Julieannys new block 8-Pointed Flower: Tutorial by mugginsquilts

Shall we begin? Ive chosen as my colors

A-Duckie
B-Eggplant
C-Dusty Green
Hook-5.5 mm (US I) works for me. Im an average to slightly loose worker and this block finished for me
at exactly 9 as written.
There are two parts of this block which may present issues. One is the Crochet 6 single crochet
together which isnt the standard way of doing it since you arent putting your yarn through all the
stitches involved. Just the first one and the last one.
The second one is the area where you are making chains behind 4 of the petals and subsequently
working INTO those chains for the next round.
RND 1(10 dc)standard issue
I used an adjustable loop; you can work it with the customary chain as the instructions say. Whatever
you like.

RND 2(20 dc)worked in the spaces between the dc, two in each.

RND 3(40 dc)worked in the spaces again, two dc in each.

Then a little fancy handiworkI like to take my end yarn and both Invisibly Join, and also run a little loop
in front of all the ch-3 down the line, so that it mimics dc there. Makes me happy! Finish off Color A.

RND 4(48 sc, 8 ch-5 loops)Color B--start with a sc into any stitch. Then chain 5 and sc again, into
that same stitch. Then sc into the next four st, and wash/rinse/repeat cycle until you reach the end.

RND 5(112 dc, 8 ch-3 sp)I call this a busy work round because by the time you are done, youll
want to take a breakJoin with a slip stitch and chain 3 instead of a double crochet, or use the
method shown which is using a sc and a ch-2 to mock a dc. Your choice. Then finish that petal.

Each petal has 7 dc, ch-3 in the tip, and 7 dc on the other side. Work a petal in every chain 5 loop. Make
sure you snug up the hook/yarn without leaving extra yarn as you go from petal to the next petal.
RND 5(8 petals)each of them has 14 dc and a chain 3 space in the tips

Round 6: (112 sc)

You have a starting chain 3 that you are now slipped into. You have 6 more double crochet up that
right side. You want to work in only FOUR of them before the corner, so slip along into the next one,
and then the next one after that, putting you into the 5th one from the corner. The instructions say
sc in next 4 styou might want to chain 1 first (I didnt), or just start single crocheting.
Work the 3 single crochet in the corner space as instructed, four sc down the left side and then
youll be working that unconventional sc dec over 6 st. Its easier than it sounds.
SC DEC OVER 6 ST
Pull up a loop in the next stitch as shown. Then count FOUR stitches that you MISS. Then the arrow
marks the one through which youll be pulling up the NEXT loop.

So you have THREE loops on your hook,

and youll just yarn over and pull through ALL of them, so you are left with sc dec over 6 stitches, but
with ONE loop left on hook. Well count that as ONE SC now. If you want to help yourself, I actually
would recommend putting a stitch marker in ALL 8 dec sc---it would be much easier to find them on the
next round.

ONE stitch where there were SIX.

Finish RND SIX in the same fashionsc in the four stitches leading up to the corners, 3 sc in the corners,
sc in the four stitches coming down from the corners, and working the decrease-6 over the next 6 dc in
the valley. Then slip to the first sc, or Invisibly Join whatever you like to do and Fasten off.

RND 7-- (60 sc, 24 ch)I worked this through the Back Loops, but you can do whatever you like. I
like the definition it gives the flower. Join Color B with a sc to any CORNER sc (the middle one of the
three sc in the corner). Work 2 more sc in that corner and then sc the next 6 stitches. If you did it
right, youll end out right in that decreased stitch from the last round.

Chain 6 LOOSELY and pop that chain behind the petal where it belongs.

Then sc into the first sc of the next petal. So you START each petal with a sc in the sc AFTER the
decreased one, and END each petal with a sc in the decreased one. If you marked them, this would be
easier. I like to eyeball itat any rate, it looks like this:

RND 8: (88 hdc, 4 ch-2 sp) This isnt a hard round, but working into those chains can be a little tricky.
Youll be glad you worked them LOOSELY (you did, didnt you?)

RND 9: (almost there, whew!!) (96 hdc, 4 ch-2 sp)the instructions tell you to slip into the corner
stitch. I didnt do that, and just started where I was, correcting the counts for myself at the end.
Your choice. (you only have to do 6 hdc instead of 7 at the end as you meet up with the first one if
you do it my way is alldont stress over it). I finished with my usual Invisible Join and little loop
over the ch-2 because it (well, you know MAKES ME HAPPY!!)

RND 10: (108 sc)easy enough. Join with a single crochet, and whip around the block, working 3 sc
in those corners, and picking up the back vertical loop of each loose cannon petal as you go, on the
stitches as indicated. I kept saying hmm, the math doesnt work out to put that in the middle, but

trusted the pattern, and visually, it DOES. Sotrust the pattern. And doesnt this just make you want
to work some fancy stitches around those petals to set them off? Because I know some of you will

HAVE FUN and BE HAPPY
