Assignment 1 Section 1 Only 20162017/1 (100%)

Due Date: Friday, 7 October 2016, During Class
Question 1
Force, F = 950 N causes twisting & bending of a 20 mm diameter shaft fixed to a support at
the origin of the reference system at A. The shaft is made of ductile material of AISI 1050
hot-rolled steel. In actuality, the support may be an inertia that we wish to rotate, but for the
purposes of a stress analysis we can consider this a static problem.
a) Calculate stress components at the critical location on shaft AB.
b) Determine the factor of safety based on the stress components at the critical location
on shaft AB for yielding using maximum shear stress and distortion energy theories.
Compare and comment about the results.

Question 2
Forces, Fx = 0 N, Fy = 850 N and Fz = 450 N cause twisting & bending of a 25 mm diameter
shaft fixed to a support at the origin of the reference system at A. The shaft is made of ductile
material of AISI 1095 hot-rolled steel. In actuality, the support may be an inertia that we wish
to rotate, but for the purposes of a stress analysis we can consider this a static problem.
a) Determine the stress components at the critical location on shaft AB.
b) Determine the factor of safety based on the stress components at the critical location
on shaft AB for yielding using maximum shear stress and distortion energy theories.
Compare and comment about the results.

Question 3
A crank shown is made of AISI 1045 hot-rolled steel and is loaded with a forces,
Fx = -350 N, Fy = 850 N and Fz = 450 N which cause twisting and bending of the 25 mm
diameter shaft fixed to a support at A. The distance from A to G on shaft AGB is 45 mm. In
actuality, the support may be an inertia tendency to rotate, however for the purposes of a
strength analysis, consider it to be statics problem. The yield strength is the same in
compression as in tension.
a) Calculate stress components at the critical location at G on shaft AGB.
b) Determine the factor of safety based on the stress components at the critical location
at G on shaft AGB for yielding using maximum shear stress and distortion energy
theories. Compare and comment about the results.
