Halloween Journey
Monday, October 31st
On All Hallows Eve, small groups of children and parents will

be guided along an enchanting, pumpkin lit path through the
forest, past various scenes and magical characters, and will
receive natural, healthy gifts on their journey.
Journeys take place between 4:30 and 7:00 pm, leaving
every 10 minutes. Spaces are $10.00 per child (ideal for

in Nelson this year at the Prestige Lakeside Resort & Convention Center.

Taking A (Tasty) Bite Out Of MS
The MS Societys annual A Taste of Nelson event, presented by Save-On Foods, raised over $9,600! The event,
hosted at the Prestige Lakeside Resort, featured 13 Nelson
restaurants, providing delicious bite size portions, as well
as two wineries and the Nelson Brewing Company. Fork
in Cork trophies were awarded in three categories, with
the winners decided by guest votes. Congratulations to
the winners:

The Falls Music Lounge for Best Presentation
105 guests were kept entertained by a lively MC and
music provided by Party Party DJ Services. There was also

raised at the event will be used to provide services to people
with MS and their families, as well as to fund research to find

TO PAY CHILD SUPPORT?
One thing parents often fight about after
splitting up is the amount of child support the non-custodial parent (the one
who doesnt have the kids living with
them) has to pay. For example, what if
that parent, say the father, is unemployed
does he still need to pay? Lets look at
the following recent case decided by BC's
Supreme Court.
Paul, 45, and Mandy, 42, (names
changed) were married in 1998, separated in 2012 and divorced in 2014. They
had two children, 15 and 17 at the time
of trial. During their marriage, the family
lived with Pauls parents. After the split,
Mandy and the children moved into a
basement suite, while Paul continued to
live with his parents.
Mandy, trained as a pharmacy technician, worked as a union labour relations
officer. Paul worked as a courier before
and during their marriage. But, except
for about six weeks in 2013, he was unemployed after he and Mandy split up.
With Paul and Mandys agreement, the
court in 2015 ordered that Mandy would
have sole custody of the children. Paul
was to pay child support of $200 per
month.
At trial about a year later, one of the
things Mandy asked for was a higher
amount of monthly child support.
The court heard that Paul had worked
at a courier company for some 20 years,
but was dismissed shortly before his split
with Mandy, due to misbehaviour related
to alcohol problems. His annual income
used to be around $50-55,000 dollars.

The company hired him back in 2013, but
fired him again six weeks later, again for
cause. Since then, Paul, now a recovering
alcoholic, hadnt worked and, it turned
out, was not looking for work either.
The court pointed out that each parent
has an obligation to support children of
the marriage. There are federal child support guidelines to assist the court in fixing the amount a parent who doesnt live
with the children should pay.
Those guidelines make clear that such a
parent is obligated to look for work and
cant get around his or her child support
obligations by being deliberately unemployed or underemployed, earning less
than what they realistically could based
on their age, health, education, skills, experience and other factors.
Where it turns out, like here, that the parent isnt working and isnt even looking
for work the court can order child support as though the parent was working
and earning the income they should be
able to earn.
Given his particular history, Paul was
unlikely to be able to get his old job back
or earn the same amount in future as he
had before he was let go, but the court set
his imputed income (i.e. what he could
likely earn) at $25,000 per year.
Based on Pauls imputed income, the
court decided the amount of monthly
child support Mandy was entitled to get
from him should be increased to $391
per month.

Set To Make A Splash
The highly anticipated opening of the Nelson and District Community Complex (NDCC) Aquatic Centre is set
for 6:30 am on October 20!
We are thrilled to welcome the public back to their
facility, said Valerie Warmington, chair of the Nelson and
District Recreation Commission. We are confident that
everyone will enjoy the changes to this community centre.
The pool will be completed with final tile being laid, the
installation of the sauna wood walls and the three metre
diving platform, before opening. As well the entire space
will be cleaned in preparation for the public. The RDCK
aquatic staff will be setting up the pool areas and training
to ensure that patrons enjoy the space while being safe.
Renovations to the facility were initiated in April 2015

and included:
New deck, gutters, tank and deck tiles and water

New underwater lighting
A relocated lifeguard station for better staff access
and supervision

the other evening, Iain and I both agreed that of all the houses we
have bought and sold (10) Joni (and Richard) have by far been the

On Thursday, October 20, credit unions and credit union

members around the world will celebrate International
Credit Union Day, an annual event to commemorate the
credit union movements impact and achievements globally,
nationally and locally, in our communities. This years theme,
The Authentic Difference, celebrates what makes credit unions
standout. Credit unions are recognized as a force for positive
economic and social change and have provided significant
value in both developed and emerging nations.
It is time for people to give more thought to where they bank
because it does make a difference, says Tom Atkins, manager
of Marketing and Relationship Development at NDCU. Nelson & District Credit Union is a part of, not apart from, our
communities and we know that local matters. We encourage
the community to come learn more about being part of something different on International Credit Union Day.
Nelson & District Credit Unions connection to the credit
union and co-op system is well established. Collaboration
within the Kootenays has strengthened the regional economy through partnerships of shared values that are rooted
in our communities and not guided by profits. Help celebrate a movement that concerns itself with the financial
success of all people.
International Credit Union Day is sponsored by World
Council of Credit Unions, the international trade association and development agency for credit unions and Canadian Credit Union Association, the Canadian national
trade association for credit unions. In honour of this
special day, NDCU invites its members and the community to our branches to help recognize how unique credit
unions are.
In Canada, Co-op Week is celebrated to coincide with
International Credit Union Day, which is marked annually on the third Thursday of October. This year, the Co-op
Week of celebration will take place between October
16-22, the theme is Our Co-op Advantages. This celebration is an opportunity for members to help celebrate the
positive impacts that credit unions and co-ops make in
their communities.
Members and future members are encouraged to stop by
one of NDCUs three community branches on Thursday,
October 20 to enjoy the festivities in Nelson, Rossland and
