Pastors Corner
You know you're deep into fall when the office air conditioners start to come out of the
windows at church! As the air cools down, the rhetoric keeps heating up in the
presidential contest. Almost exactly 242 years ago, the founder of Methodism, John
Wesley, had something important to say about voting. Here's what he said in his Journal
on October 6, 1774: "I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election,
and advised them
1. To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy
2. To speak no evil of the person they voted against, and
3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.

Obviously in our American system of voting, #1 on his list would be illegal, but the other two speak
volumes to the current pre-election climate. We are not to bash either candidate, nor are we to bash the
supporters of those candidates. Wesley's words cut right through me, because I am guilty! I'm sure
whether we've actually uttered things out loud or spoken them only in our hearts, we're all somewhat guilty
of speaking ill of the side we don't support and the people who support them. With the election now less
than six weeks away, we can repent and set a better example for the divided electorate around us. If
nothing else, we can pray that God will lead us to vote the way we need to vote. It's not about convincing
ourselves and others that God is on "our side," but making sure through prayer and discernment that we
are on God's side.
This Sunday, October 2, marks two important events for us. First, it is World Communion Sunday when we
eat and drink in remembrance of what Christ did for us with brothers and sisters all around the world. Our

choir will sing at the 8:30 a.m. service, under the direction of Julie
Montes de Oca, who was introduced as our new choral director at both
services this past Sunday. I will pray a prayer of blessing over both Julie
and the choir as they begin their work together. Second, it is our annual
charge conference in the afternoon at our church at 1:30 p.m. Our
District Superintendent, Dr. Irving Cotto, will be on hand as will 7 other
churches in our Mission Connexion to celebrate our past year of ministry
and look ahead to 2017. You are welcome to join us! This Sunday will
also be the third in my seven-part sermon series on Serving from the
Heart, which is also the title of our all-church study, currently underway. I
hope you can join us in worship and also in one of the study groups.

Read the Bible in a Year

This week we will be over three quarters of the way

through our program of reading the Bible in a year.
And I need to share with you, sometimes its not
easy. Its a book that was written in different
languages over thousands of years ago translated to English which
sometimes loses some of the meaning and tone of the original text. So
some of things in this Book, which might have been easy for people to
understand at the time are a mystery to us. We are challenged because
even if we have a Ph.D. in the culture of that time, we still cannot
understand the Bible unless God grants us the ability to do so.
So maybe we ask ourselves this question: Why do we read the Bible?
I believe one of the main reasons is that this is where we can find God
because this is how He chose to reveal Himself to us. So if were seeking
to know God, the path of our journey goes through this book.
And it does things to us. We read it, we hear it, and it changes us. It
starts to accomplish Gods purpose in us and it strengthens us in our
faith.
One of my favorite scriptures in the Old Testament that puts all this
into perspective for me comes from our readings this week from the book
of Isaiah: "As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not
return there until they have watered the earth and making it come forth
and sprout given seed to the sower and bread to the eater; so is my word
that goes out from my mouth. It will not return to me empty, but will
accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent
it." (Isaiah 55:10-11, NIV)
So hang in there because if we want to know Christ more deeply,
were definitely in the right place. So my friends - be encouraged and
read on.

ESUMC Women attend Collyde Summit

Under this theme of Even If, believers from all
denominations heard the message during the
Collyde Summit in Zarephath, NJ in
September. Men and women from all ages
and backgrounds not only were able to hear
from speakers like Lysa TerKeurst and Francis
Chan, but also were able to participate in
break out sessions from four different tracks:
Leadership; Justice, Culture and Redemption;
World Missions, Spiritual Gifts and Evangelism
and Worship and Creative Arts. Uniting
together under the common thread of growing
stronger in faith. participants had time for
praise and worship as well as seeing how God
is working in organizations like World Vision
and The Land of a Thousand Hills, who
provided free coffee through the
conference. With the theme of I AM, next
year's conference will be held September 15
and 16 at the Liquid Church in Parsippany,
NJ. Speakers are Mark Batterson, Ann
Voskamp, and Tim Lucas. For more

Fall is fast approaching, another

summer is behind us. This is the
season of change. The leaves
change, the temperature changes,
even our kids change - from pre-k to
k, grade school to middle school, middle to high school, high school to
college or the military or life, and so on.
I know I'll never forget that beautiful September morning 15 years
ago. I woke to a day filled with promise. How quickly that day
changed, not for me, but for us. For so many people that day stopped
being about me and became all about we. We watched together, we
held our breath together, we cried together and we prayed together.
On that September morning we became one nation. We didn't care
about things like where do you worship, how do you vote, what' your
race. Our brothers and sisters were hurting and we
cared. September 11th is now a day of service and
remembrance. Let's not forget those who gave so so much that day
and the days that followed.
Let's honor those who gave more than we could ever ask. Let's
continue to pray for them, their families, and today's active military
personnel.
If you know of a soldier we could highlight, please contact Randy
Johns (570) 476-5639 or superuncle113@yahoo.com
