love his wife even as
himself; and the
wife see that she
reverence her
husband.
Ephesians
5:2224, 33.
Wives,
submit yourselves unto
your own
husbands, as
it is fit in the
Lord.
Colossians 3:18.
Likewise, ye
wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey
not the word, they also may
without the word be won by the conversation of the wives. 1 Peter 3:1.
The husband is the head of the
family, as Christ is the head of the
church; and any course which the
wife may pursue to lessen his influence and lead him to come down
from that dignified, responsible position is displeasing to God. It is the
duty of the wife to yield her wishes
and will to her husband. Both
should be yielding, but the word of
God gives preference to the judgment of the husband. 7
6

For this cause shall a man

leave his father and mother, and
shall be joined unto his wife, and
they two shall be one flesh. If this
instruction were heeded by those
who enter into the marriage relation,
the home life would be pure and
elevated, garrisoned by holy love. 8
The sweetest type of heaven is
a home where the Spirit of the Lord
presides. If the will of God is fulfilled, the husband and wife will
respect each other, and cultivate
love and confidence. Anything that
would mar the peace and unity of
the family should be firmly
repressed, and kindness and love
should be cherished. He who manifests the spirit of tenderness, forbearance, and love, will find that the
same spirit will be reflected upon
him. Where the

grievous wrongs which so often

embitter married life. Only where
Christ reigns, can there be deep,
true, unselfish love. Then soul will
be knit with soul, and the two lives
will blend in harmony. Angels of
God will be guests in the home, and
their holy vigils will hallow the marriage chamber. 10
God wants the home to be the
happiest place on earth, the very
symbol of the home in heaven.
Bearing the marriage responsibilities in the home, linking their interests with Jesus Christ, leaning upon
His arm and His assurance, husband and wife may share a happiness in this union that angels of
God commend. 11
My brother and sister, both of
you have strong will power. You may
make this power a great blessing or
a great curse to yourselves and to
those with whom you come in contact. Do not try to compel each
other to do as you wish. You cannot
do this and retain each others love.
Manifestations of self-will destroy
the peace and happiness of the
home. Let not your married life
be one of contention. If you do
you will both be unhappy. Be
kind in speech and gentle in
action, giving up your own
wishes. Watch well your
words, for they have a powerful influence for good or for ill.
Allow no sharpness to come
into your voices. Bring into your
united life the fragrance of
Christlikeness. 12

reigns,
there will be no talk of unsuitability
in the marriage relation. If Christ
indeed is formed within, the hope of
glory, there will be union and love in
the home. Christ abiding in the
heart of the wife, will be at agreement with Christ abiding in the heart
of the husband. They will be striving
together for the mansions Christ
has gone to prepare for those who
love him. 9
Religion is needed in the
home. Only this can prevent the

The Weight of Evidence

by A. C. Sas

O the law
and to the
testimony:
if they
speak not
according
to this
word, it is because there is no light in
them. Isaiah 8:20.
The words of true prophets are
always in harmony with the Law of
Godthe ten commandmentsand
the testimony, the words of the
other prophets. Unless they speak
things that are in harmony with
these, we should shun them and
give no heed to their message.
There will be false dreams and
false visions, which have some truth,
but lead away from the original faith.
The Lord has given men a rule by
which do detect them: [Isaiah 8:20
quoted]. If they belittle the law of
God, if they pay no heed to His will
as revealed in the testimonies of His
Spirit, they are deceivers. They are
controlled by impulse and impressions, which they believe to be from
the Holy Spirit, and consider more
reliable than the Inspired Word. 1
In the gift of prophecy manifested in the last period of this worlds
history in the person of E. G. White,
it is evident that her writings and
messages to the church are in full
harmony with the Holy Scriptures.
There are some, even among
those who profess to believe in the
three angels messages, that do not
believe in the inspiration of the

The Reformation Herald, JanuaryMarch 1998

Testimonies. They say that we should

stick to the statement of sola scriptura, that is, the Bible, and the Bible
alone. In fact, all Adventist doctrines
are based on the Holy Scriptures,
the Bible. But the Testimonies help
us to understand better the truth of
the Bible. The same Spirit that
inspired the Bible writers to give their
messages inspired also Ellen G.
White to write what the Lord
revealed to the church through her.
The Spirit of the Lord will be in
the instruction, and doubts existing
in many minds will be swept away.
The testimonies themselves will be
the key that will explain the messages given, as scripture is
explained by scripture. 2
Those who try to find excuse not
to believe in the inspiration of the
Testimonies, will find occasion to do
so. We should decide the question:
Are the Testimonies of God or not?
Do they teach Bible truth or not?
As with the Bible, so with the
Testimonies. Those who desire to
doubt will have plenty of room. God
does not propose to remove all
occasion for unbelief. He gives evidence, which must be carefully
investigated with a humble mind
and a teachable spirit; and all
should decide from the weight of
evidence. 3
You have talked over matters
as you viewed them, that the communications from Sister White are
not all from the Lord, but a portion
is her own mind, her own judgment,

THE WEIGHT OF EVIDENCE

A Prophet
A m o n g Yo u

which is no better than anybody

elses judgment and ideas. This is
one of Satans hooks to hang your
doubts upon to deceive your soul
and the souls of others who will
dare to draw the line in this matter
and say, this portion which pleases
me is from God, but that portion
which points out and condemns my
course of conduct is from Sister
White alone, and bears not the holy
signet. 4
If rational beings really desire
the truth, God will give them sufficient light to enable them to decide
what is truth. If they have a heart to
obey, they will see sufficient evidence to walk in the light. But if they
in heart desire to evade the truth,
He will not work a miracle to gratify
their unbelief. He will never remove
every chance or occasion to doubt.
If they honestly, sincerely grasp the
light, and walk in it, that light will
increase until lingering doubts will
be dispelled. But if they choose
darkness, their questioning and caviling over the truth will increase,
their unbelief will be strengthened,
and the light which they would not
accept will become to them darkness, and how great will be that
darkness! It will be as much greater
than before the light came, as the
light which was rejected was clearer
and more abundant than the light
which first shone upon them. Thus it
was with the Jewish nation; thus it
will be with the Christian world in
every generation. The rejectors of
light treasure up to themselves
wrath against the day of wrath.
There are those who walk amid perpetual doubts. They feed on doubts,
enjoy doubts, talk doubts, and question everything that it is for their
interest to believe. To those who
thus trifle with the plain testimonies
of Gods word, and who refuse to
believe because it is inconvenient
and unpopular to do so, the light will
finally become darkness; truth will
appear to the darkened understanding as error, and error will be
accepted as truth. When thus
shrouded in error, they will find it
perfectly natural and convenient to
believe what is false, and will
become strong in their faith. 5

THE WEIGHT OF EVIDENCE

God is either teaching His

church, reproving their wrongs and
strengthening their faith, or He is not.
This work is of God, or it is not. God
does nothing in partnership with
Satan. My work for the past thirty
years bears the stamp of God or the
stamp of the enemy. There is no halfway work in the matter. The Testimonies are of the Spirit of God, or of
the devil. In arraying yourself against
the servants of God you are doing a
work either for God or for the devil. 6
When we read the Bible and the
Testimonies, we should not search
for statements to agree with our
opinion. We should earnestly seek
the Lord to teach us what is His will,
what is present truth. When we
understand what the Lord is teaching through His word or the Spirit of
Prophecy, we should surrender our
convictions, our ideas, our own
teachings, and accept without questioning the written word.
You need to study the word of
God with a purpose, not to confirm
your own ideas, but to bring them to
be trimmed, to be condemned or
approved as they are or are not in
harmony with the word of God. The
Bible should be your constant companion. You should study the testimonies, not to pick out certain
sentences to use as you see fit, to
strengthen your assertions, while
you disregard the plainest statements given to correct your course
of action. 7
God gives sufficient evidence
for the candid mind to believe; but
he who turns from the weight of evidence because there are a few
things which he cannot make plain
to his finite understanding will be left
in the cold, chilling atmosphere of
unbelief and questioning doubts,
and will make shipwreck of faith. 8
The Lord has sent His people
much instruction, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little, and
there a little. Little heed is given to
the Bible, and the Lord has given a
lesser light to lead men and women
to the greater light. O, how much
good would be accomplished if the
books containing this light were
read with a determination to carry
out the principles they contain!
8

There would be a thousandfold

greater vigilance, a thousandfold
more self-denial and resolute effort.
And many more would now be
rejoicing in the light of present
truth. 9
If you lose confidence in the
Testimonies you will drift away from
Bible truth. I have been fearful that
many would take a questioning,
doubting position, and in my distress
for your souls I would warn you. How
many will heed the warning? As you
now hold the Testimonies, should
one be given crossing your track,
correcting your errors, would you feel
at perfect liberty to accept or reject
any part or the whole? That which
you will be least inclined to receive is
the very part most needed. 10
Satan is . . . constantly pressing
in the spuriousto lead away from
the truth. The very last deception of
Satan will be to make of none effect
the testimony of the Spirit of God.
Where there is no vision, the people
perish (Prov. 29:18). Satan will work
ingeniously, in different ways and
through different agencies, to unsettle the confidence of Gods remnant
people in the true testimony. 11
The Lord designs to warn you,
to reprove, to counsel, through the
testimonies given, and to impress
your minds with the importance of
the truth of His Word. The written
testimonies are not to give new
light, but to impress vividly upon the
heart the truths of inspiration
already revealed. Mans duty to God
and to his fellowman has been distinctly specified in Gods Word; yet
but few of you are obedient to the
light given. Additional truth is not
brought out; but God has through
the Testimonies simplified the great
truths already given and in His own
chosen way brought them before
the people to awaken and impress
the mind with them, that all may be
left without excuse. 12
If [some] fight against the
visions, of which they have no
knowledge; if they carry their opposition so far as to oppose that in
which they have had no experience,
and feel annoyed when those who
believe that the visions are of God
speak of them in meeting, and com-

fort themselves with the instruction

given through vision, the church
may know that they are not right. 13
The Lord has enlightened us in
regard to what is coming upon the
earth that we may enlighten others,
and we shall not be held guiltless if
we are content to sit at ease, with
folded hands, and quibble over matters of minor importance. The minds
of many have been engrossed with
contentions, and they have rejected
the light given through the
Testimonies because it did not
agree with their own opinions. God
will not work a miracle to convince
these rebellious ones of the truth of
the Testimonies, and compel them
to acknowledge His message. He
has given sufficient evidence for
their faith, and it is only the stubbornness of the natural heart that
prevents them from acknowledging
the light. 14
God has set before you an
open door; let not man seek to
close it. Open your heart and mind,
and let the Sun of Righteousness
shine into your soul. How long will it
be before the word of truth will have
weight with you? How long will it be
before you will believe the testimonies of Gods Spirit? When is the
truth for this time to find access to
your hearts? Will you wait till Christ
comes? How long will God permit
the way to be hedged up? Clear the
Kings highway, I beseech you, and
make His paths straight. 15

Education A Divine
Institution
by Lesley Johnson

E are told that

in the time of
the end every
divine institution is to be
restored. 1
We are
also told that all schools among us
will soon be closed up. 2
How can we reconcile these two
statements? As Reformers, this
would not present a great obstacle
if we were utilizing the way that has
been opened before many of us. We
know that the Elijah message
(Malachi 4:5, 6) is the restoration of
the family. While government control
of public and private schools is
increasing, it will not be surprising
to see many private schools closed
up. But we should consider another
avenue. First, though, let us look at
the public school system in general.
Many people of other faiths have
seen how this system has contributed to the deplorable state of
affairs in the world today by:
1. Undermining civic values
through situation ethics (the idea
that morality depends upon circumstances).
2. Introducing alternative
lifestyles (Straight or gayits all
O.K.).
3. Exalting the individual (You
are not responsible for your own
actions. The devil made you do it;
support groups actually supporting
irresponsibility for our own actions).
Cheating is not understood to
be wrong; getting caught is. Sports
figures are worshipped as gods.
Entertainers commit immoral and
lewd acts on stage and in their personal lives, but are considered worthy of praise and adoration.
It is easy to see at a glance that
there is urgent need among us to
The Reformation Herald, JanuaryMarch 1998

remove our children from these

influences and from peer pressure.
Could it be that the admonition to
press together has a deeper
meaning than we have heretofore
seen?
Gods word places great stress
upon the influence of association,
even upon men and women. How
much greater is its power on the
developing mind and character of
children and youth. The company
they keep, the principles they adopt,
the habits they form, will decide the
question of their usefulness here
and of their future, eternal interest.
It is a terrible fact, and one that
should make the hearts of parents
tremble, that in so many schools
and colleges to which the youth are
sent for mental culture and discipline, influences prevail which misshape the character, divert the
mind from lifes true aims,
and debase the
morals. Through
contact with the
irreligious, the
pleasure loving, and the
corrupt,
many, many
youth lose
the simplicity
and purity,
the faith in
God, and the
spirit of selfsacrifice that
Christian fathers
and mothers have
cherished and guarded by careful instruction
and earnest prayer. 3
Why is this so?
Let me tell you that children
are born to evil. Satan seems to
have control of them. 4

Children are the lawful prey of

the enemy, because they are not
subjects of grace, have not experienced the cleansing power of the
blood of Jesus, and the evil angels
have access to these children; and
some parents are careless and suffer them to work with but little
restraint. . . .
The destroying angel is soon to
go forth again, not to destroy the
first-born alone, but to slay utterly
old and young, both men, women
and little children who have not the
mark. Parents, if you wish to save
your children, separate them from
the world, keep them from the company of wicked children; for if you
suffer them to go with wicked children, you cannot prevent them from
partaking of their wickedness and
being corrupted. 5
[God] would have us
understand how to govern our families,
how to control
our children,
how to command our
households
to keep the
way of the
Lord. 6
As I
began

this article,
I became
awed by the
overwhelming
abundance of
counsel published in
the Spirit of Prophecy
regarding the parental education of
children. Parents, guardians, and
children, please do not become
guilty of sins of neglect. Look for

yourselves in the Index to the

Writings of Ellen G. White and take
heed. Read of the experience of
King Josiah in 2 Kings 22. When he
was shown the book of the law
which had been neglected for so
long, he rent his clothes and did
not delay to carry out Gods commands. Do not jeopardize your own
or your childrens salvation by following convenience or false economy.
Parents stand in the place of
God to their children and they will
have to render an account, whether
they have been faithful to the little
few committed to their trust. 7
During the time of Judahs captivity, the young, who had been
educated in the city, had, many of
them, like the daughters of Lot in
Sodom, partaken so largely of the
customs that they lingered among
the heathen, though angels bade
them hurry out. The spirit of prophecy was passed by with a few
remarks, or fell upon ears entirely
deaf; although in bondage, present
conditions were preferable to freedom with the effort necessary to
obtain it. 8
Regarding His precepts, God
commands that thou shalt teach
them diligently unto thy children,
and shalt talk of them when thou
sittest in thine house, and when
thou walkest by the way, and when
thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 6:7.
In 2 Timothy 1:5, 3:15, we read
that Lois and Eunice taught Timothy
with excellent results.
In the early centuries after
Christ, the humility of the Son of
God at first characterized the body
of Christians, and therein lay the
power of the early church. Christian
mothers gathered their children
about them as the Jewish mothers
had done in the days of their prosperity. From infancy the truths of
Gods word were implanted in their
hearts; sacred songs were on their
lips; the Word of God was the text
book from which all lessons were
learned. 9
Be ye not unequally yoked
together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with
unrighteousness? and what com10

munion hath light with darkness?

And what concord hath Christ with
Belial? or what part hath he that
believeth with an infidel? And what
agreement hath the temple of God
with idols? for ye are the temple of
the living God; as God hath said, I
will dwell in them, and walk in them;
and I will be their God, and they
shall be my people. Wherefore
come out from among them, and be
ye separate, saith the Lord, and
touch not the unclean thing; and I
will receive you, and will be a Father
unto you, and ye shall be my sons
and daughters, saith the Lord
Almighty. 2 Corinthians 6:1418.
Again, in the early church, parents dared not allow their children
to remain in pagan schools, for the
very atmosphere breathed of the
heathen worship; the air was heavy
with the odor of sacrifice to idols.
They dared not sit at the table with
those with whom they had once
been familiar, for the food had been
consecrated to idols. In the most
careful way the rising generation
was educated, and Christianity took
the place of paganism. 10
And after these things I saw
another angel come down from
heaven, having great power; and
the earth was lightened with his
glory. And he cried mightily with a
strong voice, saying, Babylon the
great is fallen, is fallen, and is
become the habitation of devils, and
the hold of every foul spirit, and a
cage of every unclean and hateful
bird. For all nations have drunk of
the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have
committed fornication with her, and
the merchants of the earth are
waxed rich through the abundance
of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come
out of her, my people, that ye be not
partakers of her sins, and that ye
receive not of her plagues.
Revelation 18:14.
There is a Hebrew maxim
which says that Jerusalem was
destroyed because the education of
her children was neglected. 11
In sending children to the public
schools, parents are placing them
under demoralizing influences

influences that injure the morals and

habits. In such surroundings, children often receive instruction that
trains them to be enemies of Christ.
They lose sight of piety and virtue. 12
A great work must be done all
through the world, and let no one
conclude that, because the end is
near, there is no need of special
effort to build up the various institutions as the cause shall demand.
You are not to know the day or the
hour of the Lords appearing, for this
has not been revealed, and let none
speculate on that which has not
been given him to understand. Let
everyone work upon that which has
been placed in his hands, doing the
daily duties that God requires. 13
Many public schools are permeated by the baneful influence of
boys and girls who are experts in
sin. And the children who are
allowed to play on the street are
also obtaining a training that
thoughtless parents will sometime
learn leads to recklessness and
lawlessness. 14
Our Saviour did not encourage
any to attend the rabbinical schools
of His day, for the reason that their
minds would be corrupted with the
continually repeated, They say, or It
has been said. Why, then, should
we accept the unstable words of
men as exalted wisdom, when a
greater, a certain wisdom is at our
command? 15
Efforts to educate our children
and youth in the fear of the Lord
without making a study of the word
prominent, are sadly misdirected.
Unless there is such a training as
will lead to a recognition and an
abhorrence of sin, moral deformity
will result. Our children should be
removed from the evil influences of
the public school and placed where
thoroughly converted teachers may
educate them in the Holy
Scriptures. Thus students will be
taught to make the word of God the
grand rule of their lives. 16
We have been warned again
and again that the character of the
education that has been current in
the world cannot stand the test of
the word of God. The subject of
education is one that should interest

the Sabbath. Do not suffer them to violate Gods

holy day by playing in
the house or out of
doors. You may just as
well break the Sabbath
yourselves as to let your
children do it, and when
you suffer your children
to wander about, and
suffer them to play upon
the Sabbath, God looks
upon you as Sabbathbreakers. 20
We are not left without a way of escape in
the dilemma of educating our children. We are
able to redeem the time,
if we will, for children
are susceptible to good
influences also.
It is still true that
children are the most
susceptible to the teachings of the gospel; their
hearts are open to
divine influences, and
strong to retain the
lessons received. 21
We must consider and incorporate the counsel given us by God in
the Spirit of Prophecy. We must
show the world that we have a better way. When considering teaching
your children, you must be properly
preparedfirst, spiritually, then mentally. Reading, writing, and arithmetic
must be taught, and the discipline
often lacking in classes of one or
two students, must be applied as a
top priority, for through it comes obedience. It is not up to us to determine if we really should accept the
counsel given. We must consider
that it was given us by God and it is
our duty. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions;
so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
Ezekiel 18:30.
Remember, history relates that
iniquitous regimes gained control
through the education of the children. Let us not only prevent this
from happening to us, but let us
come up higher and use education
to Gods honor and glory, through
His abundant grace.

every Seventh-day Adventist. The

Lord says to us, Seventh-day
Adventists are not to place themselves under the counsel and
instruction of teachers who know
not the truth for this time. The molding and fashioning of minds should
not be left to men who have not
comprehended the importance of a
preparation for that life which measures with the life of God. 17
In planning for the education of
their children outside the home, parents should realize that it is no
longer safe to send them to the
public school, and should endeavor
to send them to schools where they
will obtain an education based on a
Scriptural foundation. Upon every
Christian parent there rests the
solemn obligation of giving to his
children an education that will lead
them to gain a knowledge of the
Lord and to become partakers of
the divine nature through obedience
to Gods will and way. 18
As we go forward in establishing
church schools we shall find a work
to be done for the children in places
where it has been thought a school
could not be maintained. As far as
possible, all our children should have
the privilege of a Christian education.
To provide this we must sometimes
establish home church schools. It
would be well if several families in a
neighborhood would unite to employ
a humble, God-fearing teacher to
give to the parents that help that is
needed in educating their children.
This will be a great blessing to many
isolated groups of Sabbathkeepers,
and a plan more pleasing to the Lord
than that which has been sometimes
followed, of sending young children
away from their homes to attend one
of our larger schools. 19
Now there is a parallel area of
education which we must consider.
Our mission as a church in these last
days is to declare the Sabbath more
fully. This includes our behavior as a
family, which we are told, is the
greatest Christian witness that we
can have for non-believers. But
according to the article quoted previously, we have fallen far short of the
standard. Parents, above every
thing, take care of your children upon

The Nature of the

Godhead
Part 2

The Gr eat I AM
by Peter D. Lausevic
(Emphasis supplied throughout)
The land of the Midianites, where Moses shepherded.

Meeting the Great I AM

Israel had just spent over two
hundred years in Egypt. During that
period of time they had become an
oppressed people, slaves to the
cruel task masters of Pharaoh.
Moses, who mistakenly thought he
would deliver these Hebrews by
force of arms, had just spent forty
years in the land of Midian among
the family of Jethro.
One day, as he was tending his
father-in-laws flock around Horeb,
that great mountain of God, Moses
saw a very strange sighta bush
that was continually burning. A
burning bush in the desert was
nothing new, for he had seen that
many times before. The unusual
part then was that this bush would
not burn out; it kept on burning and
burning. As the sight attracted his
attention, he came nearer to the
flame, when God spoke to him out
of the burning bush, telling him that
the time had come for the deliverance of the Hebrew race from Egypt
and their settlement into that land of
promiseCanaan.
14

Moses was still unsure of this

endeavor and requested authorization for the message he would give.
He asked God: Behold, when I
come unto the children of Israel,
and shall say unto them, The God
of your fathers hath sent me unto
you; and they shall say to me, What
is his name? what shall I say unto
them? Exodus 3:13. Paul gives a
similar requirement for preachers:
And how shall they preach, except
they be sent? Romans 10:15.
As the identifying name for
Himself, God said unto Moses, I
AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus
shalt thou say unto the children of
Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Exodus 3:14. The Great I AM had
now spoken and identified Himself
as such to His servant, Israels
human deliverer.
What does I AM mean? It
comes from the Hebrew hayah
meaning to be, or become, or come
to pass (always emphatic). In
Hebrew as in English, this name is a
form of the verb to be, and implies
that its possessor is the eternal, selfexisting One. 1 The YAH at the end
was later expanded to YHWH which

was the Hebrew sacred term for the

God they worshiped. (In Hebrew, as
in many ancient languages, they
used only consonants with no vowels. The vowel sounds were simply
understood as such.)
I AM means an eternal presence; the past, present, and
future are alike to God. He sees
the most remote events of past history, and the far distant future with
as clear a vision as we do those
things that are transpiring daily. We
know not what is before us, and if
we did, it would not contribute to our
eternal welfare. God gives us an
opportunity to exercise faith and
trust in the great I AM. 2
Accepting this grand responsibility, Moses went down to Egypt and
explained his mission to the downtrodden Israelites. After the first disappointment with Pharaoh, the officers of the children of Israel already
began their murmuring: And they
said unto them, The Lord look upon
you, and judge; because ye have
made our savour to be abhorred in
the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes
of his servants, to put a sword in
their hand to slay us. Exodus 5:21.

sors, He revealed to them a new

facet of His character and called
Himself Jehovah (YEHOVAH), which
means the Self-Existent or the
Eternal One. An interesting point to
make is that whenever there is a
new facet to the work of God, He
reveals Himself under a new name.
(See also Revelation 3:12.)

The I AM revealed in the

New Testament
The Jews, the self-proclaimed
followers of Moses and Abraham,
were once involved in a very heated
discussion with Jesus. Each spoke
of his own origin; Jesus referred to
Himself as I am. Your father
Abraham rejoiced to see my day:
and he saw it, and was glad. Then
said the Jews unto him, Thou art not
yet fifty years old, and hast thou
seen Abraham? Jesus said unto
them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
Before Abraham was, I am. John
8:5658.
According to the Greek, the
words here translated I am (ego
eimi), mean the first person singular
form of I exist (always emphatic).
Although used throughout the New
Testament, this word does not
always necessarily refer to the Deity.
But the context of this passage
reveals that the Jews clearly understood this to be used for the eternal,
Self-Existent One.
This conversation centered on
the issue of origin and the Jews
need of salvation. They answered
him, We be Abrahams seed, and
were never in bondage to any man:
how sayest thou, Ye shall be made
free? The Israelites of old were in
bondage to the Egyptians. The Jews
of Christs day were still in Egyptian
(spiritual) slavery but did not realize
it. For that very reason Jesus
answered them, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, Whosoever committeth sin
is the servant of sin. And the servant
abideth not in the house for ever: but
the Son abideth ever. If the Son
therefore shall make you free, ye
shall be free indeed. He was providing for them full and complete deliverance from sin in the only way possiblethrough the Sons creative

power! If the Son therefore shall

make you free, ye shall be free
indeed. Yet what were they doing
with that possibility? I know that ye
are Abrahams seed; but ye seek to
kill me, because my word hath no
place in you. I speak that which I
have seen with my Father: and ye
do that which ye have seen with
your father. They answered and said
unto him, Abraham is our father.
Jesus saith unto them, If ye were
Abrahams children, ye would do the
works of Abraham. (John 8:3339.)
By claiming Abraham as their
father, they tried to establish the
idea that they did not need salvation
but were saved merely by their lineal relationship to him. Jesus, on
the other hand, tried to show them
that by their works they testified that
Abraham was not their father. But
now ye seek to kill me, a man that
hath told you the truth, which I have
heard of God: this did not Abraham.
. . . Ye are of your father the devil,
and the lusts of your father ye will
do. He was a murderer from the
beginning, and abode not in the
truth, because there is no truth in
him. When he speaketh a lie, he
speaketh of his own: for he is a liar,
and the father of it. John 8:40, 44.
The Pharisees had declared
themselves the children of Abraham.
Jesus told them that this claim could
be established only by doing the
works of Abraham. The true children
of Abraham would live, as he did, a
life of obedience to God. They would
not try to kill One who was speaking
the truth that was given Him from
God. In plotting against Christ, the
rabbis were not doing the works of
Abraham. A mere lineal descent from
Abraham was of no value. Without a
spiritual connection with him, which
would be manifested in possessing
the same spirit, and doing the same
works, they were not his children. 3
As they were talking about their
origin, how does Jesus clarify His
origin by telling them that He comes
or proceeds forth from the Father?
Jesus said unto them, If God were
your Father, ye would love me: for I
proceeded forth and came from
God; neither came I of myself, but
he sent me. John 8:42.
15

THE GREAT I AM

It was then that the I AM

referred to Himself as Jehovah:
And God spake unto Moses, and
said unto him, I am the Lord: And I
appeared unto Abraham, unto
Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name
of God Almighty, but by my name
Jehovah was I not known to them.
Exodus 6:2, 3. The true God had
always been known as El-Shaddai
(God Almighty). But now He was
about to reveal another of His many
attributes by delivering them from
slavery. It was only after personally
experiencing deliverance that the
people could truly call Him Jehovah
(YEHOVAH). In most parts of the
Old Testament, whenever you see
the word LORD in all capitals, the
original is YEHOVAH.
What new attribute does the
name Jehovah reveal about our
God? Notice the reason given for
the keeping of the seventh day
Sabbath in the repetition of the law
in Deuteronomy 5:15: And remember that thou wast a servant in the
land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy
God brought thee out thence
through a mighty hand and by a
stretched out arm: therefore the
Lord thy God commanded thee to
keep the sabbath day.
God brought them out of Egypt
through a mighty hand and by a
stretched out arm. This is why they
were to keep the Sabbath. The previous verses spoke of God creating
the heaven and the earth; but now,
through that same creative power,
He delivers them out of Egypt. His
creative power is used not only to
begin life, but to recreate it and
have it begin anew. This same principle is brought to view when we
speak of conversion from spiritual
Egypt (sin). Create in me a clean
heart, O God; and renew a right
spirit within me. Psalm 51:10. True
conversion is the bringing about of a
new creation. Therefore if any man
be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold,
all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17. Since God brought
them out of Egypt through this
power, and since they were to experience this power in a totally different way than any of their predeces-

THE GREAT I AM

How do we know that in the

words for I proceeded forth and
came from God that Jesus is not
speaking of His pre-existence, a
birth before He came into this
worldbut rather only to His birth
in Bethlehem? Because the context of this verse is speaking about
His earthly origin. This verse is in
reply to the accusation that He
came not by a virgin birth but
through fornication. Ye do the
deeds of your father. Then said they
to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even
God. John 8:41.
By their relationship to Abraham,
the Jews were claiming God as their
Father. But Jesus denied that the
Jews were children of Abraham. He
said, Ye do the deeds of your father.
In mockery they answered, We be
not born of fornication; we have one
Father, even God. These words, in
allusion to the circumstances of
His birth, were intended as a thrust
against Christ in the presence of
those who were beginning to believe
on Him. Jesus gave no heed to the
base insinuation, but said, If God
were your Father, ye would love Me:
for I proceeded forth and came from
God. 4
To show them that He, in reality,
had the power to make them free
from sinin other words, to create
them freeJesus claimed the Old
Testament term for the eternal
Presence to Himself. He said,
Before Abraham was, I am John
8:58. And how did the Jews reveal
that they understood Him to be
implying that He was the I AM of
the Old Testament? Then took they
up stones to cast at him: but Jesus
hid himself, and went out of the
temple, going through the midst of
them, and so passed by. John 8:59.
Why was it that they picked up
stones to stone Him? What did they
understand by His words? This is
clarified in a later experience: I and
my Father are one. Then the Jews
took up stones again to stone
him. Jesus answered them, Many
good works have I shewed you from
my Father; for which of those works
do ye stone me? The Jews
answered him, saying, For a good
16

work we stone thee not; but for

blasphemy; and because that
thou, being a man, makest thyself
God. John 10:3033.
Our Saviour says, Your father
Abraham rejoiced to see my day:
and he saw it, and was glad (John
8:56). Fifteen hundred years before
Christ laid off His royal robes, His
kingly crown, and left His position of
honor in the heavenly courts,
assumed humanity, and walked a
man among the children of men,
Abraham saw His day and was
glad. Then said the Jews unto him,
Thou art not yet fifty years old, and
hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus
said unto them, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, Before Abraham was, I
am (verses 57, 58). . . .
Christ was using the great
name of God that was given to
Moses to express the idea of the
eternal presence. 5
Silence fell upon the vast
assembly. The name of God, given
to Moses to express the idea of
the eternal presence, had been
claimed as His own by this
Galilean Rabbi. He had announced
Himself to be the self-existent
One, He who had been promised to
Israel, whose goings forth have
been from of old, from the days of
eternity. Micah 5:2, margin. 6
The Pharisees were horrified at
this declaration of Christs, Before
Abraham was, I am. They were
beside themselves with rage that
[He] should express such awful
blasphemy, claiming to be the I am.
They would have stoned Him then
and there, but the I AM blinded
their eyes that they should not see
Him, although He went out of the
temple, passing through their very
midst. As Jesus passed through the
multitude, He saw a man who had
been blind from his youth, and
healed him. 7

Is Jesus the Jehovah of the

Old Testament?
Among the many descriptions of
Jehovah in the Old Testament,
Isaiah gives some very clear insight
and connection to the New Testament Saviour.

Creator and Rock in the

wilderness
For example, this Jehovah is
the One that formed or created
Israel. But now thus saith the Lord
that created thee, O Jacob, and he
that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not:
for I have redeemed thee, I have
called thee by thy name; thou art
mine. Isaiah 43:1. Notice the context again of LORD (YEHOVAH)
and His being the Creator.
Not only did He create Israel,
but it is He that gave them water in
the wilderness. The beast of the
field shall honour me, the dragons
and the owls: because I give waters
in the wilderness, and rivers in the
desert, to give drink to my people,
my chosen. Isaiah 43:20.
This same Jehovah is also
called the Rock in Isaiah 44:8 (margin): Fear ye not, neither be afraid:
have not I told thee from that time,
and have declared it? ye are even
my witnesses. Is there a God beside
me? yea, there is no God [Rock]; I
know not any. And who was the
Rock that followed Israel in the
wilderness and gave them water?
Moreover, brethren, I would not
that ye should be ignorant, how that
all our fathers were under the cloud,
and all passed through the sea; and
were all baptized unto Moses in the
cloud and in the sea; and did all eat
the same spiritual meat; and did all
drink the same spiritual drink: for
they drank of that spiritual Rock
that followed them: and that Rock
was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:14.
If we accept the New Testament as
inspiration, we must conclude that
the Creator of Israel, the Rock in
the wilderness (YEHOVAH) is one
of the names that can be applied to
Jesus Himself.

Saviour and Alpha and

Omega
But Isaiah did not end with merely that point. He further states that
this same Jehovah is called the
Saviour of Israel. For I am the Lord
thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy
Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom,

and Omegaand again, the term

Jehovah can apply to Him.
For this very reason, as stated
in this section, Jesus is none other
than God with us. Behold, a virgin
shall be with child, and shall bring
forth a son, and they shall call his
name Emmanuel, which being
interpreted is, God with us.
Matthew 1:23.

Does Jesus have life in

Himselfor does He obtain
it from Someone else?
One of the attributes of the I
AM, or Jehovah, is that He selfexists. Naturally we now ask the
question, Does Jesus have life in
and of Himself? Or does He obtain
it from Someone else?

The New Testament, under

divine inspiration, declares the following: In him was life; and the life
was the light of men. John 1:4.
Jesus also has some startling
revelations concerning this point
Himself. For as the Father hath life
in himself; so hath he given to the
Son to have life in himself. John
5:26. Jesus saith unto him, I am
the way, the truth, and the life: no
man cometh unto the Father, but by
me. John 14:6. Since He is the life,
He has power to resurrect. Jesus
said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth
in me, though he were dead, yet
shall he live. John 11:25.
If Christ did not have life in and of
Himself, He would not have the
power to resurrect or recreate others.
But He has this power, for He can

Ethiopia and Seba for thee. Isaiah

43:3. For that matter, He, the only
God, is the ONLY Saviour. Ye are my
witnesses, saith the Lord, and my
servant whom I have chosen: that ye
may know and believe me, and
understand that I am he: before me
there was no God formed, neither
shall there be after me. I, even I, am
the LORD; and beside me there is
no saviour. Isaiah 43:10, 11.
These same terms are applied
to Jesus in the New Testament. The
name of Jesus itself means Saviour.
And she shall bring forth a son,
and thou shalt call his name Jesus
[Saviour]: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21
(margin). For this reason there is
salvation only in His name. Neither
is there salvation in any other: for
there is none other name under
heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12.
Since Jehovah is the only Saviour,
and since Jesus is our only Saviour,
we must conclude that the term
Jehovah can be applied to Jesus.
Isaiah does not stop with that. He
continues his prophetic word concerning Jehovah as being the first and the
last. Hearken unto me, O Jacob and
Israel, my called; I am he; I am the
first, I also am the last. Mine hand also
hath laid the foundation of the earth,
and my right hand hath spanned the
heavens: when I call unto them, they
stand up together. Isaiah 48:12, 13.
Who is the first and the last in
the New Testament? I am Alpha
and Omega, the beginning and the
ending, saith the Lord, which is, and
which was, and which is to come,
the Almighty. Revelation 1:8. He is
called here the Almighty. Who is
this? He is the One for Whom we are
all waiting. And, behold, I come
quickly; and my reward is with me,
to give every man according as his
work shall be. I am Alpha and
Omega, the beginning and the
end, the first and the last.
Revelation 22:12, 13. And who is this
that shall reward every man? For
the Son of man shall come in the
glory of his Father with his angels;
and then he shall reward every man
according to his works. Matthew

recreate us even now so that we as

sinners might have life, and that more
abundantly. He that hath the Son
hath life; and he that hath not the Son
of God hath not life. These things
have I written unto you that believe
on the name of the Son of God; that
ye may know that ye have eternal life,
and that ye may believe on the name
of the Son of God. 1 John 5:12, 13.
This very fundamental nature of
Christ gives Him the right to save us
from our sins and give us eternal life.
If He did not possess eternal life in
and of Himself by nature, He would
not have eternal life to give us. For
that very reason, He made this
unprecedented statement as to why
He was to go to the grave. Therefore
doth my Father love me, because I
lay down my life, that I might take it
again. No man taketh it from me, but
I lay it down of myself. I have power
to lay it down, and I have power to
take it again. This commandment
have I received of my Father. John
10:17, 18. He was authorized by the
Father Himself to give this statement
to the world. To have life original,
unborrowed, underived is reserved
for the nature of the Deity. The Jews
understood this point clearly when
Christ presented this issue. As a
result, they told Him their intentions
in no uncertain terms: For a good
work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou,
being a man, makest thyself God.
John 10:33.
This origin of life is the very
nature of Jesus. Still seeking to
give a true direction to [Marthas]
faith, Jesus declared, I am the resurrection, and the life. In Christ is
life, original, unborrowed, underived. He that hath the Son hath life.
1 John 5:12. The divinity of Christ
is the believers assurance of
eternal life. He that believeth in
Me, said Jesus, though he were
dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall
never die. Believest thou this? 8
Christ did not in any way obtain
life from anyone else. He had it originally. He did not borrow it, nor did
He derive it from anywhere else. It is
for this reason and this reason alone
that He can lay down His life and
18

then take it up again. For this reason

an angel or any other being who did
not have original life in and of himself could not have come to this
earth to be mans substitute. They
would have nothing to offer as far as
salvation is concerned. Not one of
the angels could have become surety
for the human race: their life is
Gods; they could not surrender it.
The angels all wear the yoke of obe-

sinless One, will save every son and

daughter of Adam who accepts the
salvation proffered them, consenting
to become the children of God. The
Saviour has purchased the fallen
race with His own blood.
This is a great mystery, a mystery that will not be fully, completely
understood in all its greatness until
the translation of the redeemed
shall take place. Then the power

In His divinity Christ possessed

the power to break the bonds of
death. He declares that He had life in
Himself to quicken whom He will.
dience. They are the appointed messengers of Him who is the Commander of all heaven. But Christ is
equal with God, infinite and omnipotent. He could pay the ransom for
mans freedom. He is the eternal
self-existing Son, on whom no yoke
had come; and when God asked,
Whom shall I send? He could reply,
Here am I; send me. He could pledge
Himself to become mans surety; for
He could say that which the highest
angel could not sayI have power
over My own life, power to lay it down,
and . . . power to take it again. 9
How could someone take his
life from the grave if He were dead?
The answer is in the verses we
have already read. A mere man did
not come to save us from sin and its
penalty; it was God manifested in
the flesh. Deity was combined with
humanity. Humanity can die, deity
cannot die. This is the very nature of
God; He must live.
Was the human nature of the
Son of Mary changed into the divine
nature of the Son of God? No; the
two natures were mysteriously
blended in one personthe man
Christ Jesus. In Him dwelt all the
fullness of the Godhead bodily.
When Christ was crucified, it was
His human nature that died. Deity
did not sink and die; that would
have been impossible. Christ, the

and greatness and efficacy of the

gift of God to man will be understood. But the enemy is determined
that this gift shall be so mystified
that it will become as nothingness.
When the voice of the angel was
heard saying, Thy Father calls thee,
He who had said, I lay down my life,
that I might take it again, Destroy this
temple, and in three days I will raise it
up, came forth from the grave to
life that was in Himself. Deity did
not die. Humanity died, but Christ
now proclaims over the rent sepulcher of Joseph, I am the resurrection, and the life. In His divinity
Christ possessed the power to
break the bonds of death. He
declares that He had life in Himself to
quicken whom He will.
I am the resurrection, and the
life. This language can be used only
by the Deity. All created things live by
the will and power of God. They are
dependent recipients of the life of
the Son of God. However able and
talented, however large their capabilities, they are replenished with life
from the Source of all life. Only He
who alone hath immortality,
dwelling in light and life, could
say, I have power to lay down my
life, and I have power to take it
again. All the human beings in our
world take their life from Him. He is
the spring, the fountain of life. 10

they might have life, and that they

might have it more abundantly 12
So what actually happened when
the angel called the Son of God from
the tomb of Joseph? When the voice
of the mighty angel was heard at
Christs tomb, saying, Thy Father
calls Thee, the Saviour came forth
from the grave by the life that was
in Himself. Now was proved the truth
of His words, I lay down My life, that I
might take it again. . . . I have power
to lay it down, and I have power to
take it again. Now was fulfilled the
prophecy He had spoken to the
priests and rulers, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it
up. John 10:17, 18; 2:19. 13
Jesus responded to the Fathers
call by the life that was in Himself.
Over the rent sepulcher of Joseph
Christ had proclaimed in triumph, I
am the resurrection, and the life.
These words could be spoken
only by the Deity. All created
beings live by the will and power
of God. They are dependent recipients of the life of God. From the
highest seraph to the humblest animate being, all are replenished from
the Source of life. Only He who is
one with God could say, I have
power to lay down My life, and I
have power to take it again. In His
divinity, Christ possessed the power
to break the bonds of death. 14
Our only hope of eternal life
rests in our becoming partakers of
the divine nature, having escaped
the corruption that is in the world
through lust. 2 Peter 1:4. If we do
not experience the new birth, of
having our fallen human nature
unite with and partake of His divine
nature, we have no hope. It is this
same union of natures that gives us
the hope of the resurrection. But if
the Spirit of him that raised up
Jesus from the dead dwell in you,
he that raised up Christ from the
dead shall also quicken your mortal
bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in
you. Romans 8:11. Jesus had this
divine nature naturally, and through
Him we partake of it.
The voice that cried from the
cross, It is finished, was heard
among the dead. It pierced the walls
of sepulchers, and summoned the

sleepers to arise. Thus will it be

when the voice of Christ shall be
heard from heaven. That voice will
penetrate the graves and unbar the
tombs, and the dead in Christ shall
arise. At the Saviours resurrection a
few graves were opened, but at His
second coming all the precious
dead shall hear His voice, and shall
come forth to glorious, immortal life.
The same power that raised
Christ from the dead will raise
His church, and glorify it with Him,
above all principalities, above all
powers, above every name that is
named, not only in this world, but
also in the world to come. 15
This is why eternal life is to
know both the Father and the Son.
And this is life eternal, that they
might know thee the only true
God, and Jesus Christ, whom
thou hast sent. John 17:3.
My dear friend: As you have
been prayerfully studying this article, I ask you this question, Do you
know Jesus as your personal
Saviour? Do you know Him as the
Author of eternal life for this sincursed world? If there has been any
doubt concerning this in your mind,
I ask you at this time, to bow your
knees before the throne of grace
and accept Him into your life as
both Saviour and Lord. And then,
together with Thomas, you can
acknowledge Jesus as My Lord
and my God. John 20:28.

THE GREAT I AM

This is quoting 1 Timothy 6:16:

Who only hath immortality, dwelling
in the light which no man can
approach unto; whom no man hath
seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
When Jesus came to this sinful,
cursed earth, He had to veil His
eternal divinity with the garb of
humanity or else we could not have
endured the sight. In contemplating
the incarnation of Christ in humanity, we stand baffled before an
unfathomable mystery, that the
human mind can not comprehend.
The more we reflect upon it, the
more amazing does it appear. How
wide is the contrast between the
divinity of Christ and the helpless
infant in Bethlehems manger! How
can we span the distance between
the mighty God and a helpless
child? And yet the Creator of
worlds, He in whom was the fulness
of the Godhead bodily, was manifest
in the helpless babe in the manger.
Far higher than any of the angels,
equal with the Father in dignity
and glory, and yet wearing the
garb of humanity! Divinity and
humanity were mysteriously combined, and man and God became
one. It is in this union that we find
the hope of our fallen race.
Looking upon Christ in humanity, we
look upon God, and see in Him the
brightness of His glory, the express
image of His person. 11
This is why the eternal God had
to mysteriously become man, had to
be combined with humanity. For this
reason Jesus was the manifestation
of that eternal life that was always
with the Father. That which was
from the beginning, which we have
heard, which we have seen with our
eyes, which we have looked upon,
and our hands have handled, of the
Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and
bear witness, and shew unto you
that eternal life, which was with the
Father, and was manifested unto
us). 1 John 1:1, 2.
Christ was invested with the
right to give immortality. The life
which He had laid down in humanity, He again took up and gave to
humanity. I am come, He says, that

WATCHFOR WHAT?

Wa t c h Fo r W h a t ?
N awaiting our
Lords soon
return, He has
plainly bidden us
to watch. Watch
for what? Every
day we see signs
fulfilling before our eyes. Are we
therefore to focus strongly on the
daily news to analyze every stage in
the unfolding of final events? Or is
Christ calling us to watch in a different way?
[Christ] had specified certain
signs that were to show when His
coming was near, and had bidden
His disciples watch and be ready.
Again He repeated the warning,
Watch therefore; for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein
the Son of man cometh. Then He
showed what it means to watch for
His coming. The time is to be spent,
not in idle waiting, but in diligent
working. This lesson He taught in
the parable of the talents. 1
It would behoove each of us to
closely re-examine the chapter entitled Talents in the book Christs
Object Lessons to recall how much
accountability we truly have toward
the Lords cause in these last days.
As we utilize our talents for God rather
than for self, we will also realize
some other factors about watching:
The judgment is now passing in
the sanctuary above. For many
years this work has been in
progress. Soonnone know how
soonit will pass to the cases of the
living. In the awful presence of God
our lives are to come up in review. 2
In the future great watchfulness
will be needed. There is to be among
Gods people no spiritual stupidity.
Evil spirits are actively engaged in
seeking to control the minds of
human beings. Men are binding up in
bundles, ready to be consumed by
the fires of the last days. 3
[Many] do not see the importance of self-knowledge and selfcontrol. They do not watch and pray,
lest they enter into temptation. If

20

they would watch, they would

become acquainted with their weak
points, where they are most likely to
be assailed by temptation. With
watchfulness and prayer their weakest points can be so guarded as to
become their strongest points, and
they can encounter temptation without being overcome. Every follower
of Christ should daily examine himself, that he may become perfectly
acquainted with his own conduct.
There is with nearly all a neglect of
self-examination. 4
Many are lifting up the soul
unto vanity. No sooner does a person imagine that he possesses any
talent which might be of use in the
cause of God than he overestimates
the gift and is inclined to think too
highly of himself, as though he were
a pillar of the church. The work
which he might do with acceptance
he leaves for someone else with
less ability than he considers himself to possess. He thinks and talks
of a higher station. He must let his
light shine before men; but instead
of grace, meekness, lowliness of
mind, kindness, gentleness, and
love shining in his life, self, important self, appears everywhere. 5
We need now to watch and
pray as never before, lest we fall
under the power of temptation and
leave the example of a life that is a
miserable wreck. We must not, as a
people, become careless and look
upon sin with indifference. The
camp needs purging. All who name
the name of Christ need to watch
and pray and guard the avenues of
the soul; for Satan is at work to corrupt and destroy if the least advantage is given him.
My brethren, God calls upon
you as His followers to walk in the
light. You need to be alarmed. Sin is
among us, and it is not seen to be
exceedingly sinful. The senses of
many are benumbed by the indulgence of appetite and by familiarity
with sin. We need to advance nearer heaven. We may grow in grace

and in the knowledge of the truth.

Walking in the light, running in the
way of Gods commandments, does
not give the idea that we can stand
still and do nothing. We must be
advancing.
In self-love, self-exaltation, and
pride there is great weakness; but in
humility there is great strength. Our
true dignity is not maintained when
we think most of ourselves, but
when God is in all our thoughts and
our hearts are all aglow with love to
our Redeemer and love to our fellow
men. Simplicity of character and
lowliness of heart will give happiness, while self-conceit will bring
discontent, repining, and continual
disappointment. It is learning to
think less of ourselves and more of
making others happy that will bring
to us divine strength. 6
Perfection of character is
attained through exercise of the faculties of the mind, in times of
supreme test, by obedience to
every requirement of Gods law. 7
Not in freedom from trial, but in
the midst of it, is Christian character
developed. Exposure to rebuffs and
opposition leads the follower of
Christ to greater watchfulness and
more earnest prayer to the mighty
Helper. Severe trial endured by the
grace of God develops patience, vigilance, fortitude, and a deep and
abiding trust in God. It is the triumph
of the Christian faith that it enables
its follower to suffer and be strong; to
submit, and thus to conquer; to be
killed all the day long, and yet to live;
to bear the cross, and thus to win the

crown of glory. 8

books, which I had been selling through an SDA
health food store. I was shocked and speechless
to have come to see my home church stooping
down so low! It was the worse crisis of my life
like my world had come to an end, and I had
nowhere to turn.
A few months later, God laid my 80-year-old
husband to rest to relieve him of this stressful turmoil. Eventually, through my daughter Trudy and
her husband, Douglas Severt, I became interested
and started studying into the beliefs of the
Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement. It did
not take long at all before I could see exactly who
and where the true last-day Seventh-day Adventist
remnant church was. It was a glorious moment for
me when I saw that God still has His church alive
and well.
The only way I can express how I felt at that
moment is thinking how excited and happy the disciples and Mary Magdalene must have been when
they saw that Jesus was still alive and was talking
to them. They had seen how the people had treated Jesus and taken His life on the cross. That terrible act had taken away a great Friend, and their
Saviour. The day of the crucifixion must have
made them feel like the end of the world. But
Maryfinding Jesus had come out of the tomb,

A PUBLIC TESTIMONY

ACTIVITY IS LIFE!

Activity is Life!
by H. E. Kirschner, M.D. (Adapted)

F all the basic

essentials of health,
probably one of the
most important is
exercise. For here is
one of natures most
effective and powerful weapons against disintegration,
atrophy, and diseases.
Action is a law of our being.
Every organ of the body has its
appointed work, upon the performance of which its development
and strength depend. The normal
action of all the organs gives
strength and vigor, while the tendency of disuse is toward decay
and death. . . .
Inactivity is a fruitful cause of
disease. Exercise quickens and
equalizes the circulation of the
blood, but in idleness the blood does
not circulate freely, and the changes
in it, so necessary to life and health,
do not take place. The skin, too,
becomes inactive. Impurities are not
expelled as they would be if the circulation had been quickened by vigorous exercise, the skin kept in a
healthy condition, and the lungs fed
with plenty of pure, fresh air. This
state of the system throws a double
burden on the excretory organs, and
disease is the result. 1
To the chronic invalid, nothing
so tends to restore health and hap-

22

piness as living amid attractive

country surroundings. . . . Plans
should be devised for keeping
patients out of doors. For those who
are able to work, let some pleasant,
easy employment be provided. . . .
Exercise in the open air should
be prescribed as a life-giving necessity. And for such exercises there is
nothing better than the cultivation of
the soil. Let patients have flower
beds to care for, or work to do in the
orchard or vegetable garden. As
they are encouraged to leave their
rooms and spend time in the open
air, cultivating flowers or doing
some other light, pleasant work,
their attention will be diverted from
themselves and their sufferings. 2
It is my opinion that vigorous
exercise in the open air is just as
essential for those who are well as
for those persons who are sick.
Although occupied most of my life
with professional duties and heavy
responsibilities until very recently, I
have always taken time to grow a
garden. In the care of flowers,
herbs, vegetables, and fruit trees I
have found welcome relief from the
pressing duties of my profession. I
attribute much of my good health
and vigor at the advanced age of
82, to the fact that I have always
taken time out each week for gardening.
And may I remind my readers,
that in my gardening activities I
have followed a very ancient and
time-hallowed precedent. You will
recall that our first parents were
privileged to live in a garden. In
Genesis 2:8, we read: And the Lord
God planted a garden eastward in
Eden; and there he put the man
whom he had formed. In the
Garden of Eden, writes Ellen G.
White, were trees of every variety,
many of them laden with fragrant
and delicious fruit. There were lovely vines, growing upright, yet pre-

senting a most graceful appearance, with their branches drooping

under their load of tempting fruit of
the richest and most varied hues. It
was the work of Adam and Eve to
train the branches of the vine to
form bowers, thus making for themselves a dwelling from living trees
covered with foliage and fruit. 3
To the dwellers in Eden was
committed the care of the garden, to
dress it and to keep it. Their occupation was not wearisome, but pleasant and invigorating. God appointed
labor as a blessing to man, to occupy his mind, to strengthen his body,
and to develop his faculties. In mental and physical activity Adam found
one of the highest pleasures of his
holy existence. 4
In my opinion, the multiple benefits to be derived from useful outdoor exercise are of even greater
importance to us who are living
today, than they were 6,000 years
ago when our primeval ancestors,
because of their great vigor and
vitality, lived to the extraordinary
age of nearly 1,000 years! At any
rate, we should profit by their good
example, and spend more of our
leisure time in the garden! If we do,
great will be our reward in increased
health and longevity.
From my own personal experience stretching over more than
four-score years, I have found that,
next to gardening, WALKING is the
very best body-building and healthpromoting exercise. I am in full
agreement with George Macauley
Trevelyan, famous British educator,
who declared, I have two doctors
my left leg and my right. When my
body and mind are out of gear, I
know that I shall have only to call in
my two doctors, and I shall be well
again!
The above observation by our
English friend may seem to border
on over-simplication, but as I

of exercise are the best in the end.

The first and best of all the natural exercises is WALKING. The
simple exercise is absolutely essential for normal health; and the more
one walks the more he will benefit
his body. When one begins to walk,
sickness begins to go. The motion
of walking causes every one of the
internal and digestive organs to
swing. This swinging motion gently
stimulates their function.
Walking increases the peristaltic action of the entire intestinal
tract, and causes the food to pass
through this long tube of about thirty
feet with dispatch, so that it reaches
the rectum in a copious, moist, and
lubricated form. . . . Unless one does
a sufficient amount of walking he will
be disturbed by the presence of gas,
which will form in any variety of diet.
So get out and begin to walk! Work
up to it gradually, increasing the distance each day. Walk to and from
business. If you want to discuss
some affairs, take the person you
wish to talk to, out for a a walk.
In her authoritative work,
Counsels on Health, Ellen G. White
corroborates the scientific testimony
presented above, as
follows: Those who
are feeble and indolent should not yield
to their inclination to
be inactive, thus
depriving themselves of air and
sunlight, but should
practice exercising
out of doors in walking or working in the
garden. They will
become very much
fatigued, but this will
not injure them. . . . It
is not good policy to
give up the use of
certain muscles
because pain is felt
when they are exercised. The pain is
frequently caused by
the effort of nature
to give life and vigor
to those parts that
have become partially lifeless through

inaction. The motion of these longdisused muscles will cause pain,

because nature is awakening them
to life.
Walking, in all cases where it is
possible, is the best remedy for diseased bodies, because in this exercise all the organs of the body are
brought into use. . . . In some cases,
want of exercise causes the bowels
and muscles to become enfeebled
and shrunken, and these organs
that have become enfeebled for
want of use will be strengthened by
exercise. There is no exercise that
can take the place of walking. By it
the circulation of the blood is greatly
improved. 5
Yes, my friends, whether you
are sick or well, if your daily schedule does not include time out for
walking, you are missing one of
natures most precious blessings.

review the mature testimony of leading physicians and writers on health

topics, I am convinced that educator
Trevelyan may have hit the nail
squarely on the head.
Dr. Paul Dudley White, worldfamous heart specialist and physician to former President Dwight D.
Eisenhower, explains the beneficial
physiological effects of walking in
the following words:
Good muscle tone in the arms
and particularly in the legs, resulting
from regular exercise, maintains an
improved circulation in the veins.
Since the veins have valves, which
in good condition prevent the blood
from going the wrong way, the compression of the veins by the skeletal
muscles helps to pump the blood
back to the heart. Soft, unused muscles do not accomplish this as well.
Exercise also improves the
tone of the diaphragm, which results
in its better function as the piston of
the pump, not only for bringing oxygen to the lungs with the removal of
carbon dioxide, but also for the suction of the blood into the heart.
It is interesting to know that Dr.
White considers walking at a fair
pace the easiest exercise of all to
help maintain good circulation and
to keep the body in a condition of
health and physical fitness. . . .
Hippocrates . . . mentions walking
40 times in one chapter on digestive
diseases; and he prescribed brisk
walks, short walks, early-morning
walks, after-dinner walks, and night
walks! Brisk walks were recommended to reduce weight, earlymorning walks for emotional disturbances.
Unfortunately for all of us
especially for our youthwalking
has become a lost art and a forgotten sport here in the United States.

CHILDRENS CORNER

Martin, the Errand Boy

ITTLE Martin was a poor boy, who earned
his bread by doing errands. One day he was
returning from a town which was quite distant
from his home, and feeling tired, he sat down
under a large tree, near a motel, to rest.
While he sat there, eating a piece of bread
which he had taken for his dinner, he saw a
sharp-looking Cadillac drive up, in which sat a young
gentleman and his teacher.
Martin looked at them very attentively, and then
looked at his crust of bread and his ragged clothes and
old cap; and he could not help sighing as he said, half
aloud, Oh, dear! If I were only that young gentleman,
instead of being poor Martin, the errand boy! How I wish
I could change places with him!
The teacher happened to overhear what Martin had
said, and he told it to his pupil, who, leaning out of the
car window, beckoned Martin to come near.
So, little boy, said he, you would like to change
places with me, would you?
Oh, pardon me, sir, replied Martin; I meant no
harm by what I said.
I am not angry with you, said the young gentleman.
On the contrary, I am quite willing to change places
with you.
Oh, now you are joking! cried Martin. No one
would wish to change places with me, and least of all, a
gentleman like yourself. I have to walk many miles every
day, and seldom have anything but dry bread or potatoes to eat, while you can ride in your nice Cadillac, and
have whatever you desire.
Well, said the young gentleman, If you will give me
all you have that I have not, I will in turn give you everything that belongs to me.
Martin was startled, for he did not know what to say;
but the teacher desired him to answer.

MOVING?

Please let us know.

Do you agree to
change? said he.
Oh, yes, said
Martin, I do indeed,
if you are serious.
How the people in
town will wonder to
see me coming back
in this fancy
Cadillac! And Martin
laughed at the idea.
The young gentleman then called
his servants, who
opened the car door
and helped him to get
out. But what was Martins surprise in seeing that both
his legs were quite crooked, and of no use to him!
He had to lean upon crutches for support; and on
looking at him more closely, Martin saw that his face
was pale and thin, like that of a person who is often
sick. The young gentleman smiled kindly on Martin, and
asked, Well, friend, do you still wish to change situations with me? Would you, if you could, give up your
rosy cheeks for the sake of driving in a Cadillac, and
wearing a suede jacket?
Oh, no, not for the world! said Martin.
And I, said the young gentleman, would gladly be
poor if I only had the use of my limbs; but as it is Gods
will that I should be lame and sickly, I try to be patient
and cheerful, and to be thankful for the blessings He
has left me. And you, my young friend, must do the
same, and remember that if you have poor clothes and
hard fare, you have health and strength, which are far
better than a Cadillac and suede jacket, and all that
money can buy.
