THE FORBIDDEN CITY

I.

INTRODUCTION

The Forbidden City served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the
ceremonial and political Centre of the Chinese government for almost 500 years. It was
constructed for 14 years from 1406 to 1420; the complex consists of 980 buildings with
9000 rooms. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by
UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. Since
1925, the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive
collection of artwork and artifacts were built Part of the museum's former collection is now
located in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Both museums descend from the same
institution, but were split after the Chinese Civil War. With over 14 million annual visitors and
77,000 visitors a day the Palace Museum is the most visited Museum in the world. The
Centre of China's capital Beijing, the Forbidden City displays an extraordinarily harmonious
balance between buildings and open space within a symmetrical layout. It contains immense
courtyards, terraces and stairways, and buildings decorated with golden roofs, vermilion,
vivid red pigment of durable quality.

DICUSSIONS

Since the Forbidden City is facing a problem about poor management. According to the
observers and insiders, the researchers came up with a re-engineering plan of changing the
management of the place. First, the researchers planned to change the ones who managed
the place by employing more intellectual, responsible, and knowledgeable locals, and adding
some security personnel and CCTV cameras. Lastly, the researchers will adapt a new
management policy like the place should be a smoke free area because thousands of people
visit the place a day, a shorter visiting hour for a better upkeep and maintenance.

SUMMARY

The Forbidden City was the former imperial palace which was the home to twenty-four
Chinese emperors over 491 years between 1420 and 1911. The Forbidden City is now known
as the Palace Museum and is open to Beijing's visitors. Wear comfortable walking shoes as
the palace is 960 meters long and 750 meters wide. It has 9,999 rooms - a room being the
space between four pillars. The well-guarded palace is surrounded by a moat 3,800 meters
long and 52 meters wide. Intruders were discouraged by guards in watchtowers with bow
and arrows. There are five entrances to the gate - the central one reserved for the emperor.
The empress was allowed through it only once - on her wedding day. As well as walking
through the wide open courtyards along its central axis, the sides offer some museum
exhibits and small courtyards worth exploring.

SUGGESTION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The researchers suggest that the management of the Forbidden City should implement
the plans of controlling the tourists in a day by making a limited reservation to the
management so that the place will not be always overcrowded. We recommend that the
management should do a website of the Forbidden City so the tourist can make their
reservation online for them to improve the overall guest experience of the tourist because
the lesser people who visits the place is more enjoyable than the overcrowded ones. The
researchers also suggest that we should double the security in the place by hiring more
personnel, it will not just secure the tourists but it will also benefit the locals through
employing them.
