What is the relationship between craters, calderas,

vents, and magma? They all have ties with the
production and releasing of magma onto and below
the surface. Also the products.
How does a crater lake form? (words and
pictures)Crater lakes are formed when the summit or
the side of a volcano collapses into the magma
chamber.
What two factors does a volcanos appearance
depend upon? What characteristics vary among
volcanoes? The type of material that forms the
volcano and the type of eruptions that occur.

How do the volcanoes compare in terms of size and

slope? Shield volcanoes are the largest and the
smallest are cinder cone volcanoes.
What factors cause differences in size and slope? The
material of the volcano, the vegetation that grows on
the volcano, local climate, and eruptive history
What is tephra? Rock fragments thrown in the air
during a volcanic eruption
What is a pyroclastic flow? Rapidly moving volcanic
material
Where are most volcanoes found? At plate
boundaries
Use the maps provided to show: (1) the Circum Pacific
Belt and the Mediterranean Belt where convergent

volcanism occur and (2) the Hawaiian Emperor Volcanic

Chain.
How do hotspots form? heat rises as a thermal plume from
deep in the Earth. High heat and lower pressure at the base of the
lithosphere (tectonic plate) facilitates melting of the rock. This melt,
called magma, rises through cracks and erupts to form volcanoes.

What do hotspots tell us about tectonic plates? It

tells us that volcanoes arent limited to being
formed on plate boundaries
