A combination wrench, as Americans call it and combination spanner, as British call it, is a tool usually
made of steel that is used to provide grip, mechanical advantage in applying torques and to reach places
where other tools cant. This is a common tool in the industry. It is generally used for tightening or loosening
nuts and bolts. Part of combination wrench has a U shaped opening. It is made to the exact width of a
hexagonal bolt. (8mm, 9mm etc.) The open ended spanner end is oriented at a 15 degree angle to its
longitudinal axis. This is for easiness of using in compact spaces. Other end of the spanner is called box
ended side. It has six points or twelve points star pattern ring which fits to nuts and bolt heads with
hexagonal shape.

According to design engineers production drawing specifications, type of material should be informed
to the supplier. There are AISI steel designation standards for each type of steel. It should be
informed. And also here we need solid round bars. (Not square bars) It should also be informed. The
required dimensions of the rods should be informed to the supplier. The amount of material needed as
well as the time duration for delivery and venue should also be comprehended.

For manager or owner


According to the design engineers and production and operation management engineers (may be
quantity surveying people) criteria on the rate of production of spanners manager should decide how

much material we should acquire for a given period. According to the quotations of the suppliers
he/she should decide the budget allocations for materials.(cost of materials.)
For employees of the company
After setting up the machines, employees should be informed of the procedure of manufacturing
process wrenches.
Employee should be informed on how the machines work and operation manual of the machine.
Especially he/she must be educated about safety precautions to be taken and what should be done in
case of an emergency.
Possible customers/users
Combination wrenches are used all around the world. To distinguish the combination spanner for a
particular size bolt or nut, size of the spanner mouth is carved in the spanner. Trade name and
manufacturing method is also imprinted on the surface of the wrench to indicate the quality of the
product. (Since using a combination spanner is commonly known, no need of a user manual.)

If miscommunication between supplier and manager happens, wrong type of material or wrong shape
or wrong dimensions or wrong or wrong quality of material may be supplied. If that happens total lot
will have to be rejected and all intermediate costs and transportation costs will be doubled.

Miscommunication between manager and engineer may lead to

may be selected. Thatll affect the quality of the production.

Miscommunication between engineer and employee may lead to safety hazards may occur and may
ended up with loosing human lives unless proper safety precautions and operation procedures are
carried out.
