Question One (40 %)

In the steel structure shown, a 6-mm-diameter pin is used at C and 10-mm-diameter pins are used at B and
D. (E=200GPa, v=0.25).
Part A:
Knowing that P=6 kN, determine the following:
1. The normal stress at mid-height of member BD
2. The normal strain at mid-height of member BD
3. The lateral strain at mid-height of member BD
4. The maximum shear stress at mid-height of member BD on an oblique plane.
Part B:
Knowing that the ultimate shearing stress is 150 MPa at all connections, and the ultimate normal stress is
400 MPa in member BD with a factor of safety of 3.0, determine the following:
1. The largest load P that can be applied at A without exceeding the allowable shear stress at pins B, C,
and D
2. The largest load P that can be applied at A without exceeding the allowable normal stress in member
BD.

Question Two (40 %)

The steel rod (E=200 GPa; G=80 GPa) is subjected to three axial loads as shown in the figure. Part ABC of the rod has
a diameter of 30 mm where portion BC is solid while portion AB is hollow with an inner diameter of 15 mm.
1. Determine the force F3 so that the horizontal deformation at C =0
2. Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses in the rod ABC
3. Determine the axial strain in portion BC
4. Determine the change in diameter in portion BC
5.

Determine the minimum required diameter of portion CD If point D must not stretch more than 1 mm and the
normal stress must not exceed 300 MPa (Assume F3=120 kN).

Question Three (20 %)

A two-element aluminum shaft AC (G=27 GPa) is subjected to external torques at sections B and C as shown. If
the diameter of element (1) is 50 mm, determine the maximum inner diameter of element (2), di2, such that the
maximum shear stress in the shaft does not exceed the allowable shear stress of 35 MPa and the total angle of
twist at C does not exceed 0.08 rad.
