Chapter 8

8.0 WATER PROOFING

8.1 Introduction of water proofing

The main aim of water proofing is that to preventing the water going in to the concrete
structure. Water proofing is done in our site at lean concrete, Pile caps, lift well, water sump,
water tank, bathroom areas, balconies, & roof slab. Now we are doing water proofing of lean
concrete & pile caps. Bituplus & prime are materials of water proofing.
Bituplus - 4mm thick torch membrane with polyester reinforcement.
Prime

- Poly prime

8.2 Surface preparation

On a horizontal surfaces a lean concrete is laid to receive the waterproofing. The surface
of lean concrete is prepared smoothly with level.
Vertical retaining formworks of the RCC structures such as beams, lift walls, retaining
walls, etc are constructed out of block work. The surface of block work is prepared with
uniform and no areas protruding.
To avoid 90 angles at corners and edges of pile caps, filet is introduced. Relevant
drawings are attached. Fillet will be done by 1:3 mortar mix and to obtain smooth
surface sponch sheet is used
At external corners the 90-degree corner is to be eliminated by shampering these edges.
Surface cleaning will be done in order to remove all loose particle dust and dust
collected at corners of pile cap bottom.
Next moisture test will be done to satisfaction of consultant, if moisture content is in
satisfaction rate. Floor is ready for Primer application (for moisture test sound system or
light system will be used.)

8.3 Primer application

Over dried level surface and vertical walls Polyprime primer is applied without mixing any
liquid or materials. Generally brush or roller brush are used. It will act as the key coat to
receive the torch membrane. The primer will be 20kg cans and purpose of apply primer is dust
free fresh surface.
Now it is ready to apply membrane. The membrane applying areas depend on the construction
joint and depth of the pile caps.

8.4 water proofing procedure

8.4.1 Application of membrane over pile caps
1st corner collar is pasted at corners. It will help to other layers to smooth bending.
Next, bottom of the pile cap is covered with membrane. The waterproofing membrane
on pile cap up to outer will be extended up to outer reinforcement of pile and by torch
application it will paste to the pile surface.
Next, wall of pile cap waterproofing will be done. Next over the ground slab lean
concrete surface treated with membrane. The laying direction depending on site
condition.

8.4.2 Water proofing of lift pit

Lift pit external wall waterproofing will be done as follows.
Base lean concrete and waterproofing (as previous )
Where the lean and waterproofing of base will be extended up to 200mm from the side
and apply protective 15mm thick 1:3 mortar layer. Because base waterproofing will be
lapped with concrete wall water proofing membrane.
