natures color show
Four of the best fall color tours in Northern
Michigan have their starting points in our
own backyard. And each one can be driven on
a lazy afternoon, ranging in length from 20 to
64 miles.
The self guided tours, with printable maps,
include picnic areas, the Harrietta Fish
Hatchery, the Caberfae Scenic Outlook and
Dutchman Tree Farms.
To view these local tours, visit: www.cadillacmichigan.com
For longer excursions, Pure Michigan has
put together 27 of the best color tour routes
throughout the state. To see the complete list
with maps and a guide to stops along the way,

We have highlighted two of the more extensive color

tours that sweep through the Cadillac area and a third
route that launches from Frankfort.

LAKE CITY, GRAYLING, AND TORCH LAKE

By starting in Lake City and taking M-55 west, you can
visit three parks: North and/or South Higgins Lake State
Parks and the Lake Margrethe State Forest Campground.
After heading north to Grayling, the Wellington Farm

Trailing the

fall colors
When it comes to fall color tours, theres no place quite
like northern Michigan. There are a variety of nature
trails around the greater Cadillac area that can be done
either as a multi-day hike or as an easy walk after dinner
all of which provide a beautiful variety of fall colors.
Local outdoorsman Dave Foley said he expects the best
time for color tours will be from Oct. 5 through Oct. 15
this year.
For those looking for a picturesque hike, Foley said one
of the best places to go is the Manistee River Trail.
If I were going to pick one great hike, Id drive to Red
Bridge on the Manistee River, park there and walk on
the Manistee river trail for an out-and-back, Foley said.
Youve got the the trees reflected in the water and its really something.
Foley said you can walk for as long as you wish along
this trail, then walk back. However, the Manistee River
Trail connects with the North Country National Scenic
Trail to form a 23-mile loop trail that can be traveled on
for a couple days as well. According to the United States
Forest Service, the best places to access the loop are from
the Marilla and Upper River Road Trailheads for the
North Country National Scenic Trail and the Red Bridge
and Seaton Creek accesses for the Manistee River Trail.
The Manistee River Trail also features a waterfall near
the northern end of the trail is very popular with hikers;
and, according to the Forest Service, the Manistee River
Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail connector is also the site of the largest wooden suspension
bridge in Lower Michigan.
Foley said those looking for an easy after-dinner color
walk around Cadillac may enjoy visiting Waldeck Island,
an 11-acre preserve located on Stone Ledge Lake, just
south of Cadillac off M-115.
Another easy trail is the Heritage Nature Trail, which
starts at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center
and is about 2.5 miles long.
Thats a very easy trail to walk, very flat, Foley said.
They have these nature boards that talk about the area
right in front of you and it has a beautiful viewing stand
you can climb up on.
Foley also said time of day can play a role in ensuring

12

On the go - Cadillac News

you see the most vivid fall colors.

The first two and last two hours of the day are the best
times to go, he said. The sun at that low angle is a golden light and when you paint that against a tree of red, its
just magnificent.
Heres other trails to go hiking on for a color tour:
Cadillac Pathway This trail is about three miles
east of the Cadillac city limits. The southern entry, located near 13th Street, has one, two, five and 10.5 mile loops.
The north end of the trail starts from the parking lot off
Seeley Road just past Boon Road and features one, two
and four mile loops.
The Big M This trail is located off M-55 between Cadillac and Wellston and features nearly 40 miles of trails
for biking, hiking and cross-country skiing in loops of
varying lengths. The trail is located off of M-55 at 3500
Udell Hills Road in Wellston. A map is available on the
Huron-Manistee National Forest website.
Mackenzie Trail This trail is mainly used by bikers, but is also open to hikers. It is located just northwest
of the Caberfae ski area and has a variety of loops. There
are signs at each junction with a You Are Here map. It is
located at 7585-7781 West 38 Road in Cadillac.

Leaves are starting to change, weather is getting crisp
and Halloween is just around the corner. That means
that local businesses like Geers Farm Pumpkin Patch
near McBain, Pahls Pumpkin Patch near Buckley, and
Norman Farms in Tustin are gearing up for some fall
fun.
What better time to head out and enjoy the season as
well as pick up a pumpkin and other fall decorations?
You can get lost in a corn maze or sample some delectable doughnuts and apple cider. For those who think that
sounds like a perfect weekend afternoon, youre in luck,
because the Cadillac area has four pumpkin patches
from which to choose.

GEERS FARM PUMPKIN PATCH

Once again, Missaukee County residents and visitors
will be able to enjoy picking out the perfect pumpkin at
Geers Farm near McBain.
Every weekend in October from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the
pumpkin patch at the farm will be open. There also are
wagon rides from noon to 5 p.m. People can pick a pumpkin, get some cider, homemade doughnuts or fudge and
purchase straw bales and corn stalks for decorations.
There are farm animals for children to pet, a hay stack

14

for kids to climb and a corn maze to explore. You also can
have a little fun firing the apple cannon.
The weekend of Oct. 29 and Oct. 30, Geers Farm will
host a costume party where the first 200 kids who are
dressed in costume will receive a prize.
For more information about the pumpkin patch, call
the farm at (231) 825-4032 or log onto www.geersfarms.
com. Geers Farm is located at 5600 W. Geers Road.

PAHLS PUMPKING PATCH

Pahls Pumpkin Patch in Buckley also will be open for
business offering all of your fall favorites. The patch, located across from the Buckley Old Engine Show grounds,
has been open for more than 10 years and will be open
seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. beginning
Oct. 1. The patch will be open through Halloween.
There are farm animals for children to see, corn mazes
to explore, a straw maze for children, pony rides, a goat
walk, and pumpkins, squash, straw, gourds, Indian corn
and corn stalk bundles for sale and more. There also is a
new Candy House full of goodies and activities. On the
weekends, there are wagon rides train rides and a concession stand. Entrance fee is $2 but children 4 and under

ThankYou
Veterans Day is one federal holiday that stands for
something a little more in the Cadillac area.
Communities throughout the area will pause to recognize veterans on Friday, Nov. 11 originally Armistice
Day.

Cadillac
The Cadillac Area Honor Guard observes Veterans Day
at each of three sites within Cadillac.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., Veterans Memorial Stadium on Linden Street is the first stop. Once there, veterans
sing the national anthem, perform a 21-gun salute, play
Taps, lay a wreath, say a prayer and lower the flag to
half-staff.
At approximately 11 a.m. the ceremony is repeated at
the nearby Veterans Memorial on the shore of Lake Cadillac near the Keith McKellop Walkway. Following that,
a final stop is made at the flagpole and World War I gun
across from the Wexford County Courthouse, 437 E. Division St.
AMVETS Post No. 110 will conduct a special ceremony

at Lakeview of Cadillac joined by the Cadillac Area

Honor Guard. The event scheduled for 2 p.m. will include
a flag raising ceremony, guest speaker, and gathering in
the chapel to recognize resident veterans.

Cadillac High School

The light of dozens of electric candles illuminates the
darkened gymnasium in a solemn ceremony that has
long been a Cadillac High School tradition.
Visitors must take their seats by 9:45 a.m. before students file in to take their seats. The ceremony generally
is coordinated by the senior class, with the Honors Choir
and members of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard also participating.

Evart
Guyton Park, at the corner of Fifth Street and Main
Street, is where veterans from VFW Post No. 7979 and
AMVETS Post No. 11 jointly conduct a ceremony at 11
a.m.

The Gopherwood series is

scheduled to be concluded
May 13 with a house concert
by Zak Bunce.

Diverse mix of folk, rock n roll music

highlighted each year at Gopherwood series
Soulful music hearkening back to Americas humble
roots emanates from the Elks Lodge in Cadillac all winter
long courtesy of the Gopherwood Concert Series.
Musicians representing a wide range of genres have
performed at Gopherwood, which began more than 30
years ago as a celebration of American folk roots.
Organizer Paul Brown said the concert series got its
unique name because the original founders all used to
heat their homes with wood. Hence, Gopherwood (go for
wood) was chosen.
In the past, notable performers have included Vance
Gilbert, Mose Allison, Richie Havens, the Red Sea Pedestrians and Joshua Davis.
During the last few years, Brown said attendance at the
shows has increased as a result of more widespread exposure on social networks.
He said at least two shows sold out during the 2013-2014
season.
For this years series, which opened Oct. 1, some hometown performers will return and some new faces will
grace the Gopherwood stage for the first time.
The opening show of the season featured Missaukee
County native Seth Bernard performing a house concert.

Gopherwood series is scheduled to be concluded May 13
with a house concert by Zak Bunce.
Tickets can be purchased at Toy Town in downtown

A Christmas Story among

Footliters productions this season
Drama enthusiasts fear not, Footliters have a full lineup of plays planned for this winter.
The 53rd season begins in October with a rendition of
The Girls in 509.
A perfect play for an election year two ladies are discovered in the back suite of a once fashionable hotel in
New York. They have been there since 1932 when Hoover
lost the election.
They have vowed to remain secluded until a Republican
is elected. The press and the National Chairmen of the
Republican and Democratic parties descend upon the ladies, members of one of the countrys oldest and richest
families. The ladies defy both politicians and face eviction and disgrace.
Performances are slated for 7 p.m. on Oct. 14, 15. A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Oct. 15.
A Christmas Story, based on the motion picture, will
be performed by the Footliters in December.
A Christmas classic 9-year-old Ralphie desperately
wants to find a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the
Christmas tree.
He pleads with his mother, his teacher and even Santa
Claus himself. Of course, hes told, Youll shoot your eye
out! Furnaces explode, father wins a hideous lamp and
tongues are frozen to lamp posts.
Performances are slated for 7 p.m. on Dec. 2, 3, 9, and 10.
A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Dec. 10.

26

On the go - Cadillac News

In April, the Footliters will perform Five Tellers Dancing in the Rain.
Southern sass, tears and charm engage as five bank tellers speak their hearts and brew lots of coffee in the break
room of a small bank in Mississippi.
This play eavesdrops on the conversations of women
about the men in their lives. Its a play about broken arms
and broken hearts and about finding strength and selfrespect through friendships with those who have been
down that road before.
Performances are slated for 7 p.m. on April 7, 8, 14, and
15. A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. on April 15.
To round out the season, Footliters will delight audiences with a rendition of Little Shop of Horrors in June.
A Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi musical, the meek
floral assistant Seymour stumbles across a new breed of
plant he names Audrey II a foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who promises Seymour fame and fortune
to as long as he keeps feeding it blood.
Performances are slated for 7 p.m. on June 16, 17, 23,
and 24. A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 24.
For more information, go to cadillacfootliters.com/ticket.html. Tickets are available at The UPS Store, Brinks
Custom Framing, Peebles, Majestic Hair Design in Lake
City, and After 26 Cafe.
All of the shows are scheduled to take place at the Cadillac High School Auditorium.

Christmas in the
Park kicks off
holiday
happenings
After a day of shopping or work, many
people in Cadillac will again come out
to the city park to sing carols, drink hot
chocolate and see Santa Claus.
On Friday, Nov. 25 Cadillac is scheduled
to kick off the holiday season with the
annual Christmas in the Park event. As in
past years, carols will be sung, the Salvation Army will sell hot chocolate and, of
course, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus make
their annual appearance.
First Baptist Church of Cadillac Rev.
Dave McMahon said things will be very
similar to events from years past.
This years festivities are scheduled
to begin at 5:30 p.m. The event also will
feature the lighting of the community
Christmas tree. The City Park and the
Keith McKellop Walkway will also be illuminated.
The event is free and will take place
rain, shine or snow. This year, kids who
visit with Santa will receive a goody bag.
In addition to Christmas in the Park,
Cadillac will be a great place for shopping
and other events on Thanksgiving weekend.
The first event Saturday is the third annual Toy Town Toy Trot. During the last
four years the 5K event raised more than
$25,000 for Toys for Tots. The 5K run/
walk will start on Lake Street between
the Rotary Pavilion and the City Park and
will head north around Lake Cadillac.
Cost to participate is $25.
Downtown merchants also will be open
and participating in Small Business Saturday. In years past, many downtown Cadillac businesses offered an open housetype atmosphere that could include musicians playing in some of the stores.
For more information about these
events go to www.cadillacmichigan.com.

Marion jumpstarts holiday season with

Christmas event in November

MARION Holiday cheer gets a head start in November with the Marion Christmas kickoff celebration.
On Saturday, Nov. 26, two days after Thanksgiving,
the sleepy village comes alive with holiday festivities
ranging from a visit from Santa to horse-drawn carriage
rides.
The kick-off to the Celebration of Life and Love event
will start at 5:30 p.m., with childrens activities such as
cookie decorating and letters to Santa.
Horse-drawn sleigh rides will be available, goodies will
be served and carols will be sung.
At 7 p.m., trees along main street will be lit and kids
will be able to visit with Santa, who will pass out treats.
The event is free for anyone to attend.
Businesses decorate trees along downtown for the
event, making the experience even more special for the
kids and their parents.
Anyone who attends the kickoff who would like to donate cash toward next years event will be able to do so at
a drop-off box.
For more information about the Christmas Kick-off,
call the Marion Chamber of Commerce at (231) 743-2461.

EVART The Christmas Carnival is set for Dec. 3,

from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Evart Depot and Crossroads Community Church.
The family event officially kicks off the communitys
month long celebration of Christmas in a Small Town,
said Downtown Development Authority Director Al
Weinberg.
This multi-faceted carnival will combine both outdoor
and indoor events. Weinberg said there is euro bungee,
pony rides, Wheres The Wisemen (a live Wheres Waldo type event), hot dogs, hot chocolate, Christmas caroling, hay rides, face painting, crafts and a variety show.
Weinberg said it is the official beginning of Christmas
in a Small Town, which is a series of events in Evart,
such as Christmas concerts and more.
This is the special Christmassy thing that kicks it all
off, Weinberg said of the Christmas Carnival. Everything else is gravy.
Organizers are expecting between 900 and 1,200 people
to attend the carnival.
This is one of the largest community events, Weinberg said.
Resident Shannon Fromer said she went two years ago
and it was amazing.
It is a great jump-start to the holiday season, Fromer
said, noting that it helped ease her stress level for the long
shopping lines expected in the days ahead.
She said she didnt try any jumping, but took part in
crafts and caroling.
Its just a very nice event and getting to see so many
people you dont normally get to see regularly, Fromer
said.
Weinberg said the euro bungee is a big draw for some.
Its where a person is connected to a bungee cord and
jumps on a trampoline. They can do back flips, front flips
while secured to a bungee cord.
This is a pretty exciting event, Weinberg said of the
carnival. This event is a ginormous event for the chamber of commerce and Crossroads Community Church.

Evergreen Festival
draws Santa & crowds

REED CITY Sip hot chocolate, socialize with friends,

enjoy a large craft show, watch a parade and greet Santa
and Mrs. Claus Nov. 25 when the annual Evergreen Festival returns with a Home for the Holidays theme.
The festivities begin Friday, Nov. 25 for the Evergreen
Festival Arts and Crafts Show at Reed City High School.
The event is tentatively set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. but organizer Cathy Eichenberg said that could change.
Booths were still available as of press time. If interested, call (231) 832.5517 and speak to Cathy Eichenberg.
Its always festive and there are many Christmas
things to do, Eichenberg said.
She said for the past 20 plus years the arts and crafts
show has been coupled with the longstanding one-day
Evergreen Festival.
The Evergreen Festival kicks-off with the annual
parade. The parade lines up between noon and 12:30 at
Sears and Upton streets and steps off at 1 p.m. There are
prizes for parade participants, but the categories arent
yet identified.

32

On the go - Cadillac News

The downtown packs full of people, said Reed City

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Chastity
Eads, noting an estimated 500 people attended the Evergreen Festival in 2015. We went through 275 cookies in
the first 45 minutes of the event.
Eads said the attendance usually fluctuates based on
the weather.
Following the parade and the arrival of Santa and Mrs.
Claus, there are cookies and refreshments at the Reed
City Depot, which is turned into a gingerbread house.
There, people can pet Santas reindeer and take photos
with Santa.
The event usually goes until 3 p.m.
This is a unique chamber-sponsored event, Eads said.
She noted that anytime a small town does a festival,
businesses and sponsors make such events possible.
We are grateful for all they do, Eads said.

MANTON Santa and Mrs.

Claus will take a few hours out
from their Christmas preparations
to help kick off the holiday season
in Manton.
The first Saturday in December is
the Manton Christmas Tree Lighting and Santa and Mrs. Claus will
be there. The couple will arrive at
the pavilion at Manton Station at 6
p.m. Though, because the reindeer
have to stay at the North Pole to
conserve their energy for Christmas Eve, Santa and Mrs. Claus
will arrive in a unique way: by fire
truck.
Once we get the blast of the sirens from the fire barn, we turn on
the Christmas tree so Santa knows
where to find us, said JoAnn
Treiber, secretary for the Manton
Area Chamber of Commerce.
And, of course, a big Christmas
celebration isnt complete without
cookies for Santa. Treiber said
there will be cookies, hot cocoa and
a bonfire for those who attend as
well.
Of course, event attendees are
welcome to bring a camera to get
pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
There will also be a raffle drawing
that evening as part of a fundraiser
for the Manton Area Chamber of
Commerce, Treiber said. Tickets
are available at local businesses
and, if there are still some left, will
also be available for purchase at
the event. Only 1,000 tickets were
printed, though.
First prize for the raffle is $1,500.
Treiber said around 200 people
usually attend the event.
Its a fun way to get together in
the winter time, she said.

Caberfae Peaks - new triple chair lift

HOXEYVILLE During the summer, Caberfae Peaks
installed the highest chairlift in Northern Michigan.
The new, Doppelmayr triple chair has a top elevation of
1561-feet and provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding Manistee National Forest.
The triple chairlift will serve the North Peak complex,
allowing easy access to both the green runs on the back
side (Smiling Irishmen, Easy Street, Shelter) and the
more advanced runs on the front side, (Canyon, Lift Line,
and No. 1 Cruiser.) The new lift will increase uphill capacity and reduce lift lines at the bottom of North Peak.
Caberfae Peaks is home to the highest lift-served peaks
and some of the states biggest vertical drops. With 34
runs, skiers and riders will enjoy the best advanced, intermediate and novice ski runs in the state.

Skating rink, fireplace new additions

to downtown Cadillac this winter
CADILLAC Downtown Cadillac will look like a scene
out of a Norman Rockwell painting this winter.
A skating rink and fireplace will be open to the public as
features of the new Plaza at Cadillac Commons, located to
the west of Elk Avenue.
The Plaza also features a splash pad, redesigned parking
lot area and an archway welcoming visitors into city park.
Project engineer Connie Houk said the 30 by 52.5-foot
skating rink likely will be positioned in the splash pad
area but can be moved to several different spots within
Cadillac Commons, including underneath the farmers
market once it is built and in front of the Rotary Pavilion.
Houk said an idea she has is to set up the skating rink in
front of the Pavilion and let people skate while playing the
Disney movie Frozen on the projector screen.
Cadillac Community Development Director John Wallace said the plan is to set the skating rink up soon after
Thanksgiving.
Although the skating rink will be set up during the win-

Fun all Winter!

ter months, Houk said since the ice is made out of a synthetic material, it could be used year-round, if desired.
Wallace said the synthetic material has a very similar
feeling to ice when being skated upon, but with slightly
more resistance.
You might notice being tired out a little sooner than
you normally would skating on ice, Wallace said.
Visitors will have to bring their own skates and equipment when using the ice rink but Wallace said the city
may eventually start a rental program.
The fireplace will emit about 250 BTUs of energy. It will
be pretty hot, Houk said. Which is why we needed to
build a barrier between those outside and the fire.
There are benches placed several feet away from the
structure so people can sit down and enjoy the warmth on
a cold day.
While it will not burn wood, Wallace said there likely
will be a visible flame inside the fireplaces hearth. Separating the flame from the outside is glass on all sides.

Some changes
expected for 2017

NASF

CADILLAC The North American Snow Fest is

again going to hit Cadillac this winter, but it will be a
little different.
As of press time, the NASF Committee had yet to
meet and also was looking at filling vacancies including
its chairman and treasurer. As a result, Cadillac Area
Visitors Bureau Executive Director Joy VanDrie said
many things are up in the air. That said, there are some
things that could be shared.
The event is always the first weekend of February, so
the 2017 NASF will be from Feb. 2 through Feb. 4. While
there is a lot of unknowns, there will be tons of events
happening that people have come to expect, like the
chili cook-off and the Oasis Polar Dip. She added the
snowmobile races on Lake Cadillac also should be part
of the event in 2017.
With El Nio making winter a little more mild last
year, organizers of the event are hoping for better
weather in 2017. Whatever Mother Nature throws their
way, organizers will deal with it and the NASF will be a
success.
Although things are still in the planning stages, in addition to the events such as the chili cook-off, the NASF
will also have the kids races, as well as the 5K race.
As the event gets closer there should be more detail
about the various events. As the event nears check out
www.nasfcadillac.com for more information.

Where to get

on the tra
il

The Cadillac area provides a variety of scenic trails for

snowmobilers who are headed out for just an hour or for
those looking to head out for a day of riding.
Volunteers for Cadillac Winter Promotions keep several local trails in tip-top shape for people go to riding on.
As far as skill level, we tend to pride ourselves on grooming the trails in a way that it can be for all skill levels, said
Martin Richard, president of Cadillac Winter Promotions.
We see children out there. We see all various types of riders.
The staging areas they keep up are located at:
Cadillac Trailhead for White Pine Trail (east of M-115 on
44 Road)
Cadillac West Trailhead for Trail 35 (south of M-55 on 33
Road)
27 Road Trailhead for Trail 6 (north of M-55 off 27 Road
west of Cadillac)
Caberfae Trailhead for Trail 6 (off M-55 with entrances
off South 13 Road)
Boon Trailhead for Trail 37 (south of Boon Grocery parking lot)
Tustin Trailhead for White Pine Trail (on the south side
of 20 Mile Road)
Bristol Trailhead for Trail 358 (on the north side of 20
Mile Road behind the Bristol Store)
Richard said the Boon Trailhead for Trail 37 is one of the
most popular staging areas.
Boon heading north towards Mesick is a really good scenic route, he said. Its very, very popular.

40

On the go - Cadillac News

He added that those looking to ride for a little bit then stop
for a bite to eat or to rest may like trail 37 as well.
Richard said those looking for a longer ride may enjoy the
White Pine Trail since it goes down through Tustin and LeRoy toward the southern part of the state.
The Tustin area is also very scenic and beautiful, he said.
Richard also said the various trails that are maintained by
Cadillac Winter Promotions have confidence signs on them
to indicate you are still on the trail as well as You Are Here
maps in various locations.
We do have signs out there that point for gas, food and
lodging as well, Richard said.
Trail maps can also be purchased at a variety of hotels
and restaurants locally, including Pilgrim Village and Boon
Store. For a complete list of where to purchase a map or for
further details about the trails, visit www.cadillacwinterpromotions.org.
Arjay Schopieray, deputy for Wexford County Sheriffs Department, said another trail that is very easy to get to locally
is the Trailhead for Trail 5, which is just south of Lake Cadillac off of Hector Road. He said to get there, take M-155 to 44
Road; then go east o 44 Road.
Judy Wing, treasurer for Cadillac Winter Warriors Snowmobile Club, said The Cadillac trails are some of the best
trails in the northern lower peninsula and they are all very
easy, very enjoyable. You set your own speed. You just need to
be careful to not exceed your own capability. Theyre all beautiful and theyre all fun.
Maps of other trails can by found on a county-by-county
basis at www.michigan.gov/dnr.

Have fun, stay safe

when snowmobiling
Its all fun and games until someone gets hurt.
Dean Molnar, assistant chief of the DNR Law Enforcement Division, said there are a few things you can do
to help ensure your snowmobile riding stays fun and
games and that no one gets hurt.
First of all, never ride alone.
You could have something as simple as a breakdown
on the trail. You could have an accident where you get
injured, Molnar said. Always having a riding partner is
essential to having a good experience.
In addition, he suggests telling someone else where you
are going, who you are going and when you will be home.
Secondly, be prepared and dress appropriately. You
dont want to get caught out in a storm, so be sure to
check the weather before leaving. Wear protective clothing such as a helmet, gloves and eye protection.
Finally, Molnar advises that snowmobile riders never
cross frozen bodies of water; however, people still do
it. So, if you are planning to go across a frozen body of
water there are a couple of things you should bring: rope
(to throw to your riding partner in case he or she falls
through), ice picks and, if possible, a snowmobile suit
with a floatation device.
Molnar said to stay away from inlets and outlets.
Also, do not ride across the water in a single file. This
is for two main reasons. Firstly, the water could become
unstable with the weight of one person after another. The
other reason is because it can create a potential dominoeffect if the first person goes through the ice and those
behind cant move in time.
Should you go through the water, Molnar said you
should actually keep your snowmobile suit on. Many
people take it off because they think it will weigh them
down, but thats not the case.
Your snowmobile suit will hold air, he said. The
air trapped inside it will help keep (you) buoyant for a
while.

Classy cross country

ski trails abound
Northern Michigan is known for its cross country ski trails
and the Cadillac area does not disappoint in this regard.
A number of trails in the area are free to the public because
they are maintained by groups of volunteers who pack the
snow and make sure the trails are clear of debris.
Others require a small fee but both provide a unique and
top-notch cross country ski experience.
The following is a list of some well-known trails throughout
the area.

Cadillac Pathway

Over the years, an 11.3-mile stretch of trails and loops

groomed for cross country skiing has become a stopping
ground for thousands of travelers and locals.
Outdoors enthusiast Dave Foley said the Cadillac Pathway is perhaps the most popular cross country ski trail in
the area.
The trail features a wide range of skill-level variety, from
easy to advanced.
The Cadillac Pathway is located in the Pere Marquette
State Forest, three miles east of Cadillac with two access
points, one on 13th Street and the second on Seeley Road
just north of Boon Road.
It does not cost anything to use the trail.
For more information, call (231) 775-9727.

Mackenzie Trail, Caberfae Peaks

From the Caberfae Peaks downhill ski area, those looking

to cut a cross country path can head out on this trail system, which offers 10 miles of levels and loops.
Foley said he has fond memories of skiing this trail while
his son hit the downhill trail at Caberfae.
Foley said this trail has something for everyone, from advanced loops to those for beginners.

Heritage Nature Trail,

near Mitchell State Park, Cadillac

Near that canal between lakes Cadillac and Mitchell, the

Heritage Nature Trail begins behind the Carl T. Johnson
Hunt and Fish Center on M-115.
The three-mile trail is groomed and skiers are asked to
stay on designated trails in order to preserve the wilderness near the trail.

Ice fishing

is one of many classes offered

at Carl T. Johnson Hunt and Fish Center
CADILLAC Summer isnt the only time of year when
things are going on at the Carl T. Johnson Hunt and Fish
Center.
All winter long, the center will be hosting a variety of
programs and clinics.
Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Instructor
John Zakrajsek said most of the events planned for the upcoming winter have to do with fishing.
On Jan. 17, the center will host a hard water fishing
school. Zakrajsek said hard water fishing is another way
of saying ice fishing.
The class will teach beginners how to ice fish for all species, from crappie to pike and walleye.
On Feb. 11, the center will put on an ice fishing seminar
and youth fishing contest. Free fishing weekend is Feb. 1819. Additional information on this event will be posted on
the DNRs website closer to the date.
In March and April, Zakrajsek said they will be hosting

44

On the go - Cadillac News

a steelhead clinic and on May 20, fly fishing will be the

topic of another clinic.
The season will close out June 4 with a bass fishing class.
Each clinic costs $25 to attend. Zakrajsek said that anyone interested in participating should sign up beforehand
on their website by clicking on the Education and Outreach tab.
They can also call the center at (231) 779-1321 for additional information.
Throughout the winter, Zakrajsek said a DNR instructor
should be available on weekends to go out with beginner
ice fishermen.
Fishermen interested in going out with an instructor
should call the center a few days in advance.
Weekly events also will be held throughout the winter,
including a decoy-carving program on Thursday nights
and a fly-tying class during the month of February on
Wednesdays.

Dont let your safety slip

when youre on the ice
CADILLAC The Cadillac area boasts some of the
best inland lakes for ice fishing, but any ice angler will
tell you there are some things you should know before
you head out on the ice.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will
never comment on ice conditions, but they will gladly
share some tips to ensure your ice fishing experience is a
fun and safe one.

Welcome to

TusTin

Before Heading Out On The Ice

Ice conditions vary from lake to lake. Find a good local

source a bait shop or fishing guide that is knowledgeable about ice conditions on the lake you want to fish on.
Purchase a pair of ice picks or ice claws, which are
available at most sporting goods stores.
Tell a responsible adult where you are going and what
time to expect you back. Relaying your plan can help save
your life if something does happen to you on the ice.

What To Know About The Ice

You cant always tell the strength of ice simply by its

look, its thickness, the temperature or whether or not
it is covered with snow.
Clear ice that has a bluish tint is the strongest. Ice
formed by melted and refrozen snow appears milky,
and is very porous and weak.
Ice covered by snow always should be presumed unsafe. Snow acts like an insulating blanket and slows the
freezing process. Ice under the snow will be thinner
and weaker. A snowfall also can warm up and melt existing ice.
If there is slush on the ice, stay off. Slush ice is only
about half as strong as clear ice and indicates the ice is
no longer freezing from the bottom.
Be especially cautious in areas where air temperatures
have fluctuated. A warm spell may take several days
to weaken the ice; however, when temperatures vary
widely, causing the ice to thaw during the day and refreeze at night, the result is a weak, spongy or honeycombed ice that is unsafe.
The DNR does not recommend the standard inchthickness guide used by many anglers and snowmobilers to determine ice safety. A minimum of four
inches of clear ice is required to support an average
persons weight on the ice, but since ice seldom forms
at a uniform rate it is important to check ice thickness
with a spud and ruler every few steps.

When life gives

you snow,
go sledding

Northern Michigan sees its fair share of snow and what

better way to take advantage of this abundant natural resource than grabbing a sled and having some fun.

Missaukee Mountain
For a free and fun sledding excursion, Missaukee Mountain is the place to be.
There is one hill at the Missaukee County location dedicated to sledding. There is no charge to use the hill, but
there are no equipment rentals, either.
Missaukee Mountain, 6500 W. Walker Road (M-66), offers
downhill and cross-country skiing as well as sledding. It
is open weekends and school holidays. For more information, call (231) 839-7575.

Diggins Hill
For many years, Diggins Hill has been a winter destination for locals.
While it has changed over the years, one thing has re-

46

On the go - Cadillac News

mained constant if there is snow on the ground, there is

sledding to be done at Diggins Hill.
The city no longer maintains Diggins Hill, so sled at your
own risk. The hill is located near McKinley Elementary
School, 601 E. North St.

SpringHill Camps
Beginning in January people will be able to take advantage of a weekly sledding opportunity in Evart.
Every winter SpringHill Camps hosts weekly events. The
weekly events are weather-dependent and usually begin
after Christmas. Once they begin, the events are 2 to 5 p.m.
every Sunday.
The Evart camp, located at 7717 95th Avenue, is a nonprofit Christian camp and retreat ministry that offers multiple outdoor opportunities. Sledding is a big draw during
the winter.
The hill used is 150 feet wide and 400 feet long. There also
is a magic carpet that takes sledders to the top of the hill.
