STANDARD III: LEARNER-CENTERED TECHNOLOGY AND INFORMATION

ACCESS
Goal: To promote the success of all students and staff by facilitating the access, use
and integration of technology, telecommunications, and information systems to enrich
the curriculum and enhance learning.
For Standard 3 I rated the library as an overall Recognized, even though I had two
Acceptable ratings and two Recognized ratings. The librarian is efficient and thorough in
her facilitation of technology and is consistently involved in the campus integration of
technology. She is always willing to come to classrooms and give her expertise when
requested and does not hesitate to encourage teachers and students to improve their
technology skills.

Principle 1: The library media program provides a balanced, carefully

selected, and systematically organized collection of print and
electronic library resources that are sufficient to meet students
needs in all subject areas and that are continuously monitored for
currency and relevancy. (Correlates to NBPTS Library Media
Standards, Standard I, II, III, VI)
I rated the librarian/library program at Berry Middle School as an overall
Acceptable for Principle 1. The library contains approximately 11,000 texts
and other media, in a school of about 950 students. The CREW method is
used for weeding materials in the collection, which is less than 15 years old.
A total of 30 computers are active in the library and are often occupied by
students for research. For example, on one day this week, a 7th grade English
class was looking for information on various biographical texts.
Periodicals and newspapers do not have a huge focus in the library, though
there is a section that is dedicated to them. The librarian does allow students
to utilize the magazines while they are in the library, though she has stopped
allowing them to check them out because the students are not bringing them
back. I did not see a major metropolitan news source provided for staff or
students, though I am sure she could get one if requested.

Principle 2: The librarian models and promotes the highest standard

of conduct, ethics, and integrity in the use of the Web and other
print and electronic resources. (Correlates to NBPTS Library Media
Standards, Standard III, VI, IX)

For Principle 2, I gave the rating of Recognized. The librarian helps the staff,
in concert with the library, stay compliant with the current legislation and
any and all legal issues that could affect the library or the classrooms. If and
when a teacher requests materials, whether it be texts, audio, or video, the
librarian remains aware of the copyrights that are in place and will inform the
teacher to make sure unauthorized use does not occur. In regards to copyenabled equipment, there is not any available in the library so this part of
the principle does not apply. The librarian does provide training once a year
to the staff, usually at our beginning of the year meetings. A presentation of
the general copyright laws are shown along with the internet policies of the
district. Plagiarism is usually handled by teachers themselves, though at the
high school level, I understand that there is a district policy for how to handle
student plagiarism, though I do not believe that librarian is the one to cover
the information.
Principle 3: The librarian employs existing and emerging technologies
to access, evaluate, and disseminate information for integration
into instructional programs. (Correlates to the NBPTS Library Media
Standards Standard II, III, IV, V, VI)
I rated the librarian/library program as overall Recognized for Principle 3. The
student and staff are provided with an online library access program through
the district website, which the librarian updates regularly. In the library, there
are two administrative computers and 4-6 computers dedicated to
circulation. The librarian facilitates technology literacy skills and aids the
students, and teachers, in using the circulation or student computers. As
well, she works closely with the technology coordinator for our campus and is
often redistributing IPad, Chromebooks, or desk top computers to
classrooms. For example, currently, she is in the process of working with the
technology coordinator to help all classrooms become Google Classroom
friendly and aid teachers who are struggling with learning how to integrate
Google Classroom into their daily lessons. The librarian is pushing the
technology initiatives put into place for the district by the recently hired
superintendent.

Principle 4: The librarian models information problem solving

processes while providing formal and informal instruction about
reference and research techniques.
For Principle 4, I rated the librarian/library as Acceptable. The librarian often
gives refreshers to teachers on how to integrate various types of technology,
such as new apps or online websites that can streamline a classroom. Along
with the work that the librarian does in collaboration with the technology

coordinator, she will often encourage teachers to try a new way of teaching
and aid them in the process. As well, she will direct teachers to helpful
websites and databases that can help the teacher and the students improve
their research success.
