The Safety and Security Coordinator (SSC) reports directly to the Country Director (CD) and provides
safety and security support to post. The role of the incumbent is to augment and support, not assume
responsibility for, senior staff security-related functions (i.e., site inspection and selection, Peace Corps
Volunteer (PCV) site visits, etc.) consistent with the policies and procedures set forth by the agency.
Overall, the SSC has primary responsibility to monitor and maintain appropriate documentation
regarding post compliance with MS 270.
As designated by the Country Director, the incumbent may be the primary contact point with the Peace
Corps Safety and Security Officers (PCSSO), Safety and Security Desk Officers (SSDO), Embassy
security officials, and local law enforcement agencies in carrying out safety and security activities,
limited trainings, data compilation and analyses, and other relevant initiatives and responsibilities at
post.
In addition, under the direction of the Country Director, the incumbent will be available for emergency
preparation and planning, crisis management, and emergency response.
The incumbent must have sufficient English and local language skills to carry out the duties of the
position.
3. Participates in staff meetings, senior staff discussions, and other activities to present research compiled
on non-controversial changes in program policy and procedures as they relate to Volunteer safety and
security.
4. Organizes safety and security resources such as manuals, books, leaflets, pamphlets, slides, videos, and
memos and makes their contents and Peace Corps policies known to staff and Volunteers.
5. Regularly checks the crime reports/news along with weather for any serious weather conditions
e.g. cyclones, flash floods, etc. Forwards the information to the CD for distribution.
6. Maintains ongoing communication with people outside the staff at post to include:
SSCs from other posts for safety-related matters;
Local law enforcement to obtain crime updates and other information needed for the CD
and other post senior staff to use in determining the security of existing and potential
Volunteer sites;
Both the regional PCSSO and the Safety and Security Desk Officer in HQ to inform them
of problems and progress in the country.
7. Maintains the Duty Officer system (e.g., materials, training, and schedule).
8. Reviews local media reports with safety implications to be used for newsletter, site development and
training purposes.
9. Maintains post crime statistics and reviews trends.
Training:
10. Participates in the design, development of PST and IST sessions in the areas of personal safety and
security.
11. Participates in staff and guard safety and security training, as appropriate.
12. Facilitates established safety and security training modules such as warden training and any
other topics identified by the CD.
16. Provides advice to Program and Training team regarding site placements and/or Volunteer site
changes related to security concerns. Ensures that the safety and security portion of all site
history forms are filed and up-to-date.
Other Duties:
26. Performs other safety and security duties as assigned by the Country Director.
