The voice of UK industry

2016 continues to be busy with exciting opportunities and challenges coming up
every day. One of the key challenges since 23rd June has been trying to work
out how Brexit will impact on our industry.
As the trade association for the UK composites industry we monitor and collate
the official information and disseminate it through the website, member bulletins
and social media activities to ensure our members are kept as up-to-date as
possible. In an inevitable period of uncertainty following such a result, the
immediate impact on businesses seems to vary depending on their particular
position in the market and supply chain some have seen sharp changes whilst
others remain currently unaffected.
You can keep an eye out for our postings and updates with members receiving
more detailed information via our communications. All we know for sure is that
right now, until Article 50 is invoked, we are still a member of the EU and our
industry will continue to engage with EU business and be engaged in EU
decision-making.
Membership is strong and continues to grow with the total now exceeding 270.
It is important now more than ever before to come together as one industry to
support UK innovation and manufacture. Through the Composites Leadership
Forum (CLF) we are driving change and providing the Government with critical
information to ensure a positive future for UK plc.
Composites are well established across all main industrial sectors. The potential
for growth varies within each, but there are considerable opportunities to be
had. In aerospace, defence and marine, the focus is to deliver existing capability,
whereas huge short-term growth is predicted in the automotive and renewables
sectors. In rail, construction and oil & gas, the UK currently supplies relatively
small volumes but the potential benefits of composites and development of the
supply chain could help deliver the longer-term potential in these markets.
These opportunities will be the focus of our forum sessions at the Composites
Engineering Show, 2-3 November 2016, Birmingham NEC, where major players,
OEMs and Tier 1s will be talking about the challenges they face and where
composites can fit into their future plans. Please ensure youre there to hear
what they have to say. Alongside the show is the annual Industry Awards Dinner
an opportunity to showcase and celebrate whats great here in the UK in style,
sharing stories of success across the sector. Registration for this is live via the
Composites UK website.
Theres lots more going on within the Association with health
and safety workshops, regional events and several sector showcases
coming up. There are some interesting and exciting times
ahead, so keep an eye on our website and member
bulletins for updates on activities, opportunities and
critical industry information.

meet the demands of modern composite manufacturing.
Key benefits of these new formulations include: viscosities
optimised for both laminating and Infusion; a range of
PRO-SET epoxy resins based upon differing viscosities and a

selection of hardeners offering a range of working time and

cure speeds. In addition, PRO-SET hardeners are fully
interchangeable, enabling cure speed to be tailored to exact
needs. Low temperature, shorter post cure requirements offer
large overhead savings yet still achieve excellent physical
properties. These benefits coupled with outstanding technical
support provide the ultimate package for any composite user.
If these standard formulations do not match your precise
requirements we will work with you to create custom
formulated epoxy systems that will meet your exact
requirements. Turnaround times are fast and more
significantly, we are able to provide customised PRO-SET
formulations in relatively small volumes.
To ensure we remain at the forefront of research and
development, Wessex Resins & Adhesives has recently
invested 250,000 in a new R&D laboratory to maintain the
Companys position at the forefront of the composites,
