French teenagers spend a great deal of time on their studies since they and
their families consider it important to do well in school. They have a longer
class day than American students and are given more homework.
However, French teenagers do not study all the time. They also enjoy listening
to music, watching TV, and playing computer games. Many participate in
various sports activities, but to a lesser extent than American students. On
weekends, they like to go out with their friends to shop or see a movie.
They also go to parties and love dancing.

Le t~l~phone
French teenagers, like their American counterparts, love to talk
with their friends on the phone. At home, they can use the
family phone, but now more and more young people also have
a cell phone which is called un telephone portable or simply
un portable for short. (Portable comes from the French verb
porter, which means to carry.)
Europeans have been ahead of Americans in the use of mobile
phones. In France, for instance, almost half of the people own a
cell phone. This proportion is higher with teenagers and college
students. Cell phones have many advantages. You can call your
friends from wherever you are and whenever you want, and if
you are going to be late for dinner, you can call and let your
parents know. Cell phones, however, can be annoying and even
distrading. In France, it is illegal to make cell phone calls while
driving a car. Moreover, students are not allowed to bring cell phones to class. It is
also considered impolite to use them in restaurants, cinemas, and concert halls.
COMPARAISONS CULTURELLES
Compare the French and American attitudes toward the use of cell phones.
How do you feel about people using cell phones in the following
circumstances? Indicate whether you think it is appropriate or not by
saying: C'est acceptable. or Ce n'est pas acceptable.

French middle school students do not usually have classes
on Wednesday afternoons. Some young people use this
free time to go out with their friends or to catch up on their
homework. For other students, Wednesday afternoon is
also the time for music and dance lessons as well as sports
activities. Many students play soccer with their school team or
with their local sports club. Other popular activities include
tennis, skateboarding, and in-line skating.

On weekends, French teenagers like to go to parties that are
organized at a friend's home. These informal parties have different
names according to the age group of the participants. For students at
a college (middle school), a party is sometimes known as une bourn
or une fete. For older students at a Jycee (high school), it is called
unesoiree.
At a bourn, parents are usually around to help out and set up a
buffet which often features items contributed by the guests. Pizza
and chips are very popular. There may also be homemade
sandwiches or Chinese food. Preferred beverages are sodas and
mineral waters.
Most of the young people like to dance and listen to their favorite music.
Some may get drawn into the latest video games. Others simply enjoy
getting together to talk about the week's events. For everyone, it is a way
to spend a relaxing eveni ng with friends.

A student (unjune eleve) who does not do well in a given grade has to repeat that

kept back at least once during their secondary school studies.
At the end of high school, French students take a two-part national examination
called le baccalaureat, or le bac for short, which they have to pass in order to
enter the university.
The first part, which focuses on the French language, is administered
at the end of premiere.
The second part, which is given at the end of terminale, offers students over
twenty options reflecting their area of specialization.
Only 75% of the students who take the bac in a given year pass the exam. Of those
who are successful, about 85% continue their studies either at the university or at a
specialized professional school. Since education in France is considered a responsibility
of the government, tuition is free at all public universities.
