READING COMPREHENSION
Reading 1 for questions 41 47
The Hopi are part of the Pueblo Indian culture. Today they live mostly in northeastern Arizona, at the edge
of the Painted Desert. Something that sets the Hopi off from other cultures is that it is in some senses a maternal
rather than a paternal culture.
The Hopi are divided into clans, or families, along maternal lines, and, as a result, a child becomes a
member of the mothers clan rather than the fathers. In addition, ownership of property, such as land and
houses, passes from mother to daughter instead of from father to son, as it does in other Native American
cultures. However, women do not have all the power in this culture. Societal authority still rests in the hands of
men, but that authority does pass to men from their mothers.

Read the passage carefully and select the one correct answer from the four choices (A, B, C, or D)!
The mighty, warlike Aztec nation existed in Mexico from 1195 to 1521. The high priest taught the
people that the sun would shine, the crops would grow, and the empire would prosper only if the gods
were appeased by human sacrifices and bloods offering from all levels of their society. The priest
practiced forms of self-mutilation, such as piercing their tongues with thorns and flagellating themselves
with thorn branches. They collected the small amount of blood produced by these practices and offered
it to Huitzilopochtli and Quetzalcoatl, their chief gods. They insisted that all Aztecs needed to make some
sort of daily sacrifices. Warriors were promised a place of honor in the afterlife if they died courageously
in battle.
The Aztecs were constantly at war in order to have enough captives from battle to serve as
sacrificial victims. The prisoners were indoctrinated before their deaths into believing that they, too,
would fine a place of honor in afterlife and that their death insured the prosperity of the great Aztec
nation. After being heavily sedated with marijuana or a similar drug, they were led up the steps to the
top of the ceremonial centers where they accepted their fate passively, and their palpitating hearts were
removed from their bodies as an offering to the gods.

Reading 3 for questions 56 60

Read the passage carefully and select the one correct answer from the four choice (A, B, C or D)
With money we can buy the things that we need everyday. And there are many things that
money can buy. The problem is the amount of money that you have and how wisely you use that
amount.
Money is first of all a means of exchange. If you want to exchange some books that you do not
need for a shirt, you may try to find someone who needs your books and who has the shirt that you
want. But it is often hard to organize an exchange. It is easier to sell the books and then buy the shirt that
you like.
Money is also a means of measuring the value of other things. It easier to say how many rupiahs
a cow costs than to say that it has the same value as five goats.
We can also store value with money. It does not spoil as fish or fruit or vegetables do when they
are sold. The cost of things, of course, may change as time goes on and the money that you have today
may be less in the future. If it loses a lot of its value, money will be a bad means of storing value. Then it
will spoil as a farmers product can spoil.
Finally, money is a means for making payments. You may buy a bicycle now and pay for it in five
months, and make a payment of one-fifth on the cost every month. This is better than buying one-fifth of
a bicycle at time and not riding it until you have bought all parts. Many shopkeepers are happy to do this
for you if your credit is good. That is, if you always make your payment on time.

B. The cost of things may always change.
