says about.
Newton Newman is in the fourth grade at Appleton Elementary School. He is proud of his brother, Chris
Newman, the star football quarterback of Fillmore High School. At dawn on the last Friday of October,
Newt prepares breakfast for his family. While coffee is brewing, Newt reads the sports section of the local
newspaper, the “Appleton Sentinel” with Chris's picture and then prepares breakfast. In about 40 years,
Merrimac High won all the matches except the last two. In the last two years, Fillmore High School won
with Chris's help. When Newt's father comes, Newt gives him the newspaper to read about Chris, but he
answers his call as he unrolls his blueprints on the kitchen counter. Newt puis a plate of sausages and eggs
and a cup of coffee near his father.

Behind the
frozen walls,
Really? I don't know what
Vi do without you,
Newt's mother comes with a hammer and a dozen
‘wooden “For Sale” signs for the houses she wants
to sell. She asks Newt where the keys to the three-
bedroom house on Elwood Street are. He reminds
her that they are behind the frozen wafites in the
fridge. She goes to the fridge and gets them,

bringing « gallon
of coleslaw or ice
cream for thirty?
“Ten bags of potato
chips, Mom.
Newt is telling his mother to read about Chris when
Mrs, Carole Hennessey calls to ask what to bring for
their pregame tailgate barbecue. Newt reminds his
‘mother that she has to bring 10 bags of potato chips,
‘Then he gives her a plate of eggs and sausages but
she does not want them. She sips her coffee as she
walks from room to room talking to Carole.
