Lecture notes Design of Transmission System

Problem:
An open belt drive connects two parallel shafts 1.2m apart. The driving and driven shafts rotate
at 350 rpm and 140 rpm respectively and the driven pulley is 400 mm in diameter. The power to
be transmitted is 1.1kW. Design the drive.
Given Data:
Center distance C =1.2 m =1200 mm. N1 = 350 rpm , N2 = 140 rpm , Driven pulley dia. D =
400 mm , Power P =1.1 kW.
Solution :
1. Pulley diameter calculation
D/d = N1/ N2
400 / d = 350/140
d = 160mm standardize the pulley diameter
Now smaller pulley diameter d =160 mm.
2. Determination of Various factors and Calculation of Design of Power
Load Correction factor ks =1.2 (steady load)
Arc of contact = 1800 { (D-d) /C *600 }
= 1800 { (400-160) /1200 *600 }
= 1680.
For 1680 , k = 1.04 ,
Smaller pulley factor kd = 0.6
Design Power = (Rated kW x ks ) / (k x kd )
P = 1.1 x 1.2 / ( 1.04 x 0.6) = 2.115 kW.
3. Selection of Belt :
Fabric belt, high speed duck belt is chosen. Its capacity is 0.023 kW/mm/ply.

4. Load Rating Correction

Speed of the belt = dN1 / (60 x 1000) = x 160 x 350 / (60 x 1000)

= 2.9

m/s.

Lecture notes Design of Transmission System
Load rating at 2.9 m/s = load rating at 10 m/s x (2.9 /10)
= (0.023 x 2.9) / 10
0.00667 kW/mm/ply.
5. Determination of belt width :
Width of belt = design power / (load rating x no. of plies)
= 2.15 / ( 0.00667 x 4 )
= 79.27 mm.
Round off the value and standardize .
For 4 ply beltstd .width = 90 mm.
6. Calculation of Belt Length
For an open belt drive ,
L = 2C + /2(D+d) +(D-d)2 /4C
L = 2 x 1200 + /2 ( 400 + 160 ) + ( 400 -160 )2 / 4 x 1200
L =3291.6 mm = 3300 mm.
7. Pulley width
= belt width + 13 mm
= 90 + 13
= 103 mm.
Recommended width is 112 mm.
Two Marks
1. Specify the purpose of crowning of pulleys [May 2006]
To prevent slipping from pulley due to centrifugal force
2. Explain creep in belts
Since the tensions produced by the belt on the two sides of the pulley are not
equal, the belt moves with a very negligible velocity, due to the difference of two
tensions. This slow movement of the belt over the pulley is known as creep of belt and it
is generally neglected."
3. What are the types of belts?
a) Flat Belts
b) Toothed or Timing
c) Round, Belts
d) V Belts.
(i)Single V (ii) multiple V belt. (iii) Ribbed Belt
