MIX DESIGN TO ACI STANDARD 211.

1-91
Determine the proportions for a trial mix of 0.08m3 (0.1 yd3) for the following
Mix Component Properties
Characteristic compressive strength: 25 N/mm2 at 28 day
Portland cement: Class 42.5N
Slump required: 30-60 mm
Maximum aggregate size: 40 mm
Maximum free-water/cement ratio: 0.50
Minimum cement content, 290 kg/m3
There are no previous control data but a margin of 10 N/mm2 has been specified
Aggregate type: Uncrushed
Aggregate relative density: 2.5
Assumptions
The concrete will be used in an area where there is limited severe conditions.
We are using concrete of strength 3625psi the equivalent of 25N/mm2
Step 1: Choice of Slump

`
Slump to be used which is almost equivalent to the 30-60mm will be 1-2inches
Step 2: Aggregates
Available aggregate size to be used is as graded from No. 4 to 1 1/2in
Step3: Estimation of mixing water and air content
Considering concrete as non-air-entrained concrete since the exposurre conditions are not severe

From table 6.3.3 above the approximate amount of mixing water to produce a slump of 3-4 is found to
300lb/yd3

Step 4: Selection of water-cement or water cementitious materials ratio

From Table 6.3.4(a), the water cement ratio needed to produce a strength of 3625psi in non-air-entra
concrete is found to be approx. 0.61

Step 5: Cement Content

From Information derived from steps 3 to 4 the required cement content is
=300/0.61=492lb/y^3
Step 6: Estimation of Course aggregate content

This is estimated from Table 6.3.6 for a fine aggregate of modulus of 2.8 and 1 1/2in. Nominal maxim
size of course aggregatesthe table indicates that 071ft 3 on a dry rodded basis, may be used in each ft
concrete.

So for each yd3, the course aggregates will be 27 x 0.71 = 19.17ft 3, therefore weight of aggregates wi
100lb/ft3x 19.17ft3 =1917lb:
Step 7: Estimation of fine aggregates
Here all the other concrete ingredients have been established only fines are remaining the method of
weight basis shall be used.

From Table 6.3.7.1 the weight of a yd3 of non-air-entrained concrete made with aggregates of nomin
maximum size of 11/2in. Is estimated to be 4070lb
