ARCHITECTURAL STYLE

Robb & Brienne Starks is Italianate. Italianate buildings

derived from Italys rambling farmhouses, characteristics
of square towers & informal detailing. Italianate Roofs are
low pitched, with square cupola on top. Projecting eaves
& large brackets in a variety of shapes and spacing the
dominated cornice. Single or in pairs brackets
underscored with wide decorative bands. Windows are
arched and curved, while the door features large panes of
glass. (Italianate doors were the first to have glass in
doors).

Part I:

Concept Statement

A Modern Scandinavian design will be created for

Robb and Brienne Stark. Clean, Geometrical lines
that exude sophisticated elegance and Timeless
white wall coverings will be used to recede visually,
making rooms feel much larger than they really are
for Mrs. Starks unique photo collection to be placed
on the walls. Natural wood floors throughout to
provide warmth and texture. To embrace the clients
style; let the light shine in through the big uncovered
windows, natural lighting creates a bright open and
airy space. Bright Pops of Textile accessories will fill
the rooms sparingly, adding the custom design builtin storage piece with design space. Art-Deco
Furnishings throughout while the living room
furnishings feature warm colors for the upholstery. A
focal point will be added in the main living space,
incorporating a Modern Fireplace, to bring hearth
and warmth to the Starks Home.

Part II:

Color Palette

These bright but yet warming colors I have chosen

for the Textile accessories and furnishings of Robb
and Brienne Starks home. The purple - Figure 2, will
increase value and will darken as the Saturation will
lighten it. Also, the Green - Figure 3, will lighten as
well to create balance to the space.

CODES ANALYSIS/UPDATES
Rationalize why or why not the existing building
should be expected to conform to the code

The building shall be expected to conform to this code because there is no fire escape available for the
buidling. The only entrance and exit of the building is through the main entrance

The building doesnt have a fire escape available for emergency instances. Having a sprinker system
connected to a fire alarm is important for this building in case of fire emergencies and the escape exit is not
available or covered in fire.

The first level of this building has a bistro that serves to the public. Having an automatic sprinkler system is
important for fire regulations and for the safety of the guests that frequent the bistro. The sprinkler system
provides protection to fire hazards when there is limited access to the fire exits.
At the time of the erection or installation shall be permitted to remain in use unless the code official
determines to render the structure/building unsafe or dangerous.
Provided no dangerous or unsafe conditions are created. Hazardous Materials, like asbestos and lead
base paint, shall not be used where code for new construction would not permit their use in buildings
of similar occuoancies.

At existing interior vertical openings connecting 2 or more floors shall be enclosed with approved
assemblies having a fire resistance rating less than 1 hour with approved opening protectives.
Where more than one calculated or tabulated ampacity could apply for a given circuit length, the lowest
value shall be used.

New electrical work and parts of existing systems affected by new work or alterations shall be inspected by
the building official to ensure compliance with the requirements of chapter 34 through 43.

In locations where electrical equipment is likely to be exposed to physical damage, enclosures or guards
shall be so arranged and of such strength to prevent such damage.

ure to comply with energy requirementsof the International Energy Conservation Code / International Residential Code. Alterations shall conform to energy requirements

A facility that is altered shall comply with applicalble provisions of the IBC, unless technically feasible. The alteration shall provide access to maximum extent.
All construction / Windows may be added without requiring compliance with light and ventilation requirements of the IEBC.

o energy requirements of the IECC / IRC as they relat to new construction only.

Building Elements and Materials

Provisions to any building or structure shall comply with requirements of the
International Business Code or International Existing Building Code for new
construction or additions. Any Alterations to existing buildings and or
structures shall be made to ensure the existing building or structure together
with the addition are no less conforming to all provisions. Also, all new interior
wall and ceiling finishes and Interior floor finishes, including carpeting shall
comply with code. A facility that is altered shall comply with applicable and
accessible and shall be maintained accessible during occupancy. However,
Historic Buildings have provisions of codes that require improvements relative
to a buildings existing condition. Historic Buildings do not comply under the
same Section IBC/IEBC, Historic Buildings are determined by the Secretary of
U.S Department of Interior as to the historical significance of a registered
historic district.
As an Interior Designer it is highly recommended in learning the Codes,
because it can / create space planning problems. I found that Interior
designers should focus on six areas related to the codes: 1) group
classifications, 2) types of construction, 3) means of egress 4) fire-resistive
construction, 5) issues of flammability & noxious fumes, and 6) ADA
requirements. Its unnecessary to separate issues of natural lighting, energy
conservation, view to the exterior, solar orientation, & natural ventilation as
they relate to the actual preliminary space planning process. Human factors
should be the ultimate determinants for Natural lighting. Therefore, need to
always maximize energy conservation, while maintaining appropriate balance
with the heating and cooling needs.

Professor Michelle Kirkpatrick
Week 3 Assignment 2
Part II:
Any designer that is designing a space has to go through the space planning steps to ensure that
the building or space is functional, and abides by all the requirements and regulations to ensure safety
as well. Codes and regulations are put into place by the International Code Council so that all of these
requirements are met for a space. Building codes deal with every single aspect of building planning,
design, and construction. Building codes are a collection of regulations, standards and guidelines that
govern the process and systems of building design. They encompass many volumes of books, each
embracing a particular discipline, specialty or approach to the design process. Each code that is adopted
by a federal, state or local agency becomes a document enforceable by law. Building codes are not a
"fixed body of knowledge," but rather a collection of evolving standards that change in response to new
research, technology, product development, testing, information and actual occurrences of building
failures, accidents and natural disasters (ASID). Typically, interior designers' primary code involvements
are limited to the sections on use group classification, types of construction, means of egress, and fireresistive construction, plus the issues of flammability and noxious fumes (Space Planning, pg.67). Codes
are very important because without them there is no universal understanding or reference to create
safe environments with any certainty, method or governance. When a designer is knowledgeable of the
codes of regulations while planning out a space, it allows them to do their job thoroughly and efficiently.
For example, one of the most important codes for a designer is the means of egress. Creating a safe
entrance or exit way for a building or space is essential in space planning. In case of emergencies,
enough space needs to be available for quick easy access in and out. The number of people that can go
through an exit at the same time, the width of an entrance/exit, dead end corridors, length of time it
takes to exit, and having more than one entrance/exit available are all things considerable to a designer
planning out a building space. Another example of building codes that are important would be
providing the mixture of natural lighting, and artificial lighting. Building codes are put in place to
determine how much natural light and air each space must have. People psychologically need natural
light and a view to the exterior in most rooms they spend time in, residential or otherwise, and these
human factors should be the ultimate determinants in window placement decisions. One more factor
that is also important is energy conservation, indicating that the use of natural lighting be maximized
while maintaining an appropriate balance with heating and cooling needs (Space Planning, pg. 68).
There are many more examples of building codes that are extremely important for an interior designer
to be knowledgeable of to be successful. Learning these codes and applying them to every design space
will ensure that a building/space has been planned out successfully and is functional and safe.

Electrical

For my topic I chose electrical codes. Electrical plays a huge role in the building world. It powers our
houses, businesses, and pretty much our lives. If electrical fails, then it could be emotionally and
physically harmful to a structure or a person. For historic buildings you would want to upgrade all
electrical if doing a remodel, and to just get the building or house up to date with todays appliances and
building codes. I believe putting sprinkler systems in a home is not such a good idea. Just because
people do cook among other things in their home and we wouldnt want smoke or just a little bit of heat
to set said sprinkler system off. Electrical code 2702.2.9 is for high rise buildings emergency and standby
power. For example, for my assignment I am doing a loft type building over a bistro. I believe that said
loft would fall into this category, especially it being over a restaurant. Electrical code 2702.2.11, means
of egress illumination, states that emergency power shall be provided for means of egress illumination.
Being that said loft is over a bistro, it should at least have egress illumination leading to the residents
door and down the stairs.
