What is the relationship between craters, calderas,

vents, and magma? Magma becomes lava by
reaching ground and going through vents. Around
the vent is a bowl shaped depression called a crater.
Larger craters are called calderas.
How does a crater lake form? (words and pictures)
When the summit of a volcano collapses into the
magma chamber.
What two factors does a volcanos appearance
depend upon? What characteristics vary among
volcanoes? Material that forms it and the types of
eruptions cause the appearance. Characteristics that
vary include the size, height, etc.

How do the volcanoes compare in terms of size and

slope? Cinder-cones are the smallest and therefore
have the steepest slopes.
What factors cause differences in size and slope? The
material and force/type of explosion help shapes the
volcano.
What is tephra? Rock fragments thrown into the air
during an explosion

What is a pyroclastic flow? Rapidly moving volcanic

material from an explosioin
Where are most volcanoes found? Along plate
boundaries, usually convergent.
Use the maps provided to show: (1) the Circum Pacific
Belt and the Mediterranean Belt where convergent
volcanism occur and (2) the Hawaiian Emperor Volcanic
Chain.
How do hotspots form? Hotspots form above
unusually hot regions of earths mantle where it
causes plumes of mantle material to rise to the
surface.
What do hotspots tell us about tectonic plates? It
can help us calculate the rate and direction of
motion, and changes in plate motion in the past.
