Introduction
z

How well does simulation match with reality ?

z Compare simulation results and measurements for quasi-identical
configurations

How important are the differences between simulation results and

measurements ?
z Compare with measurement uncertainties :
z obtained by laboratory round-robin measurements
z introduced by the imperfectness of the test sites
z due to repeatability precision

Explain the reason of such dispersion in simulation and

measurement results

EMC Europe 2008, September 4-8, Hamburg, Germany

Overview
z

Comparing simulation and measurement results for

z

Different field incidences (front, back, left, right)

Different polarizations (horizontal, vertical)

Different equipment locations (engine, passenger compartment,

trunk)

3 vehicles (2006, 2007, 2008)

Comparison of measurement results

z

In 3 different laboratories

With different antenna sets and test setups

Explain the differences introduced by the test or simulation

Conclusions
z

Similarity of simulation and measurement results

z Same trends in low and high frequencies
z No predominant worst test / simulation conditions (orientation, polarization,
equipment position, )
z Globally simulation values are systematically above measurements
z Resonances are emphasized in simulation results
z Several resonances in the lower frequency band are not found in the measurements

If it wasnt for some unfound resonances and some differences of level in the
upper band, simulation results can be considered as representative as another
laboratory result

Major differences are introduced by

z Absence of losses in the dielectrics, especially at high frequencies
z Differences between position of the seats and the steering column (which isnt the
case for the engine compartment)
z Difficulties in setting the parameters of the athermic windscreen
z Non representative connections of the steering column, the doors, the hood, or the
trunk to the chassis
