We would like to listen and carry out reconnaissance of where
AMISOM forces are going to be deployed. We have come together
with the Deputy CDF (Chief of Defence Forces) who is also with us
and all the military, while the UN and others are inspecting the
locations where the electoral process will take place.

The aim was to meet the Federal state leaders and discuss with
them the electoral process for the upper house. We are also
assessing the security and how the deployment of AMISOM will
help secure the process.

As the chair of the Electoral Security Committee Taskforce, I and
my team are surveying the venues where the elections will be
held, to assess preparations for the elections. We are doing the
assessment with our brothers from AMISOM, given that the
deadline for the elections is fast approaching. So far we are
impressed with the findings from all sides because it takes joint
effort to ensure peaceful and safe elections.

Ever since the establishment of Galmudug State, the United
Nations and international partners could not operate safely but if
AMISOM deploys, the United Nations and other partners will be
able to operate.

Joint AMISOM and Somali government delegation visits


Galmudug to assess electoral process preparations

Adaado, 16 October, 2016 - A delegation comprising top officials


from the African Union (AU) and the Somali Federal Government last
week visited Adaado, in Galmudug, to assess preparations for the
electoral process.
The team led by the Force Commander of the African Union Mission
in Somalia (AMISOM), Lt. Gen. Osman Noor Soubagleh, and the
Deputy Chief of Defence Forces (DCDF) of the Somali National Army,
Maj.Gen. Ali Bashi Mohamed carried out inspections specific areas,
ahead of the planned deployment of AMISOM forces in the town for
the first time, to further stabilize the region.
The delegation, also comprising AMISOM Police Commissioner,
Anand Pillay, Somali Federal Police Force Commissioner , Maj.Gen.
Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Hamud, and the Chairman of the Federal
Indirect Electoral Implementation Team (FIEIT), Omar Mohamed
Abdulle, later held a meeting with the President of Galmudug State,
Abdikarim Hussein Gulled, who welcomed the planned deployment,
saying it will help secure the region.
In his remarks, while meeting Galmudug President, Gen. Soubagleh
noted that the issue of the electoral process and the planned
deployment of AMISOM forces in the area was central to the visit.
We would like to listen and carry out reconnaissance of where
AMISOM forces are going to be deployed. We have come together
with Deputy CDF (Chief of Defence Forces) of Somali National Army
and other officials, while the UN and others are inspecting the
locations where the electoral process will take place, Gen.
Soubagleh stated.
The FIEIT Chairman noted that the delegation was in Adaado to build
synergies and assess how the coordination between the local
authorities, Somali Police Force and AMISOM can help secure the
electoral process.
The aim was to discuss with the Federal state leaders and discuss
with them the electoral process for the upper house. We are also
assessing the security and how the deployment of AMISOM will help
secure the process, Abdulle observed.
Somali Federal Police Commissioner, Maj.Gen. Hamud, said they
were impressed with the findings regarding preparations for
elections in Galmudug.
As the chair of the Electoral Security Committee Taskforce, my
team and I are surveying the venues where the elections will be
held, to assess preparations for the elections. We are doing the
assessment with our brothers from AMISOM, given that the deadline
for the elections is fast approaching. So far we are impressed with

On his part, President Gulled said the deployment of AMISOM forces,
both military and police will greatly boost the fight against the AlShabaab and help stabilize the area, which has so far relied on its
own security institutions.

since the establishment of Galmudug state, the UN and international
partners could not operate safely, but if AMISOM deploys, the UN
and other partners will be able to operate, President Gulled.

AMISOM Police Training and Development Coordinator, Francis
Ayitey Aryee and the Senior Electoral Security Advisor, Integrated
Electoral Support Group/United Nations Assistance Mission in
Somalia, Brig. Gen. Anthony Howie.
Somalia is expected to elect a new president and federal
parliament in October and November, this year.
